Terry S. Heckman
LIBERAL - Terry S. Heckman, 59, died Dec. 14, 2004, at St. Francis Hospital, Wichita.

He was born June 28, 1945, at Liberal, the son of Lawrence and Ruth Heckman. He graduated from Liberal High School. He received his bachelor's degree from Southwestern College, Winfield, and earned his master's degrees from the University of Dallas, Irving, Texas. A lifelong resident of Liberal, he was an art instructor for Seward County Community College. He retired from there in 1995. He was an acclaimed artist who won several awards, including one for his oil design for the Kansas Artist Postcard Series. His works have been exhibited throughout the country, most recently in California, Phoenix and Colorado. He is remembered for his painting of the Pancake Race between Liberal and Olney, England, depicting the 50th anniversary of the race.

Survivors include: a son, Matthew, Ulysses; a daughter, Stephanie Heckman Kamla, Merriam; a sister, Linda Ball, Indianapolis; and three grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at SCCC Theater.

Dollye E. Thurow
MACKSVILLE - Dollye E. Thurow, 101, died Dec. 14, 2004, at Manor of the Plains Nursing Home, Dodge City.

She was born Aug. 30, 1903, at Macksville, the daughter of O.M. and Abby E. McNinch Young. She graduated from Fort Hays College and Southwestern College, Winfield. A Dodge City resident, she was a schoolteacher at Copeland, Dodge City, Great Bend and St. John.

She belonged to the Methodist churches at Great Bend and Macksville.

In 1955, she married Russell Thurow at Macksville. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include: many nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Hobart Young.

Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church, Macksville, with Pastor Elaine Lord presiding. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Farmington Cemetery, Macksville.

Memorials may be sent to the church, in care of the funeral home.

Ferne King
NEWTON - Ferne King, 93, died Dec. 11, 2004, at her home, Newton.

She was born Jan. 1, 1911, at Newton, the daughter of Ben and Mable Luginbill Cushing. She was a resident of Newton, formerly of Stafford.

She belonged to First Methodist Church, Stafford.

On April 8, 1936, she married James Luther King at Newkirk, Okla. He died June 21, 1967.

Survivors include numerous cousins.

She was preceded in death by her twin sister, Faye F. Thimm.

A private graveside service will be Friday in Greenwood Cemetery, Newton. Petersen Funeral Home, Newton, is in charge of arrangements.

Wayne Eugene Unruh
GREAT BEND - Wayne Eugene Unruh, 82, died June 19, 2004, at Central Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend.

He was born Dec. 13, 1921, at Pawnee Rock, the son of Otis and Lena Schultz Unruh. A lifetime resident of the Great Bend area, he had been a lineman for Central Kansas Electric and a farmer.

He belonged to Our Savior Lutheran Church, Great Bend.

On Oct. 29, 1945, he married Selma Werhahn at Ellinwood. She survives.

Other survivors include: two brothers, Elgie, Pawnee Rock, and Laramie, Great Bend; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Juletha Fox.

There will be a private family graveside service. There will be no visitation.

Memorials may be sent to Our Savior Lutheran Church or to a charitable organization of the donor's choice, both in care of Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend.

Edward Eugene 'Gene' Aves
MACKSVILLE - Edward Eugene "Gene" Aves, 72, died June 18, 2004, at Hospice House, Pratt.

He was born Nov. 6, 1931, at Hopewell, the son of John Emerson and Leatha Marie Aves. A resident of Macksville since 1948, he was a seed sales representative for Asgrow Seed Co.

He belonged to Macksville Christian Church, the American Legion, Macksville, and Veterans of Foreign Wars, St. John. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

On Jan. 21, 1951, he married Norma Jean Suiter at Macksville. She survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Dan, Macksville; a daughter, Pam Wellman, Springfield, Mass; a sister, Peggy Wilson, Macksville; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Donald Wayne.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Macksville Christian Church, with Carey Haner presiding. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday at Minnis Chapel Inc., Macksville. Burial will be in Farmington Cemetery, Macksville.

Memorials may be sent to South Wind Hospice, in care of the chapel.

Charles E. Ryan
SCOTT CITY - Charles E. Ryan, 56, died June 17, 2004, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

He was born Feb. 18, 1948, at Scott City, the son of Glen E. and Helen J. Hooper Ryan. A lifetime resident of Scott City, he was a truck driver for Pile Trucking.

He belonged to Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Scott City Ward.

