1933 -2006 HOISINGTON - Louise Bohn, 72, died March 13 in Ellinwood. She was born Dec. 15, 1933, at Geneseo, the daughter of Luis and Frances (Gomez) Vasquez. She married Fred J. Bohn Jr. on Aug. 6, 1955, at Beaver. He died Oct. 17, 1996. She was a retired Nurse's Aid at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend and a long-time resident of Hoisington. Mrs. Bohn was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hoisington. Survivors include two sons, Fred Daniel Bohn of Ellinwood and John Raymond Bohn of Pawnee Rock; three daughters, Karolyn Kay Stevenson and Marilyn Faye Little, both of Hoisington, and Frances Arlene Rome of Ellinwood; five brothers; two sisters; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Vigil service will be today at 7 p.m. at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Pascal Klein officiating. Burial will be at the St. John Church cemetery in Hoisington. Visitation will be today from 1 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Oliva Befort
1916 - 2006
HAYS - Oliva Befort, 89, died March 12 at St. John's of Hays Nursing Home. She was born July 19, 1916, in Schoenchen, the daughter of Joseph and Margaret (Kuhn) Schreiner. She married Jerome A. 'Jerry' Befort on May 15, 1939, in Schoenchen. He died on May 17, 1996. She was a homemaker and worked as a baker in the Student Union at Fort Hays State University prior to her retirement. Mrs. Befort was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Hays. Survivors include four sons, Charles Befort of Larned, Dennis Befort of Bartlesville, Okla., the Rev. Earl Befort of Hays, and David Befort of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Janice Deal of Garden City and Sharon Ruder of Hays; four brothers, Bill Schreiner of Albany, Ore., Dan Schreiner of Hays, Joe Schreiner of Las Vegas, Nev., and Herb Schreiner of Albuquerque, N.M.; three sisters, Irene Burgardt of Offerle, Helen Schwarzenberger of Olathe and Adeline Saia of Topeka; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Albert, Gerry and Eddie Schreiner; and one sister, Josephine Kramer. Parish vigil service will be at 7 p.m. today at Brock's North Hill Chapel in Hays. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Paul Coakley, the Rev. Earl Befort, the Rev. Mike Scully, fellow Capuchin Priests and other clergy officiating. BEAVER, Okla. - Barbara Kay Friedel, 64, was born Feb. 27, 1942, at Hoisington, the daughter of G. C. and Katherine Ellen (Jacoby) Clift. She was a graduate of Hoisington High School. She married Larry Friedel on Aug. 20, 1960. She was a resident of Beaver, Okla., coming from Hoisington and Scott City. Mrs. Friedel was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Beaver. Survivors include her husband, of the home; one son, Kenny Friedel of Beaver, Okla.; one daughter, Melanie Rhodes of Elk City, Okla.; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother and one sister. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Matthews Catholic Church in Elk City, Okla., with the Rev. Timothy Fuller officiating. Maudie Marie Seeman

LARNED - Maudie Marie Seeman, 85, died March 8 at Larned Healthcare Center. She was born Sept. 17, 1920, at Larned, the daughter of Andrew D. and Mary Edison Hill. She married Andy Seeman Jr. on April 30, 1939, at Wichita. He died Jan. 2, 2003. A lifetime resident of Pawnee County, living in Ash Valley Township for 49 years, she moved to Larned in 1987. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Seeman was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and Presbyterian Women's Association, both of Larned. Survivors include three sons, Patrick Seeman and Steven Seeman, both of Larned, and Mark Seeman of Salina; two daughters, Jo Ann Crosby of Diamond Head, Miss., and Susan Smith of Larned; nine grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, John and daughter-in-law, Katie Lewis Seeman; one brother, John William Hill; and three sisters, Bettie Lee Hill, Amber Tribble and Faye McDonald. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Dennis Scheibmeier officiating. Burial will be at the Larned cemetery. TIMKEN - Lorraine Helen Serpan, 78, died March 9 at Hays Medical Center in Hays. She was born July 14, 1927, on a farm near Otis, in Barton County, the daughter of William Max Krmela and Helen Magdalene (Kittel) Krmela. Mrs. Serpan was a lifelong resident of Rush County. The Serpans lived in the Otis/Olmitz area until 1951, when they moved to Timken. Mrs. Serpan received her education at District No. 42 in Barton County. Mrs. Serpan was a homemaker, and for may years, she was a cook for the Timken Grade School in Timken. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Timken; St. Ann's Altar Society, Timken; American Legion Auxiliary Unit #96, Bison; VFW Auxiliary, La Crosse. She married Emil Edward Serpan on Jan. 29, 1946, at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Olmitz. Survivors include her husband, Emil Serpan of Timken; one daughter, Carol Bieber and her husband Richard Bieber of Great Bend; one brother-in-law; Robert Kraisinger of Kinsley; two sisters, Magdalene 'Peggy' Olson of Russell, and Jane Behr and her husband Max Behr of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two grandchildren, Brent Bieber of Lakewood, Colo., and Candice Hirsh and her husband Darrin of Great Bend; and three great-grandsons, Easton Hirsh, Garrett Hirsh, and Gavin Hirsh, all of Great Bend. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Max and Helen Magdalene (Kittel) Krmela; one sister, Angie Kraisinger; one brother, Raymond Krmela; one brother-in-law, Verlan Olson; and one sister-in-law, Kathleen Krmela. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Timken with Father Ultan Murphy officiating. Interment will be at Holy Cross cemetery in Timken. Arnold C. "Arnie" Carpenter, Sr.

