Obituary: Francis V. King, Sr., 92, Manhattan, KS passed away Friday, November 24, 2006 in the Meadowlark Hills/Ptacek House, Manhattan.
He was born August 19, 1914 in Clay County, KS, the son of Vernon Dawes King and Phoebe Eunice Mottin King. He attended grade schools in Miltonvale and Clay Center and the Manhattan High School.
He was united in marriage to Mabel A. Kaump on April 20, 1957 at Manhattan. She survives.
Mr. King worked as a fireman at Ft. Riley, KS for 8 years and for over 25 years owned and operated King’s Rug and Carpet Cleaners in Manhattan. He retired in 1978.
He was a member of the First Christian Church, Lafayette Lodge No. 16, A.F. & A.M., Manhattan Shrine Club, Manhattan Tin Lizzies, and was a longtime member of the Sertoma Club, all of Manhattan. Other memberships included the Isis Shrine and the Scottish Rite and York Rite Bodies, all of Salina.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kay Ward; his parents; a brother, Loren E. “Corky” King; and a granddaughter, Deanna Patterson.
In addition to his wife, Mr. King is survived by a son, Francis “Frank” V. King, Jr., and his wife, Gwen, Bernalillo, NM; two daughters, Shirley Henton, and her husband, Harlin, Wamego, KS and Mary Stover, and her husband, Gerry, Sapulpa, OK; a brother, Glenn G. King, Topeka, KS; nine grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 29, 2006 in the First Christian Church, Manhattan with the Rev. Neil Engle officiating. Burial, with Masonic committal services, will follow in the Sunset Cemetery, Manhattan.
A family visitation will be from 7 until 8:00 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home.

Obituary: Mary Jacqueline “Jackie” McCoy died November 22, 2006 at Midland Hospice Care, Topeka, Kansas. She was born April 21, 1916 in Omaha, Nebraska, the daughter of Edith and Joseph Reynolds. She grew up in Omaha where she attended school and graduated from Central High School. She attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and was a life long member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.
Jackie was united in marriage to Max C McCoy in 1941. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this past September. They had lived in Omaha and Dallas before moving to Manhattan, KS in 1957. They had recently moved to Topeka to be closer to their children.
Early in her marriage, she was committed to raising her children but later worked at the RL Polk Company and for fifteen years at the USD 383 Board of Education in Manhattan.
Jackie was a fun loving, nice, and caring person. After retirement, she devoted much of her time to volunteer work for the First Presbyterian Church and Senior Citizen Center in Manhattan. Also, she enjoyed traveling, visiting with family, friends and especially shopping and being with her Daughter, Nancy. She enjoyed the many visits she made to Omaha and spending time with her sister, Joan. She was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church and a charter member of the PEO Sisterhood of Omaha.
She is survived by her husband Max of the home, her Son Gary and his friend (Diane) of Topeka, her daughter Nancy Koenig McCoy and her Husband (Ernie) of Hope, Kansas, her son Tom and his wife (Linda) of Valencia, California, her son Bob of Topeka, her son Steve and his fiancé (Penny) of Topeka, her sister Joan Reynolds of Omaha, 6 Grandchildren, and 2 Great Grand children.
Jackie was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister, Elinor Kraft from Oklahoma City.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 28, 2006 in the Irvin- Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with the Rev. R. C. “Cam” McConnell officiating. Burial will follow at the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Obituary: Arnold R. Tyson, 46, Manhattan, KS passed away Friday, November 17, 2006 in the K.U. Medical Center, Kansas City, KS.
He was born September 27, 1960 at Detroit, MI, the son of Benjamin W. Tyson and Lorita J. Alexander Tyson. He was a graduate of the Manhattan High School and had worked in the construction industry for many years.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Survivors include three sons, Tramaine Blaylock, and his wife, Wendy, Oklahoma City, OK, Devin Siebold, and his wife, Alishia, Hays, KS and Darius Tyson, Manhattan; his mother, Lorita J. Fore, and step-father, Walter L. Fore, Oklahoma City; two brothers, Tharon Tyson and Crystal Fore, both of Oklahoma City; a sister, Blythe Tyson, Dallas, TX; and four grandchildren.
Cremation is planned. Graveside inurnment services will be at 1:00 p.m., Monday, November 27, 2006 in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

