Orrin 'Red' Mulanax

Orrin D. “Red” Mulanax, 81, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, at Village Manor, Abilene.

He was born July 2, 1927, at Enterprise, the son of Ernest L. and Velma (Cline) Mulanax. He gre to manhood in the community of his birth, attended the Enterprise schools, graduated from Enterprise High School and attended Kansas State University.

In 1945, he entered the U.S. Army. Following his discharge, he worked for the Ehrsam Company, Enterprise. He was recalled to the Army during the Korean Conflict .

On Dec. 25, 1952, he married Doris Kueker in Abilene. They made their home in California for 10 years before returning to Abilene in 1965. She preceded him in death on March 17, 1995.

On April 24, 1999, he married Darlene Fiedler Snyder. Their married life was spent in Enterprise.

He was a member of the Abilene Elks Lodge, a life member of the Abilene VFW Post and the America Legion. He was active in the Abilene Bowling Association and Abilene Community Theater.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene, of the home, one son, Stephen of Abilene; one daughter, Marty Holt of Abilene; one brother, Phil Mulanax of Abilene; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and other relatives.

Besides his first wife, he was also preceded in death by a grandson, Trevor D. Mulanax.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Sat. Sept. 6, 2008, at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, Abilene, with Pastor Stan Norman and Roger Walls officiating. Burial will be in the Greenville Cemetery, Niles, with military graveside honors. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, where friends may call until service time.

Memorials may be made to the Abilene Elks Lodge or the charity of the giver’s choice. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.

Betty Johnson

Betty Lee Johnson
Betty Lee Johnson, 84, died Aug. 28, 2008, at Memorial Hospital in Abilene.

She was born April 16, 1924, in Morland, the daughter of Arthur and Folsom Mamie (Born) Strong.

She married Eugene V. Johnson on May 7, 1941, in Hays. He died May 8, 2006.

Survivors include one son, Larry Johnson of Litchfield,

Ariz.; one daughter, Charlene Cook of Abilene; two brothers, Don Strong of Mountain View, Ark., and Bob Strong of Dighton; and two grandsons, Matthew and Ben Cook.

She also was preceded in death by one son, Frank, and two brothers.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at Stinemetz Funeral Home, 622 N. Pomeroy, Hill City, KS 67642, with private intermenty of cremains. Pastor Ken Bowden will officiate. There will be no visitation.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Kobler Center/DSNWK.

Imogene Cheever

Imogene Cheever
HERINGTON — Imogene Cheever, 86, former Ramona resident, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, at the Newman Regional Health Center of Emporia.

She was born Oct. 21, 1921, in Hoisington, the daughter of Vincent M. and Mildred V. (Tyrrell) Davis.

She married Harry L. Cheever on Sept. 14, 1942, at Council Grove. He preceded her in death on June 8, 2005.

Mrs. Cheever was a homemaker. She was a past member of the Lost Springs Methodist Church. She worked more than 10 years at the Lutheran Home in Herington. She was a resident since November 2005 at the Chase County Care Home in Cottonwood Falls.

Survivors include a daughter, Judy Ann Laney of Cottonwood Falls; three sons, Dennis Cheever of Wichita, Ronald Cheever of Arkansas City and Garry Kuether of Augusta; 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren and 11 stepgreat-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by two brothers, Ray Davis and Virgil Davis.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, at the Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Herington Chapel. Burial will follow at the Lost Springs Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Victory in the Valley of Wichita and sent in care of Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home & Crematory, Herington Chapel, 404 S. Broadway, Herington, KS 67449-3038.

Edwin Brockmeier

HERINGTON — Edwin C. Brockmeier, 93, of Herington, died Monday Sept. 1, 2008, at Medicalodges of Herington.

He was born Feb. 15, 1915, in Hope, the son of William and Clara (Neis) Brockmeier. He graduated in 1934 from Herington High School and was a corporal in the U.S. Army Aircorps during World War II. He worked at Cessna Aircraft for 36 years, retiring in 1977.

He married Lucille M. Gehrke on Dec. 12, 1947, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Herington.

He and his wife retired to Shell Knob, Mo., on Table Rock Lake. They lived in Herington from 1987 through 2002; then returned to their home in Wichita.

He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Herington.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille, of the home; a daughter, Barbara Lynne Kelley of Winfield; a stepdaughter, Linda Lee Sloan of Wichita; one sister, Dorothy Weber of Herington; a half-sister, Mildred Gehrke of Herington; two grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and one great-granddaughter; four step great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Iola Valentine; a sister, four stepsisters, two stepbrothers and a half brother.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Herington. Pastor Troy Slater will officiate. Burial will follow at the Lincolnville Cemetery with full military honors.

