August L. 'Buck' Schulte

RUSSELL - August L. 'Buck' Schulte, 71, died Thursday, April 20, at the Russell Regional Hospital. Buck was born Dec. 28, 1934, the son of August Frank and Rose Susan (Keiter) Schulte. He grew up in Pratt and attended the Sacred Heart School. Buck was united in marriage to Barbara Parr on April 3, 1959, in Tucumcari, N.M. He started working as a derrick hand in the oil fields. He worked for Lubar Pipe & Supply as a pipe tester. In 1964, Lubar moved Buck and his family to the Russell area. In 1979, he purchased the company from Specter Pipe & Supply. Buck was the owner and operator of the Schulte Pipe and Supply Inc. for many years. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Pratt. Buck loved the outdoors; he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and watching his grandkids at ball games. He also was a member of the Betty's Round Table at Gorham Cafe. Buck is survived by his wife of 47 years, Barbara of the home; son, Greg Schulte and wife Denise of Claflin; daughter, Susan Schulte and fiancé Wes Regensberg of Hugoton; son-in-law, Steve Gier of Rose Hill; daughter-in-law, Phyllis Schulte of Russell; brothers, Bob Schulte of Wichita, and Ed Schulte of Yukon, Okla.; sisters, Connie Mobley and Peggy Bradley, both of Wichita; grandchildren, Nathan Schulte, Brent Schulte, Jake Schulte, Jarett Schulte, David Gier, Trey Schulte, Tyler Nuss and Sonja Nuss; and great grandson, Logan Schulte. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Debra Kay Schulte-Gier; brothers, Gene Schulte and Jerry Schulte; and sisters, Melva Scarbrough and Patty Lehr. The Funeral Mass was Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Russell. The graveside committal was Monday at Highland cemetery in Medicine Lodge. Recitation of the Rosary was Sunday evening at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell. ELIZABETH, Colo. - Keith Charles Elsen, 41, died April 22 at the Swedish Memorial Hospital in Englewood, Colo. He was born March 31, 1965, in Great Bend, the son of Nick and Helen (Pohl) Elsen. Keith was employed by Central State Hose of Denver, Colo. Keith attended St. Patrick's Catholic Grade School and was a 1983 graduate of Great Bend High School. He was of the Catholic faith. Surviving family includes three daughters, Keisha, Kendra and Emily Elsen, all of Denver, Colo.; five brothers, Mark and wife Pam Elsen of Albert, Brian Elsen of Estes Park, Colo., Jerry Elsen of Great Bend, Kenny and wife Sheri Elsen of Great Bend, and Dennis and wife Rachel Elsen of Beloit; one sister, Denise Scott of Wichita; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Michael Elsen; maternal grandparents, Henry and Agnes Pohl; and paternal grandparents, Nicholas and Emelia Elsen. Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. Mountain Time today at the Parker Funeral Home in Parker, Colo., with Father Marty Hunkler presiding. Burial will be in Elizabeth cemetery, Elizabeth, Colo. ELLSWORTH - Rose P. Kempke, 91, died April 23, 2006, at Ellsworth County Medical Center in Ellsworth. She was born Dec. 20, 1914, in Ellsworth County, the daughter of Fred and Lucy Lorenz Schneider. She married
George Kempke on Sept. 14, 1935, at Lyons. He died Aug. 13, 2005. An Ellsworth resident and lifetime Ellsworth County resident, she was a homemaker and retired Otta Shop clerk. Mrs. Kempke was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Ellsworth. Survivors include two sons, Dean Kempke and wife Janice of Claflin, and Wayne Kempke and wife Carol of Hutchinson; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharen; two brothers and two sisters. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church in Ellsworth with Pastor Dennis Dufon officiating. LA CROSSE - Ola I. Wolter, 91, died Friday, April 21, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care in La Crosse. She was born Jan. 24, 1915, in Rush County, the daughter of Frank Price and Effie I. (Riggs) Price. A lifelong Rush County resident, Mrs. Wolter was the Rush County Register of Deeds Deputy Clerk for eight years, and the Rush County Register of Deeds for 10 years. She was a very active member of First Christian Church, and a member of Volunteer/Post Rock Museum, both of La Crosse. She married
Frank C. Wolter on Sept. 19, 1933, in Hutchinson. Survivors include two sons, Ronald F. Wolter and his wife Elaine C. Wolter of Moore Haven, Fla., and Roger D. Wolter of Wichita; three grandchildren, Dennis Wolter of Buckeye, Ariz., Sandra Wolter of Wichita, and Sara White of Kansas City; seven great-grandchildren, Jennifer Wolter, Jeff Wolter, Ian Wolter, Henry Mamalis, Lydia Mamalis, Elle White and Miles White; and four great-great-grandchildren, Rachel Wolter, Emily Wolter, Nolan Wolter, and Ella Wolter. KINGMAN - Ruby Lucille Strube, 90, was born on January 8, 1916, to Willie Hix Teel and Emma Jane (Broce) Teel in Council Grove, Kan. After graduating from Alta Vista High School in 1932, Ruby and her twin sister, Ruth, attended Emporia Teachers College receiving a teaching certificate in 1935. While in College Ruby belonged to Phi Mu Gamma sorority. After graduating, she taught two years in Morris County rural schools. On March 17, 1936 Ruby married
