Helen L. Urban
Helen L. Urban, 88, died Oct. 11, 2004, at Hospice House, Hutchinson.

She was born Aug. 8, 1916, at Tonganoxie, the daughter of Charles and Theresa Werner Schich. A Hutchinson resident since 1974, moving from Pfeifer, she was a homemaker.

She belonged to St. Teresa's Catholic Church and Altar Society.

On June 12, 1939, she married Jerome E. Urban at Waterloo. He died July 1, 1991.

Survivors include: a son, Jerry Urban and wife, Rhoda, Victoria; two daughters, Darlene Schumacher and husband, LeRoy, and Geri Rome and husband, Jim, all of Hutchinson; six grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.

Parish rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Teresa's Catholic Church, with Father Stuart M. Smeltzer presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary. Burial will be in Fairlawn Burial Park.

Memorials may be sent to the church, Hospice of Reno County or a charity of the donor's choice, all in care of the mortuary.

Jack W. Richmond
MARION - Jack W. Richmond, 66, died Oct. 11, 2004, at Gasville, Ark.

He was born Oct. 29, 1937, at Antelope, the son of Clyde and Henrietta Conyers Richmond. A lifetime Marion resident, he was the owner of Marion Manufacturing and was a farmer.

He belonged to Eastmoor United Methodist Church, Marion, Society of Machine Engineers, Salina Chapter, and Quail Unlimited.

On Jan. 30, 1959, he married Joyce Pientka at Marion. She survives.

Other survivors include: three sons, Allan, David and Tim, all of Marion; a daughter, Jackie Palic, Marion; two brothers, Ralph and Jim Richmond, both of Marion; a sister, Evelyn Bredemeier, Marion; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Eastmoor United Methodist Church, Marion, with the Rev. John Goering presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Thursday at Zeiner Funeral Home, Marion. Burial will be in Marion Cemetery.

Eva Albright
HAZELTON - Eva Albright, 82, died Oct. 11, 2004, at Medicine Lodge.

She was born Feb. 7, 1922, in Alfalfa County, Okla., the daughter of Cecil and Elsie Bloom Alexander. She graduated from Kiowa High School in 1940. She was a homemaker.

She belonged to Untied Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She was a member of Eastern Star for 50 years, Kiowa Delphi Club and Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary and helped organize the Senior Citizen Center at Kiowa.

On Jan. 10, 1942, she married Bud Albright. He survives.

Other survivors include: two sons, Bob, Hazelton, and John, Dodge City; a sister, Fern Davis, Weatherford, Texas; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence and Virgil.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church, Kiowa, with Pastor Wayne Stephens presiding. The casket will be open from 12:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Lanman Funeral Home, Kiowa, and before service time Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to United Methodist Women's group or American Diabetes Association, both in care of the funeral home.

Ernest Glendon Martin
HARPER - Ernest Glendon Martin, 86, died Oct. 12, 2004, at his home, Harper.

He was born June 17, 1918, on a farm near Hazelton, the son of Earl and Mayme Garlow Martin. A Corwin community resident since 1945, he was a farmer and rancher.

He belonged to Methodist Church, Attica. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

On Aug. 29, 1942, he married Mary Bonham at Watertown, N.Y. She survives.

Other survivors include: three sons, Stanley, Flower Mound, Texas, Jim, Hutchinson, and Carl Martin, Sand Springs, Okla.; a brother, George Martin, Clovis, N.M.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Bernal Martin; a sister, Lavelle Martin; and a grandson.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church, Attica. Interment will be in Rosehill Cemetery, Hazelton.

Memorials may be sent to Methodist Church Library Fund, Attica, or Heritage Estates of Harper Parking Lot Improvement Fund, all in care of Elliott Mortuary, Anthony.

Lucian Fay Bishop
Lucian Fay Bishop, 65, died Oct. 11, 2004, at Via Christa Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

He was born May 27, 1939, at Sterling, the son of Lawrence and Grace Elstun Bishop. He was a graduate of Sterling High School and a longtime Hutchinson resident. He was retired.

Survivors include: a son, Ken, Hutchinson; two brothers, Lawrence Jr., Hutchinson, and Charles, California; two sisters, Mary Jo, Oklahoma, and Joyce, Alberta, Canada; and three grandchildren.

Cremation is planned. No services are scheduled.

Memorials may be sent to Lucian Bishop Memorial Fund, in care of Penwell-Gable Funeral Home and Crematory, Hutchinson, which is in charge of arrangements.

