Obituary: Janet Parker Ostrom, 54, Manhattan, KS passed away Thursday, June 16, 2005 in her home after an extended illness.
She was born February 27, 1951 at Williamsport, PA, the daughter of Llewlyn and Myrtle Holcomb Parker. She was raised on the family dairy farm and attended schools in Liberty, PA, where she was active in music and sports.
She graduated from York College of Pennsylvania in 1973 with a BS in Elementary Education and in 1977 earned a Master’s Degree from Kansas State University.
She was united in marriage to Lon J. Ostrom on July 28, 1973 at Liberty. He survives of the home.
Janet was an elementary teacher for 32 years in the Junction City and Manhattan/Ogden schools districts. She was also a Title I Reading Specialist and most recently director and teacher of the College Hill Pre-school for the Manhattan/Ogden School District.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Manhattan. Her pastimes included spending time with family and friends, landscape gardening, cooking and enjoying life.
In addition to her husband, Janet is survived by two sons, Chad Ostrom, Brooklyn, NY and Kyle Ostrom, Lawrence, KS; her father and step-mother, Llewlyn and Venita Parker, Liberty, PA; two sisters, Carolyn Weaver, East Berlin, PA and Sharolyn High, Phoenix, MD; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her mother in 1968.
Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 20, 2005 in the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Reed officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date. Additional memorial services will be held in Liberty, PA.

Obituary: Shirley Anne Resser, 79, Manhattan, KS, and a former St. George, KS resident, passed away Sunday, June 5, 2005 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.
She was born July 1, 1925 at Rockford, IL, the daughter of Karel Gene Duncan and Bernice Lorraine Hatch Duncan. She spent most of her growing-up years in Des Moines, IA, where she attended the local schools and was a 1944 graduate of the North High School.
For nine years, she worked as a file clerk for Look Magazine in Des Moines.
She was united in marriage to Joseph Henry Resser, Jr. on June 17, 1951 at Des Moines. He preceded her in death on May 5, 1989.
Mrs. Resser lived in St. George from 1952 until moving to Manhattan in 1991. She was a homemaker and was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Happy-Go-Lucky Club, all of St. George.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Resser was preceded in death by an infant son, James Weiler Resser in 1961; her parents; one brother, Robert Duane Duncan; and a sister, Mary Frances Tullock.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Louise Johnson, Topeka, KS; four sons, Robert J. Resser, and his wife, Karen, Manhattan, David T. Resser, Manhattan, Daniel G. Resser, and his wife, Mary, Wamego and John H. Resser, Wilmore, KY; and eight grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 14, 2005 in the Fellowship Hall of the First United Methodist Church, St. George with Pastor Bob Spearow officiating. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 18, 2005 in the St. George Cemetery with the Rev. Ron Williams officiating.

Obituary: Eleanor M. (Carp) McComiskey, 75, Manhattan, KS passed away Sunday, June 5, 2005 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.
She was born May 14, 1930 at Ballston Spa, NY, the daughter of Ernest Carp and Ruth Castle Carp. She grew up in Ballston Spa, where she attended the local schools. She had also received a degree from the Philadelphia College of the Bible, Philadelphia, PA.
She was united in marriage to Thomas Edward McComiskey on June 22, 1957 at Haddon Heights, NJ. He preceded her in death in March 1997.
Mrs. McComiskey lived many years in Hawthorn Woods, IL and had just recently moved to Manhattan. She worked many years in the Financial Aid office at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and was a member of the Village Church of Barrington, IL. Since moving to Manhattan she had been attending the Grace Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. McComiskey was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Walter Carp.
Survivors include a daughter, Karen C. Pickard, and her husband, Scott, Manhattan; two sons, Douglas S. McComiskey, and his wife, Robin, Melbourne, Australia and Bruce T. McComiskey, and his wife, Cynthia, Birmingham, AL; three sisters, Gladys Kahler, Amsterdam, NY, and Frances Mithen and Margaret Wheeler, both of Ballston Spa, NY; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, June 9, 2005 in the Village Church of Barrington with the Rev. Dave Barber officiating. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. in the Windridge Memorial Park, Cary, IL.

