Goldie M. Shump
Goldie M. Shump, 87, Sabetha, KS, died Monday, April 04, 2005, at the Sabetha Manor Skilled Nursing Center where she had been a resident since July 1999.
Goldie Mary Stauffer was born March 4, 1918, on a farm near Oneida, KS, the daughter of Albrecht and Rosa Widmer Stauffer. She grew up there, attended a rural school, and helped on the family farm. In the late 1930s she moved to California and worked there as a florist before returning to Kansas.
She married
Karl Shump June 1, 1944 at Sabetha. They lived in Sabetha where they had a trucking business, and owed and operated Shump’s Liquor Store for 28 years. Her husband died June 10, 1979.
She attended Sacred Heart Church in Sabetha. Goldie enjoyed playing golf. She also quilted and took good care of her yard and flowers.
Survivors are three sons, Karl Shump, Jr., Durham, NH, Donald Shump, Burbank, CA, and William Shump, Newton, IA; and two grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Ruben Stauffer, and four sisters, Rosena Stauffer, Lena Stauffer, Metta Hochstetler, and Liseta Crown..
Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Friday at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. The family will meet with friends for a half hour preceding the services. The burial will be in Sts. Peter & PaulCemeteryin Seneca. She will lie in state after 8:30 A.M. on Thursday at the funeral home.

Vollie A. Shump
Vollie A. Shump, 90, of Seneca, died Thursday, August 28, 2003, shortly after arrival at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.
He was born October 27, 1912, on a farm northeast of Kelly, the son of Frank and Rose Metzger Shump. He attended Sunny Knoll School. In 1927 the family moved to a farm east of Seneca.
On April 12, 1937, he married
Emma Vondenkamp at Sacred Heart Church in Sabetha. They lived and farmed southeast of Seneca. During the first years of their marriage, he worked at the Farmer’s Elevator in Seneca and later had livestock and a dairy. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1987. Emma preceded him in death on February 13, 1997.
He as a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church, the St. Joseph Society, and the Knights of Columbus for over 50 years, all at Seneca. Vollie had a great love for his family. He was an avid bingo player, card player and went to his farm twice a day.
Survivors are four sons, Gary, South Fork, CO, Harold, James, and Daniel, of Seneca; a daughter, Darlene Kuhlman, of Seneca; two brothers, Lawrence, Sabetha and Frank, Battle Creek, MI; two sisters, Laurina Heckel, Seal Beach, CA and Rose Hubbard, Lakewood, CA; eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Besides his wife he was preceded in death by four brothers, August, Henry, Raphael, and Karl Shump, and two sisters, Amelia Schneider and Pauline Surmeier.
Mass of Christian burial will be 11 A.M. Monday at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. The burial will be in the church cemetery. The rosary will be prayed at 7 P.M. Saturday by the Knights of Columbus and a prayer service will be conducted at 2 P.M. Sunday at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. He will lie in state at the funeral home after 4 P.M. Saturday.
Memorials may be given for the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital or for the Seneca E.M.T. Association and sent in care of the family.
Beatrice M. Skoch
Beatrice M. Skoch, 91, of Sabetha, KS, formerly of Powhattan and Fairview, died early Monday morning, February 6, 2012, at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha.
Beatrice was born on June 13, 1920 on a farm west of Seneca, the oldest child of Leo and Catherine Walk Nolte. She attended Prairie View School, graduating from 8th grade. After graduation, she helped with housework and childcare at home and with various neighbors. She also worked at a café in Seneca.
She married
Raymond J. Skoch on May 20, 1941 at Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville. The couple farmed and raised stock in the Powhattan area since 1947. Raymond and Beatrice celebrated 50 years of marriage before Ray’s death on December 6, 1991.
Beatrice was a member of St. Augustine Church in Fidelity and was a member and past officer of St. Augustine Altar Society. She was a member of the LN (Loyal Neighbor) Club and the Brown County Kansas Farm Bureau. She was a generous and hospitable homemaker who enjoyed cooking and making pies.
