Carl F. Tanking

Carl F. Tanking, 94, of Seneca, Kansas, died Saturday, January 26, 2002, at a Seneca care home where he had been a resident for five days.
He was born October 31, 1907, on the family farm northeast of Seneca, a twin son, and one of ten children born to William and Agnes Klunenberg. He grew up there, attended Sts. Peter & Paul School in Seneca, worked on the family farm, helped local farmers shuck corn and cut firewood. He was a lifetime farmer and stockman.
On April 8, 1931, he married Mildred Winkler at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. They lived and farmed east of Seneca and south of Centralia before moving to a farm south of Baileyville in 1944. They retired and moved to Seneca in 1969. They celebrated their 50th and 60th wedding anniversaries and had been married for over 70 years at the time of his death.
He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church, the St. Joseph Society at the church, and the Knights of Columbus #1769 all at Seneca. He was a former member of Sacred Heart Church at Baileyville, Kansas. He was also a member of the Farmers Union and had served on the Center Township Board. He received the Banker's Award for Soil conservation. Carl loved fishing, and he and his wife "Millie" often went fishing together.
Survivors are his wife, Mildred of Seneca; a son Leonard Tanking of Vermillion, Kansas; two daughters, Patricia Dalinghaus of Seneca, and Joan Boyd of Olathe, Kansas; a sister, Rosie Minor of Sabetha, Kansas; five granddaughters and eleven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a infant son, William Carl Tanking on January 10, 1936; five brothers, Paul, his twin, Albert, Edward, Lawrence "Doc", and an infant, Raymond; three sisters, Laurentia "Mickey" Peppersack, and infants, Bernardine and Rosalia.
The rosary will be prayed Sunday at 2 P.M. and a vigil prayer service will be conducted at 7 P.M. Sunday at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. The mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 A.M. Monday at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. The burial will be in Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery.
Memorials may be given for Sts. Peter & Paul School or Sacred HeartCemeteryand sent in care of the family.

Cecilia M. Tanking

Cecilia Mary Tanking, 92, of Wetmore, KS, died late evening on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka surrounded by her family.
She was born October 17, 1919 on a farm near Le Mars, IA, the daughter of Barney and Mary Rolfes Peppersack. In 1929 the family moved to a farm southwest of Baileyville, KS, where she grew up and attended Sacred Heart School. In 1933 she moved with her family to the St. Bridget community northwest of Axtell.
On January 9, 1940 she married Lawrence F. "Doc" Tanking at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church north of Axtell. They lived and farmed southeast of Oneida until 1953, when they moved to a farm north of Seneca. In 1956, they moved to a farm southeast of Wetmore. The couple retired in 1977 and moved to Wetmore. They enjoyed 57 years of marriage before Lawrence’s death on July 29, 1997.
She was a parishoner and sacristan at St. James Catholic Church in Wetmore and a member St. Ann’s Altar Society at the church. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Wetmore.
Cecilia loved having her family around and always offered a cinnamon roll or some other sweet treat that she baked. Her activities were making cinnamon rolls, dinner rolls, pies, cookies and cakes. She also made a quilt for each of her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by six sons, Donald (Barbara) Tanking of Topeka, Larry (Alberta) Tanking of Holton, Gerald (Denise) Tanking of St. Marys, Kenneth (Louise) Tanking of Netawaka, Randall (Alice) Tanking of Wetmore and Richard Tanking of Sabetha; two daughters, Mary Lou (John) Cheray of Topeka and Berneta (Dean) Shults of Topeka; 27 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband she was preceded in death by a son James on February 5, 1988; two brothers, Frank and Henry “Hank” Peppersack; and three sisters, Rosa Linda Latus, Frances Stallbaumer and Philomina Fangman.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 AM Monday, March 19, at St. James Catholic Church in Wetmore. Burial will be in the Wetmore Cemetery. A visitation will be held at 2 PM Sunday at St. James Church, with a rosary at the church to follow at 3 PM. She will lie in state until 1 PM Sunday at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.
Memorials may be given in Cecilia’s memory for the Sabetha Nemaha County Training Center, sent in care of the family.

