Mary M. Hughes

Mary M. Hughes, 88, of Seneca, Kansas, died Saturday, May 12, 2012 at Crestview Manor care home in Seneca.
She was born May 14, 1923, on a farm northwest of St. Bridget, Kansas, the daughter of James T. and Mary D. McClary Cunningham. She attended Summerfield High School for two years and graduated from Beattie High School in 1942. She moved with her family to Frankfort, Kansas, where she did domestic work and helped families with newborn babies.
On July 29, 1943, she joined the U.S. Navy and became a WAVE. After taking training at Hunter College in New York, she worked in the Quartermaster Naval Code and Signal Lab. Later she was stationed in Washington, D.C. and was discharged as a Second Class Quartermaster on December 5, 1945. She then moved to Kansas City, MO and worked as a clerk at Smith’s Drug Store for several years and at Montgomery Ward. She had also been employed by Reiness Paper Mill in Hoquiam, WA. When she returned to Kansas City, she worked for Russell Stover’s for 17 years in sales, in the factory, and managed a store.
On June 27, 1964, she married Robert E. Hughes at Holy Cross Church in Kansas City, Missouri. They lived in Kansas City, Kansas until they moved to Seneca, Kansas in April of 1998. Her husband Bob preceded her in death on September 24, 2004.
She was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church and St. Ann’s Altar Society at the church in Seneca. She was a former member of Christ the King Church in Kansas City, Kansas. She was also a member of the Nocturnal Adoration Society and the American Legion Post #21 in Seneca.
Survivors are her daughter Catherine Ginger of Kansas City, Kansas; two sisters, Theresa Linville of Seneca and Freda Files of Irvine, California; a granddaughter, Brandi Ginger of Kansas City, Kansas; a grandson, Sam Miller, Edwardsville, Kansas and his wife Renee, and two great-grandsons, Talen and Torin Miller.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Robert, Francis, Edward, Joseph and Jerry Cunningham; and one sister, Rose Norvell.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 AM Monday, May 14, at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A rosary will be prayed at 7 PM Sunday, May 13, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.

Robert E. Hughes

Robert E. “Bob” Hughes, 75, Seneca, died Friday, September 24, 2004, shortly after arrival at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca of injuries suffered in a car accident.
He was born December 14, 1928, in Kansas City, Kansas, the son of James and Catherine Burns Hughes. He grew up there and graduated from Bishop Ward High School in 1946. He worked for Kansas City Power and Light in the carpenter shop. Later he worked as a carpenter for various companies. He helped build homes in Kansas City and did other carpenter work until he retired in 1989.
On June 27, 1964, he married Mary Cunningham at Holy Cross Church in Kansas City MO. They lived in Kansas City, KS, until they moved to their present home south of Seneca in April of 1998.
He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. He was a former member of Christ the King Church in Kansas City and of Blessed Sacrament Church where he belonged when he was growing up. He was also a member of the Carpenter’s Union, Local #168 in Kansas City. Robert went to the Federal Prison in Leavenworth as a volunteer to visit with prisoners on their social nights. Bob had three dogs he loved and enjoyed.
Survivors are his wife, Mary of Seneca; a daughter, Catherine Ginger, and her husband, David, and a granddaughter, Brandi Ginger, all of Kansas City, KS; four sisters, Kathleen Stubbers, Kansas City, MO, Helen “Bitsy” McMahon of Overland Park, Liz McNally of Scottsdale, AZ, and Patty Cole of New Mexico.
He was preceded in death by a brother, John Hughes, and a sister, Jane Killeen.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 A.M. Monday at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. Burial will be in the church cemetery.. Rosary will be prayed at 2 P.M. and a prayer service will be conducted at 7 P.M. Sunday at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.
Memorials may be given for a fund to be later designated and sent in care of the family.

