Evelyn A. Gleason
Evelyn A. Gleason, 87, of Seneca, Kansas, died on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.
She was born on August 2, 1924 to Paul and Clare (Brown) Goodman in Stegar, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, the oldest of eight children. She attended school in Chicago, and Bancroft, Kansas, and graduated from Goff High School in Goff, Kansas. During those years, she lettered in basketball and enjoyed playing tennis as well as softball.
Evelyn married
William M. Gleason, Jr., October 28, 1945 at her parents’ home in Bancroft. She and Bill lived in Goff before moving to Seneca in 1960 when they started the Gleason Chevrolet car dealership.
While still in high school, she worked at the Goff Poultry and Egg Plant and also at Wink’s Grocery. She was the bookkeeper and notary at Gleason Chevrolet for 43 years. She and Bill traveled to such places as Hawaii, Germany, Paris, and Tahiti. Her husband Bill surives of the home.
She was a member of the Seneca United Methodist Church, American Legion Auxiliary, and Business and Professional Women (BPW). She enjoyed crochet, cooking, and spending time with family and friends.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Mildred Chase; her brothers, Paul Goodman, Jr., Glenn Goodman and an infant brother Galen.
Besides her husband Bill survivors include two sons, Roger (Jolene) Gleason of Parkville, Missouri; Dennis (Betty) Gleason of Seneca; a daughter, Sondra (Kent) Rogers of Manhattan, Kansas; a sister, Virginia Blake of Tulsa, Oklahoma; two brothers, Darwin Goodman of Topeka and Loren Goodman of Silver Lake; five grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
Family visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 PM Friday, July 6, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. The celebration of life service will be held at 10 AM Saturday, July 7, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Seneca City Cemetery.
The memorial beneficiary will designated at a later date; donations can be sent in care of the family.
Bernard A. "Ben" Glissman
Bernard A. "Ben" Glissman, 84, of Seneca, Kansas, died Saturday, December 1, 2001, at his home.
He was born February 18, 1917, on a farm south of Kelly, KS, the son of Bernard and Agnes Enneking Glissman. He grew up there, attended St. Bede's School in Kelly, and worked on the family farm.
On April 16, 1941, he married
Rose M. Hermesch at St. Bede's Church in Kelly. They lived and farmed northwest of Wetmore, KS, for two years before moving to a farm southwest of Kelly. In 1952 Ben started work as an agent for Farmers Union Insurance. He sold insurance for 32 years before selling the business to his son-in-law David Haverkamp. While selling insurance Ben qualified with many different outstanding sales and services for the company and won trips for his efforts. He and his wife, Rose, moved to Seneca in 1984. She survives of the home.
He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church, the St. Joseph Society at the church, and the Knights of Columbus #1769 for over 50 years, all in Seneca. He was also a member of the Nemaha County Co-op and served on the board of directors. He was a former member of St. Bede's Church, the St. Bede's Society, and served on the church committee at Kelly.
Survivors besides his wife, Rose, are; two sons, Richard "Dick" Glissman and Ronald Glissman, both of Centralia, KS; six daughters, Jo Ann Meyer of Soldier, KS, Mary Ellen Russell of Sabetha, KS, Shirley Hammes and Myra Haverkamp both of Seneca, KS, Connie Haverkamp of Silver Lake, KS, and Joyce Grose of Bern, KS; a brother, Cletus Glissman of Wetmore, KS; two sisters, Frances Steinlage of Seneca, KS, and Agnes Boden of Havensville, KS; a half sister, Betty Kongs of Seneca; 25 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, August and Callistus and Aloysius; two sisters, Theresa Blocker and Sister Agnes Marie; two half-brothers, Henry and Leo Hunninghake; two step-brothers, Ray and Albert Korte; and two half-sisters, Annie Glissman and Mary Krogman.
The mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, December 4 at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. The burial will be in St. Bede'sCemeteryin Kelly. There will be a prayer service at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca on Sunday at 8 P.M., with rosaries at 2 and 7 P.M. Monday, also at the funeral home.

Rose M. Glissman
Rose M. Glissman, 87, of Seneca, KS, died Saturday, October 18, 2008 at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.
She was born on April 8, 1921, on a farm southeast of Kelly, KS, the daughter of Joseph and Emma Boeckman Hermesch. She grew up in the Kelly community and attended St. Bede's School in Kelly.
