Woodrow Wilson 'Woody' Graber
ZENDA - Woodrow Wilson "Woody" Graber, 91, died July 10, 2004, at Kingman Community Hospital.

He was born March 4, 1913, at Ordway, Colo., the son of Daniel P. and Carolina Flickinger Graber. A resident of the Zenda community most of his life, he was the co-owner and operator of the Zenda Telephone Company.

He belonged to the Zenda United Methodist Church, the Nashville-Zenda Lions Club, the Harper A.F.&A.M., was a former Zenda city councilman, former Zenda school board member and served on the Zenda Fire Department. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

On March 8, 1941, he married Beulah McClellan at Oklahoma City. She survives.

Other survivors include: a son, Tim and his wife Sheila, Santee, Calif.; a daughter, Ruth Ann Vanlandingham and her husband Jerry, Zenda; five grandchildren, Moira Vanlandingham, Roger Vanlandingham, Lisa Lilja, Brian Graber and Kevin Graber; and four great-grandchildren, Lauren and Sarah Vanlandingham and Carl and Margaret Lilja.

He was preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters.

Graveside service will be at 4 p.m. Monday in Nichols Cemetery, Zenda, with Pastor Mike McGovney and the Rev. Harry Betts presiding. Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. today at Livingston Funeral Home, Kingman.

Memorials may be sent to Zenda Emergency Medical Services and Kingman Community Hospital, both in care of the funeral home.

Margery Suttle Hays
LYONS - Margery Suttle Hays, 89, died July 9, 2004, at Wichita.

She was born July 11, 1914, at Kingman, the daughter of William A. and Cardelia M. Hahn Lewis. A longtime Lyons resident, she was a beauty operator and owned Beauty Garden, Lyons.

She belonged to First Christian Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, both at Lyons, and the Golden Belt Hairdressers Association.

On Aug. 16, 1946, she married Harold E. Suttle at Sterling. He died Nov. 5, 1983. On June 4, 1988, she married A.J. Hays at Lyons. He died June 28, 1998.

Survivors include: a son, Roger Suttle, Florida; a daughter, Donna Phillips, Wichita; a stepson, Bob Freeman, Oklahoma; a sister, Loretta Swingle, Zenda; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Suttle.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sillin Funeral Home, Lyons, with the Rev. Tom Eastman presiding. Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lyons Municipal Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the church, in care of the funeral home.

John M. Day
GREENSBURG - John M. Day, 56, died July 8, 2004, in rural Kiowa County as the result of a vehicle accident. He was born March 13, 1948, in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Jack Merlin and Bonnie Esther Carlson Day. He lived in Topeka, Kansas City, Missouri, Yates Center, Oakley and Greensburg.

He graduated from Topeka High School in 1966 and was a graduate of Washburn University. He was a Certified Public Accountant.

He was a member of the Lions Club and Chamber of Commerce, both at Greensburg, National Society of C.P.A.'s, and the Kansas Meat Goat Association.

On June 11, 1976, he married Darlene Nolen in Miami, Oklahoma. She survives.

Other survivors include one son, Scott Day, Greensburg; one daughter, Nicole Horning and husband Abram, of St. Joseph, Missouri; one brother, Mike Day and wife Dana, of Yates Center; five sisters, Kathy Day, of Topeka, Sheila Musil and husband Doug, of Eskridge, Kansas, Terry Black and husband Buster, Sue Vernon and husband Jim, and Becky Green, all of Yates Center.

He was preceded in death by his mother on December 25, 1991.

Memorial services will be held Monday, July 12, at 3:00 p.m. at Penwell Gabel Funeral Home Midtown Chapel of Topeka, Kansas. Inurnment will follow at Topeka Cemetery.

Memorial services will also be held at the Faith Tabernacle in Greensburg, Kansas, on July 14, 2004, at 10:00 a.m., with the Rev. Willard Olinger presiding.

Memorials are suggested to the Arthritis Foundation, Kansas Chapter, in care of Fleener Funeral Home, P.O. Box 763, Greensburg, Kansas, 67054.

Ursula Dechant
HAYS - Ursula Dechant, 100, died July 9, 2004, at Hays Medical Center.

She was born Sept. 9, 1903, at Liebenthal, the daughter of Christian and Rosa Miller Legleiter. A Hays resident, she was a homemaker.

She belonged to Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hays, and St. Ann's Altar Society, Liebenthal.

On June 9, 1925, she married Cornel J. Dechant at Antonino. He died June 12, 1984.

