James L. Stong
John L. Stong, 54, of Seneca, died suddenly Tuesday, September 3, 2013, at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka, after being transferred from Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.
John was born on March 3, 1959 in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of George Ivan and Leona M. Almond Stong. He attended grade school in Wichita, Kansas and junior high and high school in Sealing, Oklahoma graduating with the Class of 1977. He served his country for one year before being medically discharged.
He married
Tina Burchett in Manhattan, Kansas on June 4, 1983. The couple had two children. They later divorced. John attended Vo-Tech in Oklahoma City. He worked road construction and in the oil fields of Oklahoma. In 1991, while working road construction in Glasco, Kansas he met Mary Carr. The couple was wed on September 11, 1993. John served on the Volunteer Fire department and the First Responders while living in Glasco; something which held great meaning to him. The couple lived in Mahaska, Kansas and Hollenberg, Kansas before moving to Seneca in 2004. John worked for Landoll’s Manufacturing until his health required him to retire in 2007.
John enjoyed fishing, hunting, wood crafts and telling jokes.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Mary Stong of Seneca; children, Angel (Dan) Byers of Baldwin City, Kansas, John Stong Jr of Junction City, Jessica (Dallas) Chapman of Junction City; mother-in-law, Marian Carr of Seneca; grandchildren, Dylan McManis, Raimi Chapman, Octavius Turnage and Zayne Stong; an aunt, Marla Payden of Sealing, Oklahoma; and his lifelong best friend, Brad and Melanie Miller of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Funeral service for John will be 1 PM Thursday, September 5th, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. The family will visit with friends a hour prior to the service.
Memorials will be designated later.
Adrian B. Strathman
Adrian B. Strathman, 81, of Seneca, KS, died late Saturday, March 16, 2002, at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.
He was born November 10, 1920, on a farm south of Baileyville, KS, the son of Frank C. and Josephine Burdick Strathman. Adrian attended Center School, Sacred Heart School at Baileyville, Seneca Public High School for three years and graduated from St. Benedict High School at St. Benedict in 1938. He helped on family farm and later farmed southeast of Axtell, Kansas.
On May 25, 1954, he married
Marguerite Quinlan Schmits at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. She survives of the home in Seneca. They lived on the farm southeast of Axtell until 1957 when they moved to a farm north of St. Benedict, KS. They farmed and had a Grade A Dairy until 1970. They retired from farming and moved into Seneca in 1983.
He was on the steering committee and served as chairman of the Rural Water District # 3 when it was formed in 1972. He was the manager of the RWD #3 from 1974 to 1989.
He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church and the St. Joseph's Society, an usher for funerals, a volunteer at the Sts. Peter & Paul Mission Center, all at the church in Seneca, and a life member of the Knights of Columbus # 1769. He also served on the boards of the Step Foundation and the Seneca Golf Club. He was a former member of St. Mary's Church where he was a religion teacher, lector, and Eucharistic minister. He and his wife were members of the Seneca Squares and enjoying dancing with the club many years.
Survivors besides his wife Marguerite, are two sons, Leroy Strathman and Paul Strathman, both of Seneca; four daughters, Betty Sudbeck and Teresa Stallbaumer, both of Bern, Bernice Montgomery of Topeka, and Marilyn Glissman of Seneca; a brother, Galen Strathman of Seneca; three sisters, Agatha Strathman and Darlene Haug, both of Seneca, and Mary Kay Fangman of Topeka; 18 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Schmits on May 4, 1970; a granddaughter, Emily Dawn Montgomery on August 22, 1986; two brothers, Sylvester Strathman and Joseph H. Strathman; and three sisters, Eileen Strathman, Bernice Strathman, and Frances Kramer.
The mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 A.M. Wednesday at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. Burial will be in the church cemetery. There will be a visitation with the family at 7 P.M. Monday at the funeral home. There will be a vigil prayer service 2 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home, with visitation with the family afterwards. There will be a rosary at 7 P.M. Tuesday, also with visitation with the family afterwards.
Memorials may be given for Sts. Peter & Paul School or for the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital Home Health Service and sent in care of the family.
Joseph H. Strathman
Joseph H. Strathman, 82, Baileyville, Kansas, died Wednesday, February 7, 1996, the result of a pedestrian/vehicle accident on US Highway #36 west of Baileyville. He was taken to the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca by ambulance where he died shortly after arrival.
He was born August 13, 1913, on a farm south of Seneca, the son of Frank C. and Josephine Burdick Strathman. When he was six years old, he moved with his family to a farm south of Baileyville. He attended the Center School and Sacred Heart School at Baileyville. He also helped on the family farm.
On September 15, 1938, he married
Rita Holthaus at Sacred Heart Church at Baileyville. They lived and farmed north of Baileyville for three years. In 1941, they moved to a farm southwest of Baileyville where they farmed, raised livestock and had a dairy. Joe retired from farming in 1980 and built they built their present home west of Baileyville. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Rita, his wife of 57 years, survives of the home in Baileyville.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, the St. Joseph Society at the church, and was on the building committee when the new church was built in 1952. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus #1769 at Seneca for over 50 years and bowled at the Knights for over 25 years. He was on the Nemaha County Co-op Board from 1973 to 1982, Black Vermillion Water Shed Board from 1961 to 1973, and Baileyville School Board. His special concern and interests were always his grandchildren. He enjoyed gardening, taking care of his yard, and traveling. Joe was a well-respected man and will be missed by all in the community.
