Clarence E. Rose
KIOWA - Clarence Earl Rose, 82, died Oct. 29, 2004, at Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita.

He was born April 6, 1922, near Waldron, the son of Albert Arthur and Sarah Lydia Eves Rose. He graduated from high school at Kiowa in 1940. A resident of Kiowa, he was a farmer and stockman.

He belonged to United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school for many years and served as lay leader to annual conference for 15 years. He held many offices in the local church as well as serving on the district and conference level. He served as trustee of Kiowa Township, was on the board of Kiowa Co-op grocery store and was on the ASCS Board, Medicine Lodge.

On Dec. 31, 1945, he married Corrine Brattin. She survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Doug, Kiowa; a daughter, Nancy Copeland, Phoenix; a brother, Lester, Hutchinson; two sisters, Eunice Stark, Kingman, and Phyllis Jefferies, Wisconsin; five granddaughters; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by six brothers, Herbert, Bennie, Bill, Russell, Lewis and Mike; and a sister, Elizabeth Rousseau.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at United Methodist Church, with Pastor Wayne Stephens presiding. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery. The casket will be open from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Lanman Funeral Home Inc., Kiowa, and at the church before the service.

Memorials may be sent to United Methodist Church or American Heart Association, both in care of the funeral home.

Frances I. Dwinger
LARNED - Frances I. Dwinger, 81, died Oct. 29, 2004, at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital, Larned.

She was born March 31, 1923, at Littleton, Colo., the daughter of George H. and Grace Williams Banes. A Larned resident since 1980, she was a homemaker.

She belonged to Church of the Nazarene.

On Nov. 4, 1959, she married Henry A. Dwinger at Hamburg, Iowa. He died Feb. 1, 1979.

Survivors include: a son, Robert Banes, Hammon, Okla.; three daughters, Cynthia Owen, Hamburg, Iowa, Grace Clawson, Larned, and Gail Dwinger, Elk City, Okla.; a stepson, Delaine Dwinger, Coos Bay, Ore.; a stepdaughter, Charlene Bowden, Redlands, Calif.; a sister, Nancy Smith, Hutchinson; 24 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Gene Banes, and two sisters, Viola Nogle and Ruth Cox.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Morell Funeral Home, Larned, with Pastor Leroy Lyon presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to service time on Thursday at the funeral home. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Elmwood Cemetery, Coin, Iowa.

Isabelle T. Jacobs
HOISINGTON - Isabelle T. Jacobs, 84, died Oct. 30, 2004, at Cheyenne Meadows Living Center, Hoisington.

She was born June 29, 1920, at Redwing, the daughter of August and Louise Tinkel Schremmer. A resident of Hoisington since 1944, moving from Tulelake, Calif., she was a homemaker.

She belonged to St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Altar Society, Daughters of Isabella and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

On Oct. 13, 1943, she married Vincent Jacobs at Beaver. He died Dec. 9, 1988.

Survivors include: a brother, August Schremmer; and a sister, Dorothy Polzin, both of Hoisington.

She was preceded in death by six brothers, William, Walter, Tony, Lawrence, Edward and John, an infant; and two infant sisters, Mary and Florentine.

Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington, with Altar Society rosary following. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Hoisington, with Father Pascal Klein presiding. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Hoisington.

Memorials may be sent to St. John Catholic Church, Cheyenne Meadows Living Center or South Wind Hospice, Pratt, all in care of the funeral home.

Alva E. Rexford
MEADE - Alva E. Rexford, 88, died Oct. 29, 2004, at Meade District Hospital.

He was born Nov. 19, 1915, at Montezuma, the son of Theron and Mae Waters Rexford. He graduated from Meade High School as salutatorian. He attended the University of Kansas for two years. He then was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md. In 1944, he purchased the livestock auction at Meade, and in 1946, he purchased the livestock auction at Dalhart, Texas, operating both of them for several years. He was a retired farmer and stockman.

He belonged to United Methodist Church and Webb Lodge No. 275 AF and AM, having been a member for 57 years, both at Meade, and Wichita Consistory Scottish Rite as a 32nd degree Mason, for 56 years.

On March 24, 1940, he married Dorothy Wilson at Dodge City. She survives, Meade.

Other survivors include: two sons, Gary, Topeka, and Buck, Meade; a brother, Chester, Montezuma; a sister, Lois Johnson, Wheatridge, Colo.; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Funeral will be at 3 p.m. Monday at United Methodist Church, Meade, with the Rev. Susan Greene presiding. Friends may call from 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary, Meade. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Meade.

Memorials may be sent to the church in care of the funeral home.

Dorothy L. Withrow
Dorothy Lucille Withrow, 88, died Oct. 29, 2004, at Buhler Sunshine Home.

Arrangements are pending and will be announced by Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.

Visitation for Marilyn Jane Olson, 71, also will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses.

Pauline B. VanBuskirk
SPRING HILL - Pauline Belle VanBuskirk, 92, died Oct. 29, 2004, at Royal Terrace Nursing Center, Olathe.

