OLMITZ - Everett S. Brewer, 89, died Jan. 18 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. He was born April 12, 1916, at McCracken, the son of Lester Finn and Dora Mae (Aldrich) Brewer. He married
Bernice Cerin on June 19, 1941, at Yuma, Ariz. She died March 25, 1981. A resident of Olmitz since 1982, coming from El Cerrito, Calif., he retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years of service, served in the Navy Fleet Reserves for 10 years and was then employed as a civilian with the U.S. government as a certified boiler inspector and engineer. Brewer was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion in California, a member of the Clara Barton Foundation and a benefactor to many children's organizations. He was of the Christian faith. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor and received the Good Conduct Medal, along with the Korean, United Nation and National Defense medals. Survivors include a son, Steve Brewer of El Cerrito, Calif.; a brother, Jack Brewer of Hogansville, Ga.; two sisters, La Dene Broughton of Larned and Dolores Lindsay of Olmitz; three grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sheila Brewer, and two sisters, Vera Branyan and Elva Schugart. Services were Saturday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington with the Rev. Ultan Murphy officiating. Military graveside rites were conducted at the Hoisington cemetery in Hoisington by the U.S. Navy and American Legion Post No. 286 and VFW Post No. 7428. Memorials are suggested to Clara Barton Foundation, in care of the funeral home.

John Benedict Mazouch, newborn son of Michael and Lindsay Mazouch, of Great Bend, died Jan. 19, 2006, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. He is survived by his grandparents, Gene and Mary Ann Mazouch, Great Bend, Rod Pastor, Arlington, Texas, and Dorothy Pastor, Grandview, Texas; great-grandparents, Viola Axman, Olmitz, Billy G. Elwood, Grandview, Texas, and Mary Pastor, Pittsburgh, Pa.; one aunt, Erika Soder and husband Erik, Highlands Ranch, Colo.; and four uncles, Chris Mazouch and Greg Mazouch, both of Great Bend, Stephen Mazouch and wife Teresa, Overland Park, and Matthew Mazouch, Hays. He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents: John and Virginia Mazouch, Benedict Axman, Helga Elwood and Nicholas Pastor. Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father Charles Mazouch and Father Ted Stoecklein officiating. Sister Amadea Hauser OP

Sister Amadea Hauser, 84, died Thursday, Jan. 19, 2006, in the Dominican Sisters' convent infirmary, Great Bend, Kan. born March 6, 1921, at St. Leo, Kan., as Bertha Anna Hauser, Sister Amadea was the daughter of the late Edward and Mary Schnittker Hauser. She entered the Dominican Sisters' Community Aug. 29, 1935, and pronounced her first vows Aug. 17, 1938. She celebrated 65 years of religious profession in 2003. Sister Amadea began her ministerial life as a teacher in elementary parochial schools of Kansas, a ministry which she accomplished for seven years. Following her studies for medical technology, she served as a medical technologist for over 30 years, often supervising X-ray and Emergency Rooms in all four of the Dominican Sisters' hospitals: St. Joseph Memorial in Larned, Kan., St. Catherine in Garden City, Kan., Sacred Heart in Lamar, Colo., and Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. Sister Amadea's last ministry was as a receptionist at the motherhouse. She retired in 2000. Sister Amadea is survived by two brothers, Joseph Hauser of Odenton, Md., and Eugene Hauser of Nashville, Kan.; and three sisters, Eva Hauser of Lamar, Colo., Angela Scantlin of Wichita, Kan., and Sister Edith Marie of Great Bend. Sister Amadea's body will lie in state at the hospitality area of the Dominican Chapel of the Plains, 3600 Broadway, Great Bend, until the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23, with the Rev. Gerald Hammeke presiding. A wake service will be held at 7 tonight. Both the wake and the funeral service will be held at the convent, 3600 Broadway. Burial will be in the Sisters' Resurrection cemetery. Services for Alfred J. Yost, 75, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will be at Oak Hill cemetery. Mr. Yost died Saturday, Jan. 14, 2006, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He was born June 6, 1930, in Alexander, the son of Adam John and Lydia Georg Yost. He graduated from LaCrosse High School in 1948 and the Kansas City College of Mortuary Science in 1951. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict from January 1953 until January 1955. He had worked for the Lamb Funeral Home in Ottawa and the Culbertson Funeral Home in Wichita. In 1964 he purchased the Fisher Funeral Home in Wellington, which became Yost Funeral Home; he owned it for 13 years. He purchased the Rumsey Funeral Home in Lawrence in 1978, which later became Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory, where he worked until his death. He received a 50 Years of Service award in the funeral industry in 2001. