RUSSELL - Esther K. Batt, 93, died Feb. 12 at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell. She was born July 4, 1912, in Russell, the daughter of Conrad and Anna (Krug) Elsasser. She attended the rural Milberger Elementary School. She married
Herman Batt on Nov. 6, 1938, in rural Russell County. She lived most of her life on the family farm south of Russell and was a homemaker. Mrs. Batt was a member of the Trinity Bender Hill Lutheran Church until its closing and then became a member of United Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Milberger. Survivors include one son, Garry of Russell; one daughter, Shirley DeWald of Russell; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; an infant daughter, Arletta; two brothers, Leo and Alvin Elsasser; and one infant brother. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at Pohlman-Heise Memorial Chapel in Russell with the Rev. Peter Rupprecht officiating. Burial will be at the Russell City cemetery. Elizabeth "Betty" Marie Tonne

BELOIT - Elizabeth 'Betty' Marie (Boehner) Tonne, 96, died Saturday, February 11, 2006, at Mitchell County Hospital, Beloit. She was born Dec. 6, 1909, on a farm south of Cawker City, Kansas, the fifth child of David and Dorothea Krauter Boehner. She was baptized and confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Church, Tipton, and later joined the Zion Lutheran Church, Beloit. She grew up in the Mitchell County area, and graduated from Cawker City High School in the Class of 1927. After her husband's death a lot of her time was spent helping with field work and cattle. After moving to Beloit, she spent many hours babysitting in addition to raising her daughters, as well as cleaning at the nursing home, and working in the kitchen at the Mitchell County Hospital. She spent more than 30 years volunteering at the Economy Shop, with hospice, working as a Pink Lady at the hospital, as well as delivering Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed quilting at the Lutheran Church for many years, and spent countless hours making lap quits for the nursing homes and tied quilts for Lutheran World Relief. Her daughters and families were her pride and joy, and they all received quilts that she pieced and quilted. In her later years, she embroidered, crocheted pillowcases for her family and friends. She also enjoyed her flowers from the first blooms of the season until the frost arrived. On Feb. 24, 1932, she married
Louie Tonne in Tipton. He died March 15, 1950. The couple was privileged to spend 18 years of marriage together on a farm near Glen Elder until Louis' death, when she moved back to Beloit. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Fred and John Boehner; two sisters, Sophia Gertje, Elsie Gertje, and a grandson, Loren Albert. Survivors include: two daughters, Marlene Albert and her husband John, Larned, Linda Bowers and her husband, Charley, Beloit; 6 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. LARNED - Norma Lee Reed Crawford, 80, passed away Feb. 11 at Country Place Senior Living in Larned. She was born April 25, 1925, in Larned, the daughter of Harvey Leon and Hazel Mae Couchman Reed. A lifetime Larned resident, she was a mother and a homemaker. She graduated from Larned High School and attended Colorado Womens College in Colorado Springs, Colo., Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., and Kansas University before becoming a stewardess with American Airlines. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Daughters of the American Revolution, Larned Country Club and the Garden Club, all of Larned. On Nov. 15, 1946, she married
Walter M. Crawford in Larned. He passed away April 22, 2005. Survivors include two sons, Walter Leon Crawford and wife Judy of Prescott, Ariz., and Robert Reed Crawford of Larned; a daughter, Diane Crawford Ward and husband Brian of Longmont, Colo.; a sister, JoAnn Cole of Hutchinson; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. LaVern G. Bowyer, 72, of Great Bend, died Feb. 12 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born Feb. 28, 1933, at Pawnee Rock, the son of William Thomas and Louise Bertha Schroeder Bowyer. He married
