Frank J. Steinlage

Frank J. Steinlage, 88, of Corning, Kansas, died Tuesday, January 28, 2003, at Country View Estates Care Home in Seneca, Kansas. He had been a resident there since January of 1997.
He was born January 20, 1915, on a farm southeast of Kelly, Kansas, the son of Joseph and Agnes Niehues Steinlage. He grew up there, attended St. Bede's School, and worked on the family farm.
On April 22, 1936, he married Frances B. Glissman at St. Bede's Church at Kelly. She survives of the home in Seneca. They lived and farmed northeast of Corning for three years before they bought a farm northwest of Corning. They owned a dairy operation, farmed and raised livestock. In 1982 they moved to Corning where they had built a home. Frank suffered a stroke on August 15, 1996.
He was a member of St. Patrick's Church at Corning where he served on the church board when they built St. Patrick's Church and established thecemeteryin Corning. He volunteered his time as custodian, as well as other doing other church work. Frank had served on the Corning School Board, Illinois Township Board, as a volunteer fireman, and was instrumental in getting the Co-op Elevator built in Corning. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus #1769 for over 50 years at Seneca. Frank enjoyed music and played the harmonica.
Survivors besides his wife, Frances, are seven sons, Melvin Steinlage and Cyril Steinlage, both of Seneca, Kenneth Steinlage of Sabetha, Kansas, Lester Steinlage and Leon Steinlage, both of Topeka, Ralph Steinlage of Scranton, Kansas, Lynn Steinlage of Corning; two daughters, Gladys Rempe of Corning and Janice Holthaus of Seneca; a sister, Mary Steinlage of Kelly; 42 grandchildren; and 59 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kathy Steinlage on February 28, 1974; great-granddaughters, Madeline Renner on July 9, 1999 and Libby Wenger on January 9, 1991; and five brothers, Henry, Lambert, Eberhard, Aloysius, and Benedict.
The mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 A.M. Friday at St. Patrick's Church at Corning. The burial will be in the church cemetery. The rosary will be prayed at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca on Wednesday at 7 P.M. and on Thursday at 2 and 7 P.M.
Memorials may be given for St. Patrick's Church or St. Patrick'sCemeteryand sent in care of the family.

Gertrude H. "Gertie" Steinlage

Gertrude Henrietta “Gertie” Steinlage, 81, of Kelly, Kansas died on Monday, November 10, 2014, at Crestview Nursing and Residential in Seneca.
Gertie was born on February 20, 1933 to Joseph A. and Anna E. Steinlage Bokern, on the Bokern family homestead west of Kelly. She graduated from Kelly High School in 1951, Salutatorian of her class. After high school she was employed as a Secretary at the Seneca Hospital.
On August 24, 1954, she married Lambert H. Steinlage at St. Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly. Lambert was drafted into the US Army on March 8, 1955 and was honorably discharged on July 25, 1956 after being diagnosed with diabetes. During their time in the Army they made many lifelong friendships. The couple returned to the Steinlage homestead; where they operated a Grade A dairy, raised livestock and farmed. The couple celebrated 35 years of marriage before Lambert’s death on November 14, 1989.
Gertie worked at Bob’s Sirloin Room in Seneca for over 20 years. She loved to fill her time attending her children’s sports and school activities. She loved family and enjoyed opening her doors to help others. She served as an officer and played an instrumental role in the early years of the Kelly Baseball Association. In the years after her husband’s death, she opened her house as a bed and breakfast for hunters.
She was a member of St. Bede’s Catholic Church, St. Bede’s Altar Society. Lambert and Gertie served as CCD teachers and Pre-Cana Marriage Instructors for the Archdiocese for years. She was a member and President of the Nemaha Valley School Board, and she was a longtime member of the Kelly Twilighters. Gertie enjoyed working outdoors in her yard and flower garden, cooking and baking, dancing, playing cards, and Scrabble (where she seldom lost!).
She is survived by one daughter, Dr. Susan (Dwight) Keller of Mandan, North Dakota; five sons Craig (Theresa) of Kelly, Chris (Terri) of Overland Park, Kansas, Curt (Leslie) of Buford, Georgia, Brad (Maggie) of Shawnee, Kansas, and Joe (Ashley) of Cary, North Carolina; sisters, Eleanor Skoch of Seneca, Leona Luebbe of Hendersonville, North Carolina, Peggy Laverentz of Georgetown, TX and Mildred Bokern of Mesa, Arizona; a brother, Lambert Bokern of Seattle, Washington; 18 grandchildren; and a special friend, Frank Ptacek.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her father on April 5, 1970; her mother on January 16, 1993; sisters, Erma Robke on April 18, 1996 and Angela Bokern on October 19, 1999.
Rosaries will be at Lauer Funeral Home on Thursday, November 13th at 2 & 7 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, November 14th at 10 AM at St. Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly. Burial will be in St. Bede’s Cemetery.
Memorials may be left in Gertie’s memory to St. Bede’s Cemetery, Breast Cancer Foundation andor the American Diabetes Association.

