Obituary: Linda J. Alexander 59, Manhattan, KS passed away Thursday, April 28, 2005 in the Stoneybrook Health Care Center, Manhattan.

She was born May 7, 1945 at Charlotte, NC, one of 12 children born to Albert Minton and Dinah Askew Minton. She grew up the Denver, CO area, where she attended the local schools and was a graduate of the Manuel High School. In May 2004, she received her Bachelor of Arts (?) Degree in ???? from Washburn University, Topeka. She had been a longtime Manhattan resident.

She was united in marriage to Curtis S. “Slick: Harris in 1968 at Manhattan. They were later divorced. She was also married to Jerome Alexander. They were divorced.

Linda worked for many years as a machine operator for the Parker Hannifin Corporation and was a member of the Bethel A.M.E. Church, Manhattan.

She is survived by a son, Gerald “Jerry” J. Harris, Atlanta, GA; two brothers, Charles Minton, Denver, CO and Curtis Minton, Brooklyn, NY; two sisters, Shirley Ann Minton, Florida and Katie M. Carter, Denver; a close friend, Arlene Cole, Manhattan; and many nephews and nieces.

Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 5, 2005 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with the Rev. Penny Pitchford (?) officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

Obituary: Fred Harold Ernst, 101, passed away Friday, April 22, 2005 in Tampa, Florida.

He was born January 16, 1904 in Junction City, KS, the son of Amos G. Ernst and Anna L. Ford Ernst. He graduated from Hartford High School, Hartford, KS and received his B.S. in Industrial Arts and Printing from Pittsburg State College, Pittsburg, KS. He was a Manhattan resident from 1927 through 1989 when he retired to Florida. Mr. Ernst was a teacher of Printing and Industrial Arts in the Manhattan Junior and Senior High Schools from 1927-1946. He was a residential contractor in Manhattan from 1946-1975, which included development and all of the houses in the Ernst Addition along Edgerton Ave. and Meadowmere Circle as well as many other projects in and around Manhattan.

He was united in marriage to his family friend Rachel A. Williams in 1982. She survives.

Mr. Ernst was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church, where he was a Life Deacon, and for many years belonged to the Manhattan Lions Club, the United Commercial Travelers, and College Hill Garden Club.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, F. Gene Ernst, Manhattan; a stepdaughter, Sandra Williams Ernst Moriarty, her husband, Tom Duncan, Boulder, CO; three grandsons; Steve Ernst, Pocatello, ID, Jack Ernst, Manhattan and Tom Ernst, Thornton, CO; three great grandsons, Andrew, Patrick and Adam Ernst; two great granddaughter, ChiAnne McGrew and Sally Saucedo; two great great grandsons; and one great great granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Fredrick Ernst in 1981; and an infant daughter, Marianna Joyce in 1936.

Memorial Services were held in Tampa earlier in April. Memorial Services will be at 2:30 p.m., Friday, May 6, 2005 at the First Christian Church, Manhattan, with Rev. Neil Engle officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Sunset Cemetery.

The family of Fred H. Ernst suggests memorials can be made to the First Christian Church in lieu of flowers and may be left in care of the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, 1317 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan 66502.

Obituary: Trudy Thomas, 81, Manhattan, KS passed away Friday, June 30, 2006 in the Stoneybrook Health Care Center, Manhattan.

She was born February 3, 1925 at Grove Hill, AL, the daughter of George Thomas and Lillie Pope Thomas. She grew up in Mobile, AL and attended the local schools. She spent many years in Mobile and Seaford, Delaware before moving to Manhattan in August 1994.

She was a member of the Fellowship Temple, Church of God in Christ, Manhattan.

Survivors include four sons, John Thomas, and his wife, Gladys, Manhattan, Joe E. Thomas, Seaford, DE, Harold Smith, Hartford, CT and Ambrose Burke, Atlanta, GA; a brother, George Thomas, Mobile, AL; a sister, Frances Thomas Hawthorne, Thomasville, AL; seven grandchildren; four step grandchildren; and a host of great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers; and two sisters.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, July 6, 2006 in the Fellowship Temple, Church of God in Christ with the Rev. Dr. James Boyer officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

Obituary: Lawrence “Larry” Winfield Norvell, music educator, 86, Manhattan, KS passed away Thursday, June 29, 2006 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.