Mildred A. Tanking

Mildred A. Tanking, 92, Seneca, died Saturday, March 05, 2005, at Life Care Center in Seneca, where she had been a resident since she and her husband entered in 2002.
She was born September 21, 1912, on a farm east of Seneca, the daughter of William and Zella Simmons Winkler. She attended Triumph School # 16, helped on the family farm, and helped raise her twin sisters.
On April 8, 1931, she married Carl F. Tanking at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. They lived and farmed east of Seneca and south of Centralia before moving to a farm south of Baileyville in 1944. They retired and moved to Seneca in 1969. They celebrated their 50th and 60th wedding anniversaries, and had been married over 70 years when Carl died January 26, 2002.
She was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church and St. Ann’s Altar Society at the church. She enjoyed fishing with her husband. She did a lot of embroidery and crocheting, making keepsakes for her family.
Survivors are a son, Leonard Tanking of Vermillion; two daughters, Pat Dalinghaus of Seneca and Joan Boyd of Olathe; a sister, Zita Becker of Hiawatha; three granddaughters, twelve great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband she was preceded in death by an infant son, William Carl on January 10, 1936; two granddaughters, Connie Remby, April 1, 2003 and Jackie Berkley, December 16, 2003; an infant brother, Raymond; and three sisters Rita McCasey, Bernadine Stegeman Johnson and Evelyn Haverkamp.
Mass of Christian burial will be offered Wednesday at 10:30 AM at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The rosary will be prayed at 2 and 7 PM Tuesday at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca, where she will lie in state after 8:30 AM on Tuesday.
Memorials may be given for Sts. Peter & PaulCemeteryor Sacred HeartCemeteryand sent in care of the family.

Clarence R. Tanner

Clarence R. Tanner, 83, of Kansas City, Kansas, died Tuesday, October 2, 2001, at East Ridge Care Home in Centralia, Kansas.
Mr. Tanner was a lifelong Kansas City, KS resident until entering the care home in Centralia in December of 1998. He was an electrician for R.F. Fischer Electric for 52 years before retiring in 1984. He was a member of Emerson Park Christian Church and a U.S. Army veteran of WWII.
Survivors are two sons Rick Tanner and John Tanner, both of Kansas City, KS; a daughter, Tina Tanner of Vallejo, CA; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Marian Tanner; a son, Terry Tanner; and a daughter, Sharon Curry.
Funeral services were Friday, October 5, 2001 at Maple Hill Funeral Home in Kansas City, KS. The burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery.
Memorials may be given for the Alzheimer's Association.
Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca was in charge of local arrangements.

Lance Tempel

Dr. Lance H. Tempel, 49, a Seneca, Kansas, dentist died suddenly on Friday, September 21, 2001, at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca. His death was due to an apparent heart attack.
He was born September 14, 1952, the son of Louis and Marian Schaefer Tempel, in Kansas City, Mo. The family moved to Sedalia, MO in 1957, where he graduated from Smith-Cotton High School in 1970. He entered the University of Missouri at Kansas City in 1970 and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1974.
In 1974 Lance married the former Nancy Harrison of Sedalia. In 1977 he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Missouri at Kansas City, and shortly afterwards began his practice in Seneca.
Lance was president of the Kansas Academy of General Dentistry in 1998. He was a member of the American Dental Association and was a delegate to the Kansas Dental Association from the Northeast District. He served on the Peer Review Committee and was the Northeast Kansas District Chairman. He also participated in the Kansas Donated Dental Services. Lance was about to have the honor of being inducted into the International College of Dentists on October 12, 2001.
In Seneca, he served on the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital Board of Trustees and was the president from 1996-98. He was a member and past president of the Seneca Chamber of Commerce, Seneca Free Library, and the Seneca Lion's Club. He was also a member of the Nemaha County Historical Society, the Site Council for the Seneca Grade School and the United Methodist Church Board. Most recently, he had been serving on the Seneca Housing Authority Board, the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital Foundation Board, and involved in a show with the Bern Community Theatre.
Lance enjoyed playing golf, singing in the church choir, fishing with his children, along with acting in the local community theatre. He worked tirelessly to provide quality care to his patients. Lance was a dedicated husband and father to his two children.
Survivors includes his wife, Nancy, a daughter, Anne, and a son, Eric of the home; his parents, Louis and Marian Tempel of Sedalia; a brother, Curt of Tulsa, OK; and a sister, Marla Abrams of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; a niece and a nephew.
Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Tuesday at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. A vigil prayer service will be conducted at 7 P.M. Monday at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Graveside services will be 10:30 A.M. Wednesday at Memorial ParkCemeteryat Sedalia, MO.
Memorials may be given for the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca and sent in care of the family.

