Zora E. Williams
COLDWATER - Zora E. Williams, 92, died Nov. 10, 2004, at Comanche County Hospital, Coldwater.

She was born Dec. 2, 1911, at Evansville, the daughter of Cornelius V. and Elizabeth Ellen Alley White. A lifetime Comanche County area resident, she was a farm wife and homemaker. She also was a nurse's aide at Comanche County Hospital.

She belonged to South Central Southern Baptist Church, Coldwater, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, E.H.U., Comanche County Farm Bureau and Christian Quilting Club.

In November 1929, she married Merrill Pepperd at Coldwater. She later married Riley W. Ford in October 1940 at Pratt. He died in 1964. In August 1970, she married C.A. Williams at Buffalo, Okla. He died in 1986.

Survivors include: a son, Dwight Pepperd, Coldwater; two daughters, Margaret L. Greene, St. Louis, and Myrna G. Bumgarner, Coldwater; two stepsons, J.R. Williams, Coldwater, and Robert G. Williams, Caw City, Okla.; two stepdaughters, Wanda Taylor, Douglas, and Neomia Goebel, Isabel; a brother, Robert L. White, Pratt; two sisters, Hazel Renard, Farmington, N.M., and Alma Haas, Osawatomie; 24 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Juanita Searle, and two brothers, Vernie and Victor White.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hatfield-Prusa Funeral Home, Coldwater, with Brother Ken Pitzer presiding. Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery, Coldwater.

Memorials may be sent to Pioneer Lodge or a charity of the donor's choice, both in care of the funeral home.

Harry E. Smith
DIGHTON - Harry Edmund Smith, 81, died Nov. 10, 2004, at Hays Medical Center.

He was born June 30, 1923, at Sterling, the son of William Thomas and Lola Belle Thirlwell Smith. He graduated from high school at Dighton in 1941 and attended the University of Kansas for two years. He was a longtime self-employed building contractor at Dighton, where he built many homes. He also served as the Dighton city manager for a year.

He belonged to First Christian Church, Dighton, was a former member of the church board, a former Dighton School Board member and was a member of Sunflower Polka Club, American Legion Post No. 190 and Moose Lodge, Dodge City. He served in the U.S. Navy. He was a plank owner of the USS St. Paul, where he served as a fire control officer. He received the award from the Lane County Chamber of Commerce for being the first Lane County military member to arrive in Tokyo.

On June 20, 1948, he married Rogene Gisick at Dighton. She survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Larry Smith, Colorado Springs, Colo.; two daughters, Mickie Caskey, Chipita Park, Colo., and Charmene Kandt, Hays; three brothers, Richard and Bill, both of Overland Park, and Gene Smith, Bonita Springs, Fla.; two sisters, Dorothy Jones, Little Silver, N.J., and Phyllis McWhirter, Victoria; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, Dighton, with the Rev. Howard Bever presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by American Legion Post No. 190.

Memorials may be sent to the church or Fort Hays State University Stroke Wellness Center, both in care of the funeral home.

Edward Schield
LIBERAL - Edward Schield, 65, died Nov. 9, 2004, at Southwest Medical Center, Liberal.

He was born Dec. 9, 1938, at Plains, the son of Pete and Ruby Hoskinson Schield. He grew up in the Plains community and attended Plains schools. A Liberal resident since 1982, he drove transport for Groendyke Transport Inc. for 23 years, retiring in 2000. He belonged to St. Patrick Catholic Church, Plains.

On Feb. 8, 1957, he married Shirley J. Pierson at Plains. She died Aug. 7, 1998.

Survivors include: a son, Leroy Schield, Clovis, N.M.; a daughter, Leslie Hicks, Hitchcock, Okla.; a brother, Carl Schield, Greensburg; a sister, Dorothy Hardaway, Meade; a foster sister, Phyllis Gearhart, Turpin, Okla.; three grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Plains Cemetery, with the Rev. Stanley Lehnert presiding.

Memorials may be sent to American Cancer Society or Kansas Lung Association, both in care of Miller Mortuary, Liberal.

Orval C. Wagner
McPHERSON - Orval C. Wagner, 97, died Nov. 11, 2004, at Cedars Health Care Center, McPherson.

He was born Sept. 24, 1907, in rural Waldo, the son of Franklin Abraham and Mary Altena Bradshaw Wagner. He graduated from Covert High School. A McPherson resident since 1950, he worked as an administrator at Cedars Health Care Center, McPherson, for 18 years. He also was a farmer and owned and operated Wagner Merchantile Store, Covert.

He belonged to Church of the Brethren, McPherson, where he was a lifetime deacon. He served as chaplin of the Camplighter's and Sunchaser's Camping clubs, was a lifetime member of Kansas State Historical Society, a charter member of the McPherson County Historical Society and had served as vice president on two occasions and as treasurer for several years for the Kansas State Association for the Home of the Aging.