He was born January 13, 1920 at West Medford, MA, the son of the Rev. Philip D. Norvell and Amy Reeve Norvell. Being the son of a minister, Larry grew up in several communities in Colorado and Kansas, before graduating from the Topeka High School in 1937. In 1942, he received a B.S. degree in Education and in 1946 a B.S. degree in Music from Kansas State Teacher’s College, Emporia. He later received an M.S. degree in Music Education from Kansas State University in 1959.

He was united in marriage to Joy Socolofsky on May 29, 1943 at Marion, KS. She survives of the home.

Larry received his U.S. Navy Commission, after attending the Officer Candidate School, at Notre Dame University in 1943 and served as a Sound Officer aboard the destroyer, USS Erben, in the South Pacific Theatre during World War II. After the war, he taught three years in the Moran, KS school system before accepting the position of Band Director and Coordinator of Music for the Manhattan Public Schools. He retired in 1985 after 36 years with USD 383.

Larry was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Manhattan Lions Club, MAREA (Manhattan Area Retired Educators Association) and the Pearce-Keller American Legion Post No. 17. He served on the Kansas Music Educators Association board, is a past president of District III, and was instrumental in the founding of the Kansas Bandmasters Association. He helped establish the KSU Alumni Band and was secretary-treasurer. He served extensively as a clinician, guest conductor and adjudicator throughout the state. He directed the Kansas All-State Lions Band in 1957, 1963, 1977 and 1984 and served as the Manhattan Municipal Band director for 45 years.

The City of Manhattan declared March 4, 1985 as “Larry Norvell Day” in recognition of his retirement from teaching. Larry received a commendation from the Manhattan Board of Education, a Kansas Federated Music Club citation, was nominated for the Emporia State University Distinguished Alumni Award and was inducted in the Kansas Teachers Hall of Fame.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Philip J. Norvell; and two sisters, Ruth Taylor and Dorothy Goodale.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Norvell is survived by a daughter, Nancy Fruetel, and her husband, David, Nashville, TN; three sons, Mark L. Norvell, and his wife, Paula, Tulsa, OK, Bruce W. Norvell, and his wife, Kay, Atlanta, GA and Gary P. Norvell, and his wife, Colleen Boothby, Takoma Park, MD; 11 grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Monday, July 3, 2006 in the First United Methodist Church, Manhattan with the Rev. Jim Reed officiating. Private family graveside services will be at a later date in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

Obituary: Rosalie Marie Pfaff, 82, Manhattan, KS passed away Sunday, June 18, 2006 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.

She was born February 9, 1924, on the family farm near Milford, KS, the daughter of Arthur Luthi and Bertha Ratz Luthi. She grew up in the Milford area, where she attended the local schools and was a graduate of the Riley High School, Riley, KS. She later attended Emporia Teachers College and taught schools at Wheaton and Peach Grove.

She was united in marriage to Joy B. Pfaff on June 1, 1947 at Barnes, KS. He preceded her in death on May 23, 2001.

Mr. and Mrs. Pfaff farmed in the Peach Grove area for many years. Mrs. Pfaff also cooked at the Randolph Café and later for the Blue Valley School District. After moving to Manhattan in 1977, Mrs. Pfaff worked as a baker at the Kansas State University Union until her retirement in 1996.

She was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Manhattan and the Winkler Willing Workers. She volunteered many hours to the Manhattan RSVP and the food pantry at the church. Her hobbies included traveling, reading and cooking for her family.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Pfaff was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Ottie Luthi, Sam Luthi and a half-brother, Ken Luthi.

Survivors include three daughters, Saundra Hennigh, and her husband, Dale, Westmoreland, KS, Joyce Johns, and her husband, Jim, Lane, KS and Sheila Hagnauer, and her husband, Steve, Manhattan; a sister, Martha Kersten, Omaha, NE; nine grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 22, 2006 in the First Lutheran Church, Manhattan with the Rev. Dr. Keith E. Wiens officiating. Burial will follow in the St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, northwest of Randolph, KS.

Obituary: Rosezella M. Potter, 63, Manhattan, KS passed away Wednesday, June 14, 2006 at her home after an extended illness.