Obituary: Charles R. Bissey, 72, Professor Emeritus of Architectural Engineering and Construction Science, passed away Saturday, November 18, 2006 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.
He was born January 9, 1934 in Huntingburg, Indiana, the son of Mike Bissey and Marie Morganthaler Bissey. As a small child, he moved with his family to Cheyenne, Wyoming, where he grew up and attended the local schools.
In 1957, he received his BS degree from Colorado State University and in 1961 received a MS degree from Kansas State University. He continued with his graduate work in Structures and Computer Science at the University of Massachusetts and served as an Assistant Professor from 1961-1969. He returned to K-State in September 1969 to become an Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Construction Science, College of Architecture & Design. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1971; participated in the transition of establishing the Department of Architectural Engineering and Construction Science in the College of Engineering in 1975 and retired as Professor in December 2002 after 33 years of dedicated service. He was bestowed the title of Professor Emeritus in January 2003.
Professor Bissey received the Hollis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching from the College of Engineering in 1980 and the University Amoco Foundation Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in 1982. He was active in college and university committee work as well as state and national professional society organizations. He was active in the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) and served as the ASEE Campus Activity Coordinator and on the ASEE Awards Committee. In 1983, he won the ASEE Outstanding Zone Campus Activity Coordinator and received the ASEE Western Electric Fund Award for Excellence in Instruction of Engineering Students in 1984.
Professor Bissey was a licensed engineer in the state of Kansas and was active in the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), Kansas Engineering Society and the Tri Valley Chapter of the Kansas Engineering Society, where he served as President in 1987 and as secretary/treasurer for many years. He was active in community affairs and even after retirement continued with his private engineering consulting practice.
He was a founding member of the Architectural Engineering Institute (AEI) and was designated Fellow by the AEI Board of Governors in 2001. He established the Architectural Engineering Honorary Society, Phi Alpha Epsilon and held honorary memberships in Sigma Lambda Chi, Tau Sigma Delta and Phi Eta Sigma. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, Manhattan, and at the time of his death was the District President for the United Methodist Men.
On June 27, 1958, in Wichita, Kansas, he was united in marriage to the former Rose Gallemore. She survives of the home. Mr. Bissey is also survived by a daughter, Pamela Lowdon, and her husband, Kelly, Lakewood, Colorado; a son, Jeff Bissey, and his wife, Julie, Orlando, Florida; a sister, Marilyn Faust, Cheyenne, Wyoming; and four grandchildren, Brett Bissey, Leah Bissey, Erin Lowdon and Kimberly Lowdon.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 22, 2006 in the First United Methodist Church, Manhattan with the Rev. Jim Reed officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

Obituary: Pauline Leota “Polly” Harlan died in her sleep Sunday morning at Stoneybrook Retirement Community. She was 99 years old.
Polly was born in Osage, Iowa, the youngest of eight children of Frank and Lillie E. Smith.
Polly and her family lived throughout the midwest – from Minnesota to Colorado – before she moved with her mother to Oakley, Kansas, where Polly graduated from high school and worked in her mother’s café.
A regular customer of the café, a local mechanic named Leon B. “Jack” Harlan, wooed young Polly, and the pair was married on August 10, 1925. The couple lived in Newton and Topeka before settling in Manhattan in 1941.
Together, the couple raised three children and operated a Mobil filling station in Manhattan. Polly worked in sales at J.C. Penney from 1954 to 1972.
Polly and Jack celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in August 1975, surrounded by dozens of family and friends.
In her retirement years, and beyond, Polly enjoyed playing bridge, fishing, working with local elections and traveling. In her 70s, she went parasailing on a beach at Acapulco and white-water rafting in Colorado. She toured the White House at age 87, leaving with an EKG performed by the President’s doctor.
Polly was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, her beloved Jack, her son Paul and two grandchildren.
Her vivacious spirit will be remembered and celebrated by her daughter, Erma L. Roach of Manhattan; her son, Loyd W. Harlan, and his wife, Judy, of Houston; nine grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great grandchildren.
Polly was a member of the Blue Valley Memorial United Methodist Church. The family asks that memorial contributions be made to the church.
Visitation is scheduled for 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, 1317 Poyntz Ave. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Valley View Memorial Gardens.