Friends may call at the Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Herington Chapel, from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday and at the church Friday from 9:30 a.m. until time of service.

A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church or Dickinson County Hospice and sent in care of the Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home & Crematory, Herington Chapel, 404 S. Broadway, Herington, Kansas, 67449-3038.

Berta Nicholson
NEWTON — Berta Nicholson, 88, of Newton, died Sunday, July 13, 2008, at Asbury Park Healthcare in Newton.

She was born Nov. 27, 1919, in Blanco, Okla., the daughter of Landon “Lon” and Addie Keirsey.

She married Ed Klufa. Following his death, she married Clarence Nicholson. He also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Nicholson was a homemaker and long-time childcare provider.

Survivors include four sons, Ken and Mary Klufa of Wichita, Gary and Terry Klufa of Thayer, Clayton and Mona Nicholson of Littleton, Colo., and Brad Nicholson; one daughter, Kay Wilson of Salina; 15 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her father, Landon Keirsey; mother, Addie (Hendrix) Keirsey; a stillborn infant; 12 brothers and sisters; a son, Charles Nicholson; and a granddaughter, Cindy Stump.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 18, 2008, at the Petersen Funeral Home Chapel in Newton, with Pastor Terry Tariela from the First Baptist Church, Newton, officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Gardens of Memory in Newton.

Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Petersen Funeral Home.

ATWOOD — Lila J. Steele, 80, died Monday, July 14, 2008.

She was born Lila Schlesener on March 13, 1938, in Dickinson County, near Hope.

Survivors include her husband, Gerald, of the home; sisters, Burma Hanschu and Doris Sly, both of Herington, and Joyce Loe and Phyllis Perry, both of Hope.

The funeral was at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at United Methodist Church in Atwood. Burial was in Atwood Fairview Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Atwood Good Samaritan Center and Hospice Service, Inc.

Williams Funeral Home, Atwood, is in charge of arrangements.

Joan G. Parrigon

PIERCE CITY, Mo. -- Joan G. Parrigon, 77, Pierce, City Mo., died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, after a short illness.

She was born Jan. 23, 1931, in Hildreth, Neb., the daughter of John Jurgen Ubben and Meta Johanna Stuhmer Ubben.

At age 18, Joan married Edward J. Parrigon on Oct. 29, 1949, and moved to Pierce City where she remained the rest of her life. They were married for 36 years until his death in 1986. They were blessed with 13 children.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pierce City, where she was active in the Altar Society and Women’s Circle. She was a retired cafeteria worker for St. Mary’s Elementary School and Pierce City High School.

Joan devoted her life to her husband and raising her children. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was an avid reader and enjoyed word puzzles and writing.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, Daniel Ray Parrigon and sister Clarice Priest.
Joan is survived by a sister, Dorothy Klahn of Denver, Colo.; a brother, John Ubben, Allendale, Mich.; her children, Kathy and Walt Houck of Wentworth, Mo., David and Kathy Parrigon of Monett, Mo., Mike and Terri Parrigon of Joplin, Mo., Pat and Alicia Parrigon of Monett, Mo., Susan Patterson of Joplin, Mo., Teresa and Sid Jordan of Ozark, Mo., Lauri and Mike King of Ashburn, Va., Greg and Mary Parrigon of Neosho, Mo., Dianna and Steve Lobdell of Springfield, Mo., Philip and Mary Parrigon of Leawood, Kan., Angela and David Elliott of Abilene, Kan. and Steven Parrigon of Joplin, Mo.

She is also survived by 25 grandchildren: Matt and Evelle Houck, Becky and Tim Anderson, Jacob and Sheena Parrigon, Katie Parrigon, John and Erin Parrigon, Paul Parrigon, Chris Parrigon, Sarah and Jason Stumbo, Grace and Mattie Parrigon, Ryan Patterson, Danny Patterson, Kelly Patterson, Matthew and Taylor Jordan, Margaret and Joseph King, Aubrey and Tyler Parrigon, Jared and Landon Lobdell, Sammy and Tommy Parrigon, Dalton and Abigail Elliott. Eight great-grandchildren: Josh Lyall, Jodi, Cassi and Melody Anderson, Sydney and Emma Parrigon, Michael Parrigon and Danielle Patterson. Survivors also include several brothers- and sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the staff of St. John’s Hospital, Springfield, Mo., for their extraordinary love and care during her illness.

A rosary service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, at Wessell Funeral Home in Pierce City, Mo., followed by visitation. A funeral mass will be said at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Pierce City, Mo., with graveside services to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Donations may be made to St. Mary’s Elementary School, Pierce City, in her memory.
