Zachary R. Tiernan
Zachary Ryan Tiernan, son of Steve and Stephanie Tiernan, Seneca, died shortly after birth, Sunday, April 3, 2005, at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.
Survivors besides his parents are a brother Jacob and a sister Haley, both of the home; grandparents, Kenneth and Joanne Brummer, Don and Virginia Montgomery, all of Tipton, KS, and Mike and Sherry Tiernan, Beloit, KS; great grandmothers, Ursula Arnoldy and Marjean Konzem, both of Beloit, Colleen Tiernan, Ft. Worth, TX, and Ruth Montgomery, Downs, KS.
The family and friends will meet at 5 PM on Tuesday, April 5, at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca and proceed to Sts. Peter & PaulCemeteryin Seneca for a graveside service at 6 P.M.
Memorials may be given for the Tipton Christian School or for the Spring Creek Golf Course, and sent in care of the family.
Marie Toby
Marie Toby, 88, of Seneca, Kansas, died Friday, February 9, 2001, at Eastridge Care Home in Centralia, Kansas. She had been a resident there since the fall of 1998.
She was born November 22, 1912, on a farm southwest of Centralia, the daughter of Henry and Tillie Smith Jessee. She graduated from Vermillion High School in Vermillion, Kansas in 1930, and attended Kansas Agricultural College in Manhattan, Kansas, for two years.
On November 9, 1940, she married
Eugene J. "Gene" Toby at Leavenworth, Kansas. They lived at Seneca where he was a well-known auctioneer. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1990. Her husband died March 2, 1992.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son Robert "Bob" Toby on June 8, 1996.
She had attended Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca with her husband and earlier had been a member of the Congregational Church in Vermillion. She was a member of the Seneca Sunflowers Home Demonstration Unit in Seneca and assisted her husband when he was the Nemaha County Democratic Chairman for 16 years. She bowled on a league in Seneca and enjoyed traveling throughout the US with her husband. Marie liked sewing, crafts, having flowers around her home, and playing cards with friends.
Survivors are two sons, Richard Toby of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and William J. Toby of Seneca; ten grandchildren, and a great grandson.
Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Monday at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. The burial will be in Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery. The family will meet with friends from 7 to 8 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be given for Eastridge Activity Fund or Sts. Peter & PaulCemeteryand sent in care of the family.
Helen L. Tomlinson
Helen L. Tomlinson, 79, Seneca, KS, died Monday, January 12, 2004, at a Topeka hospital. She had surgery for an aneurysm on January 6, 2004, and her death was due to complications following the surgery.
She was born May 12, 1924, the daughter of Francis A. and Viola Faye Edwards Malloy, at Onaga, KS. She attended Seneca Public Schools. As a young woman, Helen did domestic work in Seneca.
On April 22, 1941, she married
Paul J. Lang at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. They lived in Seneca where Helen was a homemaker. Her husband, Paul, died April 1, 1963. After Paul’s death, she worked as a dental assistant for about five years and then began work as a clerk at the J.C. Penney Store in Seneca. She worked there until she retired in 1986.
On May 4, 1968, she married
Richard T. “Dick” Tomlinson at Corning, KS. They lived in Seneca. He survives of the home.
She was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church, St. Ann’s Altar Society, and the Quilting Group at the church. She was also a member of member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Helen volunteered at Country View helping the residents with special activities. She loved following her grandchildren’s activities, especially sports.
Survivors besides her husband, Dick, are three sons, Ron Lang and Tom Lang, both of Topeka, and Randy Lang of Seneca; a daughter, Paulette Grollmes of Seneca; two stepsons, Jim Tomlinson and Rick Tomlinson, both of St. Louis, MO; two step-daughters, Linda Fletcher of Paola and Brenda Beard of Germantown, TN; five sisters, Lila Henry and Lavern Colby, both of Kansas City, MO, Esther Chilson and Joyce Potter, both of Topeka, and Barbara Bradley of Linden, KS; 18 grandchildren; 2 great-grandsons; and 6 step great-grandchildren.
The mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 A.M. Thursday at Sts. Peter & Paul Church. The burial will be in the church cemetery. The rosary will be prayed at 3 and 7 P.M. Wednesday at the Lauer Funeral Home.