Clarence R. Tevis

Clarence R. Tevis, 71, of Seneca, Kansas, died Wednesday, May 24, 2000, at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca. He had been in failing health for the past year.
He was born July 23, 1928, at Chillicothe, Missouri, the son of Thurman M. and Lecta Ramsey Tevis. Clarence graduated from Chillicothe High School in 1946 and had worked operating the projector at the local theater. He also worked for a short time in Kansas City.
On December 4, 1947, he married Corinne Abernathy at Chillicothe. She survives of the home in Seneca. Clarence began employment with J.C. Penney's at Chillicothe on December 10, 1947, where he worked five year. He worked at Topeka and in the south Omaha, Nebraska Penney's as assistant manager.
In 1962 he was transferred to the Penney's Store at Seneca where he was the manager until the store closed in 1987. He had received sales achievement awards from the company for his dedication and service. He retired after the Seneca store closed.
He was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Seneca where he had served on the Board of Deacons. He had served on the Board of Directors of the Citizens State Bank and was a past president of the Seneca Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors besides his wife, Corinne, are a son, Steven Tevis of Normal, Illinois; a daughter, Connie Johnson of Lees Summit, Missouri; a brother, Robert Tevis of Bloomington, Illinois; two sisters Betty Robinson of Edmond, Oklahoma and Mary Lou Mc Irvin of Chillicothe; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 27, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. The eulogy was given by his granddaughter Kelly Johnson. Burial was at the Seneca City Cemetery.
Memorials may be given for the First Congregational United Church of Christ and sent in care of the family.

Betty R. Thieme

Betty R. Thieme, 72, of Wetmore, Kansas, died Thursday, August 31, 2000, at a Topeka, Kansas, hospital as the result of a automobile accident on US 75 south of Holton, Kansas.
She was born November 7, 1927, on a farm, south of Oneida, Kansas, the daughter of Albert J. and Rose Chilcoat Wende. She grew up there and attended a rural school. She worked at the Nemaha County Creamery and at the Blough Restaurant both in Sabetha. In the early 1980's she was employed at the Dinner Bell Café in Wetmore.
On April 29, 1950, she married Milton Thieme at Seneca. He survives of the home in Wetmore. They lived and farmed northwest of Woodland, Kansas. In 1960 they moved to their present farm 5 miles northwest of Wetmore.
She was a member of Levick-Barrett Unit #282 of the American Legion Auxiliary at Wetmore where she was treasurer for 18 years and helped with bingo. She also did volunteer work at the Wetmore Public Library.
Survivors besides her husband, Milton, are: a son, Mark Thieme of Wetmore; a daughter, Susan Hirsch of Netawaka, Kansas; three brothers, Raymond Wende of Seneca, Robert Wende of Spokane, Washington, Donald Wende of Phoenix, Arizona; two sisters, Bertha "Peggy" Clemens Ford and Darlene Campbell both of Sabetha; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Michael Thieme on February 24, 1970.
Funeral services will be 10 AM Saturday, September 2 at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. The burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Goff, Kansas.
Memorials may be given for the American Diabetes Association or the American Legion Auxiliary and sent in care of the family.
