HUTCHINSON - Clifford V. 'Bud' Steierl, 84, died March 19 at Good Samaritan in Hutchinson. He was born Oct. 22, 1921, at rural Sterling, the son of John C. and Vesta G. Hawver Steierl. He was a 1940 graduate of Nickerson High School. He married Vera Jane Cruth on July 26, 1943, at Raymond. She died Feb. 20, 2005. A longtime resident of Hutchinson, he was a papermaker and farmer. Steierl was a member of First Southern Baptist Church in Hutchinson. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps World War II veteran. Survivors include one son, William Steierl of Buhler; two daughters, Jane Ann Cruse of Great Bend, and Jean Welch of Ellinwood; one brother, John Steierl of Hutchinson; one sister, Donna Smith of Meade; 13 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. Ray E. Kempel officiating. Burial will be at Fairlawn cemetery in Hutchinson with military graveside honors by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Friends may call today from 1 to 9 p.m., with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m., at Elliott Mortuary Chapel in Hutchinson. Albert O. "Bert" Roy
1937 - 2006
TOPEKA - Albert O. 'Bert' Roy, 69, Topeka, passed away Monday, March 20 at St. Francis Health Center. Mr. Roy owned and operated Capital City Taxi and Capital Bingo in Topeka, Jackpot Bingo in Salina, and Funtime Bingo in Great Bend. He was born Jan. 25, 1937, in Webster, the son of Dona and Nathelie Asselin Roy. Albert is a member of Mother Teresa Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus in Phillipsburg. He was married to Roberta Berland on July 19, 1955, at Damar. They divorced. He married Karen E. Moten on Jan. 25, 1992, at Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include: four daughters, Sharon Tynsky of Hays, Sharlene and her husband Michael Messaros of Boulder, Colo., LaDonna and her husband Timothy Sullivan of Aurora, Colo., and Christine and her husband Tim Thompson of O'Fallon, Mo.; one stepdaughter, Johnelle Frisby of Topeka; stepsons: Kevin Moten of Topeka and Shawn Moten of Las Vegas, Nev.; brothers: Eugene Roy of Atwood, Orville Roy of Palco, Clifford Roy of Stockton and Stanley Roy of Damar; sisters: Viola Ricks of Arlington, Texas, Donna Wiltfong of Phillipsburg, Norma Griffin of Salina; grandchildren: Jason, Christopher, Rachael and Sophie Messaros, Kyle Tynsky, Lyndsey Tynsky-Dorman, Jessica Worch, Chelsea O'Keefe, Kylie and Tanner Sullivan, Ian, Alexa, Abigail and Elizabeth Thompson, Shelby, Cameron and Torey Moten and KeShawnda, Karli and Brooke Frisby; and four great grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Shirley Roy and a brother, LaVerne Roy. Mr. Roy will lie in state after 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home in Topeka, where a vigil prayer service with rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Damar. Interment will follow in St. Joseph cemetery at Damar. Mr. Roy will lie in state after 3 p.m. Friday at the Spencer-Stinemetz Chapel in Hill City, where a wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Mother Teresa Catholic Church and sent in care of the funeral home. Mabel Frances Thomas

LARNED - Mabel Frances Thomas, 89, died March 21 at St, Joseph Memorial Hospital in Larned. She was born March 20, 1917, at Gove, the daughter of Frank E. and Flora Jane Thompson Batman. She married Clarence Thomas on June 20, 1936, at Gove. He died April 1986. A resident of Larned since 1964, she was a retired Psychiatric Aid at the Larned State Hospital. Mrs. Thomas was a member of Assembly of God Church in Larned. Survivors include one son, Myron of Larned; two daughters, Myrna Flora Miller and Lanet Rose Farmer, both of Larned; three sisters, Nora Parsons of Collyer, Laree Goertzen of Aurora, Neb., and Mary Engelhart of Mingo; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas and Joe Robert Batman; and four sisters, Amelia Batman, Ann Suprise, Esther Hays, and Tura Alexander; one granddaughter; and two great-grandsons. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Morell Funeral Home in Larned with the Rev. Ryan Webster officiating. Burial will be at the Larned cemetery in Larned. BUSHTON - Bonnie Lee Volkland, 84, died March 9 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born Jan. 16, 1922, at Bushton, the daughter of William F. and Mary (Schwerdtfeger) Volkland. She was a retired employee of the Bushton State Bank and a lifetime resident of Bushton. Volkland was a member of United Methodist Church, Bushton; Salt City Chapter of the American Business Women's Association and member of the Mutual Improvement Club of Bushton. Survivors include one nephew, Steven Chapelle of Phoenix, Ariz.; and one niece, Beth Chapelle of Phoenix, Ariz. She was preceded in death by one sister, Whila M. Chapelle. Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington with the Rev. John Grummon officiating. Louise Faye McCuller
1935 - 2006
