CLAFLIN - Stewart N. Abbott, 82, died Feb. 21 at his residence in Claflin. He was born Nov. 12, 1923, at Gretna, the son of Henry Burt and Bessie E. (Stewart) Abbott. He married
Dixie D. Lane on March 27, 1947, at Phillipsburg. She survives. He was retired after 35 years as a lease operator for ARCO. He had been a resident of Claflin since 1966 coming from Plainville and Phillipsburg. He was a member of United Methodist Church, Claflin, Isis Shrine Temple, Salina; Shrine Club, Russell; past president of Lions Club, past master Masonic Lodge #290, Plainville and Knights Templer of Hays. Survivors include his wife, Dixie Abbott of the home; two daughters, Diane and husband Leonard Kreft of Great Bend, and Kathy E. Abbott of Salina; two grandchildren, Terry Kreft and wife Amy of Claflin, and Dana Dallen and husband Richard of Wuerzburg, Germany' and five great-grandchildren, Brittny, Taylor and Krista Dallen; and Trustin and Alyssa Kreft. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Leslie Abbott and Estel Abbott; and four sisters, Dorothy Beach, Florence Wilson, Burtine Vanover and Mildred Britt. HUTCHINSON - Amanda M. Morgenstern, 85, died Feb. 23 at her home in Hutchinson. She was born July 20, 1920, in Russell County, the daughter of Samuel and Lena Morgenstern. She was a graduate of Salt City Business College in 1943. A resident of Hutchinson since 1943, she was a secretary for Bunge Grain Corporation, retiring in 1985. Morgenstern was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. Survivors include two brothers, Martin and Luther Morgenstern, both of Great Bend; and special friends, the Al and Terri Wasinger family. She was preceded in death by one brother, Ralph. Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Elliott Chapel with the Rev. Thomas Mendenhall officiating. GREAT BEND - Michael A. Snell, age 44, died Feb. 24, at Harry Haynes Memorial Hospice, Wichita, Kan. He was born April 8, 1961, at Dothan, Ala., the son of Jesse James Snell and Bertha Lee Culver. He married
Mary E. Newman on July 1, 1995 at Great Bend. She survives of he home. He was a resident of Great Bend, since 1987, coming from Fort Collins Colo. He was a cook at the Rack Billiard Cafe in Great Bend. Mr. Snell was an Army veteran during peace time from 1980 to 1983. He was of the Muslim faith. Survivors include a step-son Tyson Newman, Great Bend; daughter Michelle Annette; seven brothers, Kevin Snell, Charles Snell, Willie Snell, all of Naples Fla.; Eddie Snell of Dothan, Ala, RD Snell, and Bobby Snell of Rochester, N.Y., and Floyd Snell, of Indianapolis, Ind. He was preceded in death by his parents, a step-son James Ray Newman, and a brother Joseph Snell. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington, with the Rev. Loyce Clay presiding. Burial will be at Ashford Ala. ST. JOHN - Opal Juanita Weil, 85, died Feb. 23 at Leisure Homestead in Stafford. She wa born Oct. 20, 1920, at rural St. John, the daughter of A.L. and Leona B. (Davidson) Campbell. She was a graduate of St. John High School in 1938. She married
Harry L. 'Roy' Weil on June 15, 1941, at Wichita. A lifetime resident of St. John, she was a legal secretary for Garvin-Garvin-Paulsen attorneys for over 50 years. Survivors include her husband, Harry Weil of the home; three sons, Jerry Weil and Jeff Weil, both of Great Bend, and John Weil of Flower Mound, Texas; one brother, Eugene Campbell of St. John; one sister, Dena Mansel of St. John; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence and Edward Campbell. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Minnis Chapel in St. John with George Shelton officiating. Reverend Carolyn (Mather) Winters

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Reverend Carolyn (Mather) Winters, 95, Maranatha Village, Springfield, Mo., formerly of Burdett, died at 6:10 p.m., Feb. 23 at Maranatha Lodge. She was born Sept. 20, 1910, in Burdett to Guy Francis and Della Jane (Notstine) Mather, both of whom were from pioneer families that came to Browns Grove (now Burdett) early in its history. She graduated from Burdett High School in 1929. She then graduated from Kansas State University in 1933 and was employed as a teacher in the Garden City school system. She later would vividly describe the extreme dust storms that she experienced while she was in Garden City. In 1936, she married