John Henry Strube at Westmoreland, Kan. To this union two children were born, JoAnn and John William. Ruby was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister who will always have a special place in so many people's lives. Ruby was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Holyrood, Kan., a past worthy matron of Eastern Star, a member of the Belmont Better Homes Club and the WTK club. She was an active 4-H leader while her children were in 4-H. Ruby was a homemaker and took care of John's books for his pumping career. Ruby lived in Kingman for the past 35 years. Ruby passed away on April 20, 2006, at the St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John, daughter Jo Ann Siemsen, son John Strube, and sister Ruth Mayberry. COLDWATER - John Theron White, 91, died Friday, April 21 at Pioneer Lodge in Coldwater. He was born July 3, 1914, on the family farm northwest of Coldwater, the son of Arthur Jesse and Anna (Maris) White. He married
Doris Pauline Tinker on Jan. 1, 1937 in Pratt. He was a farmer. He was a lifetime resident of Comanche County, Kansas. He attended Pleasant Ridge Rural School and graduated from Coldwater High School in 1934. He attended Kansas State College in Manhattan, Ks. He was a member of the Coldwater United Methodist Church. Other memberships include: 50 year member of Coldwater Masonic Lodge #295; Order of Eastern Star #224; Comanche County Farm Bureau; and he was an active board member for the local Co-Ops. He is survived by three sons: Ronald A. White and wife Pat of Coldwater, Ks., Marlan J. White and wife Betty of East Lansing, Michigan, and Theron E. White and friend Maria Cardozo of Pompano Beach, Florida; two daughters: Anita M. Jennison and husband Don of Arvada, Co. and Dolores P. Baker and husband John of Great Bend, Ks.; one sister: Nada Darlene Jarnagin of Conway, Arkansas; twelve grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife on June 20, 2005. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers: Maris E. White and Wallace M. THORNTON, Colo. - Joseph L. Sauer, 49, of Thornton, Colo., died April 4, 2006, at Kaiser Exempla Hospital, Lafayette, Colo. He was born Nov. 18, 1956, in La Crosse, the son of Edward and Mildred (Dempewolf) Sauer. He was a 1975 graduate of La Crosse High School in La Crosse. He worked for more than 20 years as a welder for Ornamental Iron Co., in Denver, Colo. Survivors include his mother, Mildred Sauer of La Crosse; one son, Travis and his wife Amanda and their son Holden of Belden, Miss.; two brothers, Jim and his wife Judy of Wichita and Mike and his wife Jana of Gering, Neb.; five sisters, Cheryl and her husband Terry Conard of Timken, Gloria and her husband Lance Morgan of Alexander, Marie and her husband Jim Herrman of Sharon, Okla., Deann and her husband Pat Mahoney of Geary, Okla., and Suzanne Sauer and Jim Harrell of La Crosse; many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. Marilyn Kellogg, 73, of Great Bend died Wednesday at Cheyenne Meadows Living Center in Hosington. She was born Jan. 10, 1933, at Radium, the daughter of Willie Green and Aurice Parrish Estes. She married
Eugene Deckert on June 13, 1948, in Radium. He preceded her in death on May 1, 1976. She married
Everett Kellogg on Feb. 2, 1979, in Spearville. He preceded her in death on Aug. 21 1998. She was a homemaker and resident of Great Bend since 1999, moving from Harilingen, Texas. Mrs. Kellogg was a member of the First Christian Church in Great Bend, and a member of the Radium Rangers Senior Center. Survivors include two daughters, Trudy Winsor of Caney, and Donna Spencer of Mesa, Ariz.; one step-daughter Veanna Rousseau of Auburn; one brother Glen Estes of Sherwood, Ariz.; two sisters Orva Jean Oehler, of Elfers, Fla., and Dolores Crawford, of Hoisington; five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and five step-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two half-brothers Even B. Estes and Ray Estes; one sister Carol Moore, and two half- sisters Hazel Barstow, and Opal Brannan. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on May 1 at the church with the Rev. William F. Johnson presiding. Burial will follow at the Bergthall Mennonite cemetery in Pawnee Rock. Julia M. Burke, 97, died April 18 at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great Bend. She was born May 3, 1908, in Hodgeman County, the daughter of James and Cora Mudd Hayden. She married
