Marion – Eva Peters, 65, died June 4, 2015 at Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita. She was born December 22, 1949 to William and Patty (Dial) David in Southern, California. She married Roger Peters August 20, 2012 at Hillsboro Cove. Survivors include: husband, Roger Peters of Marion; son, Jack Nanney of Houston, Texas; daughter, Tammy McCaskey of Locus Springs, Oklahoma; brothers, Roger and Kieth; sisters, Kay, Kim, Connie, and Charla; 3 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. ERNEST EDIGER

PORTLAND, Ore. — Ernest Ediger, 84, died Saturday (May 25, 2002) at a nursing home in Portland, Ore.

He was born Oct. 16, 1917, to Herman K. and Katherina (Tena) Buller Ediger. He married Margaret Coburn of Maryland. She survives.

He attended school in Hutchinson and graduated from Buhler High School in 1936. While attending Buhler High School he was chosen to design the Buhler Crusader emblem. He later attended Bethel College for three and a half years before World War II interrupted his studies. He lived with his wife for a number of years in Homestead, Fla., where he worked in experimental programs. He later transferred to Portland to a primate center where he was involved with scientific experiments and programs.

Other survivors include: four sons, Donald Ediger, Michael Ediger, Robert Ediger and Joel Ediger; three daughters-in-law; nine grandsons and two granddaughters; and Selma Ediger Reusser of Hesston.

Memorials may be sent to the local hospice chapter of the donor’s choice.

Bessie Penner – Vogt
d. November 15, 2014

Wichita – Bessie Penner – Vogt, 92 died November 15, 2014 at Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita. She was born June 25, 1922 to David and Martha (Litke) Leppke rural Hillsboro. Survivors include: daughter, Dianne (Glenn) Lygrisse of Wichita; son, Ronald (Melanie) Penner of Bel Aire; brother, David Leppke of Humboldt; 4 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Hillsboro – Juanita Faye McCombs, 76, died May 24, 2015 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. She was born February 20, 1939 to Joseph and Lola (Rose) Tracy at Yates Center, Kansas. She was the Laundry Supervisor at Salem Home. She married Elmer McCombs Sr. June 29, 1957 at Wichita. Survivors include: sons, Elmer McCombs of Hillsboro; daughters, Barbara Diaz of Lehigh, Nancy Gibson of Hillsboro, Christine Huffman of Wichita, Stephanie Newman of Valley Center; brother, Frank Williams of Wichita; 10 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Predeceased by her husband, son Tracy McCombs, 3 brothers, 5 sisters, 1 grandson, and 1 granddaughter. Paul Whomans
(November 4, 1931 - April 15, 2012)

Paul C. Whomans, 80, of Newton, died Sunday (April 15, 2012) at the Newton Medical Center.

He was born on November 4, 1931 in Wellington, Ks., the son of John and Florence Myers Whomans. The family moved to Newton in 1940. Paul graduated from Newton High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.

After being discharged from the military, Paul returned to Newton. He worked for several years for the Brunswick Company, traveling across the country resurfacing pool tables. Paul later went to work for the Hesston Corporation where he remained until retiring.

Survivors include brothers Robert Whomans and wife Mary Ann, Lee Allison and wife Judy, Howard Allison and wife Becky, Arthur “Tree” Allison and wife Sandi all of Newton; sisters Marjorie Keazer and husband Curtis of Newton, Rose Allison and husband Nick Kyle of Carthage, Mo., Maxine O’Neill and spouse Lynn Auernheimer of Canton, Ks.;his step-mother Hazel Whomans of Hutchinson;along with sisters Joyce Lancaster of Hutchinson and Mary Ann Yahnke of Norwich, Ks.; several nieces and nephews including his niece and caretaker Diane Schrag of Newton.

Paul is preceded in death by his father John, mother Florence Allison; and step-father Detmer Allison.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday (April 18, 2012) at the GreenwoodCemeteryin Newton.

Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday 1pm til 8pm where the family will receive friends between 6 and 8.