Patty L. Unger
Patty L. Unger, 64, of Topeka, Kansas, formerly of Centralia, died suddenly Friday morning, May 10, 2013, at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka.
Patty Lou Griffiths Unger was born on February 12, 1949 to G. Gordon and Mary Warrenburg Griffiths, and grew up on a farm near Centralia. She graduated from Centralia High School in 1967.
She married
Burt A. Unger on October 5, 1980 at the Centralia United Methodist Church. They lived in Topeka where Patty worked for Walgreens for 43 years, until her retirement in 2011.
She was a member of the Centralia United Methodist Church, the Ward-Meade Garden Club, Great Adventure Travel Tours, Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority and an interfaith women’s Christian group.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Dolores Shumaker; and her brother, Max "Bob" Griffiths.
She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Burt of Topeka; and her brother, Ron (Linda) Griffiths of Topeka.
Funeral service will be held at 11 AM Tuesday, May 14, at the United Methodist Church in Centralia. Family will meet with friends at the church from 10 to 11 AM prior to the service. Burial will be in the Centralia City Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given for the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church and/or the Ward-Meade Garden Club, and sent in care of Lauer Funeral Home.
August "Gus" Uphaus
August "Gus" Uphaus, 94, Seneca, KS, died Tuesday evening, December 23, 2003, at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.
He was born November 16, 1909, at Vorden, Germany, the son of Bernard and Johanna Kamps Uphaus. Gus graduated from Catholic schools and attended one year at St. Ludwig College in Germany. In Janaury of 1927 when he was 17 years old, he came to the United States. Henry Rottinghaus was his sponsor and he worked for him for 13 months, and later for Joe Ronnebaum and Frank Sudbeck farming and raising cattle. He worked hard and bought his own farm east of Seneca.
On January 24, 1934, he married
Rose E. Ronnebaum at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1984. His wife, Rose, died June 19, 1987.
He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church and president of the St. Joseph Society for many years. Gus was a member of the Knights of Columbus #1769, a past Grand Knight, and also a member of the 4th Degree Ponce de Leon Assembly.
Gus enjoyed several trips back to his homeland. He was also well known in the area as a winemaker.
Survivors are six sons, Leonard and Robert of Topeka, John of Wichita, Donald of Seneca, Richard of Erie, KS, Kenneth of Leavenworth; a brother Joseph and a sister Marie Hugelmier both of Germany; seventeen grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers Bernard and Herman, and five sisters. Paula Wheming, Josepha Grafphmeyer, Elizabeth Macke, Angelia and Johanna.
The mass of Christian burial will be 10 A.M. Saturday at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. The burial will be in the church cemetery. The rosary will be prayed at 2 P.M. Friday and a prayer service will be conducted at 7 P.M. Friday at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Gus will lie in state at the funeral home after 8:30 A.M. Friday.

Louise Vernon
Louise Vernon, 88, of Goff, Kansas, died Saturday evening, August 10, 2002, at the Hiawatha Community Hospital, Hiawatha, Kansas. She had been a patient there for about two weeks.
She was born November 4, 1913, on a farm west of Goff, Kansas, the daughter of Charles and Maude Wessel Clarkson. She grew up there, attended school in Goff, and graduated from Wetmore High School in 1931. After earning a teaching certificate in 1931, she taught in a rural school and then at elementary schools in Goff and Wetmore for many years. In 1963 she graduated from Emporia State University with a degree in education. In 1974 she retired from teaching.
On December 1, 1934, she married
Harold D. Vernon at Washington, Kansas. He preceded her in death on July 1, 1985.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church at Goff, the Whiting Chapter #287 of the Order of the Eastern Star, the GFWC Goff Women's Club, and the Nemaha County Home Demonstration Unit at Goff.
Survivors are two daughters, Kathryn Perrin of Ozawkie, Kansas, and Dorothy Legere of Colorado Springs, Colorado; a brother Floyd Clarkson of Hiawatha; seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 10:30 A.M. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Goff. She will lie in state at the church for an hour preceding the services. The burial will be in FairviewCemeteryin Goff. She will lie in state after 10 A.M. Monday at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.

Margaret E. Vondemkamp
Margaret E. Vondemkamp, 94, of Seneca, Kansas, died Monday, January 1, 2001, at Crestview Manor Care Home in Seneca. She had been a resident there since November 27, 2000.
She was born June 26, 1906, on a farm northwest of Corning, KS, the daughter of Henry and Agnes Ross Eisenbarth. When she was a young child, the family moved to a farm east of Corning where she grew up. She attended Corning schools, graduating from Corning High School in 1924. She attended Emporia Teacher's College for two summers and attained a teacher's certificate. She then taught at Pine School east of Corning for a year and at Social Hill School north of Corning also for a year.
On October 19, 1927, she married
Frank Vondemkamp at St. Bede's Church at Kelly. He preceded her in death on November 21, 1993. They lived and farmed five miles south of Seneca. In June of 1989 they moved into Seneca. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. For the past two years, Margaret has made her home with her son Bob and his wife, Mary Beth Vondemkamp.
She was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church and St. Ann's Altar Society at the church in Seneca. She was a former member of St. Bede's Church at Kelly. She enjoyed crocheting, working crossword puzzles, and was an avid reader, frequently checking out books from the library.
Survivors are her son, Robert of Seneca; a brother, Lou Eisenbarth of Topeka; a sister, Dorothy "Dode" Henry of Goff, KS; four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
The mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 A.M. Thursday at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. The burial will be in the church cemetery. A vigil prayer service will be conducted at 2 P.M and the rosary will be prayed at 7 P.M Wednesday at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.
