Obituary: Frank G. Bieberly, 92, Manhattan, KS passed away Sunday, January 16, 2005 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.

He was born February 29, 1912 at Spearville, KS, the son of Alois R. Bieberly and Mary Budig Bieberly. He grew up in Spearville, where he attended the local parochial school and was a graduate of the Spearville High School. He later obtained a BS degree in economics from Kansas State University in 1938 and in 1949 received a MS degree in Agronomy.

Mr. Bieberly began his professional career as vocational agriculture instructor at Paxico Rural High School. He joined the Kansas State University Cooperative Extension Service in 1941 as Assistant County Agent in Morris County and transferred to the position of County Extension Agent of Hamilton County in 1942. In 1946 he left Hamilton County to move to Manhattan where he became Extension Agronomist at K-State. As extension agronomist, his major specialty was crop production, soil management and resource conservation in the high plains. He was appointed Section Leader of all Extension agronomy in 1962 and directed the state-wide agronomy educational program. He served on the Board of Directors of the Kansas Plant Food Council from 1962 until his retirement in 1977.

Mr. Bieberly served as chairman of the newly created Great Plains Agricultural Council Conservation Tillage Task Force and coordinated the planning and supervision of residue management throughout the Great Plains. He was appointed a member of the Ozarks Regional Commission Mined-land Task Group by Governor Robert Docking, and coordinated a program on strip-mined land reclamation with several state and federal agencies. He also served as coordinator of the Extension Chemical Task Force in conducting educational programs on safe use of pesticides and other farm chemicals. In connection with this program, he edited a monthly newsletter on pesticide safety which was distributed nation wide and in several foreign countries.

Mr. Bieberly served as director of the Agricultural Exhibit Hall and superintendent of crops at the Kansas State Fair for more that 25 years. He served nine years on the KSU Faculty Senate and on numerous University committees, where he rose to the rank of a full Professor. He was the recipient of many awards and honors including the Gamma Sigma Delta Honorary Agricultural Fraternity and the Epsilon Sigma Phi Honorary Extension Fraternity. He was awarded the Epsilon Sigma Phi National Certificate of Recognition in the field of Extension teaching, the Kansas Fertilizer and Chemical Institute Distinguished Service Through Education Award and the KFCI recognition for the success of Kansas agriculture. He was a member of the Phi Kappa Theta Social Fraternity and the American Society of Agronomy.

After his retirement, Mr. Bieberly devoted much of his time to programs for the enhancement of the lives of the elderly. He initiated and edited a newsletter for the senior citizens of Riley County, KS. He served many years as a member of the executive board of Riley County Council on Aging, serving as chairman and heading the campaign for the construction of the Riley County Senior Service Center. He served four years on the board of Directors of the Northcentral/Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging and served as its treasurer. He was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Manhattan and was active in numerous church and Catholic school committees.

He was united in marriage to Genevieve Scheffer on December 27, 1939 at St. Marys, KS. She survives of the home. Other survivors include his children, Jeanne Hannebaum, and husband, Dean, Yukon, OK, Janet Wilkerson, and husband, Ray, Arlington, TX, Dr. Frank Bieberly, Jr., and wife, Susan, Pukwana, SD, John Bieberly, and wife, Vicki, Manhattan, Dr. Joseph Bieberly, and wife, Robin, Unicoi, TN and Dr. Julie Moore, and husband, Bruce, Salina, KS; a brother,Walter Bieberly, Silver Springs, MD; 21 grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jerilyn Broussard in 1996; his parents; and several brothers and sisters.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, January 20, 2005 in the Seven Dolors Catholic Church with Father Lawrence Grennan and Father Richard Weixelman as celebrants. Burial will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

Obituary: Evan W. Williams, 74, retired Assistant Professor and Librarian at Kansas State University, passed away Sunday, January 16, 2005 at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Lawrence, KS.

He was born June 10, 1930 at St. Louis, MO, the son of George D. Williams and Effie Peelle Williams. He grew up in St. Louis, where he attended the local schools and was a graduate of the Country Day High School. He later attended Harvard University in 1948, received a BA degree in Sociology and Anthropology from Washington University in St. Louis and his BSLS degree from the University of Illinois.

He was united in marriage to Susan Fox on December 23, 1956 at Indianapolis, IN. She preceded him in death on May 28, 1968. He was later married to Evelyn Kelner, Carol Johnson and Marilyn Mann. He was married to Edith Ann Kirk on November 7, 1987 at Wamego, KS. She survives of the home.

