Obituary: Edna M. Nelson, 90, Manhattan, KS passed away Tuesday, September 7, 2004 in the Via Christi-St. Francis Medical Center, Wichita.
She was born February 14, 1914 at Audubon, IA, the daughter of Richard Ellis Carley and Cecil Adell Denney Carley. In 1921, at the age of 7, she moved with her family to the Manhattan area. She attended the local schools and had been a Manhattan resident since that time.
She was united in marriage to Marvin F. Nelson on November 15, 1935 at Salina, KS. He preceded her in death on July 9, 1987.
Mrs. Nelson worked as a clerk for the local Sears & Roebuck Store for over 20 years, retiring in 1976.
She was an active member of the First Lutheran Church, Manhattan, where she taught Sunday School and served as President of the WELCA. She was also a member of the Fort Knightly Club and Christian Women United.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Nelson was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Laurette Abt.
Survivors include a son, Wayne R. Nelson, and wife, Sandy, Ben Wheeler, TX; three daughters, Tanya Marie Wood, and husband, Gary, Rancho Mirage, CA, Cynthia Ann Colson, and husband, Richard, Randolph, KS and Nancy K. Smolinski, and husband, Don, North Tonawanda, NY; three sisters, May Spear, Lyons, KS and Dorthea Niemoeller and Polly Williams, both of Manhattan; seven grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.
Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 11, 2004 in the First Lutheran Church, Manhattan with the Rev. Dr. Keith E. Wiens officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, southeast of Manhattan.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the First Lutheran Church and left in care of the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan.

Obituary: Ileen M. Feldkamp, 82, Manhattan, KS passed away Wednesday, August 25, 2004 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.
She was born January 3, 1922 in Lower Brule County, SD, the daughter of William L. Schmitt and Muriel A. Pauley Schmitt. She spent her childhood years in South Dakota before moving to Manhattan at the age of 16. She was a 1939 graduate of Manhattan High School and later attended business classes at the Sacred Heart Academy, Manhattan.
She was united in marriage to Ralph E. Feldkamp on April 25, 1942 at Washington, D.C. He survives of the home.
Mrs. Feldkamp lived in Ft. Smith, AR for several years before returning to Manhattan in January 1950. She was a homemaker and worked, as a supervisor, in the Finance and Accounting Department at Ft. Riley, KS for over 20 years. She retired in 1978.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Manhattan. Other memberships included Magdala Temple No. 137, Daughters of the Nile, Salina (Past Queen); Social Order of the Beauceant, Concordia (Past President); Manhattan Chapter No. 209, O.E.S. (Past Worthy Matron); International Order of Jobs Daughters (Past Guardian and Past Grand Guardian); Harmony Rebekah Lodge No. 689, I.O.O. F. (Past Noble Grand); Ladies Encampment No. 36 Auxiliary, I.O.O.F.; Eagles Lodge No. 2468 Auxiliary (Past President); Delta Omega Chapter No. 1628 of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, (Past President); Pearce-Keller American Legion Post No. 17 Auxiliary (Past President); Lee Pierson V.F.W. Post No. 1786 Auxiliary (Past President and Past President of District No. 4, Dept. of Kansas Ladies Auxiliary); Riverside Club; RSVP; and NARFE.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and one grandson, Alan Feldkamp.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Feldkamp is survived by two sons, Ronald E. Feldkamp, and his wife, Marilyn, Manhattan and Thomas A. Feldkamp, and his wife, Cathy, Surry, ME; two daughters, Carolyn S. Cloud-Diles, and her husband, Albert, Leslie, AR and Cindy M. McClellan, and her husband, Bo, Port Neches, TX; one brother, Lyle Schmitt, Kent, WA; eight grandchildren, Tami, Christopher and Valerie Feldkamp, Ryan and Matthew Cloud and Paul, John and Mark Pierce; and one great grandson, Isaac Cloud.
Funeral services, with Eastern Star committal services, will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 28, 2004 in the First Presbyterian Church, Manhattan with the Rev. R. C. “Cam” McConnell officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Cemetery, Manhattan.
Memorial contributions can be made to the St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital, the American Heart Association or the First Presbyterian Church Family Life Center and left in care of the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan.