Jane Homburg on June 5, 1955, in rural Ellis. He was a retired farmer and dairyman and former owner of the Jayhawker Motel. He was a resident of Great Bend since 1987, coming from Pawnee Rock. Bowyer was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Albert. He served as church council president, Sunday school superintendent and was a Luther League sponsor. He was a former member of Great Bend Convention Bureau, Chamber of Commerce, all of Great Bend and former board member of Farmer Grain, Pawnee Rock. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Vernie Bowyer and Ernie Bowyer, both of Great Bend; one brother, Eugene Bowyer of Chico, Texas; and one grandson. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Peace Lutheran Church in rural Albert with the Rev. Robert Kreier officiating. Burial will be at Peace Lutheran cemetery in Albert. PAWNEE ROCK - George H. Crone, 46, died Feb 9, at his home. He was born the son of Roy and Hazel Alberta (Payne) Crone on June 20 1960 in Great Bend. He was a resident of Pawnee Rock, Kan., a pilot, truck driver, and heavy equipment operator. Crone was a member of the Aircraft Owners Pilots Association, AOPA, and the Arbor Day Foundation. Survivors include companion Bonnie Furrey, Pawnee Rock; two sons, Jamie Crone and Casey Crone, both of Dundee, Kan.; daughter Kayla Crone, Moses Lake Wash.; two brothers Cliford Crone, Irvin Crone, of Great Bend; four sisters, Virginia Jacobs, Hazel Johnson, Tammy Hammond, all of Pawnee Rock, Darlene Kaupke, Stillwater, Okla; and his parents, Roy and Hazel Alberta Crone; and two grandchildren. HAYS - Shirley S Dickerson, 77, died Feb. 9 at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kan. She was born Oct. 13, 1928 in Lyons, Kan. the daughter of Cecil and Marguerite (Webb) Hass. She married
Robert P. Dickerson on March 23, 1947 in Lyons. He preceded her in death in 1970. She moved to Hays in 1987 and was a registered nurse in the Emergency Department of St. Anthony Hospital. Mrs. Dickerson was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hays, and the VFW Auxiliary in Geneseo, Kan. Survivors include one son, Aaron Dickerson of Eudora, Kan.; three daughters, Deborah Boling, Hays, Jocelyn Dickerson, Colorado Springs, and Mary Jo Stack, Palm Beach Garden, Fla.; one brother, Kenneth Hass, Lyons and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Monday at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Hays. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Lyons Municipal cemetery, Lyons. LARNED - Dorrace A. Dirks, 80, died Feb. 11 at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital, Larned, Kan. She was born May 17, 1925 in Larned, the daughter of Adolph Lawrence and Susie Ruth Koehn Jantz. She married
Dean D. Dirks on June 9, 1946. He preceded her in death on June 1, 2002. She was a longtime resident of Pawnee County, a farm wife and worked at the Air Base in Great Bend during WWII. Mrs. Dirks was a member of the United Methodist Church, the WSCS, a 4-H Leader, and Pawnee County Election Board Member, all in Larned. Survivors include two daughters, Carol Vrooman and husband Dennis, Tulsa Okla., Judy Dirks-Cole and husband Jess, Mission, Kan.; one brother, Bruce Jantz, Larned; a sister, Dorothy Schurmann, Spencer, Iowa; two grandchildren, Alison and Carson Vrooman, Tulsa; two step-grandchildren, Jason Cole, Kansas City, Mo., Melissa Hogue, Gardner, Kan.; and two step-great grandchildren, Caroline and Olivia Hogue, Gardner. Floyd A. Treece
1914 - 2006
Floyd A. Treece was born April 27, 1914, near Leslie, Ark., in Searcy County, to Noah Christopher and Aulsie Griffin Treece. After his father died he moved to St. John where his sister, Hazel lived so he could learn to become an auto mechanic under the tutelage of his brother-in-law, Jim Staton. He worked for the Gillmore Osborne Motor Co. until he moved to Great Bend. On Nov. 14, 1940 he married
Edith June Smith Treece at the First Christian Church parsonage in St. John. They moved to Great Bend in January of 1941, for Floyd to take a job with Davis-Child Chevrolet, Olds, Cadillac which later was know as Davis Child or Moore or Taylor Motor before becoming Bob Reiter Chevrolet. He retired from Reiters in 1981 and worked temporarily at Dee Dove's. He worked at Gen. Motors dealerships for over 43 years. On Sept. 19, 1942, he enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corps where he served as a crew chief in airplane maintenance until his honorable discharge as a sergeant on Dec. 5, 1945. He was a member of the local First Christian Church and has been loyal in attendance and support. He was a Sunday School helper, Chairman of the Deacons for many years and was a Deacon Emeritus. He was also a life member of the American Legion and helped in RSVP. He was an enthusiastic supporter of the Great Bend Panthers especially the football and basketball program. He was given the first James Edwards Award in 1987 for Outstanding Service to the Great Bend High School Athletic Program. He sold memberships for Panther Parents and took tickets at football games. He is survived by his wife of over 65 years, Edith; a son, Randall of Wichita; a sister, Maxine and her husband, Wayne Davis of San Diego, Calif.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Linda; two sisters, Hazel Staton and Gladys Torrance; and two brothers, Lloyd and Cedric Treece. Funeral services were conducted Feb. 8 at First Christian Church in Great Bend. Burial with military honors was at Fairview Park cemetery in St. John by Minnis Chapel.