Arnold C. 'Arnie' Carpenter, Sr., 88, died March 10 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation in Great Bend. He was born July 3, 1917, at South Berwick, Maine, the son of Charles C. and Gladys Evelyn Ferris Carpenter. He married Alvena Carr on April 23, 1947, at South Berwick, Maine. She died May 7, 2004. He was the owner of Arnie's Corner and Arnie's Malt Shop in Otis and had also worked for the Otis Helium Plant. He had been a lifelong resident of Otis, living in Great Bend the last six years. Carpenter was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Otis; American Legion #286 and VFW #7428, both of Hoisington. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a survivor of Pearl Harbor and a witness to the Tokyo Bay Peace Treaty signing. Survivors include two sons, Chuck Carpenter of Great Bend, and Curt Carpenter of Olathe; one daughter, Carol Schmidt of Salina; one sister, Emma Goodwin of South Berwick, Maine; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Alvin C., Freeman L., and Melvin E. Carpenter. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Otis United Methodist Church in Otis with the Rev. Marilyn Christmore officiating. Burial will be at the Otis Methodist cemetery in Otis with full military honors conducted by American Legion #286 and VFW #7428. BUSHTON - Bonnie Lee Volkland, 84, died March 9 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born Jan. 16, 1922, at Bushton, the daughter of William F. and Mary (Schwerdtfeger) Volkland. A lifetime resident of Bushton, she was a retired employee of the Bushton State Bank. Volkland was a member of United Methodist Church in Bushton; Salt City Chapter of the American Business Women's Association and member of the Mutual Improvement Club of Bushton. Survivors include one nephew, Steven Chapelle of Phoenix, Ariz.; and one niece, Beth Chapelle of Phoenix, Ariz. She was preceded in death by one sister, Whila M. Chapelle. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials are suggested to Central Kansas Medical Center-Intensive Care Unit, or Buston First Responders in care of Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home. WICHITA - Maye Dupree, 81, died March 9 at College Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation in Wichita. She was born Jan. 25, 1925, at Pratt, the daughter of Henry and Jessie Calbell Blanton. She married John Dupree at Pratt. He preceded her in death. She was a homemaker. She was a resident of Wichita most of her life. She was a member of St. Paul A.M.E. of Wichita. Survivors include one brother-in-law, Sylvester Bibbs of Aurora, Colo.; and two nieces, Magda Dolatshahi of Great Bend, and Donna Lee Schooler of Aurora, Colo. She was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Blanton, and three sisters, Evalee Briscoe, Cecil Young and Bessie Bibbs. Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend with the Rev. Loyse Clay officiating. Interment will be at the Great Bend cemetery North in Great Bend. Robert F. "Bob" Schenk

