Stacy Rowe on April 23, 2005, at Great Bend. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, he was employed with Asplund Tree Service. Dino was a member of the Catholic Community of Great Bend at St. Patrick, and Town and Country Racquet Club, Great Bend. Survivors include his wife, of the home; one son, Cayden Dino of the home; his parents, Gary and Mary Dino of Great Bend; and one half-brother, Bowen Dino of Hutchinson. HOISINGTON - Dorothy Hester, 81, died May 19, 2006, at Hutchinson Hospital in Hutchinson. She was born Aug. 31, 1924, in Barton County, Kan., the daughter of Daniel and Paulena (Kittel) Miller. She married
Harold H. Hester on July 22, 1945, at Hoisington. A longtime resident of the Hoisington-Galatia area, she was a retired employee of Suburban Laundry, Apparel Master and Cintas of Hoisington, Kan., after 35 years of service. Mrs. Hester was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Galatia. Dorothy also received her GED at the age of 60 and attended college at the age of 62. Survivors include her husband, Harold, of the home; sons Daniel 'Jerry' Hester and wife Dianne of Lubbock, Texas and David L. Hester Sr. and wife Margaret of Great Bend; sister Elsie Keener, Hoisington; and three grandchildren, David Lynn Hester Jr., Michael Paul Hester and JoyAnna Hester Baggett. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Linda Sue Hester; a brother, Clarence Miller; and five sisters, Arvina Laudick, Stella Laudick, Lucie Cromwell, Edna Winter and Vida Miller. ELLINWOOD - Dr. E. E. (Gene) Slough, 80, died May 21 at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. He was born June 22, 1925, at Quincy, the son of Orin Herbert Slough and Anna Belle Huston. He was a graduate of Gridley High School and the Kansas Chiropractic College in Wichita. He married
Josephine Whitaker on June 20, 1948, in Dunlap. An Ellinwood resident for 48 years, he was a chiropractor, retiring in 1990 after 30 years. Dr. Slough was a member of the United Methodist Church, 50 year Lions Club member, American Legion Post No. 320, and past president of the Heritage Club, all of Ellinwood; and former member of the Kansas Association of Chiropractors. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving as a Seabee with the 129th NCB in the Pacific Theatre. Survivors include his wife, Jo of the home; two daughters, Marla Isern of Ellinwood and Katrina Penka of Redwing; one brother, Alfred Slough of Raymond; one sister, Carrie Birk of Gridley; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. to James B. (Jim) Lowery on Oct. 18, 1986, in Wilson. Mrs. Lowery worked as a computer support specialist for the University of Missouri System. She was an active member of the St. Thomas Moore Newman Center, Midway Heights Elementary PTA, serving as membership chair, and she served as Bingo Commander for the Pride Earthquakes soccer team. She was also a committed volunteer at her children's schools, church and for the Girl Scouts. Mrs. Lowery is survived by her parents, Louis and Theresa Kasper of Wilson; her husband, James B. (Jim) Lowery of the home; two daughters, Michelle Ann and Melissa Grace Lowery of Columbia, Mo.; one son, Daniel Louis Lowery of Columbia, Mo.; one brother, John Kasper and his wife Lynn of Wilson; one sister, Mary Vopat and her husband Richard of Wilson; and numerous nieces and nephews. RUSSELL - Earl L. Homewood, 73, died May 20 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays. He was born Oct. 3, 1932, on the family farm near Luray, the son of Frank H. and Anna Belle (Reed) Homewood. He was a graduate of Luray High School. He married
