Obituary: Luther Emanuel Johnson was born on November 3, 1957 at Omaha, NE. He passed away Friday, December 2, 2005 at his home in Manhattan at the age of 48.
He joined the family of Asoler and Thomas Henderson of Junction City, KS at a very young age becoming a permanent part of the family. He was preceded in death by Asoler Henderson (MaDear).
He is survived by his wife, Kelly Sue (Weighous) Johnson, of the home; a son, Isaiah Johnson, of the home; and two brothers, Charles Johnson, Manhattan and Richard Johnson, Ogden, KS. Members of his adopted family include Verlin L. Tarver, Chris Waldo and Ola Womack, all of Junction City, along with many other cousins, aunts and uncles.
Luther graduated from Junction City High School in 1977 and shortly afterwards served four years in the U.S. Army receiving an honorable discharge. He found Christ at a very young age and was a member of the College Heights Baptist Church.
Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be at 6:00 p.m., Thursday, December 8, 2005 in the College Heights Baptist Church, 2320 Anderson Ave., Manhattan with Pastor Tim Gotchey of the College Heights Baptist Church and Pastor Dennis Olney from the Manhattan Baptist Church officiating. Obituary: JC Birdsong, 78, Manhattan, KS passed away Sunday, November 27, 2005 at his home.
He was born to Armetia and JD Birdsong on October 2, 1927 at Clarksville, TX. They both preceded him in death.
Mr. Birdsong was in the U.S. Army from 1947 until 1954 and worked for the Civil Service at Ft. Riley from 1954 until his retirement in January 1986. He was a devout member of the Pilgrim Baptist Church, Manhattan and a member of Pearce-Keller American Legion Post No. 17.
He is survived by his wife, Almajean, of the home, which he was joined in union with for 51 glorious years.
Other survivors include four sons, Dalbert Kaiser and Kelvin Birdsong, both of Manhattan, Robert Birdsong, Nashville, TN and Kenneth Birdsong, Natchez, MS; four daughters, Cynthia Artis and Constance Birdsong, both of Manhattan, Armetia Birdsong, Chicago, IL and Betty Mitchell, Montgomery, AL; three grandchildren, whom he helped raise, LaTrease Birdsong, Dallas, TX, Tychelle Vassol and Audrey Artis, both of Manhattan and 11 other grandchildren; two great grandchildren, De’Shon and DaTasia Vassol, Manhattan and five other great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Birdsong was preceded in death by a daughter, Audrey Birdsong in January 1969.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, December 2, 2005 in the Pilgrim Baptist Church, Manhattan. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan. Obituary: Jonathan Michael Wood, 25, Manhattan, KS passed away Tuesday, November 15, 2005 at his home.
He was born December 11, 1979 at Willingboro, NJ, the son of Dennis J. Wood and Cathryn Hodgeman Wood. He lived in the Manhattan area since early childhood attended the local schools.
He worked as a carpenter and was attending at Kansas State University majoring in agriculture.
He is survived by his mother, Cathy Klobnak, Montgomery, AL; his father, Dennis Wood, Florence, SC; two brothers, Christopher Wood, Winfield, KS and Nathan Wood, Canon City, CO; and a half brother, Uriah Wood, Helena, MT.

Obituary: Laura H. Rieke, a long time resident of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away Monday, November 7, 2005 at Meadowlark Hills in Manhattan, Kansas. She was 95.
She was born Laura Hyson McClain in Fulton, Kentucky, August 30, 1910, the daughter of Abby McClain and Audie Hill Williams McClain. The oldest of six children, she moved with her family to Fort Scott, Kansas, at the age of 12 and graduated from Fort Scott High School. She married Earl Edward Rieke on March 25, 1932, and went with him to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where she lived until the age of 92, when she moved to Manhattan, Kansas. Earl, who was an employee of the Cedar Rapids Gazette for 38 years, preceded her in death in 1997.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, James Curtis and Charles Wesley McClain, and a sister, Lucille Flagg.
She is survived by a daughter, Linda Rieke Johnson and her husband, Roger of Manhattan; two granddaughters, Laura Mary Johnson of Durham, North Carolina and Sarah Ellen Johnson, of Lawrence, Kansas; two brothers, Albert C. McClain and wife Maxine of Bella Vista, Arkansas and William J. McClain and wife Wilma of San Diego, California.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church-Church of the Brethren in Cedar Rapids since 1933. She was also a member of PEO Chapter JI in Cedar Rapids.
During the war years, she worked as a long-distance operator for Southwestern Bell. After that, she was a full-time homemaker and volunteer for many organizations. She taught Sunday school for 15 years, served as a Camp Fire leader, and was active in the PAT and church women’s groups.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, November 13, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. in the Community Room at Meadowlark Hills. Inurnment will be held at Cedar Memorial Cemetery in Cedar Rapids at a later date.