Survivors include: three sons, Emerald and Harry, both of Hays, and Virgil, Leawood; six daughters, Bernice Schaffer, Hays, Peggy Norris, Russell, Delores Dechant, Salina, and Rosie Giesick, Carol Werth and Jeanette Gabel, all of WaKeeney; 48 grandchildren; 99 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, LaVerne and Donald; a daughter, Mary Ann Meder; four brothers, Joe, Frank, Anton and John Legleiter; six sisters, Mary Herrman, Katie Werth, Rosalia Herrman, Veronica Herrman, Clara Herrman and Agnes Ruder; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Parish vigil will be at 7 p.m. today at Brock's North Hill Chapel, Hays. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hays. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Monday at the funeral chapel. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Hays.

Memorials may be sent to Immaculate Heart of Mary Building Fund, Hays, or St. Joseph's Heritage Fund, Liebenthal, both in care of the funeral home.

John E. Carlson Sr.
DODGE CITY - John E. Carlson Sr., 91, died July 9, 2004, at Shepherd's Center, Cimarron.

He was born Sept. 7, 1912, at Rozel, the son of Andy and Clara Polson Carlson. He was a farmer in Hodgeman and Ford counties.

On March 23, 1940, he married Pauline Preston at Syracuse. She died Nov. 20, 1990.

Survivors include: two sons, Melvin, Dodge City, and John E. Jr., Larned; a brother, Nelson, Tecumseh; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Lynn Carlson; and seven brothers and sisters.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City, with the Rev. Charles W. Preston presiding. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Garfield Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the Shepherd's Center, in care of the funeral home.

Jeanne Powell
Jeanne Powell, 79, of Hutchinson, died July 10, 2004, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

She was born March 29, 1925, at Delia, the daughter of Walter and Edith Benander Bradley. She graduated from Goff, Kan., High School and attended nursing training at Atchison. A Hutchinson resident since 1948, she was a registered nurse, a homemaker and worked for Hutchinson Floral, The Ivy Garden and the Flower & Gift Gallery.

On Dec. 21, 1947, she married Jack L. Powell at Atchison. He died March 17, 1984.

Survivors include: two sons, Steve and his wife Chris, South Hutchinson, and Jon, Hutchinson; two daughters, Sue Seybert and Debi Wilson and her husband Tom, all of Hutchinson; a brother, Raymond Bradley, Goff; a sister, June Johnson, Blue Eye, Mo.; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Ret. Lt. Col. Charles W. Bradley.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, Hutchinson. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, both at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson.

Memorials may be sent to Hospice of Reno County or the Jeanne Powell Nursing Scholarship Fund, in care of the Hutchinson Community College Endowment Association.

Marie Mall
ELLINWOOD - Marie Mall, 89, died July 9, 2004, at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood.

She was born May 23, 1915, at Madison, the daughter of Fredrick Clarence and Jeanette Allen Crotchett Austin. A longtime Ellinwood resident, she was a homemaker.

She belonged to the United Methodist Church and Rebecca Lodge, both at Ellinwood, Eastern Star No. 487 of Claflin, the Heritage Club, and was a volunteer worker at Ellinwood Thrift Shop.

On Feb. 23, 1935, she married Clyde David Walford at Eureka. He died April 26, 1971. On July 7, 1976, she married Clarence M. Mall at Tescott. He died Nov. 3, 1987.

Survivors include: a son, Donald Dee Walford, Owasso, Okla.; a daughter, Patricia Irene Schartz, Ellinwood; a stepdaughter, Lucille Reeder, Wichita; a sister, Helen Erwin, Wichita; two stepsons, Orville Mall, Seattle, and Roy Mall, McAllen, Texas; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Kimple Funeral Chapel, Ellinwood, with the Rev. Vernon Maelzer presiding. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Great Bend.

Memorials may be sent to the Ellinwood Ambulance Fund or Woodhaven Care Center, both in care of the funeral home.

Vera Jean Poteet
KINGMAN - Vera Jean Poteet, 88, died July 10, 2004, at Kingman Community Hospital.

She was born March 6, 1916, in Kingman County, the daughter of Richard and Belle Eppley Wallace. A lifetime resident of the Kingman and Penalosa communities, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Kingman Country Club, both at Kingman, the Penalosa Sewing Club, and was a former member of the Flying Farmers.

On July 19, 1936, she married Delmer H. "Bill" Poteet at Great Bend. He died April 30, 1996.

Survivors include: four daughters, Betty Jean McFadden, Rogers, Ark., Nadene Stucky, Hot Springs Village, Ark., Judy Buckbee, Warwick, N.Y., and Billie Milford, Kingman; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Eldon, Lester and Robert; and two sisters, Wanda Wallace and Georgia Fettig.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Livingston Funeral Home, Kingman, with the Rev. John Schmitt presiding. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today and Monday, and the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, all at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lerado Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the church, in care of the funeral home.