Delwin Ernest Lumpkins

LIBERTY, Texas - Delwin Ernest Lumpkins, of Liberty, Texas, formerly of Holyrood passed away on Feb. 8 after a brave battle with cancer. Delwin was a retired Superintendent for the Samson Companies. He was born Jan. 15, 1934, to Irwin Roy and Della May Lumpkins, who both preceded him in death. He was united in marriage on May 3, 1951, with Ramona E. Gates, and they had six children who all survive him: Leanna Davis and husband, Ed, of Nacogdoches, Texas; Delwin Eugene Lumpkins and wife, Jill, of Hutchinson; Ronald Lumpkins of Russell; Dwight Lumpkins and wife, Nancy, of Liberty, Texas; Loren Lumpkins of Liberty, Texas, and Lonnie Lumpkins and wife, Mandy, of Kilgore, Texas. He is also survived by two brothers, Earl Lumpkins and wife, Juanita, of Palco; Keith Lumpkins and wife, Grace, of Chase; and also two sisters, Virginia King and husband, Daryl, of Parker, Colo.; and Lorna Kay Lumpkins of Hays. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Royalyn Nelson, a grandson, Michael Shane Lumpkins, and a granddaughter, Lauren Rose Lumpkins. He is survived by 19 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. A funeral service will be held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Liberty, Texas, on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 10:30 a.m. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 11 a.m., at St. Paul's United Church of Christ cemetery in Holyrood. INMAN - Iris Verle Price, 84, died Feb. 8 at Pleasant View Home in Inman. She was born July 21, 1921, at Chester, Okla., the daughter of Floyd H. and Blanche E. VanSickle Kelley. She graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1939. She married
Kelly P. Price on April 28, 1947 at Wichita. He died in April 1989. She was a longtime Great Bend resident. She operated her own beauty salon in Great Bend. Mrs. Price was a member of the Methodist Church and had attended Trinity and Faith United Methodist Churches in Hutchinson. Survivors include one sister, Ila Briggs of Windom; three nephews, Mike Price, Randy Price and John Price, all of Texas; four nieces Bonna Shell and husband Jerry, and Beverly Janssen and husband Royce, both of Inman, Janet Stroberg and husband Tom of Hutchinson, and Teressa Cochrane of Texas; and several great nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents and spouse. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Elliott Mortuary Chapel in Hutchinson with Pastor Dan Dalke presiding. HUTCHINSON - Ben S. McCaskey, 88, died Feb. 8 at Hutchinson Hospital in Hutchinson. He was born April 9, 1917, in Columbus, Mont., the son of Walter Earl and Harriet Hicks McCaskey. He married
Loreen Schutte on April 9, 1939 in McCracken. Formerly from Great Bend, he had been a Hutchinson resident for a year. He was a self-employed salesman in Great Bend. McCaskey was a member of the Great Bend American Legion and the United Methodist Church in Great Bend. Survivors include his wife, Loreen; one son, Benny McCaskey of Great Bend; two daughters, Geraldine "Geary" Brown of Spivey, and Sharon Eisler of Hutchinson; one sister, Virginia Barnes of Colorado Springs, Colo.; seven grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Walter Earl McCaskey, Jr.; and two sisters, Betty Sikes and Maurene Thompson. Cremation has taken place. Private family services will be held at a later date. JOPLIN, Mo. - Marvin Cecil Scheuerman, 79, died Feb. 2 in Joplin, Mo. He was born April 19, 1926, in Rush County, the son of Conrad D. and Rosa (Matal) Scheuerman. He graduated from Alexander High School in 1943, and Fort Hays State University in 1951. Scheuerman was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Army and receiving a purple heart in Okinawa. He belonged to the Methodist Church. Survivors include four brothers, Gilbert Scheuerman, Merle Scheuerman, Donald Scheuerman, Arlyn Scheuerman; and two sisters, Clarinetta Scheuerman, and Mary Ann Prose. He was preceded in death by the following brothers and sisters: Chester, Esther, Martin, Louise, Louella, Wilbert, Wilmer, Conrad, Harry, Lloyd, Benjamin, Glenn, Lindy, Freda Clark, Elvina Brazda and Velma Morgan.