John J. Steinlage

John J. Steinlage, 70, of Seneca, Kansas, died Thursday, April 17, 2003, at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka.
He was born March 23, 1933, in Corning, KS, the son of William and Josepha E. Haverkamp Steinlage. He grew up on the family farm southeast of Kelly, KS. He graduated from Kelly High School in 1951 and farmed near Kelly. On February 25, 1954, he was inducted into the U.S. Army. He worked in the motor pool and was a welder. He served in Korea and was discharged in December 1955. He returned home to farm near Kelly.
On December 30, 1958, he married Wilma Kramer at Sacred Heart Church at Baileyville, KS. She survives of the home in Seneca. They farmed southeast of Kelly for four years. In the spring of 1963 they moved to a farm southwest of Baileyville. They farmed and operated a dairy. In April of 1998 they moved to Seneca, KS.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Church at Baileyville. He served on the church council and was a Eucharistic minister.
Survivors besides his wife Wilma, are two sons, Thomas Steinlage of Emporia and Brian Steinlage of Baileyville; three daughters Denise Hermesch of Olpe, KS, Vickie Muckenthaler of Emporia, and Nancy Henry of Goff; two brothers, Marvin Steinlage of Seneca and William Steinlage of Holton; four sisters, Mary Ann Olberding of Seneca, Arlene Lisa of Fountain Valley, CA, Verna Strathman of Topeka, and Joella King of Hoyt, KS; and 10 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Gerald Steinlage on November 29, 1967 and Elmer Steinlage of May 23, 1992.
The mass of Christian burial will be 10 A.M. Monday, April 21 at Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville. The burial with military honors provided by the Earle W. Taylor Post # 21 of the American Legion of Seneca and the Seneca Memorial Post #7458 of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars will be in the church cemetery. The rosary will be prayed at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca on Sunday, April 20, at 2 P.M. and at 7 P.M. He will lie in state at the funeral home after 8:30 A.M. Sunday.
Memorials may be given for Sacred Heart Church and sent in care of the family.

Josepha E. Steinlage

Josepha E. Steinlage, 98, of Seneca, Kansas, died Friday, July 13, 2001, at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca. She was transferred there from Crestview Manor Care Home in Seneca where she had been a resident since February of 1999.
She was born on a farm north of St. Benedict, Kansas on May 7, 1903, the daughter of Frank and Mary A. Stegeman Haverkamp. In 1906, her family moved to a farm 1/2 mile west of Kelly, Kansas. She attended St. Bede's School at Kelly and was a member of the first graduating class at St. Bede's. Following her schooling, Josepha worked on the family farm.
Josepha married William A. Steinlage on October 26, 1927 at St. Bede's Church in Kelly. William was originally from St. Lucas, Iowa and was working for his brother Ferdinand when he met Josepha. They farmed and raised livestock on a farm 3 miles south of Kelly until they retired and moved into Seneca in 1974. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1977, and had been married 59 years when William died on June 2, 1987.
She was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church, St. Ann's Altar Society at the church, and a former member of St. Bede's Church at Kelly. She did volunteer work at the Sts. Peter & Paul Mission Center in Seneca.
Josepha enjoyed cooking and baking and did all kinds of fancy work, including crocheting. She enjoyed working outside with her flowers and garden, and always had fresh flowers in her home.
Survivors include three sons, John Steinlage and Marvin Steinlage, both of Seneca, KS, and William Steinlage of Holton, KS; four daughters, Mary Ann Olberding of Seneca, KS, Arlene Lisa of Fountain Valley, CA, Verna Strathman of Topeka, KS, and Joella King of Hoyt, KS; a brother, Alphonse Haverkamp of Seneca; two sisters, Rose Bergman of St. Benedict, KS and Alma Holthaus of Centralia, KS; 26 Grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Gerald Steinlage on Nov. 29, 1967 and Elmer Steinlage on May 23, 1992; a grandson, Craig Steinlage on July 16, 1968; a great-grandson, Matthew Hiestand on March 17, 1997; five brothers, George, Lawrence, Frank, Edwin and Joseph Haverkamp; three sisters, Anna Boeding, Dora Steinlage and Mary Haug.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 A.M. Monday, July 16, at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. The burial will in St. Bede'sCemeteryin Kelly. The rosary will be prayed at 2 P.M. and a prayer service will be conducted at 8 P.M. Sunday at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.
Memorial contributions may be given for Sts. Peter & Paul Church or for St. Bede'sCemeteryand sent in care of the family.