She is survived by three daughters, Donna (Larry) Beer of Shawnee, Evelyn (Larry) Lierz of Fairview and Rebecca Skoch of St. Joseph, MO; two sons, Leroy (Janice) Skoch of St. Louis, MO and Gene (Judy) Skoch of St. Joseph, MO; siblings, Andrew Nolte of Topeka, KS, Anna Correa of Knob Noster, MO and Irene Myers of Heyburn, ID; 12 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband Ray, she was preceded in death by her grandson Bradley Beer on March 7, 2001; her father Leo Nolte on June 6, 1974; her mother Catherine Nolte on February 8, 1984; five brothers, Gerard Nolte on March 29, 2011, Melvin Nolte on November 6, 2005, Richard Nolte on April 3, 2003, Norbert Nolte on December 15, 1991 and Donald Nolte on August 9, 1984; and three sisters, Elda Mae Foote on July 24, 2010, Rosann Fox on June 9, 2007 and an infant sister, Gladys Mae Nolte.
Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 AM Friday, February 10, at St. Augustine’s Church in Fidelity. Burial will be in Sacred HeartCemeteryin Baileyville. A rosary will be prayed at 7 PM Thursday, February 9, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.

Elmer J. Skoch
Elmer J. Skoch, 85, retired farmer and stockman, of Seneca, Kansas, died early Saturday morning, March 10, 2007 at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka.
He was born on a farm northwest of St. Benedict on February 23, 1922, the son of Edward J. and Rose Wichman Skoch. He attended the Seneca Grade School, and graduated from Seneca Public High School. After graduation, he began working on the family farm, which would be his lifelong work until retirement.
On April 26, 1945, he married
Mary Elizabeth Buessing at Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville. They lived and worked the family farm until they retired to Seneca in November of 1982. They raised five daughters.
After retirement from the farm, Elmer worked part time for Nemaha County Co-Op, Rural Water District #3, Ray’s Apple Mart, and the Conoco gas station.
Elmer was a member of St. Mary's Church in St. Benedict, where he had served on the church council and the restoration committee. He was also a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Seneca, a Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, and a Fourth Degree member of Ponce De Leon Assembly of Seneca. Elmer also served on the Nemaha County Co-Op Board from 1961-1975. His hobbies were playing cards and woodworking.
Survivors are his wife Mary of the home; five daughters, Betty Schraad of Seneca, Judy Osterhaus of Axtell, Cathy Farrell of Frankfort, Patty Hasenkamp of Burchard, Nebraska, and Barb Bille of Bonner Springs; two sisters, Esther Enneking of Centralia and Eleanor Schultejans of Anamosa, Iowa; 17 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, who also died at the same age of 85 and on the same date 25 years ago, March 10, 1982; and by his mother, who died on January 9, 1983. He was also preceded in death by great-granddaughter Ariel E. Esslinger and great-great-granddaughter Shawna Brook Esslinger, who were both lost in a car accident on January 26, 2007.
Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM Monday, March 12, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, March 13, at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mary E. Skoch
Mary Elizabeth Buessing Skoch, 89, Seneca died Monday morning, November 24, 2014 at Life Care Center in Seneca.
Mary was born on April 26, 1925 at home, to Barney and Elizabeth Sextro Buessing. She attended school in Baileyville, graduating from the 8th Grade.
On April 26, 1945, she married
Elmer John Skoch at Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville. They lived and worked the family farm until they retired to Seneca in November of 1988. Mary worked at Conoco Gas Station and Knights of Columbus Club Room, where she was a “Star” pie baker.
She was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Seneca and St. Ann’s Altar Society. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren and great- grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Her pride and joy was her flowers and yard.
She is survived by her five daughters, Betty (Gene) Schraad of Seneca, Judy (Jerry) Osterhaus of Seneca, Cathy (John) Farrell of Frankfort, Patty (Jim) Hasenkamp of Burchard, Nebraska, and Barb (Jim) Bille of Bonner Springs; siblings;17 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 8 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Elmer on March 10, 2007; a grand-daughter, Karen Esslinger on October 24, 2012; and great-granddaughter, Ariel E. Esslinger and great-great-granddaughter, Shawna Brook Esslinger, both on January 26, 2007; brothers, August, Leo, Andrew, Henry, Alfred and Sylvester; and sisters, Rose Kramer, Lena Broxterman, Theresa Dowell and Josephine Heiman.
Rosaries are 2 & 7 P.M. Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, November 26th at 10 A.M. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
Paul A. Skoch
Paul A. Skoch, 75, Baileyville, KS died Friday, May 23, 2003, at a Frankfort care home.
Paul was born November 18, 1927 on a farm northwest of St. Benedict, KS. He was the youngest son of Venzle B. and Rose Haefele Skoch. He grew up on the family farm, attended St. Mary's Grade School and graduated from Baileyville High School in 1945. He attended St. Benedict's College for one year prior to returning to work on the family farm.