HOISINGTON - Robert F. 'Bob' Schenk, 79, died March 8 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. He was born Dec. 6, 1926, at Olmitz, the son of William and Emily (Spitzka) Schenk. He married Mildred Ludington Helt Daniel on Dec. 10, 1988, at Hoisington. He was a resident of Hoisington since 1991 coming from Olmitz. He was a farmer, retiring in 1991. Schenk was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hoisington, and Knights of Columbus Council #2100 in Olmitz. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include his wife of the home; three step-daughters, Martha Haberman of Great Bend, Jacque Byers of Salina, and Susie Strosnider of Salina; three brothers, Harold Schenk and Bernard Schenk, both of Great Bend, and Edwin Schenk of Olmitz; 11 step-grandchildren; and 29 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, William Schenk; and two sisters, Christine Steiner and Magdalene Steiner. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. today followed by a K of C rosary, both at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hoisington with the Rev. Pascal Klein and Rev. Ultan Murphy officiating. Burial will be at St. Ann cemetery in Olmitz with military graveside rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7428 and American Legion Post #286. HUTCHINSON - Weston Joseph 'Wes' Hendrickson, 72, died March 6 at his home in Hutchinson. He was born Jan. 2, 1934, at Ford, the son of Ralph Henry and Elizabeth Anne Tockert Hendrickson. He was a 1952 graduate of Hutchinson High School. He married Shirley Ann Hurt on May 25, 1962, in Newton. A life long Hutchinson resident, he was a Locomotive Engineer for Santa Fe Railroad for 40 years. Hendrickson was a member of American Legion Lysle Richel Post #68, and United Transportation Union. He was in the Kansas Army National Guard. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Wayne Ehret and his wife Melissa of Houston, Texas, and Robert Ehret and his wife Letha of Amarillo, Texas; two daughters, Deanna and her husband Ray Nulf of Hutchinson, and Debra and her husband Gene Jones of Dumas, Texas; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Elliott Mortuary Chapel in Hutchinson with Chaplain Frederick J. Obold officiating. 1933 -2006 HERINGTON - Beverley June Werle, 72, formerly of White City, died March 8 at the Herington Municipal Hospital in Herington. She was born June 16, 1933, in Auckland, New Zealand, the daughter of Henry Charles and Ina McCarthy Dwyer. She married Guy Davis Werle on Aug. 11, 1951, in Auckland, New Zealand. He died Nov. 23, 1991. Survivors include two sons, Paul W. Werle of Ogden, and Stephen J. Werle of Wichita; five daughters, Adrienne K. Johnson of Herington, Donna-Marie Selle of Great Bend, Elizabeth A. Robertson of New Zealand, Sandra D. McKenzie of Parkerville, and Debbie Bell of Junction City; two brothers, Barry Dwyer of New Zealand, and Brent Thomassen of Australia, one sister, Karen Maxwell of Australia 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Penwell-Gabel Herington Chapel. She will lie in state that day from 9 a.m. until the time of service. HEIZER - Ramon LeRoy Knox, 79, died March 6 at the Hutchinson Hospital in Hutchinson. He was born Nov. 20, 1926, at Denver, Colo., the son of Velma Knox. He married Evelene Marie Horyna on Aug. 2, 1953, at Great Bend. He was a resident of Heizer since 1968, coming from Larned. He was a truck driver for Murphy Tractor and retired in 1989. Knox was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3111. He was a World War II veteran serving with the U.S. Navy. Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons, Brian L. Knox of Guam, and Wesley Knox of Heizer; one half-brother, James Dawson of Garden City; one half-sister, Maxine Atkinson of Garden City; and two grandchildren. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend with the Rev. Adam Wutka officiating. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to Heartland Cancer Center in care of the funeral home.

Lillian Margueritte Doherty

Lillian Margueritte 'Margie' Doherty, 91, died March 7 in Mulvane. She was born Oct. 4, 1914, at Eddy, Okla., the daughter of Daniel W. Hannegan and Eva Mae Steele. She was a 1932 graduate of Lamont, Okla., High School and a graduate of Oklahoma Academy of Beauty in Ponca City, Okla. She married John Henry Doherty on Feb. 17, 1941, at Great Bend. He died Oct. 15, 1997. She was a resident of Mulvane for the past six years, formerly of Ellinwood and Great Bend. She was a beautician at Irene's Beauty Shop in Great Bend for over 20 years. Doherty was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Great; Alter Society and Daughters of Isabella. Survivors include three sons, Bernie Doherty of Vacaville, Calif., Michael Doherty of Great Bend, and Daniel Doherty of Gering, Neb.; four daughters, Chris Mohn of Evansville, Ind., Katherine Sanford of Harlingen, Texas, Paula Slone, Derby, and Susan Beck of Mulvane; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Stephen; four brothers, Harry, Glenn, Dee and Roger; and one sister, Velma. Alter Society rosary will be at 3 p.m. Friday followed by D or I rosary and a vigil service at 7 p.m. Friday at Kimple Funeral Home in Ellinwood. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Rose Catholic Church in Great Bend with the Rev. Reggie Urban officiating. Burial will be at the Hillcrest cemetery in Great Bend. Kenneth Ray LeRoy
1932 - 2006
PLAINVILLE - Kenneth LeRoy passed away on March 7 at the Rooks County Nursing Home, Plainville. He was the only son born to Ray and Anna Blanch (Batman) LeRoy on April 22, 1932, in Great Bend. He graduated from Hudson High School in 1950 and entered the Army shortly thereafter. He married Orpha Alice Witt in June, 1952. He was stationed at the military bases in Fort Riley, El Paso, Texas, and Fairbanks, Ala., and was discharged from the Army in 1956. Kenneth lived most of his life on the family farm near Seward. He was a member of Peace United Church of Christ in Hudson. In 1989, he suffered from a stroke and had to leave the farm for health reasons. He resided at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend and Rooks County Nursing Home, Plainville, until his death. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Marian Sillin. He leaves behind four children, Kathy Marren of Fort Collins, Colo., Mike LeRoy (Jessie) of Saint John, Kristy Moore (Mark) of Fort Collins, Colo., and Karen Westhusin (Fred) of Plainville. He also leaves behind a sister, Norma Fischer (Herman, Jr.) of Seward; nine grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services are to be held at Charter Funeral Home in Great Bend on Saturday, March 11, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Wade Russell presiding, burial at the Great Bend cemetery with military honors provided by Fort Riley. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, March 10, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any memorials to be given to Rooks County Nursing Home, Plainville.
