Donald F. Nelson

Donald F. Nelson, 63, of San Jose, CA, died February 10, 2003, at a San Jose hospital.
He was born March 11, 1939, at Vliets, KS, the son of Francis “Corkey” and Ruth Olsen Cunningham. He moved with his mother to San Jose where he graduated from San Jose High School. Following high school, he joined the US Navy and served for four years. He worked for over 25 years at the Ford plant in San Jose as an assembler.
Survivors are four aunts, Theresa “Terry” Linville and Mary Hughes, both of Seneca, KS, Rose Norvell of Independence, MO, and Freda Files of Irvine, CA; and his step mother, Dorrie Cunningham of Topeka, KS.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Inurnment graveside services will be 10 A.M. Monday, March 24, at Sts. Peter & PaulCemeteryin Seneca, Kansas.
Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca is in charge of arrangements.

Jean A. Newton

Jean A. Newton, 72, of Kansas City, MO, died Tuesday, December 20, 2005, at Research Hospital in Kansas City.
She was born January 9, 1933 at Axtell, KS, the daughter of Eugene J. and Agatha Shaughnessy Madden. They lived in Axtell where she attended St. Michael’s School. After her father died on June 14, 1944, she moved with her mother to Seneca where she graduated from Sts. Peter & Paul High School in 1951. In 1954 the family moved to Kansas City, MO. Later she was employed by the Dunham Bus Service as a monitor.
She was a member of St. Matthew the Apostle Church in Grandview, MO.
Jean’s hobbies were sewing and collecting antiques.
Survivors are three sons, Harold Newton, Harrisonville, MO, Craig Newton, Jr., Lynn Valley, KS, and Tim Nickerson, Lowry City, MO; two daughters, Eugenie Tyburski, Epharta, PA and Renee Newton, Berwick, PA; two sisters, Patricia Fields, Lee Summit, MO and Vera Gross, Kansas City, MO; and seven grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Delores Madden.
The mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 A.M. Monday, December 26 at St. Michael’s Church at Axtell. She will lie in state at the church for an hour preceding the mass. The rosary will also be prayed at the church preceding the mass.
Memorial contributions may be given for the American Cancer Society and sent in care of the family.

Albert H. Niehues

Albert H. Niehues, 89, of Goff, died just before midnight Wednesday evening, February 16, 2005 at his home southeast of Kelly, KS. He had been in failing health for several years after suffering a stroke in 1993.
He was born May 13, 1915, on the family homestead southeast of Kelly, the son of Bernard, Sr. and Mary Knipper Niehues. He attended St. Bede’s School at Kelly, helped on the family farm, and later farmed east of Kelly.
On May 4, 1943, he married Dolores Grollmes at St. Bede’s Church. They lived on the farm east of Kelly until the spring of 1944 when they moved to their present farm southeast of Kelly. His family had cared for him in their home during his long illness.
He was a member of St. Bede’s Church were he had served on the church committee. He also served on the Kelly School Board, District #21 in the early 1960s. Albert loved farming. They raised cattle and hogs, and operated a dairy.
Survivors are his wife Dolores of the home; five sons, Glen of Wetmore, and Wayne, Max, Marvin and Thomas, all of Goff; two daughters, Mary Koch of Centralia and Doris Haug of Vermillion; two brothers, Edwin Niehues of Goff and Robert Niehues, Sr. of Seneca; five sisters, Sr. Richardis Niehues, OSB of Atchison, Margaret Boeckman of Onaga, Antoinette Hermesch of Seneca, Josepha Altenhofen of Kelly, and Evelyn Hutfles of Topeka; and 36 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Bernard “Ben”, Jr., John J., and George F.; and four sisters, Agnes Niehues, an infant, Alma Haverkamp, Anna Niehues and Erma Niehues.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday at St. Bede's Church at Kelly. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The rosary will be prayed at 2 and 7 PM Friday at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca, where he will lie in state after 8:30 AM Friday.
Memorials may be given for St. Bede’sCemeteryand sent in care of the family.

Anna M. Niehues

Anna M. Niehues, 88, of Rt. 2, Goff, Kansas, died Monday, April 30, 2001, at the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. She was transferred there from the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital on Sunday. She had cancer.
She was born May 26, 1912, the daughter of Bernard, Sr. and Mary Knipper Niehues, on the Niehues homestead southeast of Kelly, Kansas. She grew up there and attended St. Bede's School at Kelly. One of fifteen children, she was like a mother to the younger children in the family. As a young woman, she stayed in the home of Mary and Gertrude Wempe in Seneca where she learned to be a seamstress. Besides sewing, she worked in local homes helping to care for families.
Later she cared for her elderly parents, and following their deaths continued to make her home with her brother, George, and sister, Erma, on the Niehues homestead. Last May she fractured her leg and has been in ill health since that time. She had also been in the Sabetha Hospital and Crestview Manor in Seneca.
She was a member of St. Bede's Church and the St. Ann's Altar Society at the church in Kelly.
Survivors are four brothers, Albert Niehues, Edwin Niehues, and George Niehues all of Goff, and Robert Niehues of Seneca; six sisters, Sr. M. Richardis, O.S.B. of Atchison, Kansas, Margaret Boeckman of Onaga, Kansas, Antionette Hermesch of Seneca, Josepha Altenhofen of Kelly, Evelyn Hutfles of Netawaka, Kansas, and Erma Niehues of Goff.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Bernard "Ben" Niehues, Jr., and John J. Niehues, two sisters, Agnes Niehues and Alma Haverkamp.
The mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 A.M. Thursday at St. Bede's Church at Kelly. The burial will be in the church cemetery. The rosary will be prayed at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca on Wednesday at 2 P.M. and 7 P.M She will lie in state at the Funeral Home after 8:30 A.M. Wednesday.
Memorials may be given for St. Bede'sCemeteryand sent in care of the family.