Survivors include: his parents, Scott City; a brother, Dean K., Garden City; five sisters, Glenda Jo Glenn, Odenville, Ala., Susan E. Shaff, Cedarvale, Janet K. Unruh, Dodge City, Tami K. Brewer, Wildomar, Calif., and Sharlyn D. Ryan, Avondale, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Larry E. and Jay Dee.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Scott City Ward, with Bishop Dick Cockerill presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at Price and Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Burial will be in Scott City Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the Ryan Missionary Fund, in care of the funeral home.

Roger Duane Richter
GREAT BEND - Roger Duane Richter, 48, died June 16, 2004, southwest of Great Bend.

He was born May 5, 1956, at St. John, the son of Richard Richter and Leila Griffitt. A lifetime resident of the Great Bend area, he was a truck salesman for Peterbilt, Great Bend, LLC/Larson GMC, Great Bend.

He belonged to First Congregational United Church of Christ, Elks Lodge and the Lake Barton Golf Club, all at Great Bend, Isis Shrine Temple, Salina, AOPA and KMCA.

On June 21, 1980, he married Jacque Barnett at Great Bend. She survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, Jesse Duane and Nicholas Michael, both of the home; his father, Timken; his mother, Hoisington; a brother, Scott, Timken; a sister, Vicky Morrison, Albert; and his grandmother.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Carla Boese.

Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Congregational United Church of Christ, Great Bend, with the Rev. Diana Coberly presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend.

Memorials may be sent to Great Bend Relay for Life or Great Bend Kids Wrestling, both in care of the funeral home.

Robert Walker Sr.
ANTHONY - Robert Walker Sr., 56, died June 18, 2004, at Anthony.

He was born Aug. 12, 1947, at Anthony, the son of Roy and Alice Walker. He worked at Morrison Belt Co.

Survivors include: a son, Robert Jr., Pratt; a daughter, Sandra Walker, Anthony; three brothers, John, Colorado, Jim, Texas, and Leroy, Anthony; three sisters, Rose Walker, Texas, and Betty Hawley and Millie Davidson, both of Carmen, Okla.; and five grandchildren.

Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Spring Grove Cemetery, Anthony, with Mike Friend presiding.

Elliott Mortuary, Anthony, is in charge of arrangements.

Kathleen M. Nutt
GREAT BEND - Kathleen M. Nutt, 87, died June 17, 2004, at Alterra Sterling House, Great Bend.

She was born June 14, 1917, at Philadelphia, the daughter of Bernard J. and Catherine Corrigan Morris.

A resident of Great Bend since 1962, moving from Ellinwood, she was a former secretary for the Barton County Health Department.

She belonged to St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and Altar Society, both at Great Bend.

She served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II as a corporal.

On Dec. 23, 1944, she married Ted L. Nutt at Waco, Texas. He died Sept. 19, 2002.

Survivors include: a sister, Mae R. Snyder, Philadelphia; and many nephews and nieces.

Altar Society rosary will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, and vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m., both at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Great Bend, with Father Ted Stoecklein presiding. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard.

Memorials may be sent to Catholic Community of Great Bend, in care of the funeral home.

Elida G. Rowland
Elida G. Rowland, 95, died June 18, 2004, at Good Samaritan Center, Hutchinson.

She was born April 30, 1909, at San Diego, Texas, the daughter of Frailan and Francesca Garza. A Hutchinson resident since the early 1970s, formerly of Garden City, she was a homemaker.

She belonged to St. Teresa's Catholic Church, Hutchinson.

Mrs. Rowland treasured her religious faith and cherished her immediate and extended family. Beyond her family circle, friends and acquaintances also called her "Grandma." She loved to pray the rosary and enjoyed crocheting. She also enjoyed playing bingo, traveling with family members and going out to eat with them, and watching wrestling on TV together with one of her daughters. She always thought of others before herself.

In 1929, she married Pedro S. Rowland at Kingsville, Texas. He died in November 1992.

Survivors include: two sons, Ray Rowland and Pete Rowland Jr., both of Garden City; two daughters, Frances Bribiesca, Hutchinson, and Irene Ortiz, Chino, Calif.; 30 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Israel and Alonzo Rowland; two daughters, Mary Herrera and infant Linda Cecille Rowland; a brother, Jose Garza; a grandson, Ruben Herrera; and two granddaughters, Yolanda Chavez and infant Trina Herrera.

Parish rosary will be at 7 p.m. Monday at St. Teresa's Catholic Church, Hutchinson. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with Father Stuart M. Smeltzer presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with Father Joseph Bahr presiding.

Memorials may be sent to the church in care of the mortuary.