WHITE OAK, Texas - Louise Faye McCuller passed away at home with her loved ones March 20. She was born Dec. 28, 1935, in Macksville, as the fourth of six children to Martin and Nellie Suiter. She moved to East Texas in her early 20s and devoted her life to helping disadvantaged children in the medical and educational fields. Louise will be remembered as one who always placed the needs of others before herself. She will be missed by friends, colleagues, patients and students who she touched during more than 25 years of service with Dr. George Hoover, and over 20 years with the White Oak and Sabine school systems. Louise was a longtime resident of White Oak where for years she was a passionate Roughneck fan and fixture at the football home game ticket booth. She also placed high value on civic duty and never missed an opportunity to vote while also volunteering time to monitor local elections for more than 20 years. Louise was preceded in death by her above mentioned parents, a brother, Dick Suiter and sisters, Arlene Shelton and Shirley Sprout. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Mike Browning of White Oak, a daughter and son-in-law, Kim Sewing and Darren Dove, a granddaughter, Ashley Sewing, a sister, Jeannie Aves, and a brother, Lee Suiter, all of Macksville. The family wishes thanks to Dr. Frase and the staff of Longview Cancer Center, Good Shepard Home Health Services and Great Hospice of Texas for the care provided to Louise through the years and in her final days. Funeral services will be at noon today at the First United Methodist Church in Longview with the Rev. Jerry Turner officiating. HOISINGTON - Glen W. Nuss, 81, died March 21 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. He was born Nov. 29, 1924, at Hoisington, the son of Henry and Mollie (Schneider) Nuss. He graduated from Hoisington High School in 1942. A lifetime resident of Hoisington, he was a retired office manager for O'Niell Tank Co. of Great Bend and Hoisington. Nuss was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church, life member and past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7428, and life member of American Legion Post No. 286, all of Hoisington. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Joan of the home; one son, Pat Nuss of Norman, Okla.; one sister, Irene Simmons of Hoisington; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Michael Nuss; three brothers, Bob, Clarence and Elmer Nuss; and one sister, Lucille Chaffee. There will not be any visitation or a memorial service, as cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to Kans for Kids in care of Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. OTIS - Dorothy Frances Hemken, 83, died March 19 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. She was born Oct. 14, 1922, at the family farm near Albert, in Rush County, the daughter of Herman Fredrick Rankin and Margarate Talka (Folkerts) Rankin. She married Ronald Kaiser on Sept. 9, 1945, at Albert. He preceded in death July 23, 1949. She married William 'Pete' Peters on Jan. 13, 1952, at Otis. He died Dec. 14, 1979. She married Melvin 'Mel' Hemken on Oct. 9, 1983, at Otis. He preceded in death Nov. 23, 2000. She was a Grocery Store owner and lifetime resident of Rush County. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Otis; W.E.L.C.A., church organist, past president of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary; Treasurer of Otis Senior Citizens; former member of the Otis Library board; and writer of Otis News for the Rush County News in La Crosse. Survivors include one son, Douglas Kaiser of Austin, Texas; two daughters, Janice Higgason of Horseshoe Bay, Texas; and Linda Kenyon of Otis; seven grandchildren, Laura Wallace, Sarah Kaiser, John Highfill, Katy Hayden, Ann Kenyon, William Kenyon, and Kara Kenyon; and 10 great-grandchildren, Cameron and Christian Wallace; Brianne Highfill, Taylor Van Highfill and Roland Highfill; Meron Hayden and Gage Hayden; Maxwell Percy; and Ava Kenyon and Lela Kenyon. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Anna Tammen, Marie Bartel and infant Elfrieda Rankin. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Otis with Pastor Bruce Adamson officiating. Burial will be at the Lutheran cemetery in Otis. Visitation will be Wednesday from 1 to 9 p.m. at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington and Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church in care of the funeral home. NESS CITY - Irene Marie Herman, 79, died March 18 at the Via Christi Medical Center in Wichita. She was born May 25, 1926, near Ness City, the daughter of Carl and Anna Doerfler Stecklein. She married Edwin Herman on Dec. 30, 1946, at Ness City. He died Aug. 26, 2000. She was a homemaker and lifetime resident of Ness City. Mrs. Herman was a member of the Sacred Heart Church and the Altar Society of Ness City and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary of Ransom. Survivors include two sons, Jerry Herman of Hays, and Larry Herman of Stafford; one daughter, Connie Ashlock of Wichita; two brothers, Eddie Stecklein and Fritz Stecklein, both of Ness City; one sister, Lorene Pfannenstiel of Ness City; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Henry, George and Isidore Stecklein; and three sisters, Josephine Gabel, Trillie Dinges and Bonita Stecklein. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. today at the Sacred Heart Church in Ness City with the Rev. Henry Hildebrandt and Rev. Warren Stecklein officiating. HOISINGTON - Lila Lee Spears, 100, died March 19 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born Sept. 9, 1905, at Osawatomie, the daughter of William Andrew and Lula (Baker) Bevis. She attended Ottawa University. She married Richard O. 