Floyd Gerald Winters who preceded her in death, Dec. 21, 1979. They moved to his farm south of Altmont in the Fairview community. There she was active in family, community, and church activities. they had one son, Murl Winters, Springfield, Mo. Her testimony was that she was diagnosed with leukemia around 1950. After being prayed for she rejoiced in renewed health which continued over the years. Later, she and her husband attended Southwestern Assemblies of God University, Waxahachie, Texas, graduating in 1960. Together they pastored churches in Arkansas, Missouri, and Kansas. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Bruce Mather, and his wife, Ora. Survivors include Murl Winters and wife Marlene; three grandchildren and their spouses, Kimberly and Craig McJunkin, Rachel and Gary McJunkin, and Stephen and Debbie Winters; six great-grandchildren, Caleb, Joshua, Elizabeth, David, Grace and Benjamin McJunkin and Hannah Winters; and a host of family and friends. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, Burdett, with Pastor Mitch Reece presiding. Visitation will be from noon until 8 p.m. Sunday at Morell Funeral Home, Larned. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Browns Grove cemetery, Burdett. She enjoyed helping provide the Holy Bible to others in their native languages. Howard D Asher on Feb. 8, 1948 in St. John. She was a lifetime resident of St. John, a former school teacher and cook for St. John Schools. Mrs. Asher was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and charter member of Progressive Mother's Club, both of St. John. Survivors include one son, David Asher, Wichita; a daughter, Lynn McConaughy, Hutchinson; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, four brothers, Earl, Ellis, Boyd, and Harvey Fisher. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Minnis Chapel, St. John with Rev. Robbie Fall presiding. Harry O. Thorne II on Sept. 30, 1941, at Medicine Lodge. A resident of Larned since 1955, she was a Registered Nurse working for Kingman Hospital, Larned State Hospital and Pawnee County SRS until she retired in 1983. Thorne was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Larned. Survivors include her husband; one son, Harry O. III of Larned; one daughter, Nancy Baze of Mission; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters. Survivors include two sons, Mark W. Hauser, Overland Park, and Bryon K. Hauser, Franklin, Ohio; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Keith Hauser, in 1973, and a son, Niles Hauser, in 2001. B. Claire Sargant on Jan. 21, 1950, at Guthrie, Okla. A resident of Hoisington since 1970, coming from north of Ellinwood, he was the owner of Hadley Roofing Company. Hadley was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Hoisington, Hoisington Chamber of Commerce, and former member of the Hoisington City Council and the Zoning and Planning Commission. He was a veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, of the home; two daughters, Susan Wendel, Great Bend, and Tammy Alexander, Mullinville; one son, Curtis Hadley, Houston, Texas; a sister, Joan Hergert, Hennessey, Okla.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. LeRoy Lew Lawrence on Jan. 6, 1962, at Claflin. He died April 7, 1992. A lifetime resident of Barton and Ellsworth counties, she was a caregiver and former owner/operator of L&L Cafe in Holyrood. Mrs. Lawrence was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Holyrood. Survivors include a son, Richard Lawrence of Bennington; a daughter, Diane Lawrence of Holyrood; a brother, Richard Letourneau of Claflin; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna; a son, David; and sisters Margaret Cameron and Joan Mullis. BISON - Carl H. Thielenhaus, 82, died Feb. 19 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born Jan. 22, 1924, in rural Bison, the son of John W. and Frieda (Hildebrand) Thielenhaus. Mr. Thielenhaus was a lifelong resident of Bison and Rush County. He graduated from Bison High School with the class of 1941. Mr. Thielenhaus was a farmer and stockman. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Bison; Sunday School Superintendent; Sunday School Teacher; Church Deacon; Board Member/Rush County Farm Bureau; President/Rush County Farm Bureau Board; Member/High Plains Barber Shop Chorus; and Rush County Commissioner from 1980-1992. He married
Ruth Etta Scheuerman on Oct. 21, 1944, in rural Bison. Survivors include one son, Carl H. Thielenhaus Jr. and his wife Terry K. Thielenhaus of Bison; one daughter, Peggy A. Young and her husband Guy H. Young of Bison; two sisters, Martha Fritch of Chanute and Clara Schultz of Plainville; seven grandchildren, Richard L. Thielenhaus, Lukes J. Thielenhaus, April K. Barnett, Erik W. Thielenhaus, Alan W. Foust, Brian H. Foust, and Chad L. Foust.; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, John W. and Frieda (Hildebrand) Thielenhaus; his wife, Ruth Etta (Scheuerman) Thielenhaus (May 22, 2005); and three brothers, William Thielenhaus, Fred Thielenhaus, and Elmer Thielenhaus.