Bernadine M. Niehues

Bernadine M. Niehues, 82, of Kelly, KS, died Sunday evening, February 18, 2007 at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka, due to complications after heart surgery. In the days before her death, she felt blessed to be surrounded by her endeared sibling, nieces, and nephews reminiscing about “old times” and praying for her recovery.
She was born on August 12, 1924 on a farm southeast of Kelly, the daughter of Frank and Elizabeth Steinlage Niehues. She grew up there, and attended St. Bede's School at Kelly. She lived with her brother and sister on the family farm for all of her life, taking care of the home and helping on the farm. She selflessly took care of her invalid mother and her father until their deaths. She was a superior baker who made lovely angel food cakes from scratch, countless loaves of bread, and delicious cookies. Her cream pies were requested at all family and church functions. Bernadine loved to garden and had a large plot each year. She was a gifted seamstress, who quilted and did embroidery and fancy handwork. She was simply a devoted and tireless homemaker.
Bernadine was very civic minded and liked to do for others; she contributed significantly to the lives of all she knew. She was a member of St. Bede's Church, taught and coordinated CCD classes at St. Bede’s, and was a member of St. Ann's Altar Society at the church in Kelly. She served on the Nemaha-Marshall Regional Council and St. Isador’s Celebration Committee. She helped teach the mentally handicapped at Sts. Peter & Paul’s Day Care Center. Bernadine also worked on the Annual Blood Drives and United Charity Drives.
Survivors are her brother Ferdinand of Goff; and four sisters, Rita Niehues of Goff, Norbertine Miller and Frances Rottinghaus of Seneca, and Florence Hermesch of Rogersville, MO.
She was preceded in death by her brother Herbert on June 26, 2000 and a two-year-old sister, Anita, on August 27, 1934.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 A.M. Friday at St. Bede's Church at Kelly. The burial will be in the church cemetery. Rosaries will be prayed at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca on Thursday at 2 P.M. and at 7 P.M.
Memorial beneficiaries will be designated later; memorials may be sent in care of the family.

Carson J. Niehues

Carson John Niehues, son of Lauren Niehues of Manhattan, KS, died Tuesday, December 12, 2006.
Carson was born in Manhattan this year on July 12, 2006. Survivors besides his mother include his grandparents Roy and Lynn Geiger Niehues of Corning; great-grandmother Jean Niehues, Corning; uncle and godfather Taylor Niehues of Manhattan, and many great and great-great aunts and uncles, and cousins in Kansas and Illinois.
He was preceded in death by grandparents Herbert Niehues, and John and Elizabeth Singer Gieger.
The family will hold vigil at Saint Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly from 3 to 8 pm on Friday; there will be a rosary at 7 pm that night at the church. Father Carasala will conduct a Mass of the Angels at 10 am on Saturday at St. Bede’s. There will be a private internment at St. Bede’sCemeteryafter the mass.
The family requests that no flowers be sent and have yet to designate a memorial.

Dolores A. "Peg" Niehues

Dolores A. “Peg” Niehues, 86, of Goff, KS, died Wednesday, January 11, 2006, at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.
She was born September 27, 1919, on a farm north of Centralia, the daughter of Henry A. and Clara Reinecke Grollmes. Her mother died in a flu epidemic when she was about two years old. She grew up on the farm and attended Sherman School near her home. She did domestic work and helped on the family farm before her marriage
On May 4, 1943 she married Albert H. Niehues at St. Bede’s Church. They lived on a farm east of Kelly until the spring of 1944 when they moved to their farm southeast of Kelly. They celebrated their 50th and 60th wedding anniversaries. She took care of her husband, Albert, for many years while he was in ill health. He preceded her in death on February 16, 2005.
She was a member of St. Bede’s Church and the Altar Society at the Church. Peg enjoyed gardening, flowers, sewing, baking, and collecting recipes.
Survivors are five sons, Glen, of Wetmore, Wayne, Max, Marvin, and Thomas, all of Goff; two daughters, Mary Koch of Centralia and Doris Haug of Vermillion; 36 grandchildren; and 39 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Andrew Grollmes, and four sisters, Elizabeth Graney, Mary Smith, Katherine Duryea, and Leona “Bobbie” Grollmes.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday at St. Bede’s Church in Kelly. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Rosary will be prayed at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca on Friday at 2 and 7 P.M.
Memorial contributions may be given for St. Bede’sCemeteryand sent in care of the family.