He was born March 22, 1940 at Eden, NC, the son of Robert Shivley and Vera Cockran Shivley.
He was united in marriage to Dixie F. Cratch on August 17, 1961 at Hampton, VA. She survives.
Other survivors include three sons, Jerry Shivley, and his wife, Marlene, Manhattan, Charles “Tony” Shivley, and his wife, Tracy, Kansas City, MO and Kenneth Shivley, Manhattan; a daughter, Dixie Shepard, and her husband, Bernie, Alma, KS; a sister, Barbara Joan Brinkley, and her husband, Donald, Virginia Beach, VA; a step brother, Miles Edwards, and his wife, Diane, Hampton, VA; and ten grandchildren.
Mr. Shivley retired from the U.S. Army in November of 1979 after 20 years of military service. In November 1979, he began working for Kansas State University and became the supervisor of the electrical shop in 1984. He retired in September 2000. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, November 2, 2006 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan. Burial will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

Obituary: Bernice L. Klaus, 89, Manhattan, KS passed away Sunday, October 29, 2006 in the Stoneybrook Retirement Community, Manhattan.
She was born August 25, 1917 at Manhattan, the daughter of Jesse R. Pickett and Libbie Estella Mann Pickett. She grew up in Manhattan and attended the local schools.
She was united in marriage to Lloyd E. Paris on June 11, 1934 at Alma, KS. He preceded her in death on November 4, 1981. She was later married to Benedict Klaus on May 21, 1983 at Westmoreland, KS. He survives of Manhattan.
Mrs. Klaus had been a lifelong area resident. During World War II, she worked for the United States Rubber Company. After the war, she worked for the Manhattan Bakery Company, the Perry Packing Company and Kistner’s Flowers. For five years, she was a cook’s helper at the St. George School.
She was a member of the Black Jack American Legion Post Auxiliary and the Quilters & Crochet Club, both of St. George.
In addition to her first husband, Mrs. Klaus was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Cecil, Edgar, Raymond, and Lloyd Pickett; and a half brother, Otis Reightmire.
Survivors include her husband, Benedict (Ben) of Manhattan; a niece, Donna Woodward, Wakefield, KS; a great nephew, Rick Dulaney, Manhattan; two step sons, Richard Lynn Klaus, Ottawa, KS and Rob A. Klaus, Peculiar, MO; and a step granddaughter, Robyn Klaus, Peculiar.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, November 2, 2006 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with the Rev. Ben Duerfeldt officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Cemetery, Manhattan.

Obituary: William A. Greene, 58, Manhattan, KS passed away Friday, October 20, 2006 in the St. Luke’s Hospital, Kansas City, KS.
He was born December 27, 1947 at Ottawa, KS, the son of LeRoy W. Greene and Mildred V. Bene Greene. He grew up in Ottawa where he attended the local schools and was a standout in the track and football programs.
He was united in marriage to Kathleen V. Shaw on August 3, 1968 in Queens, NY. She survives of the home.
Mr. Greene received his BS degree in Physical Education in 1969 from the University of Kansas, Lawrence and his MS degree in Educational Administration in 1978 from Kansas State University, Manhattan.
Mr. Greene spent over 35 years in the educational field. He began his career in Lawrence, KS as graduate assistant with the K.U. Football program in 1969 and from 1970-1972 was a social studies instructor and assistant football coach at the Lawrence Central Junior High School.
In 1972, Mr. Greene moved to Manhattan High School to be in the classroom as an American History instructor (1972-1982); Physical Education instructor (1982-1996); Administrative Assistant/Assistant Athletic Director (1996-2000); Athletic Director (2000-2004); and an Associate Principal at the Riley County High School, Riley, KS (2005-present).
Away from the classroom, Mr. Green was an assistant track coach (1972-1974, 1981); assistant wrestling coach (1972-1974); assistant football coach 1972-1997); and head baseball coach (1988-1994). His 1992-1993 baseball team was the 6A State Champion.
His other activities included being the head baseball coach for the American Legion, Post #17 (1986-1991); Intramural director at Manhattan High School (1980-1988); and from 2004-2005 was a Group Supervisor for Job Readiness Training, Inc.
He was a member of the Fellowship Temple Church of God in Christ, Manhattan.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant brother.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Greene in survived by two sons, Kelly L. Greene and Jeffrey J. Greene, both of Manhattan; a sister, Sharon Aldridge, Lawrence, KS; and a host of nephews, nieces and cousins.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 27, 2006 in the College Avenue United Methodist Church, 1609 College Ave., Manhattan with the Rev. Dr. James B. Boyer officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.
