Elmer Schraad

Elmer L. Schraad, 69, of Seneca, Kansas, died Saturday evening, June 29, 2002, at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka, Kansas.
He was born July 16, 1932, the son of August and Anna Osterhus Schraad on a farm northeast of St. Benedict. He grew up there, graduated from St. Mary's Grade School in 1946, and from St. Benedict High School in 1950. He played on the St. Benedict baseball team.
As a young man he worked for the Davey Tree Service in Kansas City, Kansas. In October of 1955 he was inducted into the US Army. He served in Germany as a forward radio observer and was recognized with an award for expert rifle marksman. He played baseball while he was in Germany and was later asked to play minor league baseball.
After his discharge, he returned to Seneca where he began employment with Todd Tractor as an office manager. He worked there 37 years. He also helped his brother, Gene, farm while he was working fulltime. In May 1993 a brain aneurysm made early retirement necessary. In 1998 he was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer.
He was married to Kathleen Haverkamp on April 24, 1958, at Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville. They always lived in Seneca, and she survives of the home.
He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church, where he sang in the choir and was a lay minister, the St. Joseph's Society at the church, the Knights of Columbus #1769, the Ponce de Leon Chapter of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, the Seneca Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Business Association. He was a lifetime member of the Seneca Memorial Post # 7458 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, where he served as a color guard for parades and funerals. He served as board of the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca during the 1990's. He sang in the area choir that presents an annual Christmas cantata, and in earlier years coached Little League Baseball.
Survivors besides his wife, Kathleen, are three sons, Stephen Schraad of Council Grove, Kansas, Alan Schraad of Overland Park, Kansas, and Craig Schraad of Topeka; a daughter, Janell Linnemann of Wamego, Kansas; two brothers, Francis Schraad and Eugene Schraad, both of Seneca; two sisters, Rita Wempe of Seneca and Helen Cook of Kansas City, Kansas; and twelve grandchildren.
The mass of Christian burial will be 10 A.M. Tuesday at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. The burial will be in the church cemetery, with full military honors. The rosary will be prayed by the Knights of Columbus at 2 P.M. Monday and a vigil prayer service will be offered at 7 P.M. Sunday and Monday at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.
Memorial contributions may be given to Sts. Peter & Paul School in Seneca and sent in care of the family.

B. Theodore "Ted" Schultejans

B. Theodore "Ted" Schultejans, 86, of Corning, Kansas, died Tuesday, November 14, 2000, at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka.
He was born July 24, 1914, on a farm south of Kelly, Kansas, the son of Bernard and Caroline Klunenberg Schultejans. He grew up there and attended St. Bede's School at Kelly. He worked on the family farm and helped his dad in the trucking business.
On April 19, 1944, he married Eleanor Hermesch at St. Bede's Church at Kelly. She survives of the home. They lived and farmed north of Corning where Ted was a farmer and a stockman. He continued to help his sons on the farm.
He was a member of St. Bede's Church, the St. Joseph Society, and served on the church committee at Kelly. He was a member of the Farmer's Union for 70 years, a member of the Nemaha County Co-op Board, and the Seneca Hospital Board. Ted loved to play cards, enjoyed reading and keeping up on world events. He liked polka music, and played harmonica and accordian.
Besides his wife, Eleanor, he is survived by two sons, Jerry Schultejans and Jim Schultejans both of Corning; five daughters, Mary Jane Schmitz of Baileyville, KS, RoseAnn Hornbaker and Cathy Carter, both of Topeka, Linda Hyland and Emma Kientz, both of Bixby, OK; a brother Clarence Schultejans of Kelly, KS; two sisters, Bernadine Wessel of Seneca, KS, and Anna Hasenkamp of Topeka; 27 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and four step grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Bernard in 1944, in World War II, Edwin in 1972, Albert in 1977, and a sister, Mary in 1931.
The mass of Christian burial will be 10 A.M. Saturday at St. Bede's Church at Kelly. The burial will be in the church cemetery. The rosary will be prayed at 8 P.M. Thursday and on Friday at 2 and 7 P.M. at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca, KS.
Memorials may be given for St. Bede's Church, the Corning Fire Department, or the Seneca EMT Association and sent in care of the family.

Clarence Schultejans

Clarence H. Schultejans, 79, of Seneca, Kansas, died Friday, March 28, 2014, at the Veterans’ Eastern Kansas Health Care Hospital in Topeka.
He was born July 4, 1934, on a farm south of Kelly, Kansas, to Bernard and Caroline Klunenberg Schultejans. He attended St. Bede's School in Kelly. He worked on the family farm and helped his Dad in the trucking business.
He joined the United States Army on November 15, 1955 and was discharged on August 26, 1957
On April 27, 1963, he married Billie Womack at Holy Name Catholic Church in Topeka. She survives of the home. The coupled lived and farmed South of Kelly, where Clarence was a farmer and a stockman. In later years, he continued to help his son on the farm. He also worked for Koch and Company and for the Nemaha County Coop. Clarence retired in 2000; and in 2002 they moved in to Seneca.
Clarence had many hobbies, he enjoyed fishing, woodworking, hunting, gardening, listening to polka music and watch wrestling on television.
He was a member of St. Bede's Church in Kelly, the St. Joseph Society at the church, and he served on the Parish Council. He was on the board for St. Benedict Mutual.
Besides his wife Billie, he is survived by his children, Mike (Jennifer) Schultejans of Silver Lake, Kansas, Teresa (Mark) Kolterman of Onaga, Janet (Steven) Blair of Topeka, and Tom (Mary Kay) Schultejans of Kelly; a sister, Anna Hasenkamp of Topeka; a sister in law, Eleanor Schultejans of Anamosa, Iowa; 7 grandsons and 2 granddaughters.
He was preceded in death a daughter, Mary Kay in 1967; by four brothers, Bernard in 1944 (in World War II), Edwin in 1972, Albert in July 22, 1977 and Ted on November 14, 2000; and two sisters, Mary C. Schultejans on May 30, 1931 and Bernadine Wessel on August 8, 2010.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, April 1st at St. Bede's Church in Kelly. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM on Monday at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.
Memorials may be given for Disabled Veterans Association or St. Bede's Cemetery, and sent in care of the family.

