Sherrill A. Wedel
McPHERSON - Sherrill Ann Wedel, 62, died Jan. 26, 2005, at Hospice House, Hutchinson.
She was born on Aug. 1, 1942, at McPherson, the daughter of Walter and Margaret Schrag. She was a homemaker and helped with the family farm. In 1976, she founded Canterbury Tails Inc. She graduated from McPherson School of Practical Nursing in 1992.
She belonged to First Mennonite Church, McPherson.
On Aug. 6, 1961, she married
Tony Wedel at Moundridge. He survives.
Other survivors include: two sons, Kip, Salina, and Troy, McPherson; a daughter, Lauri Wedel-Isaacs and husband Mike, Hesston; a brother, Bob Schrag and wife Jenny, Galva; her parents, Moundridge; two grandsons, Alex and Aaron, Hesston; a nephew, Ben Schrag, Galva; and two nieces, Mary and Elizabeth Schrag, Galva.
Funeral will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at First Mennonite Church, McPherson, with the Rev. Leonard Wiebe presiding. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Moundridge Funeral Home. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Eden Mennonite Cemetery, Moundridge.

Barbara A. Kottwitz
Barbara Ann Kottwitz, 65, died Jan. 25, 2005, in the Hutchinson Hospital emergency room.
She was born June 26, 1939, at Oakland, Calif., the daughter of Charles Joseph and Lucy Emma Koehler Bellinghausen. A Hutchinson resident since 1996, she was a graduate of St. Mary of the Plains, Dodge City. She was an elementary school teacher at Groves, Texas; St. Jude, Wichita; Peabody and St. Mary's, Newton; and retired from St. Teresa's Catholic Grade School in 2001. She was a substitute teacher at St. Teresa's Catholic Grade School and was a lay participant with the Sisters of St. Joseph.
She belonged to St. Teresa's Catholic Church and the Red Hats Society.
On Sept. 28, 1974, she married
Max L. Kottwitz at Newton. He survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Mark L. Colby; a brother, Edward Bellinghausen, Knoxville, Tenn.; and three grandchildren.
Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Teresa's Catholic Church, Hutchinson, with Father Stuart M. Smeltzer presiding, with cremation following. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, all at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Parish rosary will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Elliott Chapel. Private inurnment will be in Prairie Lawn Cemetery, Peabody, at a later date.

Jean E. Stephens
ASHLAND - Jean Ellen Stephens, 74, died Jan. 25, 2005, at Comanche County Hospital, Coldwater.
She was born Sept. 18, 1930, at Burdett, the daughter of Edward G. and Ethel M. White Schroeder. A resident of Ashland, graduating from Pawnee Rock High School in 1948, she was a homemaker. She served on the Lexington Township board.
She belonged to Presbyterian Church, PEO, Eastern Star, BPW and 20th Century Club.
On Dec. 4, 1949, she married
John Douglass "Jack" Stephens at Ashland. He died Oct. 6, 1991.
Survivors include: two sons, John Edward "Steve" II, Ashland, and Donald Douglass, Chickasha, Okla.; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Presbyterian Church, Ashland, with the Rev. Baeney Kaebelik presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Myatt Funeral Home, Ashland. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ashland.

Douglas L. Clark
HOISINGTON - Douglas L. Clark, 79, died Jan. 24, 2005, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.
He was born Oct. 20, 1925, at Morland, the son of John and Margaret Clark Clark. A longtime resident of Hoisington, moving from Olmitz, he was a retired driller for Beredco Oil Co.
He attended Church of the Nazarene and was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7428, both at Hoisington. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II.
On Dec. 19, 1959, he married
Valta Farmer at Hoisington. She died Jan. 19, 2002.
Survivors include: three sons, Dusty, Hoisington, Russell, Ponca City, Okla., and Ricky, Olmitz; three daughters, Donelda Lindsey, Marland, Okla. Jana Shaw, La Crosse, and Jodee Demel, Claflin; three brothers, Charles, Keewanee, Wis., and Bryce and John Jr., both of Hoisington; four sisters, Marles Miller, Olympia, Wash., Shirley Hilburn, Hill City, Billye Yowell, Delphos, and Patty Colvalt, Riley; 20 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Dwight; and a sister, Enid Otis.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington, with the Rev. Don Fisher presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until service time Friday, both at the funeral home. Interment will be in Hoisington Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by American Legion Post No. 286 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7428.

Harlan M. Kasselman
LARNED - Harlan Melvin Kasselman, 68, died Jan. 25, 2005, at Cushing Memorial Hospital, Leavenworth.
He was born Sept. 4, 1936, at Larned, the son of Melvin and Dora Flanders Kasselman. He graduated from Zook Community High School and Wichita State University. A resident of Larned and Leavenworth, he was a retired teacher, coach and farmer.
He was of the Catholic faith. He was a past member of the Kansas Coaches Association.
Survivors include: Harlan Jr., Larned, Alan, Tonganoxie, and Brian, Rancho Santa Magarita, Calif.; a stepson, Vincent LoPresti, Dallas; his caregiver, Alice Kasselman, Leavenworth; two brothers, Max, Wichita, and Ralph, Ponca City, Okla.; two sisters, Ruth Steffen and Linda Parr, both of Larned; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert.
Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Morell Funeral Home, Larned. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned, with Father Dennis Reed presiding. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, both at the funeral home. Interment will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Zook.