Mr. Williams was Assistant Professor, Librarian and Curator of Rare Books at the Farrell Library on the campus of Kansas State University for over 22 years. He retired in 1986 and had been a resident of Lawrence for the past 8 years.

He was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church, Manhattan. Other memberships included the Wranglers and the Kansas Corral of the Westerners.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Williams is survived by a brother, Jeffrey B. Williams, Baltimore, MD.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 19, 2005 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with Mother Jo Wright officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Cemetery, Manhattan.

Obituary: Keith O. Zoellner, 73, Professor Emeritus at Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS passed away Monday, January 10, 2005 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.

He was born July 19, 1931 at Aberdeen, S.D., the son of Melvin M. Zoellner and Minnie L. Zoellner. He grew up on the family purebred Angus and crop farm near Groton, SD and attended the local country schools. In 1953, he graduated from South Dakota State University with a BS degree in Animal Husbandry. After spending two years in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps, he returned to South Dakota State to earn a MS degree in Animal Breeding in 1957. From 1957-1959, he was on the staff of the Animal Husbandry Extension service at the University of Nebraska and in 1959 left to pursue a Ph.D. in Animal Breeding from the University of Missouri. He graduated in 1962 and joined the Animal Husbandry Extension Department at Kansas State University. He retired in October 1996.

Dr. Zoellner was united in marriage to Arlys M. Johnson on December 30, 1958 at Groton, SD. She survives of the home.

During his 34-year tenure at KSU as a Beef Cattle Extension Specialist, Dr. Zoellner was responsible for the state-wide educational programs of beef cattle breeding and management. He was a major contributor in the establishment of the Kansas Bull Test, several steer futurities, the 4-State Beef Conference and the Purebred Seminars. Dr. Zoellner was the Kansas representative to the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) from its beginning in 1968 until his retirement. He served as the Chairman of the BIF Bull Test Committee and was an author of the BIF Feeder Calf Performance Program. He held numerous committee assignments and leadership roles including the KSU Cattlemen’s Day Committee, KSU Beef Integrated Resource Management Committee, Kansas State Fair Beef Superintendent, Kansas 4-H Livestock Advisory Committee and the KSU 4-H Discovery Days. He was the author of numerous Extension publications and Cattlemen’s Day papers and served as a consultant for the Perkins Blue Sky Farms, Calvey Ranches in Nicaragua, Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education, American Hereford Association and was on the screening committee for the Northeast Kansas Hereford Association. In 2003, he was awarded the Pioneer Award from the Beef Improvement Federation, honoring his many contributions to the national beef industry.

He was a member of the American Society of Animal Science, American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists, Gamma Sigma Delta Agricultural Honorary Fraternity and the Epsilon Sigma Phi National Extension Fraternity, Kansas Livestock Association, Groton Masonic Lodge and the First Lutheran Church, Manhattan.

In addition to his wife, Dr. Zoellner is survived by a daughter, Dr. Lori A. Zoellner, Seattle, WA; a brother, Gene Zoellner and his wife Marlene, Brandon, SD; a sister, Patricia Bonnichsen and her husband Martin, Highmore, SD; brother-in-law, Merton Johnson and his wife Ella, Groton, SD; brother-in-law, Lyle Johnson and his wife Mary, Houston, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 15, 2005 in the First Lutheran Church, Manhattan with the Rev. Dr. Keith E. Wiens officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Livestock & Meat Industry Council Fund (LMIC) or the First Lutheran Church and left in care of the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan.

Obituary: John H. Hellman, 92, Manhattan, KS passed away Monday, January 03, 2005 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.

He was born January 28, 1912 at Hanover, KS, the son of John Hellman and Mary Lane Hellman. He grew up in Hanover and attended the local schools.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Medical Corps in the South Pacific with the U.S. Army. He was awarded numerous medals and awards including the Bronze Star with clusters.

He was united in marriage to Vivian Helen Hatfield on June 27, 1951 at Wichita, KS. She preceded him in death on January 30, 2003.

Mr. Hellman had been a Manhattan resident since 1954 and worked as an independent welder and pipe fitter.

He was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Manhattan and the St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Maple Hill, KS. Other memberships included the Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Local Union No. 441, Wichita and Lee Pierson V.F.W. Post No. 1786, Manhattan.

In addition to the wife, Mr. Hellman was preceded in death by a daughter, Judith Ann Moss in 1976; his parents; two brothers, George and C.B. Hellman; two sisters, Theta “Kitty” Robbins and Janet Mengers; and one granddaughter, Robin L. Moss.