A memorial has been established with the Caring Hands Humane Society of Newton, contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, Ks. 67114

Hillsboro – JoAnn Wall, 63, died March 16 2015 at Galichia Heart Hospital in Wichita. She was born September 27, 1951 to Raymond and Celia (Lugbill) Hein in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She married Richard Wall May 26, 1973 in Hillsboro. Survivors include: daughters, Jenny (Kiyoshi) Wall Yamazaki of Albany, Georgia, Julie (Travis) Beam of Elkhart, Indiana; 2 grandchildren. Predeceased by her husband in 2005 and one brother, Alan Hein. Celebration of Life Service will be 4:00 p.m. Friday, March 20, 2015 at The Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church officiated by Pastor Nadine Friesen. ESTELLA A. GARDNER

McPHERSON — Estella A. Gardner, 74, died May 31, 2002, at Memorial Hospital, McPherson. She was the mother of David Cyphers of Hesston.

She was born May 11, 1928, at Clifton, the daughter of Howard Fred and Caroline Alice Hohr Lyons. A resident of McPherson since 1974, moving from Concordia, she was a homemaker, and former waitress at McPherson Elks Lodge.

She attended First Church of the Nazarene, was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, both of McPherson, and Eagles Lodge, Omaha, Neb.

On Jan. 19, 1946, she married Harold Cyphers at Belleville.

Other survivors include: another son, Dannie Cyphers, Andover; four daughters, Darlene Johnson, Galva, Della Keough, McPherson, Diana Sykes, Galva, and Doris Wells, Moundridge; two brothers, Donald Lyons, Topeka, and Howard Lyons, Clifton; two sisters, Laura Rundle, and Doris Blackburn, both of Clifton; 19 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: a grandson; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Raymond Lyons; and a sister, Freda Jordan.

Funeral was at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Church of the Nazarene, McPherson, with the Rev. Mark Glover presiding. Burial was in the New Gottland Lutheran Cemetery, rural McPherson.

Memorials may be sent to the church, in care of Stockham Family Funeral Home, McPherson.

Frannie Rempel
d. March 31, 2015

Hillsboro – Frannie Rempel, 87, died March 31, 2015 at Parkside Home in Hillsboro. She was born November 21, 1927 in Larned, Kansas to Chester and Susie (Smith) Siebert. She married Lloyd Rempel October 9, 1949 at Pawnee Rock, Kansas. She was a homemaker and C.N.A. Survivors include: sons, Bruce Rempel of Newton, Steve Rempel of Newton; daughters, Debby Rempel of Wichita, Nancy (Kenton) Kaufman of Walton; 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; Daughter in laws, Aleta Markley of Newton, Diana Rempel of Newton; Step brothers, Howard (Lavella) Delaplane of Ames, Oklahoma, Bob (Lena) Delaplane of Sweden. Predeceased by her husband in 1996; son, Michael Rempel in 2008. Frances Naomi Helmer
d. May 10, 2015

Hillsboro – Frances Naomi Helmer, 91, died May 10, 2015 in Hillsboro. She was born February 1, 1924 in Marion, Kansas to Howard and Mildred (Childs) Richmond. She married Harry Helmer in Wichita. She was a homemaker. Survivors include: son, Larry (Judy) Helmer of Hillsboro; daughters, Karen Sklenar of Hillsboro, Diana (Craig) Dodd of Hillsboro, Debra (Tim) Kaufman of Rural Durham, Shelley (Kent) Schaede of Owasso, Oklahoma; brother, Kent Richmond of Rural Marion; sister, Marilyn Morris of Elk City, Oklahoma; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. GRACE HELEN BRENNEMAN

Grace Helen (Plank) Brenneman, 93, Schowalter Villa, Hesston, died Thursday (May 30) at Schowalter Villa.

She was born July 16, 1908, to Perry and Minnie Plank in Harper.

She married Joseph E. Brenneman in Tofield, Alberta, Canada, on Oct. 8, 1933. They moved to a farm near Hesston in 1943 and into town in 1965.

She was a member of the Hesston Mennonite Church where she served as Sunday school and Bible school superintendent and teacher, in WMSC, and as church hostess. She also worked at Northview Developmental Services and as a cook for USD 460. Following their retirement, she and her husband volunteered for many years at Rio Grande Bible Institute, Edinburg, Texas, during the winters.