Kay Brehm on Aug. 26, 1956, in Luray. He worked for the United Telephone Company until he joined the U.S. Army in 1953. After his military duty, he started working for the Union Pacific Telegraph, and then worked for the City of Russell in the Electrical Department, retiring in 1997 as the director after 41 years. Homewood was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church, president of the Kansas Municipalities, co-chairman of the Oil Patch Museum, American Legion, and was on the Historical Society Board. Survivors include his wife, Kay of the home; two daughters, Cindy Peterson of Camarillo, Calif., and Tracy Feil of Garwin, Iowa; his step-mother, Melba Homewood of Luray; two brothers, Alvin G. Homewood of Halstead, and Gerald L. Homewood of Phoenix, Ariz.; one sister, Gloria Amen of Aurora, Colo.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother. HOISINGTON - Nathalia 'Dollie' Niedens, 98, died May 20 at Cheyenne Meadows Living Center in Hoisington. She was born Aug. 29, 1907, in Russell County, the daughter of Gottfried and Julianna (Weimer) Dumler. She married
Rudolph Niedens on March 8, 1931, in Russell County. He died Oct. 9, 1987. A lifetime resident of Russell and Barton counties, she was a homemaker and a nurses aide. Mrs. Niedens was a member of the Concordia Lutheran Church and LWML of Hoisington. Survivors include three sons, Herman 'Lou' Niedens of Kingston, Okla., Robert Niedens of Park City and Don Niedens of Great Bend; one daughter, Bernice Deines of Hoisington; one brother, Paul Dumler of Mesa, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two infant sons, Paul L. and Gale F. Niedens; four brothers, Fred, Henry, Sam and Rudolph Dumler; and four sisters, Susanna Miller, Katie Herdt, Anna Strecker and Othella 'Tillie' Niedens. John 'Jack' Edward Hester

LARNED - John 'Jack' Edward Hester, 95, died May 18 at his home in Larned. He was born Jan. 1, 1911, in Hosington the son of Edward and Lunda Lane Coburn Hester. A longtime Larned resident, he was with the Federal Land Bank of Wichita for 37 years, making and servicing farm and ranch loans. He retired from the Federal Land Bank in 1976 as president of the Larned-area office. After retiring, he was a land appraiser for 25 years. He graduated from Hoisington High School then attended Kansas State University. He was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. A World War II veteran in the European Theater for 26 months, he served in the Signal Corps in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany. He was involved in eight battle campaigns and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church, Larned, where he served as deacon for many years, a 50-year member of the Larned Kiwanis Club serving as president in 1976, a lifetime member of the Larned Veterans of Foreign Wars, and an active member of the Gideons. Christine C. Crouch at Charlotte, N.C. She died Aug. 30, 1997. Survivors include: A daughter, Judy Eshelman and her husband, Jon, Tulsa, Okla.; grandsons Ryan Eshelman and his wife Libby, Norman, Okla., Jay Eshelman and his wife Kim, Tulsa, Brandon Eshelman, Salt Lake City, Utah; and four great grandchildren. TIMKEN - Edward Joe 'Ed' Jecha, 80, died May 19 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born Feb. 16, 1926, in rural Rush Center, the son of Joe Edward Jecha and Anna (Oborny) Jecha. He married
Rosarie Baxa on May 4, 1948, in Belleville. A lifelong resident of Rush County, Jecha was a 1944 graduate of La Crosse High School and received his certificate for the completion of the electronics course from The DeVry Technical Institute. He worked at the Timken State Bank, later becoming a licensed television serviceman and serving as Timken City Clerk and water person for 27 years. In 1989, he retired from serving as a rural mail carrier. Jecha was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Timken and was a past board member for the church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 2100 in Olmitz; Catholic Workman Lodge and life member and past adjutant for American Legion Post No. 353, both in Timken; and was a member and past leader of Recovery Inc. in Great Bend. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Thomas E Jecha of Viola and Edward F. Jecha of Hutchinson; five daughters, Cecilia J. May of Lawrence, Margaret M. Waterman of Bonaire, Ga., Mary E. Casselman of Arlington, Texas, Rita J. Andress of Great Bend and Jane M. Jacobs of Garden City; a sister, Blanche A. TOPEKA - Norman Glenn Spillman, 79, died May 17 at Topeka. He was born March 5, 1927, in Selden, the son of Glenn R. and Myrtle Fern Aumiller Spillman. He attended schools in Hoxie and Hutchinson. He married