Lavonne Hall Smith
MAIZE - Lavonne Hall Smith, 71, died Oct. 12, 2004.

She was born June 21, 1933, at Rolla, the daughter of Paul Bentley and Melissa Ailene Randall Hall.

She married Ezra Smith. He survives.

Other survivors include: a son Gene Smith, Burrton; four daughters, including Carolyn Denning, Norwich; 19 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Westlink Christian Church, Wichita. Interment will be at 3 p.m. Friday in Sylvia Cemetery. Baker Funeral Home, Valley Center, is in charge of the arrangements.

Grace E. Greenwood
GARDEN CITY - Grace E. Greenwood, 77, died Oct. 1, 2004, at St. Catherine Hospital, Garden City.

She was born June 25, 1927, at Haskell County, the daughter of John F. and Minnie M. Gede Nusser. She graduated from Copeland High School, attended Dodge City Junior College and Fort Hays State University and received her teacher's certificate from Colorado State College of Education, Greeley, Colo. She taught for a few years in one-room schools at Copeland and Pierceville. She moved to Garden City and at various times did cleaning and ironing, worked at Dart-In and later was a receptionist at Garnand Funeral Home.

She belonged to Trinity Lutheran Church, Garden City.

On Oct. 3, 1950, she married Forest W. Uthe at Garden City. Later, on Dec. 25, 1971, she married T. J. Greenwood at Garden City. He died Sept. 26, 1978.

Survivors include: two sons, Richard W. and Larry L. Uthe, both of Garden City; two daughters, Patricia A. Schmidt and Pamela S. Yardley, both of Garden City; a brother, Herbert J. Nusser, Greeley, Colo.; four sisters, Edna Nelsen, Copeland, Lydia Springer and Leora J. Horst, both of Denver, and Ruth Wiens, Pratt; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Lyle Stuehrenberg presiding. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Memorials may be sent to the church building fund or the Bible Christian Church Building Fund, both in care of the funeral home.

Alvin G. Johnson
MACKSVILLE - Alvin G. Johnson, 75, died Sept. 30, 2004, at Leisure Homestead, St. John.

He was born Jan. 10, 1929, at Hopewell, the son of Henry and Bertha Woods Johnson. He attended school at Clear Creek, Pratt, and St. John's Military, Salina. A resident of St. John, he was an electrician working in Kansas and Texas and was a farmer and pilot.

He served in the U.S. Air National Guard.

Survivors include: a son, Henry, Phoenix; a daughter, Nancy Hall, Oklahoma City; and several grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Tommy, two half brothers, Robert Wood and Otis Johnson, and four half sisters, Jane Wilson, Blanche Clinton, Lola Hardy and Gladys Stambaugh.

Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Farmington Cemetery, Macksville, with Minister Elaine Lord presiding.

Memorials may be sent to Leisure Homestead, in care of Minnis Chapel Inc., Macksville.

Donald F. Powell
Donald F. Powell, 80, died Oct. 1, 2004, at Hospice House, Hutchinson.

He was born April 6, 1924, at Larned, the son of Thomas B. and Harriet Frazier Powell. He graduated from Larned High School in 1942 and he received his BA degree from Kansas University in 1952. He was employed at Lyons Savings and Loan until moving to Hutchinson in 1963, where he worked at Salt City Federal Savings and Loan and Valley Federal Savings and Loan as vice president and loan officer, retiring in 1989.

He belonged to First United Methodist Church and American Legion Lysle Rishel Post No. 68. He was a former member of the Rotary Club, he served 37 years on the National Jr. College Basketball Tournament Committee, he was a charter member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity at KU, third degree Mason with Masonic Lodge No. 15 AF and AM, Great Bend, and he was a member of Highland Golf Club.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946.

On April 4, 1954, he married Dolores Marie Bose at Larned. She survives.

Other survivors include: two daughters, Debra Stephan and husband Mo, Moundridge, and Deanna Willm, Hutchinson; a brother, Jack Powell, Las Vegas; a stepbrother, Marvin Converse, DeLand, Fla.; two grandchildren, Matt and wife Jenni Stephan, and Mandy Stephan; and a great-grandson, Landon.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Winifred Stanfield.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, and graveside service will be at 3:30 p.m. in Larned Cemetery, both on Tuesday, with the Rev. Mark Conard presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.

Memorials may be sent to First United Methodist Church or Hospice of Reno County, both in care of the mortuary.