Survivors include a sister, Mary “Dutch” Monnat, Manhattan; a daughter, Patricia L. Parker, Washington, KS; two sons, John E. Hellman, Junction City and Jerry L. Hellman, Washington; seven grandchildren, Jeri Ann Cole, Jeff Hellman, Sandra K. Hellman, Janna Baustert, Alex Parker, Kyle Parker and Ethan Parker; and seven great grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, January 7, 2005 in the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Manhattan with the Rev. Eric Flood officiating. Graveside services, with full military honors, will be at 2:00 p.m. in the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Hanover.

Obituary: Helen Schultz Custer, 101, Manhattan, KS passed away Tuesday, December 14, 2004 in the Meadowlark Hills Health Care Center/Lyle House, Manhattan.

She was born in Randolph, KS, the daughter of Frederick W. and Charlena Moorhead Schultz. Her family moved to Crichton, AL when she was six years old and returned to Manhattan when she was twelve. She lived the remainder of her life in Manhattan.

Helen worked for 33 years at Cole’s Department Store as a cosmetician after training in New York City at the Charles of the Ritz School of Cosmetology. After retiring she discovered she had a talent for painting and for writing poetry. Some of her poetry was published. She also enjoyed making gift enclosure cards, cooking, and making memorable disserts, especially lemon meringue pies. She was a long time member of the Manhattan First Presbyterian Church, the Christian Women’s Club, the Thursday Morning Circle and was an active member of Manhattan Chapter No. 209, Order of the Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 48 years, Clarence B. Custer, on October 10, 1975, as well as her sister, Grace, and four brothers, Charles, Edward, Russell and Jack.

She is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great and great great nieces and nephews as well as many special friends.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, December 20, 2004 in the First Presbyterian Church, Manhattan. Visitation will be from 3 until 4:30 p.m., Sunday at the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan. Burial will follow in the Sunset Cemetery, Manhattan.

Obituary: Helen Marie Robertson, 83, Manhattan, KS passed away Saturday, December 11, 2004 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.

She was born May 29, 1921 at Lexington, KY, the daughter of Gilbert Durward Robertson and Iva Marie Adams Robertson. She grew up in Lexington where she attended the local schools and was a 1939 graduate of a Lexington High School. She later attended the Fugazzi Business College in Lexington.

Miss Robertson worked as a secretary in the Chaplain’s office of the Veterans Administration in Lexington for over 40 years. She retired in 1980. She had been a Manhattan resident since July 1991.

She was a member of the Broadway Christian Church while living in Lexington and since moving to Manhattan had joined the University Christian Church, Manhattan. She held duel memberships in the Henry Clay Chapter No. 398, O.E.S., Lexington and Manhattan Chapter No. 209, O.E.S., Manhattan and was also a life and charter member of the Akielo Temple No. 128, Daughters of the Nile, Lexington.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister Juanita Ruth Johnson on June 28, 1995.

Survivors include a niece, Kristina Mattox, and her husband, J. David, Manhattan; and a nephew, Robert Steven Johnson, Kansas City, MO.

A visitation for family and friends will be from 7 until 8 p.m., Tuesday, December 14, 2004 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan. Graveside services will be held at a later date in a Lexington cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Riley County Humane Society and left in care of the funeral home.

Obituary: Phillip M. Williams, 89, Manhattan, KS passed away Wednesday, December 8, 2004 in the Stoneybrook Health Care Center, Manhattan.

He was born September 27, 1915 in the Ashland community, south of Manhattan, the son of Charles Williams and Sadie Burr Williams. He grew up in Ashland Bottoms where he attended the local elementary school and was a 1935 graduate of the Manhattan High School. He later attended Kansas State Agricultural College, Manhattan.

He was united in marriage to Olie Louise “Polly” Carley on November 27, 1938 at Manhattan. She survives of the home.

Mr. Williams, along with his brother, Alvin “Deak” Williams, owned and operated the Williams Appliance Center in Manhattan for many years.

He was a member of the Ashland Community Church and the Man-Kan Campers.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Williams is survived by a son, Garry L. Williams, and his wife, Shirley, Ballwin, MO; one daughter, Linda W. Gamble, Greensboro, NC; a brother, Alvin “Deak” Williams, and his wife, Edna, Manhattan; seven grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Clifford and Lowell Williams; and a sister, Mabel Johnston.

Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 11, 2004 in the Ashland Community Church, south of Manhattan. Inurnment will follow in the Ashland Cemetery. The Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Ashland Community Church or the Ashland Community Center and left in care of the funeral home.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8 p.m., Friday at the funeral home.