Eleanor A. Schultejans

Eleanor A. Schultejans, 87, of Corning, KS, died late morning Sunday, July 25, 2010, surrounded by her family, at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka.
She was born on May 23, 1923, on a farm southeast of Kelly, KS, the daughter of Joseph and Emma Boeckman Hermesch. She grew up in the Kelly community and attended St. Bede's School there.
On April 19, 1944, she married B. Theodore “Ted” Schultejans at St. Bede's Catholic Church in Kelly. They lived north of Corning, where the couple farmed, raised stock and celebrated 56 years of marriage.
She was a member of St. Bede's Church and St. Ann’s Altar Society in Kelly and the American Legion Auxiliary of Corning. Eleanor was a homemaker and a loving mother. She loved playing cards, quilting, sewing, gardening, polka music and spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by two sons, Jerry (Glenda) Schultejans and Jim (Diane) Schultejans, both of Corning; five daughters, Mary Jane (Regis) Schmitz of Baileyville, RoseAnn (Stan) Hornbaker Lawrence, Linda (George) Hyland of Bixby, OK, Emma (Bryan) Kientz of Broken Arrow, OK and Kathy (Chuck) Carter of Topeka; a brother, Henry Hermesch of Seneca; a sister, Alfreda Kramer of Corning; a sister-in-law, Connie Hermesch of Seneca; 27 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ted on November 14, 2000; four brothers, George, Adolph, Leo, and Fredolin Hermesch; and three sisters, Mary Hermesch, Florence Bergman, and Rose Glissman.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 AM on Wednesday, July 28, at St. Bede's Church in Kelly. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM Tuesday, July 27, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.

Harry R. Schuneman

Harry R. Schuneman, 92, of Seneca, Kansas, died Sunday, March 16, 2003, at a Seneca Care Home. He had been a resident there since October 29, 1994.
He was born February 2, 1911, in the Ford Community southeast of Seneca, the son of Louis E. and Alvina Hansz Schuneman. He attended the Ford School and helped on the family farm. While he was farming, he took a correspondence course in diesel mechanics. This course helped him in getting a job with the Southern Pacific Railroad in Los Angeles, CA. After moving to Los Angeles in 1936 at age 25, he decided to get his high school education. For three years, he worked nights and attended high school during the day and graduated from Lost Angeles High School. He worked as an engineer for the railroad until his retirement in 1976.
On July 26, 1947, he married Roberta Jesse Kidd, of Portland, Oregon, in Clark Country, Nevada. They lived in Los Angeles. In February of 1976 they both retired and moved to South Pasadena, California. Shortly after moving to South Pasadena, his wife Roberta became ill and died September 15, 1976. After his wife’s death, Harry traveled extensively in the United States and throughout the world. In 1993 he had a stroke and moved to a care home, and then decided to move back to Seneca to be near his family.
Harry did extensive volunteer work. His work group at Southern Pacific Railroad received a letter from President Franklin Roosevelt commending them for their efforts during World War II.
Survivors are a stepson, Daniel Kidd of Reno, Nevada; a sister Grace Ford of Osage City, Kansas; and two step-grandchildren, nieces and nepnews.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Clarence, Willis, Earl, and Paul Schuneman and three sisters, Helen Hayward, Alice Power, and Frances Schuneman.
Inurnment will be beside his wife in Portland Memorial Cemetery, Portland, Oregon.
Memorials may be given for the FordCemeteryand sent in care of Connie Claycamp, Rt. 3, Seneca, Kansas 66538.
Lauer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Edna Jane Schweitzer

Edna Jane Schweitzer, 81, Seneca, formerly of Goff died Monday, December 20, 2004, at Life Care Center in Seneca.
Jane, as she preferred to be called, was born January 6, 1923, in San Diego, CA, the daughter of Roy and Grace Heath Michael. She graduated from Lakeside Grammar School, Lakeside, CA and attended Grossmont High School, Lemesa, CA for two years.
On January 22, 1942, she married Thomas Bemis. They were divorced in 1958. While she was visiting her mother who had moved to Topeka, she met Harold Schweitzer. They were married December 12, 1972. They lived in Topeka before relocating to Goff in 1982 when Harold retired. They both entered Life Care Center in Seneca on July 21, 1998, due to their failing health.
She attended the Goff United Methodist Church.
Survivors are her husband, Harold Schweitzer of Life Care Center; a son, Michael Bemis, Reading, CA; a step-son Bill Schweitzer, Hoyt; a daughter, Sharon Deiranieh, Chula Vista, CA; and grandchildren.
Besides her parents and a brother, Edward, she was preceded in death by a son, Jim Bemis, in January of 1998.
Memorial services will be 2 P.M. Thursday at Life Care Center. Inurnment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Goff. Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca is in charge of arrangements.
