Ruth A. Callon
MOUNT HOPE - Ruth A. Callon, 84, died Nov. 9, 2004, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.
She was born Aug. 24, 1920, at El Dorado, the daughter of George and Eva Schmidtz Golden. She was a retired CNA.
On Nov. 23, 1936, she married
Cecil "Bill" Callon at El Dorado. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include: three sons, Brent, Garden City, Bob, Greensboro, N.C., and Jim, Bellflower, Calif.; four daughters, Patricia Richardson, Haven, Louella Faulkner, Alvarado, Texas, Anita Geiger, Pewaukee, Wis., and Janet Steiner, Sackville, Wis.; 24 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Richard and Duane Callon.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, at Wulf-Ast Mortuary Chapel, Mount Hope, with Pastor Daniel Ensz presiding. Visitation is from noon to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 5 to 9 p.m., at the mortuary. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
LaWanda D. Banman
GOESSEL - LaWanda D. Banman, 80, died Nov. 11, 2004, at Bethesda Home.
She was born May 13, 1924, at Newton, the daughter of Jacob S. Goertzen and Pauline Unruh. She lived in the Goessel area until 1947, when she moved to Lehigh. She moved to Goessel in 2001. She was a homemaker.
She belonged to Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church.
On Sept. 9, 1947, she married
W. Earl Banman at Goessel. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include: a son, Alvin, Lehigh; a daughter, Connie Bullinger, Canton; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Ernest.
Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, at Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church, near Goessel, with the Revs. Lee Suderman and Mark Wiens presiding. There will be no visitation. Private burial service will be in Alexanderwohl Cemetery.

Edna E. Leslie
LIBERAL - Edna E. Leslie, 87, died Nov. 6, 2004, at Liberal Good Samaritan Center.
She was born Oct. 1, 1917, at Madoc, the daughter of Edward C. and Elva Mae Stutzman Douglass. A longtime Scott City resident, she worked in housekeeping. Following retirement, she moved to Liberal in 1982.
She belonged to Veterans of Foreign wars Auxiliary, Scott City.
In 1944, she married
Earl P. Leslie at Scott City. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include: a daughter, Rendea Kah Frydendall, Liberal; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
Memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Liberal Good Samaritan Center.

Evan I. Harrod
SYRACUSE - Evan Isaac Harrod, infant son of Jacob Isaac and Rebecca Lee Mapes Harrod, died Nov. 10, 2004, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital, Ulysses.
Survivors include: his father, Fort Benning, Ga.; his mother, Syracuse; two grandmothers, Karla Sue Schmidt Villondo, Garden City, and Susan Lynn Mapes, Syracuse; an uncle, William Mapes, Lamar, Colo.; and many other relatives.
He was preceded in death by a grandfather, Darrel Dean Harrod Jr.; a great-grandfather, George Ernest Mapes; and a great-uncle, Paul Eugene Mapes.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. (MST) Saturday at Wesleyan Church, Syracuse. Burial will follow in Syracuse Cemetery.

Carlton H. Gates
NEWTON - Carlton H. Gates, 87, died Nov. 10, 2004, at Friendly Acres Retirement Community, Newton.
He was born Dec. 7, 1916, in Harvey County, the son of Ralph and Grace VanHouten Gates. He was a road crew foreman for Harvey County, retiring in 1979.
He belonged to First Baptist Church, Newton, Newton Lodge No. 142 AF and AM, Order of the Eastern Star Newton Chapter No. 5, Newton Commandery No. 9, Royal Arch Chapter No. 27 and Scottish Rite 32 degree, Wichita.
On March 3, 1968, he married
Lila Brenneman at Newton. She survives.
He also is survived by a sister, Elnora Baxter, Newton.
He was preceded in death by a son, Larry Gates, and a brother, Paul Gates.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Petersen Funeral Home Chapel, Newton, with Pastor Timothy Conner presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, all at the funeral home. An Order of the Eastern Star service will take place at the chapel after the funeral. Burial with Masonic Committal will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Newton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hospice Care of Kansas, American Cancer Society or American Heart Association, all in care of the funeral home.
Mildred F. Bateman
ATTICA - Mildred Faye Bateman, 78, died Nov. 11, 2004, at Wichita.
She was born Feb. 23, 1926, at Attica, the daughter of Ray and Stella Harrel Trotter. She was a former bookkeeper for Trotter's Grocery, Attica, and Attica District Hospital.
She belonged to United Methodist Church.
On Aug. 6, 1944, she married
Donald Bateman at Attica. He survives.
Other survivors include: two daughters, Karen Lear, Hutchison, and Cathy Becker, Temple, Texas; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Glenn and Vernon; and a sister, Betty.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at United Methodist Church, Attica. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Prairie Rose Funeral Home, Anthony. Interment will be in Attica Cemetery.

Frieda Lofland
LIBERAL - Frieda Lofland, 96, died Nov. 10, 2004, at her home, rural Seward County.
She was born Jan. 11, 1908, at The Grove, Texas, the daughter of August J. and Mienna Huebner Winkler. She attended Green Valley School near Liberal. She was a farmer, rancher and raised cattle.
She belonged to Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Dorcus Society and the Blue Belle Home Extension Unit and had served on the Fargo Township Election Board for years.
On Dec. 31, 1932, she married
Arthur L. Lofland at Garden City. He died Nov. 15, 1943.
Survivors include: a son, Udell Lofland, Liberal; two daughters, Harriett Arnett, Liberal, and Myrna Smith, Manhattan; a brother, Martin Winkler, Tyrone, Okla.; nine grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by a daughter; four brothers; a sister; three grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Andrew Wehling presiding. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at Miller Mortuary, Liberal.

Vondell D. Lewis
ELKHART - Vondell Dwayne Lewis, 72, died Nov. 11, 2004, at Morton County Hospital, Elkhart.
He was born Aug. 11, 1932, at Elk City, Okla., the son of Adrian Orby and Myrtle Mae Lindsey Lewis. He was the owner and manager of Elkhart Locker.
He was a former member of Odd Fellows Lodge, Johnson, and served on both the Girl Scout and Boy Scout councils.
On Dec. 24, 1951, he married
Oretha May Ayres at Borger, Texas. She survives.
Other survivors include: two sons, Randy and Terry Lewis, both of Elkhart; a daughter, Ralene Powell, Elkhart; two brothers, Lowell Dean, Pampa, Texas, and Adrien Thurman Lewis, Mena, Ark.; a sister, Jennie Lou Gibson, Stinett, Texas; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Eddie Reece Lewis.
Funeral will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel, Elkhart, with the Rev. Gary Irvin presiding. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Elkhart Cemetery.

GARDEN CITY - Andres Espino, infant son of Jesus and Maria Hernandez Espino, died Nov. 10, 2004, at Children's Mercy Hospital, Kansas City, Mo.
He was born Sept. 26, 2004, at Garden City.
He is survived by his parents and a sister, Deisy A. Espino, of the home.
Vigil service will be at 8 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the church, with Father James E. Baker presiding. Interment will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
