Leonard N. "Bud" Stuke

Leonard "Bud" N. Stuke, 88, of Seneca, Kansas died on Monday, January 7, 2014 at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas.
He was born on May 28, 1925 to Frank and Wihelmine “Minnie” Rochel Stuke on a farm southeast of Seneca. He attended Humphrey School and Sts. Peter & Paul School.
Bud married Cecila “Cedar” Marie Lehn on October 11, 1947 at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Horton, Kansas. Shortly after their union, the couple moved to the Stuke family farm where they have remained.
Bud simply loved farming and being outdoors and took great pleasure and pride in the livestock he raised and the crops he grew. He also enjoyed hunting. Bud was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and St. Joseph’s Society.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Francis Stuke, Walter Stuke, Mary Steppe and Wilbur Stuke.
He is survived by his wife 66 years; sons, Stephen (Candy) Stuke of Sabetha and Michael (Donna) Stuke of Seneca; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
Mass of Christian Burial is 11AM Friday, January 10, 2014 at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Seneca. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM on Thursday, January 9th at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.
Memorials may be given to Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery.

Cyrilla B. Sudbeck

Cyrilla B. Sudbeck, 90, of St. Benedict, Kansas, died on December 23, 2012 at Life Care Center of Seneca, where she had been a resident since February 2010.
Cyrilla Bertha Sudbeck was born on November 28, 1922 to William and Anna (Blocker) Bergman in St. Benedict. She attended St. Mary’s High School graduating with the Class of 1940. As a young girl, she helped on the farm and worked for her parents at their store, Bergman Grocery Store.
She married Clemens Carl Sudbeck on May 15, 1946. The couple lived north of Seneca and raised seven children. Clemens died February 20, 1976. Cyrilla returned to St. Benedict and lived in the house next to where she grew up.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Benedict, a former officer of the Altar Society, a member of the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital Guild, Pitch Club, the Nemaha County Historical Society, Nemaha County Council on Aging, and the Fun Loving Club. She loved raising a garden and canning the fruits of her labor, dancing and playing cards. Her favorite place to pray the rosary was at the Grotto in St. Benedict.
She is survived by her seven children, James (Betty) Sudbeck of Bern, Richard (Betty) Sudbeck of Seneca, Kathryn (Richard) Heinen of Wetmore, Kenneth (Ellen) Sudbeck of Seneca, Donald (Nancy) Sudbeck of Seneca, Jeanne (Nick) Holthaus of Baileyville and John (Theresa) Sudbeck of Seneca; a brother, Melvin Bergman of Seneca; and a sister, Rita Wichman of Topeka; 22 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by siblings Raphaela Haverkamp, Dorothy Huninghake, and Callistus Bergman; and son-in-law, Nick Holthaus.
Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM Wednesday, December 26, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of a Christian Burial will be offered at 10 AM Thursday, December 27, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Benedict. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Jordan A. Sudbeck

Jordan A. Sudbeck, age 2, son of Matthew and Kimberly Sudbeck of Bern, Kansas, died Thursday, February 14, 2013 at Children's Medical Center in Omaha.
Jordan Allen Sudbeck was born June 25, 2010 at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca, the son of Matthew and Kimberly Stange Sudbeck.
Jordan was baptized at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Benedict, Kansas.
He is survived by his parents Matt and Kim of Bern; his brother Elijah of the home; grandparents, Larry and Rosemary Sudbeck of Bern, and Marty and Patricia Stange of Hastings, Nebraska; and great-grandparents, Odelia Sudbeck of Seneca, and Barry and Alberta Stange of Hastings, Nebraska.
He was preceded in death by great-grandparents, Ignatius Sudbeck, Melvin and Joan Ronnebaum, and Ferdinand and Bernice Wicht.
Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM Monday, February 18, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of the Angels will be offered at 10:30 AM Tuesday, February 19, at St. Mary’s Church in St. Benedict. Burial is in the church cemetery.