Anna Louise Hulsing

Anna Louise Hulsing, 97, of Seneca died on Sunday, December 28, 2014 at Crestview Nursing and Residential Living in Seneca.
Anna was born on March 15, 1917 to Henry and Anna Rethman Wichman Sr, on a farm north of Seneca in the St. Benedict Community. She attended St Mary’s Grade School in St. Benedict and graduated from the 8th Grade.
On September 23, 1940, she married Emil J. Hulsing at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Benedict. They lived south of St. Benedict and in St. Benedict before moving to the Wichman farm north of Seneca, where the couple cared for Anna Louise’s parents for ten years. In 1957, they moved to a farm northeast of Seneca. The couple lived there until Emil’s death on February 10, 1994. Anna built a lovely new home in Seneca, moving into it in 1996. On August 1, 2004 she moved to Crestview’s Residential Living; and in May 2014 she moved to Crestview’s Nursing Home.
She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. She enjoyed needlework and quilting; making baby quilts for gifts for family and neighbors.
She was preceded in death by her father, Henry Wichman on October 12, 1955; her mother, Anna Rethman Wichman on May 17, 1952; and her siblings, John Wichman on March 18, 1965, Frank Wichman in 1903, Rose Skoch on January 9, 1983, Susie Meyer on February 10, 1985, Bertha Tangeman on June 24, 1993, Fred “Fritz” Wichman on June 24, 1978, Nora Schurman on February 12, 1994, Edith Haug on June 5, 1984, Albert Wichman on February 28, 1995 and Henry Wichman Jr on April 21, 1987.
She is survived by two sons, Greg (Vicki) Hulsing of Seneca and Roger Hulsing of Seneca; and five granddaughters and three great grandchildren.
Rosaries will be prayed at the Lauer Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 30th at 2&7 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church at 10AM on Wednesday, December 31st. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Memorials may be left in Anna Louise’s memory to St. Mary’sCemeteryand/or Sts. Peter & Paul.

Anthony H. "Tony" Hulsing

Anthony H. “Tony” Hulsing, 84, Baileyville, died Saturday, November 6, 2004, at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca. He was transferred there from Crestview Manor in Seneca where he had been a resident since April 2001.
He was born July 11, 1920, on a farm north of Baileyville, the son of John G. and Mary Barbara Jordon Hulsing. He grew up there, attended Sacred Heart School, and helped on the family farm.
On August 28, 1946, he married Florence M. Haug at St. Mary’s Church at St. Benedict. They lived and farmed north of Baileyville and moved into Baileyville in 1993. His wife, Florence preceded him in death on December 12, 2002.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Church at Baileyville where he had served on the parish council and the Knights of Columbus #1789 at Seneca for over 50 years. He also served on the Baileyville High School Board, the B & B Board when the two schools consolidated (1965-69), and the Marion Township Board. Tony was a friendly, kind man who enjoyed people. He liked to sing and fishing was a favorite pastime.
Survivors are three sons, Gary and Francis, both of Baileyville, and Donald of Axtell; three daughters, Mary Doris Strathman of Seneca, Judy Stredicke of Puyallup, WA, and Nancy Siess of Topeka; a brother, John P. Hulsing of Baileyville; a sister, Rosemary Schmitz of Seneca; 37 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two daughters, Arlene Gudenkauf on May 27, 1991 and Annette Feldkamp on July 5, 2000; three brothers, Raphael, Nicholas, and an infant, Francis; two sisters, Helen Koch and Barbara Deters.
The mass of Christian burial will be 11 A.M. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville. The burial will be in the church cemetery. The rosary will be prayed at the funeral home on Monday at 2 and 7 P.M.
Memorials may be given for the Sacred Heart Church or for the Arlene Gudenkauf Scholarship Fund, and sent in care of the family.

Donna Z. Hulsing

Donna Zoe Arnold Hulsing, 78, of Seneca, died Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at her home in Seneca.
Donna was born on May 14, 1936 to Thomas E. and Mary Yates Arnold, Sr. in Kansas City, Kansas. She graduated from Wyandotte High School and became a hair stylist after graduating from Callhan’s Beauty School. She owned and operated three hair salons in Kansas City in the 1970s. She worked at KU Medical Center as a data entry supervisor for 14 years, retiring in 1991. After moving to Seneca, she worked at Big B Thriftway for several years.
After retirement, Donna enjoyed many activities; trying her luck at all nearby casinos where she seemed to always come out a winner! Donna met Victor (Buddy) Hulsing in 1997 and her life with him could not have been happier. Bud and Donna were married in Reno, Nevada on August 26, 2006. They enjoyed traveling to Navy ship reunions, K-State games; but most of all they enjoyed each other’s company. Wherever they were, it seemed the fun would follow—young or old, everyone enjoyed being around Bud and Donna.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Benedict and the Seneca VFW Post 7458 Women’s Auxiliary.
Donna is survived by her husband, Victor (Buddy) Hulsing of Seneca; a son, William (Anitia) Burchit of Edgerton, Missouri; a daughter, Brenda Burchit of Kansas City, Missouri; a sister Mary Fiene of Lawrence, Kansas; 5 step-children Kurt (Jolene) Hulsing of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Michelle Hulsing of Omaha, Nebraska, Mark (Shellie) Hulsing of Council Bluffs Iowa, Denise (Jerry) Carew of Omaha, Nebraska, and Karla Ames of Omaha, Nebraska; 3 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and 8 step grandchildren.
Rosaries will be Friday, August 29th at 2 and 7 PM at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian Burial is Saturday, August 30, 2014 at 10AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Benedict, Kansas. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Florence M. Hulsing