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lawrence, the Sertoma Club of Lawrence, American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post 14, Ottawa Lodge No. 18 A.F. & A.M., Kansas Funeral Directors Assn., National Funeral Directors Assn. and the Lawrence Country Club. Fleda Ann 'Shorty' Drake on June 5, 1955, in Ottawa. She survives, of the home. Marvin W. Hicks, 74, of Great Bend, died Jan. 19 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born Oct. 6, 1931, at Nowata, Okla., the son of James and Lilly Adamson Hicks. He married
Sharon Eckert on Jan. 8, 1955, at Great Bend. He was an oilfield roustabout and pumper, retiring from BHP Inc. He had been a Great Bend resident since 1975, coming from Hays. Hicks was a Korean War veteran, serving with the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Elks Lodge No. 1127 and American Legion Argonne Post 180, all of Great Bend, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7428, Hoisington. Survivors include his wife, Sharon, of the home; two sons, Doug Hicks and wife Vickie, Hays, Kan., and Curtis Hicks, Wichita, Kan.; daughter, Paula Spofford and husband Jim, Conway, NH; two brothers, Max Hicks and wife Betty, Hoisington, Kan., and Alva Hicks and wife Virginia, Swansboro, NC; two sisters, Pauline Wilson, Nowata, Okla., and Opal Heape and husband Harry, Sallisaw, Okla.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. CASPER, Wyo. - Memorial services for Elizabeth G. Taylor, 77, formerly of Great Bend, will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006, at Bustard's Funeral Home by Pastor Rob Peterson. She passed away on Jan. 14, 2006, at the Central Wyoming Hospice Home in Casper. Mrs. Taylor was born on May 2, 1928, in Great Bend, Kan., the daughter of Ira L. and Inez (Davis) Thomason. She was raised and attended school in Great Bend. On May 30, 1951, she married
G.V. Taylor in Chase, Kan., and the couple's union was blessed with four children. She moved to Casper in 1978. Her interests included taking care of her family, reading, singing, sewing, going places, and visiting with friends and family. She possessed a great sense of humor and loved her family dearly. Early on, Elizabeth was a hard worker, performing housekeeping and taking in ironing. During her later years, she had Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Survivors include her two daughters, Arlydia Kay Briscoe of Cody, Wyo., and Llewetta Windsor of Casper; her son George V. Taylor III of Casper; her four grandsons, Charles Henderson Jr., Reggie Henderson and George Windsor, all of Casper, and Jerry D. Briscoe of Shell, Wyo.; and her sister Darlene Creacy of Great Bend, Kan. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one daughter, one granddaughter, two brothers and three sisters. Charlene C. Williams, 78, of Great Bend, died Jan. 18 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born Oct. 24, 1927, at Cresco, Iowa, on a farm, the daughter of Charles 'Sam' and Clara E. VanDan Acker Wonsetler. A resident of Great Bend since 2000, formerly of Hutchinson and Larned, she was a retired secretary at the Larned State Hospital until she retired in 1980. She was a graduate of Larned High School, class of 1945. She married
William Oetken on July 22, 1947 at Albert. He died Dec. 1, 1968. On Feb. 23, 1980, she married
Donald Williams at Larned. Mrs. Williams was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Great Bend. Survivors include her husband of the home; three sons, Steve Oetken of Great Bend, Bob Oetken of Sealy, Texas, and Charles Oetken of Larned; a daughter, Marcia French of Great Bend; four step-daughters, Kathy Weaver, Debra Miller and Velma Colorado all of Lyons and Anita Gates of Memphis, Tenn.; one brother, Charles M. Wonsetler of Larned; one sister, Mary Spence of Lewis; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and 30 step-grand and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Kevin and David Oetken; two brothers, Robert and Remigius 'Bud' Wonsetler; and two sisters, Savanah and Lavita Wonsetler. Cremation has taken place. EVERETT, Wash. - Fern Nairn Walden, 98, died Jan. 12, 2006, at her home in Alaska. She was born Sept. 20, 1908, in Barton County, the daughter of John L. and Blanche Ewing Nairn. She was a homemaker, and lived most of her life in Everett, Wash. Survivors include a son, Dennis Walden of Alaska; a sister, Elva Petez of Overland Park; brothers John W. Nairn of Arroyo Grande, Calif., Loren R. Nairn and Nolen Gene Nairn of Great Bend; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Walden, who died in 1978. Services were held at the Floral Hills Mortuary in Everett, Wash., on Jan. 19.

