Orley P. Edmonston
PROTECTION - Orley Paul Edmonston, 87, died Dec. 20, 2004, at Protection Valley Manor, Protection.

He was born July 14, 1917, on the family farm 5 miles north of Protection, the son of Orley M. and Edna Snell Edmonston. He was nearly a lifetime resident of Protection, living in Wichita for three years while working for Beech Aircraft. He attended grade school in the Prairie Queen and Enterprise districts and graduated from Protection High School in 1937. He was a rural mail carrier for many years.

He belonged to Protection First Christian Church, Protection Masonic Lodge No. 384 for 50 years, Wichita Consistory, American Legion and National Rural Letter Carriers' Association. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving from 1943 to 1945.

On March 20, 1938, he married Frances Rainbolt at Garden City. She survives.

Other survivors include: a son, James Ray "Jim", Fernley, Nev.; a daughter, Peggy Sue Nickeson, Aurora, Colo.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Elmer, Harold and Granville; and a sister, Ivah Rash.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Christian Church, Protection, with Andrew Evans presiding. Burial will be in ProtectionCemeterywith full military honors. Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Hatfield - Prusa Funeral Home, Coldwater. Memorials may be sent to First Christian Church, South Wind Hospice or Protection Valley Manor, all in care of the funeral home.

Paul P. Kinkelaar
DODGE CITY - Paul P. Kinkelaar, 81, died Dec. 19, 2004, at Kansas Soldiers Home, Halsey Hall, Fort Dodge.

He was born Nov. 24, 1923, at Wright, the son of Herman W. and Anna J. Lutz Kinkelaar. A lifetime area resident, he was a farmer and carpenter, retiring in 1985.

He belonged to Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Howard Gotschall Veteran of Foreign Wars Post No. 1714, both of Dodge City. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, serving as corporal.

On Dec. 27, 1949, he married Betty Shea at Dodge City. She survives.

Other survivors include: five sons, Richard, Greg, Christopher and Charles, all of Dodge City, and Rob, Fort Collins, Colo.; a daughter, Rose Mary Bradley, Englewood, Colo.; and eight grandchildren.

Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Dodge City, with Father Ted A. Skalsky and Father Wesley W. Schawe presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel. Burial will be in Greencrest Memorial Gardens, Dodge City, with full military graveside rites by Howard Gotschall VFW Post No. 1714.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Sacred Heart School Endowment, Hospice of the Prairie or Kansas Soldiers Home, all in care of the funeral chapel.

Wanda C. Hahn
GARDEN CITY - Wanda C. Hahn, 84, died Dec. 18, 2004, at St. Catherine Hospital, Garden City.

She was born March 17, 1920, near Sturgis, Okla., the daughter of Lester A. and Bertha May Toliver Gerkin. She graduated from Kinsley High School, Kinsley, in 1938. A resident of rural Garden City, formerly of Washington, D.C., and Northern Finney County, she was a homemaker and had worked for the War Department at Washington, D.C.

She belonged to St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City; and Daughters of Isabella; served as a lector at the church; served as a past president for the Eagles Auxiliary, Garden City; helped as a Bingo caller at the Veterans of Foreign Wars; and served as an Emcee at various banquets and conventions.

On April 20, 1944, she married Lester "Hap" Hahn at Durham, N.C. He died May 20, 1973.

Survivors include: two sons, Daryl and Gregory, both of Garden City; four daughters, Dodie Gerber and Carol Heinemann, both of Garden City, Patty VanCampen, Holcomb, and Sheila Hulett, Colwich; a sister, Joyce Gardner, Williston, N.D.; 22 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Edith Woolsey, Thelma Turner, Vesta Turner and Ola Mae Schinstock; and a grandson.

Vigil service will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with Father James E. Baker presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Garden City.

Memorials may be sent to Wanda C. Hahn Memorial Fund, in care of the funeral home, 412 North 7th, Garden City, KS 67846.

Frank W. Johnston
LAVERNE, Okla. - Frank William "Johnny" Johnston, 81, died Dec. 19, 2004, at Intergris Bass Baptist Hospital, Enid, Okla.

He was born Oct. 12, 1923, at Selman, Okla., the son of Charles and Susan Singer Johnston. A resident of Enid for three years, formerly of Laverne, he graduated from Cheraw High School, Cheraw, Colo., in 1942. He was a truck driver for Enron Gas Co.

He belonged to American Legion Post No. 313, Apostolic Faith Church, Laverne, and Laverne's E.M.T.s.

On Feb. 4, 1949, he married Willa Dean Johnston at Perryton, Texas. She survives.

Other survivors include: foster family, Al and Sonja Harris; two brothers, Floyd, Scottsdale, Ark., and Roy, Aurora, Colo.; four sisters, Mildred Fritz, Las Aninars, Colo., Lillie Glover, Colorado Springs, Colo., Margaret Coish, Plainwell, Mich., and Malinda Ridley, Fayetteville, Ark.; a grandson, Wade Harris, Laverne; and a granddaughter, Shawna Watkins.

He was preceded in death by a twin brother, Fred; two other brothers, Milton and Wesley; and a sister, Grace Hambleton.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Apostolic Faith Church, Laverne, with the Rev. James Brown and the Rev. James Wallis presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Myatt-Seeger Funeral Home. Burial will be in Laverne Memorial Cemetery.

Ada Mae Griffith
ELLSWORTH - Ada Mae Griffith, 88, died Dec. 19, 2004, at Wilson Nursing Home, Wilson.

She was born April 1, 1916, at Carneiro, the daughter of Charles Benjamin and Jennie Frances Elias Hoffman. A lifetime resident of Ellsworth County, she taught school for a few years at the Kanopolis School and was a homemaker.