Max F. Sudbeck

Max F. Sudbeck, 46, of Hiawatha, KS, died early Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at the Hiawatha Community Hospital. His death was due to a brain tumor, which was diagnosed in November of 2002.
He was born March 29, 1957, at Sabetha, KS, the son of Virgil and Loyola Heiman Sudbeck. He grew up on the family farm northwest of St. Benedict, KS, attended St. Benedict Grade School and graduated from B & B High School at Baileyville in 1975. He attended Cloud County College for two years and graduated from Kansas State University in 1979 with a degree in agronomy. He had worked for Servi-Tech Inc., for the Brown County Coop, Taylor Seed Farms, and most recently for Croplan Genetics as a district sales manager. He was a Certified Crop Advisor.
On April 16, 1983, he married Rosalee Kramer at St. Bede’s Church in Kelly, KS. They lived in Hiawatha. She survives of the home.
He was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church at Hiawatha, where he served on the church council, was a lector and a C.C.D. teacher. He was president of the Hiawatha Youth Baseball Association and coached baseball. He was also a member and on the board of the Hiawatha Booster Club and chairman of the Kansas Ag Retailers Association.
Survivors besides his wife, are two sons, Benjamin and Mark, and a daughter, Krista, all of the home; his parents, Virgil and Loyola Sudbeck of Seneca; a brother, Dale Sudbeck of Baileyville, and four sisters, Lora Heiman and Mary Beth Haverkamp, both of Baileyville, Julie Smith of Colwich, KS, and Amy Kuckelman of Seneca.
The mass of Christian burial will be 10 A.M. Thursday at St. Mary’s Church at St. Benedict, KS. The burial will be in the church cemetery. The rosary will be prayed on Wednesday at 2 P.M. and at 7 P.M at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca, where he will lie in state after 8:30 A.M. Wednesday.
Memorials may be given for an education fund for his children or for the Hiawatha Baseball Association and sent in care of the family.

Odelia E. Sudbeck

Odelia E. Sudbeck, 92, of St. Benedict, Kansas, died on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Crestview Manor care home of Seneca, where she had been a resident since 2009.
Odelia Elizabeth Broxterman Sudbeck was born on October 9, 1920 to Joseph H. and Bernadine C. Voet Broxterman in Baileyville. She attended Baileyville Grade School and graduated from Seneca Public High School in 1938. As a young girl, she helped worked for her parents at their hardware store in Baileyville. She enjoyed singing in the church choir, roller skating, playing baseball and tap dancing in her youth. After graduation, she moved to Topeka and worked as a nanny.
She married Ignatius F. "Nate" Sudbeck on October 3, 1939 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Baileyville. The couple lived north of Seneca and raised eight children. They celebrated 53 years of marriage before Ignatius’s death on October 17, 1992.
Odelia was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Benedict and the Altar Society at the church. She was also a member of the Friendship Sewing Club for 40 years (a “club” comprised of 12 neighbor ladies). She loved raising a garden and canning the fruits of her labor, dancing, sewing and embroidering. She and her husband enjoyed polka bands and attending numerous wedding dances.
She is survived by her children, Anita (Linus) Haverkamp of Wetmore, Marlene (Ferdinand) Deters of Baileyville, Larry (Rosemary) Sudbeck of Bern, Judy (Larry) Macke of Seneca, Carol Steinlage of Centralia, Linda (John) Heinen of Olathe, Eldon (Theresa) Sudbeck of Seneca and Joyce (Ron) Burdiek of Wetmore; a brother, Norbert "Ike" Broxterman of Seneca; 36 grandchildren and 75 great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and Vincent Broxterman; three sisters, Norene Bauer, Mary Montgomery and Esther Broxterman; great-grandchildren, Ava Steinlage, Jordan Sudbeck, Lexi and Leslie Talley and Haley Macke; and a son-in-law, Leander Steinlage.
Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM Monday, May 6, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of a Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 AM Tuesday, May 7, at St. Mary’s Church in St. Benedict. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given in Odelia’s memory for St. Mary’s Cemetery, and sent in care of the family.