'Dick' Spears on May 11, 1935, at Clearwater. He died Aug. 23, 1981. She worked as a clerk for the Missouri-Pacific railroad for over 30 years and was a longtime resident of Hoisington. Mrs. Spears was a member of the First Christian Church in Hoisington and 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star Una Chapter No. 119. Survivors include two cousins, Robert Baker and Shirley Baker, both of St. Louis, Mo. She was preceded in death by two brothers. Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at NicholsonRicke Funeral Home in Hoisington with the Rev. Paula Bell officiating. Burial will be at the Hoisington cemetery in Hoisington. Visitation will be Thursday from 9 a.m. to service time at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church in care of the funeral home. ODIN - Margaret L. Boor, 86, died March 18 at Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita. She was born Sept. 17, 1919, at Barton County, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Schon) Axman. She married Mathias 'Matt' Boor on Sept. 9, 1941, at Olmitz. He survives. She was a homemaker and bookkeeper for the farm and a lifetime resident of Barton County. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Altar Society and member of the Holy Family cemetery Board, all of Odin; and former DCCW member and officer. She was very prayerful and devoted to her faith and was an avid bread maker. Survivors include her husband, Matt of the home; one son, Larry and his wife Doreen Boor of Great Bend; three daughters, Loretta and her husband Robert 'Jose' Finger of Hoisington, Judy and her husband Kirby Conley of Wichita, and Donna and her husband Gary Bates of Hoisington; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Jim and Gerry Boor; one brother, Frank Axman; an infant sister; and one sister, Major Mary Axman. Vigil service will be 7 p.m. today followed by an Altar Society rosary, all at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Odin with Father Pascal Klein officiating. Burial will be at the Holy Family cemetery in Odin. W. Richard Shull, 55, died March 18 at Central Kansas Medical Center - ER in Great Bend. He was born Feb. 19, 1951, at Great Bend, the son of William A. and Elizabeth J. Sturm Shull. He married Linda J. Duneback on May 23, 1971, at Great Bend. She survives. He was a property appraiser for the State of Kansas - Department of Revenue and owner of BHNC Video Productions. He was a former lieutenant with the Great Bend Police Department and former Country/Western Dance instructor. He was a lifetime resident of Great Bend. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and Kansas Professional Video Association. Survivors include his wife, Linda Shull of the home; his mother, Betty J. Shull of Great Bend; one son, Brian R. Shull of Buhler; two daughters, Christy L. Creacy of Garden City, and Tracy L. Miller of Great bend; one brother, Kevin R. Shull of Buhler; and four grandchildren, Nicole A. Creacy, Evan T. Creacy, Elsi M. Miller, and Jonathan B. Shull. He was preceded in death by his father, W. A. Shull. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend with the Rev. James A. Strasen officiating. Interment will be at the Great Bend cemetery North in Great Bend. Visitation will be today from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the family to receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. GALATIA - Angeline P. Gustin, 97, died March 19 at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. She was born Oct. 31, 1908, at Hoisington, the daughter of John and Mollie (Haberman) Budig. She married Clarence W. Gustin on Sept. 20, 1927, at Great Bend. He died Feb. 4, 1984. She was a homemaker and a resident of Great Bend since 1980, moving from the family farm near Galatia. Mrs. Gustin was a member of First United Methodist Church in Hoisington. Survivors include two sons, Charles Gustin of Olmitz, and Larry Gustin of Rose Hill; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Frank Budig; and five sisters, Florence Degner, Hilda Gerritzen, Gertrude Holder, Bess Riedl and Caroline Dressler. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington with the Rev. Wayne Flanders officiating. Burial will be at the Fairview cemetery in Galatia. Visitation will be today from 11 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to service time at the funeral home. Family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Harvey Eugene Converse, 92, died March 19 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born on Feb. 18, 1914, at Pawnee Rock, the son of Charles Wesley and Effa May Rice Converse. He married Marcile Elaine Ray on Nov. 7, 1936, at Great Bend. She died Dec. 18, 2001. He was a farmer and a lifetime Great Bend area resident. Converse was a member of First United Methodist Church, past board member of Kansas Food Association, Kansas Pest Control Association, city council member 1968- 1969, Chamber of Commerce and Lions Club. He was an aircraft maintenance inspector at the Great Bend Air Base during World War II. Harvey and Marcile received the Recognizing Outstanding Service to Education Award on Oct. 15, 1992. Survivors include two daughters, Jean Armstrong of Humboldt, and Patricia Sue Kuster of Rochester, N.Y.; one brother, Howard A. Converse of Great Bend; and two grandchildren. Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend with the Rev. Gary Brooks officiating. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Inurnment will be at Great Bend Municipal cemetery. Memorials are suggested to First United Methodist Church or Altera Sterling House in care of the funeral home.
