Phares Loucks
HESSTON - Phares Loucks, 93, died Oct. 18, 2004, at Schowalter Villa, Hesston.

He was born Jan. 16, 1911, at Canton, the son of Joseph and Clara Bitikofer Loucks. He lived in McPherson County until 1966, moving to Hesston. He was a farmer.

He belonged to Hesston Mennonite Church.

On May 26, 1935, he married Leah Yoder at rural Inman. She died Jan. 5, 2003.

Survivors include: three sons, Loren, Salina, Stan, Enid, Okla., and Randall, Hesston; a daughter, Irene Schrock, Colorado Springs, Colo.; three sisters, Marjorie Cox, Albany, Ore., Vera Diener, Hydro, Okla., and Myrtle Stutzman, Hesston; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hesston Mennonite Church with the Rev. Cheryl Hershberger and Chaplain Beverly Baumgartner presiding. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, with the family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m., at Miller Funeral Home, Hesston. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Eastlawn Cemetery, near Hesston.

Memorials may be sent to Mennonite Mission Network and Mennonite Disaster Service, both in care of the funeral home.

Arthur Murl Brackeen
NEWTON - Arthur Murl Brackeen, 76, died Oct. 18, 2004, at his home in Newton.

He was born Sept. 30, 1928, at Van Zandt County, Texas, the son of William Thomas and Velma Annamae Jones Brackeen. He was ordained to the ministry on Sept. 30, 1955, in Newton.

On Jan. 22, 1945, he married Thelma Dooley at Gainsville, Texas. She died Feb. 27, 2002.

Survivors include: five sons, Chuck, Rose Hill, Daniel, and Herb, both of Wichita, and Stephen and Mike, both of Newton; two daughters, Ann Brackeen Schmidt and Donna Brackeen, both of Newton; and 15 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Buddy, a grandson, Richard W. Schmidt, three brothers, Jack, Joe, and Leroy, and a sister, Mary Dooley.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, Newton, with Pastor James Pauley presiding. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with the family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m., at Petersen Funeral Home, Newton.

Memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church or Central Homecare and Hospice, both of Newton and both in care of the funeral home.

Kathryn W. Zimmerman
WHITEWATER - Kathryn W. Zimmerman, 86, died Oct. 18, 2004.

Survivors include: sons, Richard, Valley Center, and Tom, Chardon, Ohio; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Lamb Funeral Home, Whitewater. Visitation with the family will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson.

Ernest N. Waters
ST. JOHN - Ernest N. Waters, 76, died Oct. 18, 2004, at his home.

He was born Nov. 8, 1927, in rural St. John, the son of Harry J. and Cora Helen Long Waters. He graduated from St. John High School in 1946 and attended Kansas State University. A lifetime Stafford County resident, he was a farmer and stockman.

He belonged to Masonic Lodge, St. John. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War.

On July 12, 1953, he married Alice Marie Reese at Wichita. She survives.

Other survivors include: a daughter, Diane Getty, St. John; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Eric Reese Waters and Ray Nathan Waters; and a sister, Harriet McAnally.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Minnis Chapel, St. John, with Rod Lyons presiding. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. Burial will be in Fairview Park Cemetery, St. John.

Memorials may be sent to Masonic Lodge No. 254, St. John, in care of the chapel.

Fred Swisher Jr.
PRATT - Fred Swisher Jr., 85, died Oct. 22, 2004, at his home, Pratt.

He was born June 22, 1919, at Pratt County, the son of Fred Swisher and Carrie Rhea Swisher Henderson. An 85-year resident of Pratt County, he retired as a self-employed pumper.

He belonged to Elks Lodge and First Christian Church, both at Pratt, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Pearl Harbor Survivors' Club.

He served as Bosun Mate 1st Class in the U.S. Navy at Pearl Harbor during World War II.

On Aug. 10, 1943, he married Patricia Logue at Boston. She survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Phil, Pratt; two daughters, Jan Arnold, Benicia, Calif., and Gail Tackett, Foster City, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn M. Swisher.

Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Larrison Mortuary, Pratt, with Pastor Rhonda Glenn presiding and military honors conducted by the U.S. Navy. Friends may sign register book from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the mortuary. Private family inurnment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Pratt.

Memorials may be sent to a charitable organization of the donor's choice in care of the mortuary.