William C. Burke on Nov. 13, 1928, at Mount Vernon. He died Jan. 26, 1992. A resident of Great Bend since 1977 coming from Hodgeman County, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Burke was a member of the Catholic Community of Great Bend at St. Patrick and St. Patrick Altar Society. Survivors include five sons, William J. 'Bill' Burke of Newton, Lawrence Burke of Sorrento, Fla., John Burke and Claude Burke, both of Denver, Colo., Donald Burke of Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters, Rosemary Sanko of Great Bend, and Julie M. Stolz of St. George Utah; one sister, Cora Sterbenz of Wichita; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Jim, Paul, and Austin Hayden; and three sisters, Olive Dusing, Sister Ignatius Hayden and Cletus Gegan. She was a resident of Great Bend. Sherri was a Registered Nurse in the Psychology Field. She was a member of Extreme Hope Christian Fellowship Church in Great Bend. Survivors include one son, Eric Volkland and Nanett Conrad of St. Louis, Mo. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ann Guthrie. RUSSELL - Allan D. Evans, 83 of Russell, Kansas died Monday, April 17, 2006 at Russell Regional Hospital, after a short illness. Evans was born December 5, 1922 on the family farm near Columbus, Kansas, the second son of Allie A. and Gertrude (Lopp) Evans. His parents, brother, Marion and sister, Anna Maude Bauer all preceded him in death. Survivors are: wife, Evelyn (Ralston) of the home; son, David A. Evans and wife Cindy of Russell; daughter, Diana L. Maier and husband Richard of Kechi, Kansas; granddaughter, Danni Eldred and husband Jon and family Chad, Ruby, and Katy of Yorktown, Virginia; granddaughter, Christi Tenholder and husband Tim and family Jon, Ryan, and Andrew of Topeka, Kansas; grandson, Shawn Evans and wife Sara and family, Alyssa, Cade, Bailey, Cael and Caleigh Evans; grandson Scott Evans and wife Kendra and son, Wyatt all of Russell; granddaughter Michelle (Keenan) Casey and husband Spencer and family Laura and Hailey of Hays, Kansas; granddaughter and grandson, respectively, Ariane Evans and Brandon Evans, both of St. Louis, Missouri. Evans was the General Manager of the Russell Daily News, the Russell Record and the Natoma-Luray Independent, of Natoma, Kansas, and a stockholder of Russell Publishing Company, Inc., for 42 years. In 1989, is lifelong partner, Russell T. Townsley, sold his interests in the publishing company and retired. Evans then became both publisher and general manager until he sold the newspapers in May of 2000. From 1987 forward the Kansas Press Association considered him the 'Dean of Kansas newspaper publishers.' Evans attended rural, elementary and high school in Columbus. Early in his life he became involved with the Columbus Daily Advocate, first carrying newspapers, then becoming a printer's devil and later a Linotype operator during his high school years. After graduation from Cherokee County Community High School, Evans was recruited by Thomas Rither, Superintendent of the William Allen White School of Journalism print shop to go to Lawrence, Kansas, and work as a Linotype operator while attending the University of Kansas. When WWII erupted, Evans enlisted in the U.S. Naval Air Corps to become a pilot. Later, he had Naval training at William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri and was transferred out of the Naval Air Corps and into Quartermaster's School at the Naval Training Station at Great Lakes, Illinois and Midshipmen's School in Chicago, Illinois. Evans became the USS Kingsbury's Navigation officer and third in command. Evans returned to Columbus and soon became publisher and general manager of the Modern Light, a small weekly newspaper. During that time he met Evelyn, who began working for him at the paper and they were married
later, November 28, 1946. Evans was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #6240 and the American Legion William Roe Post 99, and life long member of the Kansas Press Association, the Masonic Lodge, the Russell Elks Lodge, Loins Club of Columbus, 56 year member of Russell Noon Kiwanis, Toastmasters International, an Eagle Scout and advancement co-chairman for two Russell Boy Scout Troops, Lake Wilson Development Association, Russell Junior Chamber of Commerce, Russell representative on Central Kansas Industrial Development Committee in the 1950's. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Russell and at age 16 became a deacon in the First Christian Church of Columbus. Evans was commander of Post #99 during 1975-76 and was instrumental in the creation of the Avenue of Flags along the outside perimeter at the Russell City cemetery. The funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 am Friday, April 21, 2006 at the First Congregational Church of Russell. Pastor Steve Culver is officiating the services. Interment will follow at the Russell cemetery. Visitation is scheduled to be today 10 am to 8 pm. The family will be present to greet family and friends from 6:30 to 8 pm.