Robert L. Hachenberger on Nov. 1, 1946, in Hutchinson, Kan. He died May 12, 1998. A resident of Great Bend since 1982, coming from Mobile, Ala., she was a homemaker, beloved wife, mother and grandmother. Mrs. Hachenberger was a member of First Christian Church and the American Legion Auxiliary, both of Great Bend. Survivors include a daughter, Sharon and husband William R. Ward, Dallas, Texas; a grandson, Robert Blake Ward; and a granddaughter, Katherine R. Ward. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Bobby Woodward and Ruth Heidebrecht. MCPHERSON - Alma Elizabeth (Betty) Romeiser, 91, of McPherson died Jan. 16, 2006, at The Cedars, McPherson. She was born Nov. 26, 1914 in Ottawa, Ill., the daughter of Allen A. and Ina (Hursh) Juelfs. She graduated from McPherson High School, class of 1932. She was a 1936 Graduate of McPherson College and received her MS in 1957 from Fort Hays State University and her ML in 1967 from Emporia Teachers College. She was a career teacher for 35 years, and taught in the Alexander, Bison and Otis school districts. She married
Rueben Conrad Romeiser, Sept. 3, 1943 in Wichita. He preceded her in death on March 16, 1988. Mrs. Romeiser was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Church Women, both of McPherson. She served as Worthy Matron of the Rush Center Chapter No. 262 of the Order of the Eastern Star, Rush Center, Kan. She later belonged to the Oriental Chapter No. 58 in McPherson. She was a member of the Alpha Lambda Chapter of the Delta Kappa Society International. She was a past PM and past District Aid to the Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the NEA, McPherson Area Retired Teachers Association (MARTA), Cosmos Club, Cedars Service Guild, and Esther Circle of the United Methodist Church. Survivors include, one brother, Paul H. Juelf, Blountville, Tenn., numerous nieces and nephews. COTTONWOOD, Ariz. - Bert Houston, 91, of Cottonwood, Ariz., died Jan. 2, 2006. He was born April 16, 1914, in Raymond, Kan. He was the former owner of Houston Welding Works in Claflin, Kan. He and his wife Evelyn retired to Colorado City, Colo., in 1967. They moved to Cottonwood in 1994. Bert was preceded in death by Evelyn in 1999. He is survived by two children, Rhea Demoy and Perry Houston, both residing in Montrose, Colo.; one brother, Don Houston of Horace, Kan.; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Nicholas J. Meyeres on Nov. 10, 1941, at Great Bend. He died Nov. 7, 1998. A Chase resident since 1944, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Meyeres was a member of the former St. Mary's Catholic Church of Chase and a current member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Lyons. Survivors include one son, Jim Meyeres, Chase; two daughters, Sharon Williams, Wichita, and Barbara Haxton, Newton; two sisters, LeRuth Musch, Wichita, and Shirley Fuller, Salida, Colo.; 10 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.