Charles E. Koehn Sr.
NEWTON - Charles E. Koehn Sr., longtime president of Koehn and Associates, Inc., died Oct. 22, 2004, at his home, Newton.

He was born Feb. 13, 1930, at Seattle, the son of Robert Cecil and Lucille Marie Farwell Koehn. He graduated from Dyersburg, Tenn., High School in 1948, University of Illinois in 1953, with a degree in Architectural Engineering, continuing to graduate school. A Newton resident since 1956, he served two years as an officer in the U. S. Air Force.

He received Distinguished Service Awards from both Newton and State Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was president of Inryco Builders National Dealers Advisory Council, president of Associated General Contractors of Kansas, president of Newton Area Chamber of Commerce, lifetime National Director of Associated General Contractors of America, Senior Warden, Junior Warden, treasurer and founder of Operational Endowment Fund at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church. He started Newton Area Jobs Development Council and Harvey Counters Builders Association. He was a member of Hesston College President's Advisory Council, and he was named Newton Area Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 1999. He was an avid golfer and follower of his grandchildren's activities.

On Oct. 21, 1952, he married Susan Goering at Newton. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include: two sons, Charles Jr., Newton, and Matthew and wife Amy, Indianapolis; a daughter, Karen Barnhart and husband Scott, Hesston; a brother, Dr. Robert Koehn, Clarksville, Tenn.; and five grandchildren.

Memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Bob Layne presiding. Private graveside service will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the Operational Endowment Fund of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in care of Petersen Funeral Home, Newton.

Maynard D. Oliverius
WICHITA - Maynard Dane Oliverius, 76, died Oct. 24, 2004, at his home, Wichita.

He was born Nov. 30, 1927, at Galatia. A resident of Wichita since 1962, moving from Galatia, he was a heavy machinery operator for Eby Construction, Wichita.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

In 1961, he married Patricia Smith at Wichita. She died in 1976. In 1978, he married Esther at Wichita. She died in 1985.

Survivors include: three daughters; and four grandchildren.

Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Fairview Cemetery, Galatia, with the Rev. Wayne Flanders presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington.

Memorials may be sent to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in care of the funeral home.

Elsie A. Johnson
Elsie A. Johnson, 101, died Oct. 23, 2004, at Hester Care Center, Wesley Towers, Hutchinson.

She was born Feb. 22, 1903, at New Ulm, Minn., the daughter of Joseph and Louise Hallich Brown. A longtime Hutchinson resident, she was a homemaker.

She belonged to Emanuel Lutheran Church and Women's Evangelical Lutheran Church of America.

On Sept. 20, 1926, she married Stanley L. Johnson at Minneapolis, Minn. He died Aug. 10, 1960.

Survivors include: three sons and their wives, Dennis and Bonnie, Gary and Janice, all of Hutchinson, and Allan and Suzie, Lake Arrowhead, Calif.; three daughters and their husbands, Lorraine and Buel Robinson, Englewood, Colo., Shirley and Jack Fast, Hutchinson, and Karen Paulsen, Minneapolis, Minn.; 17 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and John Hern, two brothers and four sisters.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Emanuel Lutheran Church, Hutchinson, with Pastors Tim Carey and Loren Mai presiding. Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, both at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel's Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson.

Memorials may be sent to the church in care of the mortuary.

Beulah V. Reeves
DODGE CITY - Beulah V. Reeves, 96, died Oct. 23, 2004, at Trinity Manor, Dodge City.

She was born Aug. 1, 1908, at Lane County, the daughter of Luther and Cora Painter Bruner. A Dodge City resident, formerly of Beeler and Ness City, she was a farm wife.

She belonged to United Methodist Church, where she was a former Sunday School secretary, and she was a member of Thimble Club, WSCS and GG Club, all at Beeler.

In 1927, she married Guy Reeves Jr. in Lane County. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include: two sons, Morris, Dodge City, and Leon, WaKeeney; a daughter, Myrna Bidwell, Littleton, Colo.; a brother, Myron Bruner, Healy; a sister, Cornelia Thone, Healy; 17 grandchildren; and many great- and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Raymond; four brothers, Homer, Warren, Leo and Howard Bruner; and a sister, Neva Bathurst.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church, Beeler, with the Rev. David Randall presiding. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City. Burial will be in Beeler Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the church in care of the funeral home.