She was born October 20, 1942 at Leesville, LA, the daughter of Charlie H. Primm and Cora Brubaker Primm. She grew up in Manhattan, where she attended the local schools and was a 1961 graduate of the Manhattan High School. She had been a lifelong Manhattan area resident.

She was married to James Holmes. He preceded her in death. On October 25, 1980, she was united in marriage to Edward W. Potter in Wichita.

Mrs. Potter worked for Kansas State University for over 22 years, retiring as a Custodial Supervisor in February 2005. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Manhattan.

Survivors include her husband, Edward, Manhattan; two sons, Charles Holmes and Frank Holmes, both of Manhattan; three daughters, Debra Groggins and Glenda Holmes, both of Manhattan and Kimberley Davis, Ft. Worth, TX; a stepson, Delbert Potter, Gilbert, SC; two brothers, George Primm, Athens, GA and James Primm, Junction City, KS; six grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Chuck Primm.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 17, 2006 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with Pastor Don Yancheson officiating. Burial will follow in the Valley View Memorial Gardens, Manhattan.

Obituary: Connie Gennett Schwandt, 48, Manhattan, KS passed away Saturday, June 3, 2006 in her home, after an extended illness.

She was born July 24, 1957 at Topeka, KS, the daughter of James Gennett, Jr. and Donna Marten Gennett. She was a graduate of the Onaga, KS High School in 1975. She attended Emporia State University, where she received her BS in Elementary Education and a Masters in Special Education. While at Emporia, she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority.

She was united in marriage to Gary Schwandt on May 27, 1978 at Duluth, KS. He survives of the home.

Connie was an elementary and special education teacher for over 26 years. She spent nine years in the Riley County School District before coming to the Manhattan/Ogden school district. She was a very dedicated teacher who loved working with children.

She was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church in Manhattan. Her pastimes included reading, gardening, boating and attending sporting events. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and being a mom.

In addition to her husband, Connie is survived by a son, Matt Schwandt, attending the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, CO; a daughter, Sarah Schwandt, attending Rockhurst University, Kansas City, MO; her mother, Donna Gennett, Onaga, KS; a sister, Tammy Handley and her husband, Mike, Onaga, KS; and her mother-in-law, Dorothy Guth, Wamego, KS; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 7, 2006 in the First Lutheran Church, 930 Poyntz, Manhattan with the Rev. Michael Ide officiating. Graveside services will be at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday in the Onaga Cemetery, Onaga, KS.

Obituary: Francis J. Burke, 88, Manhattan, KS passed away Monday, May 29, 2006 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.

He was born March 19, 1918 at Kimeo, KS, the son of John Francis Burke and Margaret Elizabeth Crimmins Burke. He grew up on the family farm near Kimeo and attended the local schools. He later farmed in the Greenleaf, KS area for many years.

He was a veteran of the World War II, serving as a radio man with the U.S. Army in the South Pacific Theatre. He was discharged at the rank of Sergeant in August 1945.

After the war, Mr. Burke settled in Manhattan, where he worked 10 years at the Skelly Service Station in Aggieville and from 1956 until his retirement in 1976 was a mechanic with the Goetsch-Irvine Chrysler Motor Company.

He was united in marriage to Mavis Eileen Bowker on May 2, 1951 at Manhattan. She preceded him in death on February 14, 1997.

Mr. Burke was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council No. 1832, AARP, and the Lee Pierson V.F.W. Post No 1786, all of Manhattan.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Burke was preceded in death by two sons, Donald LeRoy Burke and infant John Burke; his parents; a brother, Leo Burke; and three sisters, Dorothy Matthews, Rita Katz and infant, Ruth Ann Burke.

Survivors include two sons, Steven Joseph Burke and Richard Francis Burke, both of Manhattan; two daughters, Janet Marie Sells, and her husband, Duane and Karen Elizabeth McVey, and her husband, Kenneth, all of Manhattan; a brother, Paul F. Burke, Manhattan; two sisters, Irene Dwyer, Las Vegas, NV and Ann Kathleen Harrington, Manhattan; seven grandchildren, Christi Clark, Amber Cole, Robert Burke, Kelli McVey, David Sells, Kyle McVey and Daniel Sells; and five great grandchildren, Austen Doyal, Rebekah Doyal, Aaron Clark, Haleigh Cole and Brady Cole.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 1, 2006 in the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Manhattan. Burial, with military honors, will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.