On June 16, 1931, he married Florence Marie Williams at Goodland. She survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Irvin LeRoy, Norman, Okla.; a daughter, Velva Marie Butler, Grundy Center, Iowa; a brother, Harold Wagner, Platteville, Wis.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Marvin and Paul Wagner, and four sisters, Ruby Gordon, Nellie McDaneld, Una Wagner and Lucille Gordon.

Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Glidden-Ediger Funeral Home Chapel, McPherson, with the Rev. Chris Whitacre presiding. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, with the family present from 4 to 6 p.m., at the chapel. Graveside service will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday in the Mausoleum Building in McPherson Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hospice Care of Kansas, McPherson Church of the Brethren, McPherson College Scholarship Fund or the Cedars Health Care Center, all in care of the funeral home.

Donald R. Sample
GREAT BEND - Donald Ray "Don" Sample, 61, died Nov. 10, 2004, at his home.

He was born April 29, 1943, at Hastings, Neb., the son of Kenneth Merle and Helen Elizabeth Bachman Sample. A Great Bend resident for 38 years, moving from Hastings, he was a truck driver and mechanic for Concrete Services Inc.

He was of the Methodist faith. He belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3111. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include: a son, Donald G. Sample, Great Bend; two brothers, Roger, Wichita, and Kenneth Sample, Pueblo, Colo.; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Ronnie Sample; and a sister, Sharon Schleichardt.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend, with the Rev. Don Paden presiding. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Hoisington Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to Great Bend Fireman's Social and Charity, in care of the funeral home.

Shirley M. Smith
MARION - Shirley M. Smith, 69, died Feb. 6, 2004, at St. Luke Hospital, Marion.

She was born Feb. 24, 1934, at Hillsboro, the daughter of Charles Roy and Frieda Rittgers Smith. A resident of Marion, she worked as a homemaker.

She belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Marion.

On Nov. 4, 1951, she married Robert E. Smith at Hillsboro. He survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Terry, Sterling, Va.; two brothers, Harold L., Independence, Mo., and Charles K., Wichita; a half sister, Leona Harrell, Sautee, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Don Smith.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Zeiner Funeral Home, Marion, with the Rev. Larry Timm presiding. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Marion Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the St. Luke Living Center or Marion High School Athletic Department, both in care of the funeral home.

Phyllis B. Roach
ANTHONY - Phyllis B. Roach, 86, died Feb. 6, 2004, at Olathe.

She was born May 7, 1917, in Harper County, the daughter of F. McKinley and Sarah Cary Burchfiel. A resident of Anthony, she was a telephone operator and clerk at M'Lady's and Duckwalls.

She belonged to United Methodist Church and was a charter member of Socias Club, both at Anthony.

In 1937, she married Robert E. Stark at Kingman. He died Aug. 21, 1986. She married Herschel M. Roach in 1990 at Anthony. He died June 3, 1995.

Survivors include: two daughters, Deanna Gehlbach, Olathe, and Sue McKee, Wamego; a sister, Burchie Kastens, Wichita; three grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, Anthony, with the Rev. Nathan Stanton presiding. Burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery, Anthony.

Memorials may be sent to Anthony Friendship Meals, Anthony United Methodist Church and Anthony Library, all in care of the funeral home.

Aldean Mark
HARPER - Aldean Mark, 76, died Feb. 7, 2004, at Attica Long Term Care Facility, Attica.

She was born Oct. 12, 1927, in Harper County, the daughter of George L. and Goldie Kiser Hacker. A resident of Harper, she retired as a cook at Harper Rest Home.

On July 9, 1943, she married Erven Mark at Anthony. He died Feb. 15, 1979.

Survivors include: three sons, Erven Lee and Ronald, both of Harper, and Rickie, Attica; a daughter, Rogena Grisby, Attica; three brothers, Bill and Clifford Hacker and Gary Coffey, all of Harper; a sister, Lavota Loper, Wichita; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Elliott Funeral Home Chapel, Harper, with the Rev. Harry Betts presiding. Burial will be in Cleveland Cemetery, Cleveland.

Memorials may be sent to Attica Long Term Care Facility, in care of the funeral home.

Alex Jelinek
GARDEN CITY - Alex Jelinek, 3, died Feb. 5, 2004, at St. Catherine Hospital, Garden City.

He was born Sept. 18, 2000, at Ulysses, the son of Alejandro Medrano and Melinda Jelinek. He lived in Ulysses for the first two years of his life and then he moved to Garden City.

Survivors include: his mother, of the home; his father, Ulysses; two brothers, Alan and Abian, both of the home; grandparents, Josefine Frausto, Garden City, and Kenneth Jelinek, Schuyler, Neb.; and great-grandparents, Jesus and Josefina Martinez, Eagle Pass, Texas.

Rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with Father James E. Baker presiding. Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Memorials may be sent to the Alex Jelinek Memorial Fund, in care of the funeral home.