Dorothy A. Arnett
Dorothy A. Arnett, 88, died Jan. 25, 2005, at Golden Plains Health Care Center, Hutchinson.
She was born July 11, 1916, in Reno County, the daughter of Robert B. and Viola Alice Chappel Stopher. A longtime resident of Reno County, she worked for Woolworth for more than 30 years, retiring in 1980.
On April 24, 1936, she married
Charles Cecil Arnett. He died May 1, 1980.
Survivors include: two sons, Lanny L., Kansas City, Mo., and Barry B., Hutchinson; a daughter, Dorothy Cobb, Hutchinson; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Sonny and Bud; and a sister, Barbara.
Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Penwell-Gabel's Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home and Crematory, Hutchinson.

Jacquelynn Engel
McPHERSON - Jacquelynn Oelrich Raymond Engel, 81, died Jan. 23, 2005, at Cedars Health Care Center, McPherson.
She was born April 23, 1923, at McPherson, the daughter of Jack and Anna Mae Conn Oelrich. She was a 1941 graduate of McPherson High School, attended Principia Junior College, St. Louis, from 1941 to 1943, graduated in 1965 with her bachelor's degree in English from McPherson College, and received her master's degree in journalism from the University of Kansas in 1972. A resident of McPherson, she was a homemaker and a teacher for USD 418, McPherson. From 1965 to 1966, she taught language arts at McPherson Junior High School. From 1966 to 1987, she taught English and journalism, at McPherson High School and from 1987 to 1990, she taught reporting, school publications and supervision and was the executive secretary for the Kansas Scholastic Press Association at KU. During the summers, she taught at Midwestern Journalism Camp, the school publications course and many journalism workshops at Kansas State University, Fort Hays State University, Bethany College and various workshops in Colorado, Indiana and Missouri.
She belonged to First Church of Christ, Scientist, Boston and Christian Science Society, McPherson. She was a member of many organizations, including the National and Kansas Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Phi Delta Kappa Internationa, Soroptimist International and the Kansas Association of Teachers of English. She received many awards, including the Golden Galleon Award from Jostens Publishing and Printing Co., the Pioneer Award from the National Scholastic Press, McPherson College Big Apple Award for distinguished teaching, Master Teacher of the Year Award from Emporia State University and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Journalism Education Association.
On July 14, 1945, she married
Don Raymond at McPherson. On Aug. 3, 1973, she married
V.O. Engel at McPherson. He died Jan. 16, 2004.
Survivors include: a son, Dennison Raymond, North Reading, Mass.; a sister, Georgana Crabbs, McPherson; and five grandchildren.
Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Congregational United Church of Christ, McPherson, with the Rev. Warren Schoming presiding. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. A private inurnment will take place in McPherson Cemetery.

Lois M. Cline
SAPULPA, Okla. - Lois M. Cline, 83, died Jan. 19, 2005, at Sapulpa, Okla.
She was born Aug. 31, 1921, at Turon, the daughter of Roby and Alta Branscom. A resident of Sapulpa for 50 years, she retired from Frankoma Pottery, where she worked as a trimmer.
She was a 50-year member of Sapulpa Church of the Nazarene, Sapulpa, Okla., where she had been very active.
Survivors include: three sons Jack and Danny Cline, both of Wilmore, and Dickie Cline, Wichita Falls, Texas; two daughters, Linda Fisher, Sand Springs, Okla., and Carol Napier, Broken Arrow, Okla.; three brothers, Bud Branscom, Turon, Dean Branscom, Hutchinson, and Richard Branscom, Nickerson; three sisters, Margaret Dykes, Great Bend, and Dorothy Helm and Karen Cooley, both of Hutchinson; 17 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
Funeral was held Jan. 22, 2005, at Sapulpa Church of the Nazarene, Sapulpa, Okla.
Shirley Y. Blackwell
KANSAS CITY - Shirley Yvonne Blackwell, 85, died Jan. 25, 2005, at Hidden Lakes Care Center, Kansas City, Mo.
She was born Dec. 28, 1919, at Wichita, the daughter of Walter and Ethel Cardner Griffith. A longtime Newton resident, she was a technical writer for Beech Aircraft Industry.
On June 9, 1937, she married
Leon Blackwell at El Dorado. He died Nov. 27, 2004.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel, Newton, with the Rev. Larry Logue presiding. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Herman H. Schwarz
NEWTON - Herman H. Schwarz, 84, died Jan. 24, 2005, at Newton Medical Center, Newton.
He was born May 29, 1920, at Offerle, the son of Fred and Katherine Burkhart Schwarz.
He belonged to the Elks Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion, all at Newton. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
On March 11, 1946, he married
Dorothy A. Hartman at Buffalo, Okla. She died Oct. 11, 2001. On May 30, 2003, he married
Ina M. Jones at Piggott, Ark. She survives.
Other survivors include: two sons, Charles B. and Deanna, Derby, and Kenneth E. and the Rev. Carolyn, Virginia Beach, Va.; a brother, Edward, Offerle; two sisters, Emma Kay Hempkin, Dodge City, and Maria Schmitt, Hoisington; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, Newton, with the Rev. Tim Connor, the Rev. Glen Perkins and the Rev. Gary Bell presiding.