Obituary: Brenda M. Wilson, 53, Manhattan, KS passed away Monday, May 30, 2005 in her home after an extended illness.
She was born January 9, 1952 at Detroit, MI, the daughter of Robert Newman and Angeline F. Cogut Newman. She grew up in Detroit and attended the local schools.
She was united in marriage to Michael Dean Wilson on November 24, 1973 at Oscoda, MI. He survives of the home.
Brenda lived in Oscoda from 1973-1984 and in Knob Noster, MO from 1984-1986 before moving to Manhattan in January 1986. She worked many years as a retail manager for the Army/Air Force Exchange System (AAFES).
She was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Manhattan.
In addition to her husband, Brenda is survived by a daughter, Christie Marie Romig, Manhattan; her mother, Angie Pierce, Saluda, NC; one brother, David Newman, San Diego, CA; three sisters, Valerie Alday, Bellevue, NE, Nancy Harris, Macon, GA and Theresa Erickson, Oscoda, MI; and three granddaughters, Leandra Danyelle Hainey, Titania Jo Hainey and Cyra Marie Hainey.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 7, 2005 in the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Manhattan with Father Lawrence Grennan as celebrant. Cremation will follow with inurnment at a later date in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

Obituary: Leland F. Newman, 77, St. George, KS passed away in Manhattan on Thursday, June 2, 2005.
He was born October 12, 1927 at Ringwood, OK, the son of Floyd L. Newman and Hazel O. Oakley Newman. He grew up in Ringwood, where he attended the local schools and was a 1947 graduate of the Ringwood High School.
Mr. Newman was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Korea during the Korean Conflict.
He was united in marriage to Reta L. Shipley on October 11, 1952 at Enid, OK. She survives of the home.
Mr. Newman worked for Pillsbury Mills for over 22 years and was an assistant manager and manager for the Graves Truck Lines for over 12 years. He and his wife, Reta, owned and operated the LE-RE Pottery Store, out of their home for many years. He retired in 1993. The Newmans had been a resident of the St. George area since 1969.
Mr. Newman was a member of the Enid Free Methodist Church and while living in Oklahoma, served on the church Board and held many other offices.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Lenis, Marvin, Merlin and Rayford Newman; and one sister, Arlene Watson.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Newman is survived by four sons, Milton Linn Newman, and wife, Linda and L. Eugene Newman, and wife, Cindy, all of St. George, Brent L. Newman, and wife, Linda, Louisiana, MO and Kevin J. Newman, and wife, Kathy, Lee’s Summit, MO; three brothers, Vernon Newman, Cleo Springs, OK, Donald Newman, San Antonio, TX and Milo Newman, Arkansas City, KS; two sisters, Bernice Myers, Saginaw, TX and Virginia Chestman , St. Louis, MO; nine grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.
Graveside services, with military honors, will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, June 6, 2005 in the Sedalia Cemetery, northwest of Manhattan, with the Rev. Neal Hartzell officiating. Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m., Monday in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan.

Obituary: John J. McCann, 62, Manhattan, KS passed away Saturday, May 14, 2005 in his home after an extended illness.
He was born March 17, 1943 at Rahway, NJ, the son of George Peter McCann, Sr. and Elizabeth M. Gensinger McCann. He grew up in Rahway and attended the local schools.
John moved to the Alma and Lake Wabaunsee areas of Kansas in 1964 and had been a resident of Manhattan since August 2004. He worked as a licensed Certified Medical Technician at the Alma Nursing Home for many years and was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Manhattan.
He was united in marriage to Deborah L. Baerg on January 5, 1979 at Salina. She survives of the home.
In addition to his wife, John is survived by his mother, Elizabeth Miller, Carteret, NJ; his step parents, Grant and Lizella Niven, Topeka; three brothers, George Peters McCann, Jr., St. Petersburg, FL, Edward Chapman, Woodbridge, VA and Reynolds Chapman; and two sisters, Florence Schleeh, Toms River, NJ and Jeanette Higgins, Winfield Park, NJ.
Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, May 23, 2005 in the First United Methodist Church, Manhattan with the Rev. Jim Reed officiating. Inurnment will be at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 24, 2005 in the Inman Cemetery, Inman, KS.

She was born April 10, 1923 at Murphy, OK, the daughter of Ivey L. Abernathy and Elsie G. Southerland Abernathy. She grew up in Hugo, OK, where she attended the local schools and was a 1942 graduate of the Grant, OK High School.
She was a homemaker and had been a resident of the Manhattan area since 1967.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 51 years, Wayne Ervin Hutchings; a daughter Cynthia Kathleen Hutchings; and four siblings, Ova Baker, Dovie McNeal, Floyd Abernathy and Wylie Abernathy.
Survivors include a brother, Lynn Abernathy, Hugo, OK; five children, Michael (Donna) Hutchings, Springfield, VA, Dale (Linda) Hutchings, Duluth, GA, Randy Hutchings, Manhattan, Sherri (Doug) Underwood, Wichita and David (Tonya) Hutchings, Topeka; 11 grandchildren, Hollye, Steven, Nona, Matthew, Cynthia, Christopher, Jennifer, Sarah, Rachel, Bruce and Britni; five great grandchildren, Amanda, Cheyene, Hailey, Daniela and Jadyn; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