Survivors are his wife, Rita, seven sons, Leo Strathman of Goff, Larry Strathman of Centralia, Jerry Strathman, Gene Strathman, Richard Strathman, Roger Strathman all of Baileyville, Joe Strathman of Axtell; two daughters, Arlene Holthaus and Sheril Bergman, both of Seneca; two brothers, Adrian Strathman of Seneca and Galen Strathman of Baileyville; four sisters, Frances Kramer, Agatha Strathman, Darlene Haug, all of Seneca and Mary Kay Fangman of Topeka; 45 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two grandchildren; Sherri Strathman on March 27, 1968 and Greg Strathman on July 3, 1975; Sisters Eileen and Berniece Strathman, and recently by his brother, Sylvester Strathman on January 6, 1996.
The rosary was prayed at the Lauer Funeral Home on Thursday and Friday, February 8 & 9, 1996. The mass of Christian burial was Saturday, February 10, 1996 at Sacred Heart Church. Burial was in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Cemetery.

Kayla R. Strathman
Kayla R. Strathman, 20, of Baileyville, Kansas, died Sunday morning, July 14, 2013, in a one-vehicle accident four miles south of Corning.
Kayla Renee was born on September 18, 1992 in Seneca, the daughter of Richard and Janice Stallbaumer Strathman. She grew up in Baileyville and graduated from B&B High School in 2011. She was very athletic, participating in sports ranging from volleyball and basketball to softball and cheerleading.
Currently she was attending Kansas State University, majoring in Human Resources. She would have started her junior year next month. She enjoyed her social life and keeping up with her friends through online networking. She loved her family, friends, and being an aunt.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Baileyville. While attending school, she worked part time for Celebrations of the Heart Bridal Shop in Manhattan.
She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Joseph Strathman and Richard Stallbaumer.
She is survived her parents, Rich and Jan Strathman of Baileyville; brothers Jeff (Randi) Strathman of Baileyville, Dustin (Carla) Strathman of Axtell; a sister, Dana (Nate) Kohake of Manhattan; two nephews, Brody Strathman and Camden Kohake; and her grandmothers, Rita Strathman of Seneca and Jerian (Junior) Rethman of Seneca.
Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM on Tuesday, July 16, at Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 2 PM Wednesday, July 17, at Sacred Heart’s Catholic Church in Baileyville. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Donald F. Strohmeyer
Donald F. Strohmeyer, 80, of Axtell, Kansas, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at the Hanover Hospital, Hanover, Kansas, after an extended illness.
He was born January 27, 1921, on a farm north of Seneca, the son of Eugene and Bertha Stuke Strohmeyer. Don graduated from Sts. Peter & Paul High School in Seneca in 1938. He worked at the Curtis Candy Company for a year and attended the University of Kansas for a year before entering the US Army during World War II. He served at Ft. Leavenworth at the induction center doing clerical work until his discharge on February 6, 1946. He then earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Kansas, and also worked towards a doctorate. He taught science at Andale High School for a year before returning to Axtel in 1949. In Axtell he owned and operated Rexall Drug Store for 12 years. He later began work for the US Postal Service and retired as the Axtell postmaster in 1987. From 1987 to 1990, he served as principal of St. Michael's Catholic Grade School in Axtell.
On June 2, 1948, he married
Jacquelyn "Jackie" Schafer at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. She survives of the home in Axtell. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1998.
Don was a member of St. Michael's Church at Axtell where he served as a lector, a Eucharistic minister, and president of the school board. He was a 50-year life-member of the Knights of Columbus and a 50-year member of the American Legion both at Axtell. He was a founding member of the Seneca Golf Course at Seneca, Kansas, the club champion numerous times, and also had won the Northeast Kansas Open several times.
Survivors besides his wife are four sons, Don Strohmeyer of Bellevue, Nebraska, Dan Strohmeyer of Manhattan, Kansas, Doug Strohmeyer of Omaha, Nebraska, Damian Strohmeyer of Lexington, Massachusetts; a daughter, Donna Kinley of Plainfield, Illinois; and 14 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lynn Strohmeyer on January 19, 1992, and his twin brother, Eugene Strohmeyer on March 19, 1994.
The mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 A.M. Monday at St. Michael's Church at Axtell. The burial will be in St. Michael'sCemeterywith full military honors. The rosary will be prayed at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca at 2 P.M. Sunday afternoon and at 7 P.M. Sunday evening at St. Michael's Church.
Memorials may be given for St. Michael's School and sent in care of the family.
Margaret E. Studer
Margaret E. Studer, 87, of Seneca, Kansas, formerly of Beattie, Kansas, died Thursday, November 21, 2002, at Country View Estates Care Home in Seneca.
She was born July 16, 1915, on a farm south of Beattie, the daughter of Raymond and Agnes Douglass Easton. She graduated from Marysville High School at Marysville, Kansas, attended Kansas State University, and Emporia State Teacher's College where she earned a teaching certificate. She taught at Snipe Creek School south of Beattie for seven years.
On June 6, 1940, she married
Ralph P. Studer at St. Malachy's Church at Beattie. They lived southeast of Beattie where they farmed and raised cattle. In 1990 they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. They moved into Beattie, and in September of 1998 they moved to Seneca to be close to their family. Her husband, Ralph, died December 14, 1998.
She was a member of St. Malachy's Church and the Ladies Guild at the church, the Beattie Study Club, and the Beattie Better Builders Club. In Seneca, she was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church and St. Ann's Altar Society at the church. For many years she did volunteer work at the Marysville Community Hospital
Survivors are a son, Mark Studer of Seneca; a brother R.D. "Red" Easton of Seneca and three grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Verla Metzger.
The mass of Christian burial will be 10 A.M. Saturday at St. Malachy's Church at Beattie. She will lie in state at the church for an hour preceding the services. The burial will be in St. Patrick'sCemeteryat Beattie. The rosary will be prayed at 7 P.M. Friday at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.
Memorials may be given for St. Malachy's Church or for St. Patrick'sCemeteryand sent in care of the family.