Survivors include a daughter, Thelma Lais, Hesston; two sons, Howard, Goshen, Ind., and Joe, Hesston; one brother, Glen Plank, Wichita; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; three brothers, Cecil, Don and Ned; and four sisters, Glada, Esther, Gladys and Ruby.

Memorial service was Monday (June 3) at Hesston Mennonite Church.

Miller Funeral Home, Hesston, was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be given to Schowalter Villa or Rio Grande Bible Institute in care of the funeral home.

Bernice Bartel
d. March 23, 2013

Hillsboro – Bernice Bartel, 96, died March 23, 2013 at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro. She was born August 26, 1916 North of Hillsboro. The daughter of Benjamin A. and Mary (Dirks) Unruh. She was a homemaker. She married Walter J. Bartel September 9, 1938 at Johannestal Mennonite Church rural Hillsboro. Survivors include: son, James (Sharon) Bartel of rural Hillsboro, Kansas; 2 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren. Predeceased by her husband in 2001 and a daughter, Jeanette Leuszler in 1975. Celebration of life Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at Trinity Mennonite Church at 11:00 a.m. Burial 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at JohannestalCemeteryrural Hillsboro. Family will receive guests from 6 to 8 Tuesday at Jost Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Memorials to Trinity Mennonite Church in care of the Funeral home.

Evelyn J. Franz Lohrentz, 77

Evelyn J. Franz Lohrentz was born Dec. 4, 1937, in Hutchinson.

She was the daughter of Peter T. and Selma (Plett) Franz.

Many fond memories were made working and playing with her sisters Lovella and Verna Mae.

She was preceded in death by a stillborn sister, Mary Lou, and her sister, Verna Mae.

Evelyn attended Inman schools and later received a teaching degree from Bethel College. She taught first and second grades at Willis School in western Harvey County then in Hesston for ten years.

On June 4, 1960, she married Howard R. Lohrentz at Hebron Mennonite Church near Buhler. They built their home in Hesston in 1964 and made that house a home for 50 years.

She became a professional florist first buying a flower shop and later working as a floral designer at Country Gardens. Her final professional job was as an administrative assistant at Dewayne Pauls Tax Office.

Evelyn was a loving mother, wife and friend who had a way of making everyone feel special. A card game was never hard to find as her door was always open to friends and family.

She was an avid gardener and artist with a deep appreciation for the fine arts. Active in the church Evelyn played piano and sang in choir. In later years Evelyn continued to be active in the church, her Sunday school, church board and volunteer works.

In August, Howard and Evelyn moved to a new home in the retirement development in Hesston where they continued to be active with friends and family.

Evelyn was taken to the heavenly gardens on Friday, May 15, 2015.

Those who survive her and cherish her in their hearts are loving husband Howard; children, Janelle (Denis) Levitt of Tucson; Greg (Jane) Lohrentz of Manhattan; grandchildren Matthew, Melanie, Alexa Kate and Amanda. She is also survived by one sister, Lovella (Albert) Franz of Buhler.

Family greeted friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, at Dyck Arboretum, Hesston.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Friday, at Bethel College Mennonite Church, Newton.

Memorials may be sent to the Bethel College in care of Miller-Ott Funeral Home, Hesston.

Linda M. Jantz
d. January 5, 2015

Hillsboro – Linda M. Jantz, 90, died January 5, 2015 at Parkside Home in Hillsboro. She was born February 5, 1924 to John J. and Anna (Lehrman) at Goessel. Survivors include: sons, Bob (Judy) Jantz of Hillsboro, Don (Susan) Jantz of Abilene, Vernon Jantz of Wichita; daughter, Rhoda Rafaelsen of McPherson; 6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Predeceased by her husband, Art Jantz in 2014. Celebration of Life Service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 8, 2015 at First Mennonite Church in Hillsboro officiated by Pastor Susan Jantzen. Interment will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Haven of RestCemeteryrural Hillsboro. Family will receive guests from 5 to 7 Wednesday at Jost Funeral Home in Hillsboro.