Obituary: Ronald R. Nash, 37, resident of El Dorado, KS, passed away Tuesday, October 25, 2005 in the Susan B. Allen Hospital.
He was born on February 4, 1968 at Detroit, MI, the son of Roosevelt Nash and Dolores Redmond Nash. He spent his early years in Detroit and later Ft. Sill, OK. He had been a resident of Kansas since 1982. He had worked in the meat packing industry, welder by trade, and had various other talents.
He was united in marriage to Apryle L. Nash on December 31, 2003 at Hutchinson, KS. She survives of Kansas City, MO.
Survivors other than his parents include his children, Katherine Johnson, Federal Way, WA, Donovan Nash, Topeka, KS, Stormi and Eboni Nash, Eads, CO; two sisters and brother, Vanikol Nash, Atlanta, GA, Michael Nash, Salina and Meschell Nash, Manhattan; several aunts and uncles; one sister-in-law, Yanely Ibarra Nash; four nephews; three nieces; and a host of cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 5, 2005 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan. Burial will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

Obituary: Ronald D. Swart, 52, Manhattan, KS passed away Tuesday, October 25, 2005 at his home after an extended illness.
He was born August 4, 1953 at Manhattan, the son of Kenneth L. Swart and Loretta J. Giles Swart. He grew up in Manhattan, where he attended the local schools and was a graduate of the Manhattan High School. He had also attended the Goodland Technical College and was a graduate of the Topeka Technical College.
For several years, Ron worked in the auto body departments of the Ed Bozarth Dealership and MAACO in Topeka. He spent many years in the Kansas Correctional Department, as a guard, at the facilities in Norton, Stockton and El Dorado. He retired in 2002.
He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth L. Swart in 1994.
Ron is survived by a daughter, Montana L. Swart, Austin, TX; his mother, Loretta J. Swart, Manhattan; four brothers, Kenneth W. Swart, Topeka, Robert D. Swart, Mitchell, SD and William E. Swart and Rodney L. Swart, both of Manhattan; and one sister, Janice Pride, Manhattan.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 28, 2005 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan. Burial will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

Obituary: Bonnie B. Hansen, 81, Manhattan, KS passed away Wednesday, October 19, 2005 in the Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.
She was born August 4, 1924 at Clay Center, KS, the daughter of Benjamin Reed and Frances Misner Reed. She grew up in Clay Center, where she attended the local public schools and was a 1942 graduate of the Clay County Community High School.
She was united in marriage to Harvey Bungard in 1942 at Clay Center. He preceded her in death in March 1945. She was later married to Arthur L. Hansen on October 12, 1946 at Lawrence, KS. He passed away September 10, 1988.
Because of her husband’s military career, Mrs. Hansen lived in numerous locations throughout the world until moving to Ft. Riley in 1959. She had been a Manhattan resident since 1961.
She was a homemaker and dedicated herself to the raising of her eight children. She was a member of the Crestview Christian Church, Manhattan and was active in the Ashland Bottoms EHU and helped with the Deep Creek 4-H Club, teaching knitting and crocheting. She loved to travel, which included a Mission trip to Zimbabwe, Africa at the age of 76.
In addition to her husbands, Mrs. Hansen was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Lee Reed; and one sister, Dorothy Kendrick.
Survivors include a son, the Rev. Dr. John E. Bungard, and his wife, Karina, Mililani, HI; seven daughters, Janice Bungard, Kansas City, MO, Maureen Hugunin, and her husband, Rod, Kingman, AZ, Kathleen Martinez, and her husband, Tony, Joshua, TX, Connie Mitchell, and her husband, John, Pelzer, SC, Nancy Burns, and her husband, Ray, Riley, KS and Pamela Phinney and her husband, Jim and Bonnie Jean Wellmeier, and her husband, Harold, all of Manhattan; three sisters, Ruby DeRossett, Waco, TX, Dolores Fulton, Clay Center, KS and Colleen Geiger, Topeka, KS; 20 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 24, 2005 in the Crestview Christian Church with Pastor Devin Wendt officiating. Burial will follow in the Ft. Riley Cemetery, Ft. Riley, KS.
