Charles J. Lewellen
NEWTON - Charles Jacob Lewellen, 82, died Oct. 20, 2004, at Friendly Acres, Newton.
He was born Jan. 15, 1922, at Newton, the son of Charles Walter and Charlotte Bourne Lewellen. He was employed by St. Joseph Hospital as a medical technologist, retiring after 34 years in 1980.
He was a U.S. Army veteran. He belonged to Masonic Lodge No. 142, AF and AM, Newton; Rio Grande Chapter No. 4, Albuquerque, N.M.; Hiram Council No. 1; Pilgram Commandery No. 3; and was a 32nd Degree York Rite Mason and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He married
Lucille K. Prehal at Wichita. She preceded him in death.
Survivors include: a son, Phillip C., Houston, and a grandson.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Kathryn Dunlap.

Ray Sugars
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Ray Sugars, 90, died Oct. 18, 2004, at his home, Colorado Springs.
He was born Nov. 16, 1913, at Concordia, the son of Reuben and Ethel Shugar. He was taken in by Wesley and Albina Rundus and raised by Caroline, Jerry and Amos Rundus, Munden. A former Hutchinson resident, he farmed south of Chester, Neb., retiring in 1989.
On Dec. 25, 1936, he married
Vivian Oakley. She preceded him in death.
Survivors include: four sons, including James W. Sugars, Moundridge; two daughters; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Bachelor-Faulkner-Dart-Surber Memorial Chapel, Belleville, with Pastor Wayne Pittman presiding.

Effie L. Updegrove
LEWIS - Effie L. Updegrove, 95, died Oct. 21, 2004, at Medicalodge, Kinsley.
She was born May 3, 1909, at Fargo, Okla., the daughter of Alex A. and Maggie M. Farris Rohar. A longtime area resident, she was a homemaker.
She belonged to Pentecostal Church of Prayer, Kinsley.
On Oct. 2, 1928, she married
William G. Updegrove Sr. at Hutchinson. He died Oct. 19, 1975.
Survivors include: three sons, William, Lewis, Lawrence, Valparaiso, Ind., and Kenneth, Waskom, Texas; a daughter, Edith Van Dyke, Kinsley; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, six brothers and six sisters.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at McKillip Memorial Chapel, Kinsley, with the Rev. David Bell presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the chapel. Burial will be in Wayne Cemetery, Lewis.

Hazel I. Heglin
GATE, Okla. - Hazel Irene Heglin, 88, died Oct. 20, 2004, at Newman Memorial Hospital, Shattuck, Okla.
She was born April 28, 1916, on the family farm southeast of Knowles, Okla., the daughter of William Arthur and Laura Blanch Easton Priest. She was a homemaker.
She belonged to United Methodist Church, Gate, and served on the ZelmaCemeteryBoard.
On Feb. 5, 1934, she married
George "Bud" Heglin at Beaver, Okla. He died Jan. 31, 1990.
Survivors include: two sons, Robert Eugene and Dale Ray Heglin, both of Gate; a daughter, Lila Fern Curtis, Gate; 12 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Henry Olen Priest, and a grandson.
Funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at United Methodist Church, Gate, with the Rev. Wes Peterman presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Sunday, all at Myatt Funeral Home, Laverne. Burial will be in Gate Cemetery.

Sara Block
HESSTON - Sara "Sally" Block, 81, died Oct. 20, 2004, at Schowalter Villa, Hesston.
She was born May 16, 1923, at Lustre, Mont., the daughter of Jacob Martens and Sara Toews. A Hesston resident since 1998, moving from Newton, she was a homemaker.
She belonged to Hesston Mennonite Brethren Church.
On Dec. 19, 1941, she married
David D. Block at Dallas, Ore. He survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Jeffrey Block, Wichita; a daughter, Jacqueline Albright, Lubbock, Texas; a brother, Nick Martens, Dallas; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
Funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Hesston Mennonite Brethren Church, with the Rev. Steve Toews presiding. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at Miller Funeral Home, Hesston. Burial will be in EastlawnCemeterynear Hesston.

NORTH NEWTON - Charles C. "Charlie" Langston, 63, died Oct. 19, 2004, at his home, North Newton.
He was born March 11, 1941, at Conway Springs, the son of Leslie Leo and Mary Ellen Summers Langston. He worked as a general laborer for the aircraft and construction industries.
He was involved with the Foster Grandparent Program and Retired Senior Volunteers Program.
On April 1, 1982, he married
Dorothy A. Waite at Newton. She survives.
Other survivors include: a son, Leonadas Sidders, Newton; three sisters, Debi Rodgers, Tammy Rogers and JoVena Sortain, all of Newton; four brothers, Les, Clearwater, Jess and Robert, both of Haysville, and Dick Langston, Sedan; five sisters, Marion McCartney, Harper, Betty Gandy, Wellington, Marjorie Prosser and Donna Ables, both of Wichita, and Yvonne Evans, Belle Plaine; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Bill Evans; and a sister, Martha Burnett.
Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Eastlawn Cemetery, Newton, with Chaplain Karen Andres presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at Petersen Funeral Home, Newton.

Ernie Vanaman
GREAT BEND - Ernie "Bumper" Vanaman, 70, died Oct. 21, 2004, at Central Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend.
He was born April 2, 1934, at Otis, the son of Ernest E. and Julia Matel Vanaman. A lifetime Great Bend resident, he was the owner of Vanaman's Heating and Air Conditioning.
He was a former member of Fraternal Order of the Eagles.
On July 11, 1952, he married
Marian Davies at St. John. She died March 31, 1993. He married
Sue Wheeler. She survives at Great Bend.
Other survivors include: two sons, Marvin Thomas, Lamont, Okla., and Ernest Wayne Vanaman, Great Bend; a daughter, Diana McGinty, Great Bend; four brothers, Tony, Sarasota, Fla., Verrill, Ulysses, and Bob and Jimmy Vanaman, both of Springfield, Mo.; a sister, Jeanetta Kirkhardt, Iowa Park, Texas; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Vanaman; two brothers, D.O. and Gaerl Vanaman; and a sister, Julia "Toots" Shaklee.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend, with Pastor Darrell Grimm presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday, all at the funeral home. Interment will be in Pawnee Rock Cemetery, Pawnee Rock.

Walter Meier
HAYS - Walter Meier, 77, died Oct. 20, 2004, at Hays Medical Center.
He was born Feb. 15, 1927, on the family farm southwest of Hays, the son of Henry A. and Clara Pfannenstiel Meier. He was a farmer and also had worked construction for KR Hinkhouse Construction.
He belonged to St. Joseph Catholic Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a former member of the Pleasant Hill School Board. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
On June 19, 1950, he married
Henrietta Marie Seltz at Hays. She survives.
Other survivors include: five daughters, Linda Donlay and Mary Meier, both of Hays, Annette Sosa, Hugoton, Rosanne Dougherty, Colby, and Karen Dechant, Aurora, Ohio; two brothers, Milton and Ernie Meier, both of Hays; six sisters, Tina Ross, Gladys Moore and Rosie Schmidt, all of Hays, Louise Staab, Catherine, and Berdy Herrman and Loeta Legleiter, both of Great Bend; 10 grandchildren; a stepgrandson; and two stepgreat-granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Ralph Meier.
Parish vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, Hays. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to service time Saturday, all at the funeral home. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