Obituary: Steven Carlisle, 40, Wamego, KS passed away Monday, August 23, 2004, in a railroad accident, at Seneca, KS.
He was born June 26, 1964 at Littlefield, TX, the son of Tad Carlisle and Linda Sawyer Carlisle. He grew up in Littlefield and attended the local schools.
Mr. Carlisle worked in the construction industry and had been a recent resident of the Wamego area.
He is survived by his father and step mother, Tad and Margaret Carlisle, Wamego; two brothers, Wayne Carlisle, Austin, TX and William Carlisle, Amarillo, TX; a sister, Beva Kellison, McDade, TX; and a half sister, Sue Pearson, Dallas, TX.
He was preceded in death by his mother.
Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 28, 2004 in the University Christian Church, Manhattan with the Rev. David Pape officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Wabaunsee Cemetery, Wabaunsee, KS.

Obituary: Lester Roy “Dal” Dalrymple, 89, Manhattan, KS passed away Friday, August 13, 2004 at his home after an extended illness.
He was born in Washington, NJ on May 15, 1915, the son of Roy and Pearl (Brink) Dalrymple. He was the elder of two children.
Mr. Dalrymple graduated from the Washington (NJ) High School in 1933.
He married Esther Mae Wilson of Anthony, KS on March 6, 1945. She preceded him in death on February 2, 2004.
He served with the U.S. Army from 1942 until his retirement, as a lieutenant colonel, in 1962. While in the Army, he served in numerous locations including Japan, Italy and various stateside postings. Esther and Lester are both included in the WW II Memorial Registry.
Following his retirement from the service, he, his wife, Esther, and their six children moved to Manhattan.
Mr. Dalrymple and his wife were residents of Manhattan for over forty years; both were very active in community service and were avid KSU fans.
He was a member of the First Christian Church, where he served as deacon and as an elder. He was a member of the American Legion, Elks Lodge, Shrine Club and Tin Lizzie Group, Lions, RSVP, Kaw Valley Rodeo Association Board of Directors and KSU Foundation President’s Club. He was a driver for the Lions Club Eye Bank.
Mr. and Mrs. Dalrymple were founding members of the Federation for Handicapped Children, that was the predecessor of Big Lakes Developmental Center. He served on the Board of Big Lakes Developmental Center.
Survivors include four daughters and two sons: Kathleen Jones and her husband, David, Enterprise, KS; Michael Dalrymple and his wife, Linda, Ft. Collins, CO; Sharon McCaffrey and her husband, Michael, Wamego; Carol Klataske and her husband, Ron, Manhattan; Daniela Dalrymple, Springfield, MO; Lee Dalrymple, Manhattan; 16 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.
A Celebration of Life to honor both Esther and Lester will be at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, August 22, 2004 in the First Christian Church, Manhattan with the Rev. Neil Engle officiating. Inurnment, with full military honors, will follow in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, southeast of Manhattan.

Obituary: Sharon L. Cargal, 55, Manhattan, KS passed away Tuesday, August 10, 2004 in her home after an extended illness.
She was born June 11, 1949 at St. Louis, MO, the daughter of Edward and Betty Fletcher. She grew up in St. Louis, attending the local schools, and was a graduate of the Mercy Catholic High School.
She was united in marriage to Larry Cargal on August 15, 1969 at St. Louis. He survives of the home.
Mrs. Cargal lived in numerous locations while following her husband in his military career and had been a resident of Manhattan since 1993. She was a homemaker and had worked several years as a clerk at the Family Dollar Store. She was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Manhattan.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Cargal is survived by a son, Larry S. Cargal, Manhattan; two daughters, Shannon Rossignoll, Wilmer, AL and Shawn Cargal, Manhattan; her mother, Betty Martin, St. Charles, MO; a brother, Edward “Lowell” Fletcher, St. Louis, MO; a sister, Kamille , St. Charles, MO; and five grandchildren, Jonathan Cargal, Ian Hart and Ashley, Samantha and Christopher Rossignoll.
Mrs. Cargal donated her body to the K.U. Medical Center, Kansas City for medical research. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Monday, August 16, 2004 in the Seven Dolors Catholic