Leander G. Steinlage

Leander G. Steinlage, 55, of Centralia, Kansas, died Friday, July 19, 2002, at his home.
He was born May 24, 1947, at Axtell, Kansas, the son of Henry and Loretta Wessel Steinlage. Leander grew up on the family farm at Corning, graduated from Corning Grade School, and from the Corning High School in 1965. As a young man he farmed with his dad. He was a member of the U.S. Army National Guard at Marysville, Kansas and attained the rank of Sergeant E5. In 1968 his unit was activated for duty at Ft. Carson, Colorado. After his discharge from active duty in November of 1969, he continued to train with the National Guard.
On November 23, 1968, he married Carol Sudbeck at St. Mary's Church at St. Benedict. She survives of the home. They lived on a farm south of Centralia for a year before moving to their present location southeast of Centralia, where they farmed and raised livestock. From 1983 to 1988 Leander was a custom wheat harvester, working across the wheat belt from Texas into Wyoming. In 1988 he started working for Keim Trucking Service in Sabetha, Kansas, first in the mechanic shop, then later as a driver in the area. In 1990 he became a long-haul trucker and enjoyed driving throughout the United States.
He was a member of St. Patrick's Church and the Arthur L. Mills Post #37 of the American Legion, where he always participated in the Memorial Day Services, both in Corning. Leander liked farming and doing mechanic work. Family gatherings were special times, and he especially liked dancing.
Survivors besides his wife, Carol, are a son, David Steinlage of Des Moines, Iowa; four daughters, including twins, Angela Conklin of Topeka and Karla Lueger of Shawnee, Kansas; two other daughters, Barbara Steinlage of Mission, Kansas, and Janet Reinecke, also of Shawnee, Kansas; a brother, Gerard Steinlage of Corning; four sisters, Theresa Mulryan, Joann Dawdy, and Rosemary Spangler, all of Topeka, and Mary Kay Hermesch of Goff, Kansas; and five grandchildren.
The mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 A.M. Monday at St. Patrick's Church at Corning. The burial with full military honors by the Corning American Legion will be in the church cemetery. The rosary will be prayed at the Lauer Funeral home in Seneca at 2 and at 7 P.M. Sunday.
Memorials may be given for St. Patrick's Church or for the American Legion at Corning and sent in care of the family.

Loretta B. Steinlage

Loretta B. Steinlage, 87, of Corning, KS, died Sunday, December 2, 2001, at Crestview Manor Care Home where she had been a resident since July of 1998.
She was born August 3, 1914, on a farm south of St. Benedict, KS, the daughter of Henry and Bernadine Macke Wessel. She grew up there, attended St. Mary's School at St. Benedict, and sang in the church choir there. She grew up in a family of seven daughters and helped on the family farm.
On October 29, 1940, she married Henry Steinlage at St. Mary's Church in St. Benedict. They farmed and raised livestock northeast of Corning until Henry became ill in 1974. She raised chickens and took care of fruit trees. Her husband died August 3, 1974. Loretta moved into Corning in the spring of 1979 and lived there until her health began to fail.
She was a member of St. Patrick's Church, the Altar Society at the church, and quilted at the church in Corning. She was a member of the Arthur Mills Post of American Legion Auxiliary and the Corning Home Demonstration Unit both at Corning. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, embroidery and other handwork.
Survivors are two sons, Leander Steinlage of Centralia, KS and Gerard Steinlage of Corning, KS; four daughters, Theresa Mulryan, Joann Dawdy, and Rosemary Spangler, all of Topeka, and Mary Kay Hermesch of Goff, KS; 25 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, Henry, she was preceded in death by six sisters, Mary Burdick, Rose Deters, Agnes Tangeman, Hilda Broxterman, Elizabeth Olberding, and Frances Stallbaumer.
The mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 A.M. Thursday, December 6 at St. Patrick's Church at Corning. The burial will be in the church cemetery. The rosary will be prayed at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca on Wednesday at 2 P.M. and at 7 P.M.
Memorials may be given for St. Patrick's Church or to Crestview Manor and sent in care of the family.

Ruth M. Stephens

Ruth M. Stephens, 82, Topeka, formerly of Corning, KS, died Tuesday, September 23, 2003, at her home. She moved to Topeka in October of 2002 from Yates Center, KS.
She was born January 14, 1921, on a farm in Grant Township, east of Havensville, KS, the daughter of George T. and Ruth Ingram Holsapple. She attended Buckeye School, two years at Havensville High School, and graduated from Corning High School in 1939. After working as a night switchboard operator at the telephone company in Corning for two years, she worked as a clerk and meat cutter at the Blair Grocery Store in Centralia.
On April 11, 1942, she married William L. Stephens at Wathena, KS, and lived in Corning. She worked at the Sage Grocery Store part time until 1969, when they moved to Tecumseh. In 1994 they relocated to Yates Center to be near her daughter. On June 16, 1998, her husband William preceded her in death.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Armstrong-Moyer Post #37 of the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Eastern Star, all at Corning. She was an avid reader, enjoyed handwork, quilting, embroidery, and had a large garden. She canned food and gave garden produce to family and friends.
Survivors are two sons, William Stephens, Tecumseh, KS, and Kenneth Stephens, Kuttawa, KY; two daughters, Rosemary Mangold of Taber, Alberta, Canada and Sophia Castro, Yates Center, KS; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a stillborn brother, George Holsapple, Jr.
Funeral services will be 10 A.M. Saturday at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. The burial will be in the Corning Cemetery. The family will meet with friends from 7 to 8 P.M. on Friday at the Funeral Home, where she will lie in state after 8:30 A.M. Friday.
Memorials may be given for the United Methodist Church at Corning or for the donor’s choice and sent in care of the family.