On April 16, 1941, she married
Bernard A. "Ben" Glissman at St. Bede's Church in Kelly. They lived and farmed northwest of Wetmore, KS, for two years before moving to a farm southwest of Kelly. The couple moved to Seneca in 1984; and celebrated their 60th anniversary before Ben’s death on December 1, 2001.
She was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church and the St. Ann’s Altar Society in Seneca. She worked 17 years for the school lunch program at Nemaha Valley Schools. She loved her grandchildren and family. She enjoyed cards, her garden and flowers. She had a special love for quilting for her grandchildren and for the church.
Survivors are two sons, Richard and Ronald Glissman, both of Centralia, KS; six daughters, Jo Ann Meyer of Soldier, KS, Mary Ellen Russell of Sabetha, KS, Shirley Hammes and Myra Haverkamp both of Seneca, KS, Connie Haverkamp of Silver Lake, KS, and Joyce Grose of Bern, KS; a brother, Henry Hermesch of Seneca; two sisters, Eleanor Schultejans and Alfreda Kramer, both of Corning; 25 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, George, Adolph, Leo, and Fredolin Hermesch; and two sisters, Mary Hermesch and Florence Bergman.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 AM Tuesday, October 21, at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. Burial will be in St. Bede'sCemeteryin Kelly. Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM Monday at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.

E. Lois Gordon
E. Lois Gordon, 82, Seneca, died Thursday, September 22, 2005, at Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan. She was recently diagnosed with cancer.
She was born March 4, 1923, near Wheaton, KS, the daughter of Joseph W. and Arcena Crevier Sanders. She graduated from the Beattie High School.
She was married
to William E. DePoortere and lived in Kansas City until 1975. She was employed in North Kansas City as the manager of a nationwide catalog company from 1960 to 1975. Lois and her husband were planning to move to Seneca when William became ill and died February 22, 1975. Lois moved to the Lake Nemaha area near Seneca. She worked at C.R. Industries from 1977 to 1987.
On September 26, 1981, she married
LeRoy “Buss” Gordon at Beatrice, NE. They lived in Marysville, Seneca and Washington, KS. She moved to Terrace Heights in Seneca in September of 2004. Her husband, “Buss, ” died January 10, 2005.
Lois enjoyed reading, puzzles, gardening, growing flowers, and sewing.
Survivors are a son, Roger Fuller, Kansas City, MO; two daughters, Roberta Vaughn, Lathrop, MO and Sue Macasio, Seneca; a step-daughters, Sharon Gordon, Memphis, TN; two brothers, Leo Sanders, Baileyville and Joseph "Jody" Sanders, Centralia; two sisters, Eileen Gundelfinger, Axtell, and Rita Berry, Marysville; and 18 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond; and four sisters, Marie Thorn and Arcena Pifer, and Rose and Lila as infants.
Memorial services will be 2 P.M. Sunday at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. The family will meet with friends for one hour before the service. Inurnment will be in the Sts. Peter and PaulCemeteryfollowing the services.

LeRoy A. "Buss" Gordon
LeRoy A. “Buss” Gordon, 77, Seneca, KS, died Monday, January 10, 2005, at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.
He was born July 3, 1927, on a farm northwest of Washington, KS, the son of Lesslie and Leona Carpenter Gordon. He was one of 12 children. He attended school in Washington and worked there before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1949, serving in Germany. After his discharge in 1952, he returned to Washington and did construction work for many years with Hall Brothers Construction, building highways and bridges. Later he worked for the city of Marysville and retired as the street foreman in 1988.
He was married
to Lois Sanders DePoortere on September 26, 1981 at Beatrice, NE. They lived in Marysville until his retirement and moved to Seneca in 1988.
He was a member of the American Legion in Lynn, KS.
Survivors are his wife, Lois; a step-son, Roger Fuller, Kansas City, MO; two step-daughters, Roberta Vaughn, Lathrop, MO and Sue Macasio, Seneca; two daughters, Sharon Gordon, Memphis, TN, and Tammy Galloway, Lawrence, KS; a brother, Raymond “Bud” Gordon, Morrowville, KS; 20 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 1 P.M. Friday at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. There will be an inurnment service at 3 P.M. Friday following the funeral at the MorrowvilleCemeteryin Morrowville, KS, with military honors provided by a U.S. Army detail from Fort Riley.

Mary M. Grable
Mary Mardell Grable, 84, of Osage Beach, Missouri, formerly of the Vermillion, Kansas area, died on Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at Lake Regional Health System in Osage Beach, Missouri.
Mary was born on November 20, 1927, along with her twin, Margaret, to Enoch and Emma Hurtie. She graduated from Frankfort High School in Frankfort, Kansas.
On August 24, 1946 she married
Maurice Grable in Centralia, Kansas. Mary was a homemaker while her husband worked as a barber in Wathena, Kansas. She later worked for Rileys & Moskau grocery stores, Southwestern Bell and AT&T, where she was recognized for being an outstanding phone operator.
Mary and Maurice retired to Osage Beach in 1989. She was a member of Harper Chapel United Methopdist Church in Osage Beach, and was an active participant in the women's group at the church.
Mary loved to write poems and share them with others. She always looked for the positive and sought to encourage others. She enjoyed tap dancing and took special pleasure in seeing her grandchildren's activities.
She was preceded in death by her husband Maurice on July 21, 2008; and by her parents.
Survivors include her children Julie Gurss and husband John of Easton, Kansas, John Grable and wife Fran of St. Joseph, Missouri, Jeannie Byrne and husband Kevin of Osage Beach, Missouri; two sisters, her twin Margaret Polson of Beattie, Kansas and Barbara Mills of Aurora, Colorado; six grandchildren, Emilee Gurss, Erin Naidu, Cori Byrne, Jacob Byrne, Jessica Byrne and Hannah Byrne; and two great grandchildren, Kyron Jackson and Lally Naidu; along with other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be held at 4 PM Saturday, September 8, at the Beattie United Methodist Church in Beattie, Kansas; family will visit with friends for one hour prior to service time. Burial will follow at Vermillion Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca, Kansas.
Charles R. Gress
Charles R. Gress, 85, of Seneca, Kansas died Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.
Charles was born on January 27, 1928 on a farm northeast of Seneca, the son of Aloysius and Lorena Tanking Gress. When he was two years old the family moved to a farm near Baileyville. In 1933 they moved to a farm near St. Bridget. In 1937 the family moved to the Gress homestead northeast of Seneca. He attended school in St. Bridget and Seneca, graduating from Sts. Peter & Paul High School in 1945.
After school he worked in St. Joseph for the Armour Company and in Kansas City for General Motors. Later he did custom baling.
Charles was drafted into the U.S. Army on October 18, 1950 and served in the 4th Quartermaster Company 4th Division APO 39. He served 18 months in Germany in support of the 5th Army. He was discharged on October 7, 1952.
After military service, he worked at Winterscheidt Milling and Goodyear in Topeka. He then returned to farming in Nemaha County.
On May 22, 1954 he married
Ann Heideman at St. Patrick’s Church in Corning. They farmed near Goff for a year, and then near Mercier for five years before moving back to farm and operate a dairy near Seneca. Charles retired from dairy farming in 1990. He and Ann built a new home and moved into Seneca in 1996.
He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, St. Joseph’s Society, and the parish council in Seneca. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus Council #1769 and the American Legion Post #21 in Seneca. He enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, and delivering Meals on Wheels. Charles did woodworking, making toys for his grandkids and making monstrances that were sent to missions around the world.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Allie in 1985 and Lorena in 1997; and brothers, Leonard Gress in 1959 and Emmett Gress in 1931.
Besides his wife Ann, he is survived by his children, Kathleen (Wes) Elkins of Kansas City, Missouri, Joseph (Ron) Gress of Niles, Michigan, Jean (Richard) Wassenberg of Seneca, Richard Gress of Seneca, Mary (Patrick) Shields of Fort Smith, Arkansas, Doris Palmer of Lenox, Massachusetts, John (Gwendolyn) Gress of Boulder, Colorado, Larry (Michele) Gress of Overland Park, Randy (Nancy) Gress of Merriam, Brian (Ann) Gress of Omaha, Nebraska; a brother, Norbert Gress of Seneca, three sisters, Dorothy Dick of Platte City, Missouri, Eleanor Heideman of Seneca and Arlene Haverkamp of Seneca; 18 grandchildren, Melissa Elkins, Josh Elkins, Zachary Wassenberg, Adam Wassenberg, Katie Wassenberg, Kevin Shields, James Shields, Anna Shields, Travis Palmer, Daniel Palmer, Amanda Gress, Kyle Gress, Elizabeth Gress, Jackson Gress, Sarah Gress, Olivia Gress, Keegan Gress, Carter Gress; and two great-grandchildren.
Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM Friday, March 8, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 AM Saturday, March 9, at the Knights of Columbus Building in Seneca. Burial will be with military honors in Sts. Peter & PaulCemeteryin Seneca.