Obituary: Raymond J. Ekart, 65, Manhattan, KS passed away Monday, July 26, 2004 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.
He was born December 29, 1938 on the family farm near Flush, KS, the fifth of seven children born to Clarence L. and Genevieve M. Umscheid Ekart. At the age of 5, the family moved to Manhattan to the site of the present family home. He attended the Manhattan Catholic Schools and graduated from Luckey High School in 1958. While in high school, he was a 3-year letterman in football and basketball and helped Luckey High attend their first State Basketball tournament. After high school, he attended KSU for one semester and then went to work as a truck driver/laborer for Griffith Lumber Company. He learned the business well and in two years was promoted to an office/sales position which he held until 1965.
In 1961, Mr. Ekart was called to active duty during the Bay of Pigs Operation. He spent time at Ft. Riley, KS and also 9 months at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland, where he worked on rebuilding jeeps, semi trucks and tanks.
In 1965 he was named manager of the Foster Lumber Company in Lyons, KS. While living in Lyons, he met his future wife, Patricia Ann Miller.
In 1967, he became manager of the Wildcat Lumber Company, Manhattan, a position he held for 14 years. During this time they furnished materials for many of the fine homes and beautiful new buildings at K-State.
On July 22, 1967, Raymond and Patricia Miller were united in marriage at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Manhattan. Of that union became two beautiful children, Timothy R. Ekart and Marette R. Ekart.
In 1981, Mr. Ekart resigned as manager and with a partner opened the Paint & Frame Shoppe on North Third Street. They owned and operated the business until they were displaced by the Manhattan Towne Center. In 1986, he went back to work as assistant manager of Griffith Lumber Company until 1994. He then went to work for Cash Lumber for five years. He started the Cash Lumber Annual Christmas Chili Feed, where he made 40-50 gallons of chili for the event and served between 250-400 people. A tradition Cash Lumber continues today. He retired in 1998.
Mr. Ekart was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. He very much enjoyed cooking and trout fishing. He was a skilled woodworker, cabinet and furniture maker, builder and designer.
Survivors included his wife, Patricia, of the home; son, Timothy R. Ekart, and his wife, Jacquelyn, of Wamego, KS; daughter, Marette R. Ekart, Speedway, IN; his mother, Genevieve Umscheid Ekart, Manhattan; three brothers, Sylvester C. Ekart, and his wife, Marna, Bismarck, ND, David E. Ekart, and his wife, Alice and Donald F. Ekart, and his wife, Sara, all of Manhattan; two sisters, Delores A. Wells, Topeka, KS and Kathleen M. Ekart, Aurora, CO; two beautiful granddaughters, Mariah Diane and Kaitlyn Sue Ekart , Wamego; an ex-son in law, Stuart Harris; sixteen nieces and nephews; and many grand nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 30, 2004 in the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Manhattan. Burial will follow in the St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery, in the Elbow community, east of Manhattan.

Obituary: Alden W. “Swede” Lyon, 79, Manhattan, KS passed away Friday, November 12, 2004 at his home after a lengthy illness.
He was born April 8, 1925 at Leonardville, KS, the son of Gustaf W. Lyon and June Johnson Lyon. He grew up in Leonardville and attended schools in Clay Center.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corp as a bombardier and navigator. He was active in the Air Force Reserve and Kansas Air National Guard, retiring at the rank of Lt. Colonel on February 17, 1973.
He was united in marriage to Wilma Jean Bechard on August 30, 1952 at Clay Center. She survives of the home.
Mr. Lyon worked as a manager for retail lumber yards in Arkansas City, KS from 1958-1963, Mulvane, KS from 1963-1973 and Larned, KS from 1973 until his retirement in 1990. While living in Mulvane, he also served as Mayor and Councilman from 1965-1966. He had been a resident of Manhattan since 1990 and worked part time at Kansas Lumber, Homestore and Mead Lumber Companies. He most recently was employed at Homestore Direct.
Mr. Lyon was a member of the American Legion Post No. 106, Larned, U.S. Air Force Association, Military Officers Association, National Guard Association and was a past member of the Larned Lions Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Raymond and Ronald Lyon; and one sister, Elaine Reed.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Lyon is survived by four sons, Raymond Lyon, and his wife, Carol, Overland Park, KS, Martin Lyon, Larned, Gregg Lyon, and his wife, Angela, of Salina and Keith Lyon, and his wife, Marianne, McPherson; a brother, LaVern Lyon, Salina; a sister, Anna Mae Bauer, Sterling, CO; and nine grandchildren, Mitchell, Shayla, Garret, Tyler, Stephen and Scott Lyon and Meredith, Monica and Chris Duke.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 15, 2004 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with the Rev. Keith Weber officiating. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in the Leonardville Cemetery, Leonardville.