Florence M. Hulsing, 80, of Baileyville, KS, died late Thursday, December 12, 2002, at Crestview Manor Care Home in Seneca, KS.
She was born July 23, 1922, on a farm northwest of St. Benedict, KS, the daughter of William C. and Mary P. Haverkamp Haug. She graduated from St. Mary's Grade School and then from St. Benedict High School in 1939, both at St. Benedict. As a young woman, Florence did domestic work and caring for children including the for the family of Cyril and Geneva Lauer in Seneca.
On August 28, 1946, she married Anthony "Tony" Hulsing at St. Mary's Church at St. Benedict. They lived and farmed north of Baileyville. Her husband, "Tony" survives of the home.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville, the Altar Sodality, the church council, taught religious education to second graders and was co-ordinator of
religious education at Sacred Heart. She also was a member of the Benedictine Oblates.
Besides her husband, she is survived by three sons, Gary Hulsing and Francis Hulsing, both of Baileyville, and Donald Hulsing of Axtell, KS; three daughters, Mary Doris Strathman of Seneca, Judy Stredicke of Puyallup, WA, and Nancy Siess of Topeka; three brothers, Lambert Haug of Abilene, KS, Ernest Haug of Seneca, and William Haug, Jr. of Topeka; two sisters, Bernice Nordhus and Patricia Stallbaumer, both of Seneca; two stepbrothers, Raymond Hunninghake of Seneca and Leonard Hunninghake of Baileyville; 37 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Arlene Gudenkauf on May 27, 1991 and Annette Feldkamp on July 5, 2000.
The mass of Christian burial will be 11 A.M. Monday at Sacred Heart Church at Baileyville. The burial will be in the church cemetery. She will lie in state after 3 P.M. Saturday at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Rosaries will be prayed at the Lauer Funeral Home at 7 P.M. Saturday and at 2 and 7 P.M. Sunday.
Memorials may be given for Sacred Heart Church or for the Arlene Gudenkauf Scholarship Fund and sent in care of the family.

Dorothy R. Huninghake

Dorothy R. Huninghake, 90, of Seneca, Kansas, died on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at Life Care Center of Seneca, where she had been a resident since October 2009.
Dorothy Rose Huninghake was born on December 9, 1920, the daughter of William and Anna Blocker Bergman. She grew up in the St. Benedict community and graduated from St. Mary's High School in St. Benedict in 1939. She worked in the Bergman family store until she married.
Dorothy married Joseph C. Huninghake on September 5, 1945 at St. Mary’s Church in St. Benedict. They lived on a farm east of Seneca until 1963, when they moved to Seneca. Joe preceded her in death on May 22, 1981.
Dorothy enjoyed playing cards, gardening, singing in the church and having visitors and being a devoted mother and grandmother.
She was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church and the Merry Makers Garden Club in Seneca.
She is survived by her children, Connie (Ced) Woodard of Parker, Colorado, Bill (Linda) Huninghake of Overland Park, Kansas, Steve (Ruth) Huninghake of Topeka, Brenda Haya of Topeka, Glenda (Lyle) Haverkamp of Topeka, and Tim Huninghake of Seneca; two sisters, Cyrilla Sudbeck of Seneca and Rita Wichman of Topeka; a brother, Melvin Bergman of St. Benedict; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband Joe she was preceded in death by her brother, Callussis Bergman; and a sister, Raphaela Haverkamp.
Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM Friday, April 15, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 AM Saturday, April 16, at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Memorials may be given in Dorothy's memory for Sts. Peter & Paul, and sent in care of the family.
