Obituary: Mary L. Cordon, 90, Manhattan, KS passed away Friday, September 1, 2006 in the Stoneybrook Health Care Center, Manhattan.

She was born January 21, 1916 at Independence, MO, the daughter of Charles David Gudgell and Lu Etta Longshie Gudgell. She grew up on the family ranch in Graham County, KS, where she attended the local schools and was a graduate of the Edmond, KS Rural High School. She later attended the Our Lady Good Council Academy in Dallas, TX and the Community College at Arlington, TX. She received her B.A. degree in Secondary Education from Kansas State Agricultural College, Manhattan in 1938.

For five years, she taught high school in Paradise, KS and during World War II served with the U.S. Navy as a WAV. She had been a Manhattan resident since 1945.

She was united in marriage to Keller Cordon on January 31, 1947 at Olathe, KS. He survives of the home.

Mrs. Cordon was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church, PTA, Manhattan Country Club, KSU Investment Club and was a lifetime member of the KSU Alumni Association. Her interests included playing golf, bowling and wildlife conservation.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Cordon is survived by a daughter, Patricia Gail Berlin, Jackson, WY; a son, Frank K. Cordon, and his wife, Peggy, Wichita; five grandchildren, Christopher Cordon, Lisa Cordon, Mark Cordon, Lauren Berlin and Patrick Berlin; and two great granddaughters, Aubree and Malaina Cordon.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Charles, Frank and John Gudgell; and a sister, Dorothy Belle Gudgell.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 6, 2006 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday in the Mt. Washington Cemetery, Independence, MO.

The family of Mrs. Cordon will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home.

Obituary: Sadie May Tomasch, 86, a former Manhattan, KS resident, passed away Sunday, September 3, 2006 in a St. Joseph, MO nursing home.

She was born November 1, 1919 at Lake Placid, NY, the daughter of Nelson and Victoria Bushy Pelkey. She grew up in Lake Placid where she attended the local schools and was a graduate of the Lake Placid High School.

As a young woman, Mrs. Tomasch was a professional ice skater and skated with the Ice Capades. While skating at the 1939 World’s Fair, held in New York City, she met and later married Elmer J. Tomasch, a caricature artist also working at the World’s Fair. Mr. Tomasch preceded her in death on May 12, 1977.

The Tomasch’s lived in New York City for several years before moving to Manhattan in 1947 where Mr. Tomasch was a professor in the Art Department at Kansas State University for over 30 years. While living in Manhattan, Mrs. Tomasch attended the St. Isidore Catholic Student Center. She was an avid gardener and homemaker and enjoyed literature and traveling. After her husband’s death, Mrs. Tomasch lived in Oak Ridge, TN for 11 years and had lived in St. Joseph for the last seven and one-half years.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Tomasch was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Katherine Martin.

Survivors include three sons, Lyndon Tomasch, and his wife, Linda, Olathe, KS and Kim Tomasch and Bret Tomasch, both of St. Joseph; two granddaughters, Lisa Sonsthagen, and her husband, Larry and Lori Taylor, both of Olathe; and four great grandchildren, Matthew and Emily Sonsthagen and Marisa and Riley Taylor, all of Olathe.

Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 7, 2006 in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan with the Rev. Keith Weber officiating. Burial will be in the Sunrise Cemetery.

He was born April 4, 1985 at Sheboygan, WI, the son of Jon D. Wilson and Barbara Ness Wilson. He grew up in Minnesota and attended the local schools.

He served in the U.S. Air Force and had been a Manhattan resident since November 2005.

Survivors include his fiancé, Sarah Burris Brock, Manhattan; his parents, Jon and Barbara Wilson, Hill City, SD; and a brother, Ryan Wilson, Minneapolis, MN.

Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 5, 2006 in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan with the Rev. Alan Selig officiating.

Obituary: Louise M. Littrell, 91, Manhattan, KS passed away Monday, August 21, 2006 in the Meadowlark Hills/Collins Landing, Manhattan.

She was born November 1, 1914 at Albia, Iowa, the daughter of George D. Miller and Grace Perry Miller. She attended the public schools in Albia, the Albia Junior College and the Iowa State Teachers College. For three years, she taught schools near her home in Albia.

She was united in marriage to J. Harvey Littrell by the vicar of the Grace Episcopal Church at Albia. He preceded her in death on March 13, 2001.

During her married years, Louise lived in Sioux City, IA, Columbia, MO and Hastings, NE before coming to Manhattan in 1954. During these years she was a homemaker for her husband and four sons.

She was a faithful member of the Episcopal Church all of her life and was active in church organizations. Louise was initiated in P.E.O. in Albia, IA in 1935 in her mother’s chapter. Her six sisters were also initiated in that chapter. In Manhattan, Louise is a member of Chapter BD. She is also a member and past president of the Domestic Science Club, life member of the Riley County Genealogical Society, the Riley County Historical Society and the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

In addition to her husband, Louise was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Frances Miller, Susan Simonson, Ruth Thormyer and Martha Miller; and one brother, Philip Miller.

Survivors include four sons, John Littrell, and his wife, Mary, Ft. Collins, CO, Robert Littrell, and his wife, Ingrid, Cascade, CO, David Littrell, and his wife, Laurel, Manhattan and Stephen Littrell, and his wife, Deborah, Austin, TX; a brother, George Miller, Mexico City, Mexico; two sisters, Mary Ann Wilkinson, Tulsa, OK and Grace Hartzell, Oklahoma; four grandsons, Joshua Littrell, and his wife, Julie, Nathan Littrell, and his wife, Carrie, Matthew Littrell, and his wife, Lisa and Thomas Littrell; four great grandsons, Jacob, Jared and Charlie and Cooper Littrell; and three great granddaughters, Stephanie, Abbey and Katie Littrell.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, August 24, 2006 in the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Thomas D. Miles officiating. Cremation will follow with inurnment services at a later date in the Sunset Cemetery.

Obituary: Raymond D. Schurle, 91, Manhattan, KS passed away Thursday, August 17, 2006 in the Meadowlark Hills/Starkey House, Manhattan.

He was born April 13, 1915 at Clay Center, KS, the son of Ervin Schurle and Rosa Heilman Schurle. He grew up in Clay County and western Riley County, where he attended the local schools and was a 1933 graduate of the Keats Rural High School.

He was united in marriage to Winona Christine Berggren on February 8, 1938 at Riley, KS. She lives at 153 Miller Place, 2121 Meadowlark Hills, Manhattan.

Mr. Schurle had been a lifelong resident of the Manhattan/Keats area and was a diary farmer for many years.

He was a member of the Keats United Methodist Church and served as a Sunday School teacher. He later became a member of the Grace Baptist Church, Manhattan and served on the Building Committee for many years. In the 1950’s, he was active on the Riley County Extension Board.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, George and David Schurle.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Schurle is survived by a daughter, Carole Jean Crumbaker,, and her husband, Charles, Salina, KS; two grandchildren, Lynnette Dillon, Manhattan and Lesley Kurre, and her husband, Wesley, Perryville, MO; four great grandchildren, Devin Dillon, Lawrence, KS and Riley, Reece and Brock Kurre, all of Perryville; and a sister-in-law, Gladys Schurle, Manhattan.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m., Monday, August 21, 2006 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with Pastor Robert Flack officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Cemetery, Manhattan.

Obituary: Fred Lawrence Ebert, 80, Manhattan, KS passed away Sunday, August 13, 2006 in the Stoneybrook Health Care Center, Manhattan.

He was born March 23, 1926 in Pottawatomie County, KS, the son of Lawrence E. