Mark A. Haas

Mark A. Haas, 55, of Kansas City, Kansas, died Saturday, May 18, 2013 at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City.
Mark was born on February 9, 1959 to William H. and Miriam Sue Cassaday Haas in Arkansas City, Kansas.
Dues to a disability, at four years old he went to live at Winfield State Hospital in Winflield, Kansas; then to the Parsons State Hospital & Training Center in Parsons, Kansas. He also lived for a time in Lawrence, Kansas. Most recently he made his home at Community Living Opportunity in Merriam, Kansas.
Mark had a deep love for listening to music, often for hours on end; he also enjoyed playing the piano. He was an attentive caretaker of plants at his living facitlity, and took great pride in whatever he did.
He was preceded in death by his father, William H. Haas on September 25, 2000; a sister, Linda Jordan in 2006; and a nephew, David R. Wiltfong, Jr. on March 12, 2007.
Survivors are his mother Sue Haas of Seneca; five brothers, Dan Haas of Overland Park, Kansas, Charles Haas of Plano, Texas, John and Fritz Haas, both of Seneca, and Steven Haas of Alabama; a sister, Kathie Wiltfong of Seneca; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside service will be held at 11 AM Thursday, May 23, at the Seneca City Cemetery.

Miriam Sue "Sue" Haas

Miriam Sue Haas, 88, Seneca, died Sunday, November 30, 2014, at Life Care Center in Seneca.
Sue was born on July 14, 1926, to Edwin F. and Alice R. Geiger Cassaday in Huntington, Indiana. She graduated from Columbia City High School in Columbia City, Indiana. After graduating, she attended Jordon Conservatory of Music at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana. She moved to Emporia, Kansas in 1949, where she met William H. Haas; they were married on September 3, 1950. The couple moved often, due to Bill’s teaching career; they settled in Arkansas City, Kansas in 1957, where they lived and raised their family until 1965. During those years Sue was a stay home mom but was very instrumental in setting up the local Association for Mentally Handicapped Children. In 1965, they moved to Seneca, where they continued to live until her death (except for one year from May of 1968 to August of 1969 when Bill was called to active duty at Ft. Carson, Colorado). Bill and Sue celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in September of 2000 just prior to Bill’s death.
Sue was involved in setting up Head Start Program in Nemaha County, acting as the director and teaching for 1 year. After returning to Seneca in 1969 she was employed by the Area Agency on Aging and helped organize and run the local nutrition center. She continued as the bookkeeper at the nutrition center until her retirement in 1991. She is also remembered as the Avon lady for many rural customers in the 1970’s.
She was a former member of the United Methodist Church in Seneca and later she joined the New Hope Baptist in Seneca.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Haas on September 25, 2000; a son, Mark A. Haas on May 18, 2013; a daughter, Linda Jordan in 2006; and a grandson, David R. Wiltfong, Jr. on March 12, 2007.
Survivors are her five sons, Dan Haas of Overland Park, Kansas, Charles Haas of Plano, Texas, John and Fritz Haas, both of Seneca, and Steven Haas of Dalesville, Alabama; a daughter, Kathie Wiltfong of Seneca; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
There will be a visitation on Tuesday evening, from 7 to 8 P.M. at Lauer Funeral Home. A graveside services will be held on Wednesday, December 3rd at 2 P.M. at the Seneca CityCemeteryin Seneca. The family will meet at the Lauer Funeral Home for a procession to the cemetery.
Memorials are for the Alzheimer Association sent in care of the family.

William H. Haas

William H. Haas, 74, of Seneca, Kansas, died Monday, September 25, 2000, at his home in Seneca. His death was due to an apparent heart attack.
He was born November 26, 1925, Waterloo, Iowa, the son of George H. and Gladys Long Haas. When he was six months old, the family moved to Lincoln, KS, where he attended the Lincoln Public School and graduated from high school in 1944. Shortly thereafter he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in England, France and Germany in the intelligence department. After his discharge in 1946, he returned to Lincoln. He later enrolled at the Emporia State Teacher's College, graduating in 1954.
On September 3, 1950, he married Miriam Sue Cassaday at the First Congregational Church in Emporia, Kansas. She survives of the home in Seneca. They lived in Emporia and later in Jewel, Wilsey and Arkansas City, where he taught from 1957 to 1965. In the summer of 1965 they moved to Seneca where Bill taught social studies and U.S. government at the Seneca Public High School, and later the Nemaha Valley High School, until his retirement in 1989.
He was a member of the Kansas National Guard and was activated in 1968 for two years at Ft. Carlson, Colorado during the Vietnam War. He attained the rank of Master Sergeant and retired after 30 years of service. He and his wife recently celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with a trip to Colorado with some of their children.
He was a member of the Seneca Memorial Post #7458 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Earl W. Taylor Post #21 of the American Legion, and the National Educational Association, all at Seneca.
Survivors besides his wife, Sue, are: six sons, Dan Haas of Overland Park, KS; Charles Haas of West Hills, CA; Mark Haas of Lawrence, KS; John Haas, Fritz Haas, and Steven Haas, all of Seneca; two daughters, Linda Jordan of Arkansas City, KS and Kathie Wiltfong of Seneca; three sisters, Clara Belle Mason of Salina, KS; Della Palmer of Wasilla, Alaska; Donna Thomas of Avilla, MO; ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services with full military honors will be held at 10 A.M. Thursday, September 28, at the Seneca City Cemetery. The family and friends will meet at Lauer Funeral Home at 9:30 and proceed to the cemetery. A visitation will be held at Lauer Funeral Home on Wednesday evening from 7 to 8 P.M.
Memorials may be given for Nemaha Valley High School or the World War II Memorial and sent in care of the family.

Anna Hammes

Anna M. Hammes, 90, of Seneca, KS, died Thursday, August 14, 2003, at Crestview Manor in Seneca where she had been a resident since November of 2000.
She was born March 4, 1913, on the Niekamp homestead east of Baileyville, KS, the daughter of Herman and Alice Larkin Niekamp. She attended Sacred Heart School and helped on the family farm. She also did domestic work for the Elmer Winterscheidt family in Seneca.
On May 4, 1941, she married Leonard H. Hammes at Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville. They farmed north of Baileyville until 1957 when they moved to a farm northeast of St. Benedict. In 1983 they retired from farming and moved to Seneca. Her husband, Leonard, preceded her in death on July 8, 1987.
She was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church, St. Ann's Altar Society, the L.C.B.A., and the Nemaha County Historical Society.
Survivors are a son Clayton Hammes and a daughter, Nancy Uphaus, both of Topeka; three sisters, Louise Stuke, Aurelia Stallbaumer, and Cecilia Niekamp, all of Seneca; six grandsons and three great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Niekamp, an infant, on March 12, 1916, and Elmer Niekamp on March 18, 2000.
The mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 A.M. Monday at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. The burial will be in the church cemetery. The rosary will be prayed at 2 P.M. Sunday at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.
Memorials may be given for the Nemaha County Historical Society and sent in care of the family.