Thomas L. "Tom" Sullivan

Thomas L. “Tom” Sullivan, 78, Seneca, KS, died Thursday, October 30, 2003, at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca. He had suffered a broken hip earlier and had been hospitalized in Topeka.
He was born April 26, 1925, at the Axtell Hospital, Axtell, KS, the son of Thomas W. and Elsie M. Hill Sullivan. He grew up in Axtell and graduated from Axtell High School in 1943. Following high school, he worked in Seneca for a tree trimming business.
On March 8, 1945, he was inducted into the US Army. Tom served in the Asian-Pacific Theater in the Philippines. He served in Company “L”, 20th Infantry Regiment, in the military police, drove a jeep, and also served in Japan where he received the Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal. He was discharged January 30, 1947. When he returned to civilian life, he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad laying wire for signals and then for the U.S. Forestry Service for two years in Idaho. He recalled helping fight one forest fire for three weeks which required 350 “smoke jumpers.” After returning to Seneca where his parents lived, he worked for the Slack Brothers laying brick. He helped take care of his parents. Due to his health problems, he was admitted to Crestview Manor Care Home in Seneca on October 10, 1979.
He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca and a former member of St. Michael’s Church in Axtell. Tom was an avid sports fan. He followed the Atlanta Braves baseball team, the Kansas Jayhawks basketball team, and St. Louis Rams football team.
There are no immediate survivors. He was preceded in death by his father, January 25, 1979, his mother on April 21, 1983, and his brother Patrick Sullivan on June 22, 1979.
The mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 A.M. Saturday at St. Michael’s Church at Axtell. The burial will be in the church cemetery, with military honors by the R.R. Hendricks Post #214 of the American Legion of Axtell. The rosary will be prayed at Crestview Manor in Seneca on Friday at 2 P.M. where he will lie in state during the rosary. He will lie in state at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca after 8:30 A.M. on Friday.
Memorials may be given to the Activity Fund at Crestview Manor, 808 N. 8th St. Seneca, 66538.

Agnes W. Sweetland

Agnes W. Sweetland, 89, of Seneca, KS, died Saturday, July 27, 2002, at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.
She was born May 27, 1913, on a farm west of Seneca, the youngest of twelve children of Joseph and Mary Rethman Olberding. She grew up there and graduated from Sts. Peter & Paul High School in 1931. Agnes was employed at the Agricultural Adjustment Administration in Seneca from 1934 to 1944, the Pomona Federal Building & Loan in Pomona, CA, and the State Soil Conservation in Laramie, Wyoming. From 1967 until 1969 she worked in medical records at the Seneca Hospital and from 1970 to 1974 at the law offices of Harry Lanning & Bill Drumm, and later at the Richard Massieon Law Office.
On October 29, 1938, she married Lorin L. Sweetland in Falls City, Nebraska. They lived in Seneca except while Lorin was in the service. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on October 29, 1988, and also celebrated their 60th anniversary. Her husband, Lorin, preceded her in death on October 5, 1999.
She was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca and St. Ann's Altar Society at the church. For 13 years she served as the chairman of the Nemaha County Chapter of the American Red Cross and for 8 years as the chairman of the local Red Cross Blood Mobile. Agnes also was a member of the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital Guild, the Earl W. Taylor Post #21 of the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Seneca Business & Professional Women's Club.
Survivors are a son, Gary Sweetland and a daughter, Trudy Pennington, both of Seneca; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, a stillborn son, Lorin Herbert, in 1943, and Daniel E. Sweetland on June 9, 1988. She was also preceded in death by her seven brothers August, Ed, Ben, Leo, Joe, two infant brothers, and four sisters, Anna Olberding, Mary Grollmes, Rose Holthaus, and Edith Kokenge.
The mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10:30 A.M. Monday at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. The burial will be in the church cemetery. The rosary will be prayed at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca on Sunday at 2 P.M. and at 7 P.M.
Memorials may be given for Sts. Peter & Paul School or for the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital and sent in care of the family.