Judy Donnelly, who preceded him in death. Spillman served in the U.S. Army during World War II, with the Air Force in the Vietnam conflict and then retired as a master tech sergeant with the Air National Guard after 32 years of military service. Survivors include his son, Kevin Glenn Spillman of Albany, Ore.; two daughters, Aneta Lee Bonham of California and Star Lyn Roberson of Hardtner; two stepdaughters, Cynthia Bailey of Germany and Michelle Majeroni of Topeka; and a stepson Tim Donnelly of Arizona; two brothers, Ronald Spillman and Stanton B. Spillman both of Hutchinson; two sisters, Ardith Marcum and Carolyn Miller both of Hutchinson; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister Cora Rude and a brother Franklin Udell Spillman. He was cremated with a celebration of life to be held at a later date. Pattie Hatten, Nov. 4, 1960, in Lamar. He was known for his love of sports, watching his children then grandchildren in sports. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Anyone who knew him when they saw him would say, 'been fishing?' 'caught any fish today?' or 'got your deer yet?' He loved gardening and the outdoors. He was a member of Cornerstone Fellowship Church in Great Bend. Survivors include his wife Pattie of the home; two sons, Richard Sanders Jr. and Sharon of Hoisington and Ron Sanders and Lori of Hoisington; a daughter Tanya Sanders of Hesperia, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, Liz Lindsner of Hoisington, Ben Sanders of Great Bend, Justin Sanders of Dexter, Mo., Jessica McNaught of Hesperia, Richard Dean Sanders III of Hoisington, T.J. McNaught, Angel McNaught and Shelby McNaught of Hesperia; two great grandchildren, Austin Lindsner of Hoisington and Aiden Sanders of Dexter; and one brother, Tony Sanders of Lamar, Colo. JACKSON, Miss. - Robert A. Francis, 60, died May 9 at G. V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center in Jackson, Miss. He was born June 7, 1945, in Breda, Iowa, the son of Clarence 'Pete' and Thelma Francis. He worked in the oilfield service industry in Central Kansas. Coming from Great Bend, he had lived along the Mississippi Gulf Coast since the mid1990s. Francis was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1963 to 1968. Survivors include his mother, Thelma Francis of Carroll, Iowa; two daughters, Caryl Niedens and husband Lyle, of Westwood and Lisa Francis of Great Bend; one brother, James Francis of Philadelphia, Miss.; and two grandsons, Conley and Pierce Niedens. He was preceded in death by his father, a daughter, Lori Francis, and an infant twin brother, Aaron. DODGE CITY - Margaret Jane 'Janie' Stein, 90, died Monday, May 15, 2006, at Western Plains Medical Complex, Dodge City, Kan. She was born Sept. 14, 1915, in Thayer, Kan., the daughter of Samuel Fell and Mary Anastasia (O'Donnell) Jones. A Dodge City resident since 2004, she had previously lived in Ashland, Kan., for 50 years, and also in Fairfield, Iowa, and Great Bend, Kan. She was a dental assistant with her son Stephen, and secretary for Howell Insurance in Ashland before retiring in 1980. She was president of the Ashland Chamber of Commerce, a member of the 20th Century Study Club, Silver-Haired Legislature, Grandmothers for Peace, Big Basin Foundation, Dominican Associates, D.A.R., Ashland Study Club, and the Tuesday-Nighters Bridge Club. On October 12, 1937, she married
Cletus G. Stein, D.D.S., in Parsons, Kan. He died June 10, 1960. Survivors include four sons: Stephen F. and wife Jane, Richard J. and wife Peggy, all of Dodge City, Cletus G. 'Jerry' Stein, Amarillo, Texas and John Paul Stein, Liberal, Kan.; two daughters: Marianne S. Wancura, Salida, Colo. and Janie Marie Stein and husband Martin Bates, Salina, Kan., 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph Jones and Richard Jones, a sister, Sister Cyrilla Jones, CSJ, and a grandson, Patrick Stein.