She was born Aug. 25, 1912, in Lincoln County. A resident of Spring Hill since 1999, moving from Kingman, also formerly of Lincoln and Hutchinson, she was a bag turner for Hutchinson Bag Co. in the 1960s and a homemaker.

On July 13, 1966, she married L.L. VanBuskirk at Miami, Okla. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include: a son; a daughter; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Lincoln Cemetery, Lincoln.

Memorials may be sent to Nazarene World Missions in care of the funeral home.

Freda Davis
WICHITA - Freda Lorraine Davis, 82, homemaker, died Oct. 27, 2004.

Freda leaves to cherish: her daughter, Jane Campbell, Wichita; sons, Charles (Constance) Davis, Valley Center, Tom (Kathy) Davis, Vienna, Va., Jim (Sandi) Davis, Norman, Okla., Walt (Sherry) Davis, Choctaw, Okla.; a brother, Galen (Lorena) Showalter, Eugene, Ore.; sisters-in-law, Reba (Jack) Grady, Wichita, Ruby Showalter, Hutchinson; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Lakeview Funeral Home Chapel, Wichita. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be sent to First Church of the Brethren, in care of the funeral home.

Elsie F. Winter
MARION - Elsie F. Winter, 85, died Oct. 29, 2004, at Presbyterian Manor, Arkansas City.

She was born Dec. 17, 1918, at Marion. A longtime resident of Marion, living the last few years at Arkansas City, she was a former restaurant owner and cook at local schools and restaurants.

On June 29, 1941, she married Ed Winter at Marion. He died in 1987.

Survivors include: a son; a sister, Opal Lambert, Peabody; two grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and nephews and nieces.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Marion Christian Church, with the Rev. Carl Helm presiding. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Zeiner Funeral Home, Marion. Burial will be in Marion Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the church in care of the funeral home.

Patricia I. Schartz
ELLINWOOD - Patricia I. Schartz, 65, died Dec. 17, 2004, at Great Bend.

She wasborn Jan. 6, 1939, at Eureka the daughter of Clyde and Marie Austin Walford. Moving to Ellinwood, she was a 1956 graduate of Ellinwood Rural High School. She was produce manager at Rocky's IGA, and manager/bartender at Grove Park Golf Club, both at Ellinwood.

She belonged to St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Ellinwood, the Bunco Card Club and was an avid bingo player.

On Oct. 27, 1956, she married Raymond (Junior) Schartz. He died April, 20, 1990.

Survivors include: two sons, Brian and Gary, both of Ellinwood; three daughters, Debra Panning, Great Bend, Diana Jackson, Ellinwood, and Brenda Schartz, Abilene; a brother Donald Walford, Owasso, Okla.; 11 grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Rosary will be 3 p.m. with vigil service at 7 p.m. Monday at Kimple Funeral Home, Ellinwood. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Ellinwood, with Father John Maes presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lakin-Comanche District Cemetery, Ellinwood.

Memorials may be sent to Ellinwood Public School and Library Foundation or to the St. Joseph's School Endowment, both in care of the funeral home.

Vera Short
DODGE CITY - Vera A. Short, 82, died Dec. 18, 2004, at Manor of the Plains, Dodge City.

She was born May 22, 1922, at Walnut, the daughter of William and Cora Kennedy Simmons. A southwest area resident since 1936 moving from Walnut, she was a homemaker.

She belonged to Liberal Friends Church, Liberal, and the Belle Hayne HDU.

On July 14, 1940, she married Charles Edward Short at Kinsley. He died Sept. 1, 2004.

Other survivors include: three daughters, Delilah Winkler, Hoisington, Carole Racy, Ensign and Judy Stevens, Wichita; 10 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Manford, Everett and Ralph Simmons; and three sisters, Olive Studivan, Irene Nicholson and Hazel Penka.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City, with the Rev. Dick Robbins presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday at Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the Kansas Veterans Cemetery, Fort Dodge.

Memorials may be sent to Hospice of the Prairie or to Manor of the Plains, both in care of the funeral home.

Ruth E. Rogers
ELLSWORTH - Ruth E. Rogers, 83, died Dec. 18, 2004, at Good Samaritan Retirement Village, Lyons.

She was born Nov. 30, 1921, at Boston, the daughter of Henry R. and Georgiana E. Perkins Walker. An Ellsworth resident since 1968, moving from Great Bend, she was an artist and past owner of Rogers Art Gallery, Ellsworth.

She belonged to Holy Apostles Episcopal Church, Ellsworth, Holy Apostles Women and Ellsworth Fine Arts Club. She was past board member of the Ellsworth Area Arts Council.

On Dec. 27, 1954, she married Charles B. Rogers at Las Vegas. He died Dec. 10, 1987.

Survivors include: a son, Robert C., Ellsworth.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Holy Apostles Episcopal Church, Ellsworth, with Fathers Kevin Schmidt and Layne Smith presiding. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Parsons Funeral Home, Ellsworth. The casket will remain closed. Burial will be in Ellsworth Memorial Cemetery.