On April 30, 1944, she married Robert B. Griffith at Ellsworth. He died March 23, 1985.

Survivors include: two sons, Harold and Larry, both of Ellsworth; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Hoffman; and a grandson.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Parsons Funeral Home, Ellsworth. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 8 a.m. until service time Wednesday, both at the funeral home. Burial will be in Ellsworth Memorial Cemetery, Ellsworth.

Memorials may be sent to Wilson Nursing Home, in care of the funeral home.

Geneva B. Henry
TOPEKA - Geneva B. Henry, 81, of Topeka, died Dec. 19, 2004, at Midland Hospice House.

She was born April 30, 1923, at Hutchinson, the daughter of Glenn D. and Lorena G. Brown. She attended public schools in the Hutchinson area as well as Hutchinson Community College, Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia, and the University of Kansas, graduating in 1945. She worked for the Hutchinson Board of Education for 12 years. She then moved to Topeka and went to work for the Topeka Board of Education until 1966. She worked at Washburn University as associate registrar, retiring in 1981.

She was an active member of First United Methodist Church, where she sang for many years in the sanctuary choir. She was a member of the Breakfast Club Sunday school class. She and her husband were frequent volunteers for clerical work in the church office. She was also a member of the Washburn University Retired Employee's Club and the BNSF Retired Employee's Club. She was a charter member and past director of the Santa Fe Singers, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, chapter No. 464, and a member of the YWCA.

On Aug. 5, 1961, she married Albert E. Henry Jr. at Topeka. He survives.

Other survivors include: a stepson, Albert E. Henry III and wife, Joanne, Colorado City, Colo.; a nephew, Jefferson Melland Brown and wife, Kathleen, Pinedale, Wyo.; and three nieces, Regan Marie Brown, Austin, Texas, Rebecca Lee Pyle and husband, George, and two sons, Graham and MacGeorge, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Cordelia Brink Brown and, husband, Robert, her son, Max Howig, and stepdaughter, Carolyn Brown, Lawrence.

Mrs. Henry will lie in state after 2 p.m. Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, Topeka, where the family will greet friends from 7 to 8 p.m. that evening. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Klasse Chapel of First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Gardens.

Paul D. Powell
LARNED - Paul Dean "P.D." Powell, 69, died Dec. 16, 2004, at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital, Larned.

He was born April 21, 1935, at Medicine Lodge, the son of Edward and Mary Wilson Powell. A resident of Larned since 1982, he owned and operated Paul D. Powell Construction Co. as a grading contractor and also farmed northwest of Larned. He also was a former vo-tech teacher at Beloit. He grew up in the Hazelton area, graduating from the Kiowa school system in 1953 and attending Northwestern State Teachers College and the Methodist Church.

He belonged to ISIS Shrine and Masonic Lodge, Salina, and Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion, both at Larned. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, obtaining the rank of sergeant.

Survivors include: a son, Ryan, Strasberg, Colo.; a daughter, Brenda Powell-Smith, Wichita; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Ed Jr.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel, Larned, with the Rev. Elizabeth Kirkwood and Father Dennis Reed presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary. Cremation will take place after the service. Inurnment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hazelton.

Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society or the Great Bend Humane Society, both in care of Beckwith Mortuary Inc., Larned.

Warren Tatman
LEBO - Warren Tatman, 82, died Dec. 19, 2004, at Newton Medical Center, Newton. He was a resident of Lebo.

He was the father of Vaughn Eldon Tatman, Macksville, and the brother of Iown Dreeks, Leoti.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Friends Christian Church, 6th and Sylan, Emporia.

Arrangements will be handled by Jones VanArsdale Funeral Home, Lebo.

Noel G. Omlor
GREAT BEND - Noel G. Omlor, 87, died Dec. 19, 2004, at Central Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend.

He was born June 28, 1917, at Pawnee Rock, the son of James P. and Gertrude E. Zieber Omlor. A resident of Great Bend since 1979, moving from Seward and Larned, he was a farmer, salesman for Brentwood Ltd., and automobile salesman for Bordewick Ford and Houser Chevrolet, both at Larned.

He belonged to First Christian Church, American Legion, and was a former member of the Noon Lions Club. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving with the rank of sergeant.

On Dec. 25, 1940, he married Pauline Dralle at Great Bend. She survives.

Other survivors include: two daughters, Jeannine Coursen, Huntington, Pa., and Jane Eneff, Tulsa, Okla.; a sister, Marjorie Weathers, Galt, Ga.; and three grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Christian Church, Great Bend, with the Rev. William F. Johnson presiding. Burial will be in Great Bend Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend.

Memorials may be sent to the First Christian Church Building Fund, in care of the funeral home.

Ethel Ritta Knobbe
SPEARVILLE - Ethel Ritta Knobbe, 87, died Dec. 20, 2004, at Trinity Manor Nursing Home, Dodge City.

She was born Feb. 22, 1917, at Spearville, the daughter of Henry Bernard and Mary Amelia Kathman Knobbe. She was a nurse for Dr. Mandeville, Dr. Hort, Dr. O'Shea, Dr. Spears and Dr. Trekell.

She belonged to St. Johns the Baptist Catholic Church, Spearville.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Marcella Stein and Vera Kreutzer; and nine brothers, Lawrence, Ed, Gerome, Vincient, John, Joe, Ira, Ray and Eugene.

Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church, Spearville. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Jack Cuddigan, S.J., presiding. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Spearville. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City.

Memorials may be sent to the St. John'sCemeteryFund, in care of the funeral home.