On April 15, 1950, Paul married
Eleanor W. Bokern at St. Bede's Church in Kelly, KS. After their marriage they lived on and farmed the Skoch homestead for a year and then moved to a farm south of Axtell for a short period. In 1953, they purchased a farm northwest of Lillis and lived there for nine years. In 1962, they purchased the Skoch homestead and returned to the St. Benedict community. Paul was a farmer and raised cattle and hogs all of his life. In 1990, they retired and moved to Baileyville. Prior to moving to the Frankfort Care Home in April of this year, Paul had resided at Redbud Plaza in Onaga, KS for 18 months.
Paul was an active member of the communities in which he lived, willingly donating his time and talents to community projects and activities. He served on several community boards, including the Northeast Area Extension Advisory Council for Kansas State University, the Nemaha County Extension Council, and for 14 years as the agricultural representative on the Citizen's State Bank Board of Directors. He was involved in many programs for the development of youth including leader of the Hustler's 4-H club and coaching pee wee and little league baseball at St. Benedict for more than 10 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for over 50 years, was a devoted member of the Catholic Church, serving as a lector for 25 years.
Survivors besides his wife Eleanor are four daughters: Elaine Skoch of Lawrence, KS; Janet Holthaus of Osage City, KS; Lisa Moser, Wheaton, KS; Marcia Koelzer, Lincoln, NE; three sons: Michael Skoch, Hastings, NE; Mark Skoch, Baileyville; and Maurice Skoch, Topeka; two brothers: Sylvester Skoch, Seneca, KS and Robert Skoch, Axtell, KS; and two sisters: Thelma Key, Emporia, KS and Mildred Mueting, Axtell. Paul has 20 grandchildren and five godchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter Mary in 1954 and by his brother Raymond Skoch and sister Anna Marie Carroll.
The Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 AM, Monday, May 26 at Sacred Heart Church, Baileyville. The rosary will be prayed Saturday at 7 P.M. and on Sunday at 2 & 7 P.M. at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. The burial will be in the Sacred Heart Church Cemetery.

Robert F. Skoch
Robert F. Skoch, 90, of Axtell, Kansas, died on Saturday morning, April 24, 2010 at Crestview Manor care home in Seneca.
Robert was born February 22, 1920 on a farm northwest of St. Benedict, KS to Venzle B. and Rose Haefele Skoch. He grew up and helped on the family farm, attended St. Mary's Grade School, where he graduated from 8th grade. He graduated from National School of Aeronautics in Kansas City in 1941.
On February 3, 1942, Robert married
Imeldia Burdiek at St. Bede's Church in Kelly, Kansas. After their marriage he worked for aircraft manufacturer Lockheed in Bell, California, near Los Angeles, during World War II. When the war ended in 1945, they moved back to Kansas where Robert farmed in the eastern part of Marshall County until 1962. While living in the Summerfield area he bought and sold hogs for the Summerfield Sale Barn and also worked for the Meyer Lumber Company in Axtell. He was the treasurer for the Summerfield School District and also served on the School Board. The family then moved to Seneca where he owned and operated Skoch Café. Later he worked for Wayne Neff Construction. In 1966, they moved to Axtell where he was the maintenance engineer at the Axtell School for 18 years. In 2004, they retired and moved to Sabetha, and then to Seneca in 2009.
Robert was an active member of the community. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Axtell, and the Knights of Columbus Council #1169. He enjoyed woodworking, walnut cracking, gardening and fishing. He especially enjoyed making rocking horses, cribs, and tables and chairs for children; in addition, his love for the birds led him to build birdhouses of all kinds.
Survivors besides Imeldia, his wife of 68 years, are his children and their spouses, Annette & Ron Burton of Summerfield, Gary & Elsie Skoch of Olathe, Marilynn & Jim Laessig of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Lois & Dennis Kotas of Milligan, NE, Steve & Marti Skoch of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Ruth & David Storms of Independence, Missouri, Jean & Bruce Braddy of Manhattan, Kansas and Jane & Darrel Meyer of Lenexa, Kansas; a brother, Sylvester Skoch, of Seneca, Kansas; a sister, Mildred Mueting, of Axtell, Kansas; and 19 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jennifer Kelly; his brothers, Raymond and Paul Skoch; and sisters, Anna Marie Carroll and Thelma Key.
A rosary will be prayed at 7:30 PM Monday, April 26, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Axtell. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 AM Tuesday, April 27, also at St. Michael’s Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. He will lie in state Monday morning at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.