Cleta M. Hammes

Cleta M. Hammes, 70, Rt. 1, Seneca, died Wednesday, February 9, 2005, at Life Care Center in Seneca. She had Parkinson’s disease since 1979.
She was born August 9, 1934, near Seneca, the daughter of Leo and Bertha Bergman Lierz. She attended Pleasant Hill School.
On February 27, 1954, she married Gerald Hammes at St. Augustine Church, Fidelity. They lived three miles west of Seneca, their present farm, where they raised livestock and always had a large garden. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 2004.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Church at Baileyville, the Altar Society, where she served as an officer, and the church choir.
Survivors besides her husband Gerald of the home are: two sons, Bob Hammes of Hoyt and Mike Hammes of Topeka; five daughters; LuAnn Roth of Paxico, Marlene Wessel of Seneca, Joan Glissman of Centralia, and Ellen Laird and Tricia Hammes, both of Topeka; three brothers, Elmer Lierz of Seneca, Verness Lierz of Kansas City, MO, and Gerald Lierz of Holton; two sisters Eileen Sudbeck of Rt 1, Seneca, and Marceil Rottinghaus of Yuma, AZ; and 17 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Lester Lierz, August 16, 1963 and an infant brother, Victor, in 1936.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday at Sacred Heart Church at Baileyville. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The rosary will be prayed at 2 and 7 P.M. Friday the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca, where she will lie in state after 8:30 A.M.
Memorials may be given for Sacred HeartCemeteryand sent in care of the family.

M. Lucille Hammes

M. Lucille Hammes, 83, of Baileyville, Kansas, died Monday, April 15, 2002, at Country View Estates Care Home in Seneca, Kansas.
She was born November 2, 1918, on a farm northwest of Baileyville, the daughter and one of six children of Aloysius and Margaret Engelken Hammes. She grew up in Baileyville where her family moved when she was two months old. She attended Sacred Heart School in Baileyville.
Lucille worked with Cora Horacek as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell in Baileyville for several years. She was employed as a clerk at the US Post Office in Baileyville for 20 years until her retirement in 1984. She helped care for her mother, and later for her brother, Clarence, in their home at Baileyville where they lived together. After becoming ill on December 25, 2000, she was hospitalized at Topeka and Seneca. In January of 2001, she entered Country View Estates Care Home.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Church and St. Ann's Altar Society at the church, and the Pinochle and Pitch Club, all in Baileyville. Her hobbies include crocheting, embroidery and reading.
Survivors include a brother, Elmer Hammes of Seneca, Kansas.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Maurice, Leonard, and Clarence; and a sister Kathleen Feldkamp.
The mass of Christian burial will be 11 A.M. Thursday at Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville. The burial will be in the church cemetery. The rosary will be prayed at 7 P.M. Wednesday at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.
Memorials may be given for Sacred HeartCemeteryor for the Parkinson's Disease Association and sent in care of the family.

Louise Hanni

Louise Hanni, 92, of Bern, Kansas, died Sunday, January 7, 2001, at the Sabetha Hospital, Sabetha, Kansas. She was transferred there from the Apostolic Christian Care Home where she had been a resident since July of 1999.
She was born September 14, 1908, on a farm west of Woodlawn, Kansas, the daughter of Alexander and Jane Bessie Jonach Baumgartner. She attended a rural school near her home and helped on the family farm.
On July 27, 1932, she married Albert Hanni at her home, the farm west of Woodlawn. He preceded her in death on June 22, 1988. They lived near St. Joseph, Missouri, until 1933 when they moved to Danville, Indiana, where they farmed. In 1934 they returned to Kansas and the Nemaha County area to farm and raise livestock on a farm east of Bern. They retired in 1972 and moved to Seneca before moving to Bern in 1977.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church at Bern. She liked gardening, flowers, and needlework. Louise always followed the lives of her family and especially the grandchildren with great interest.
Also preceding her in death were six sisters, Mae Gifford, Sadie Hailey, Lucille Babb, Florence Roden, Crystal Kennedy, and Jane Baumgartner; and four brothers, Floyd, Sylvan, Alfred, and Carl Baumgartner.
Survivors are two sons, Roger Hanni and J.R. Hanni both of Bern; a daughter, Donna Kussman of St. Joseph, Missouri; a brother, Alex Baumgartner of Conroe, TX; a sister, Eva Sherwood of El Cajon, California; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 10 A.M. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Bern. The burial will be in the Bern Cemetery. The family will meet with friends on Wednesday from 7 to 8 P.M. at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca where she will lie in state after 8:30 A.M. on Wednesday.
Memorial contributions may be given for the United Methodist Church at Bern and sent in care of the family.
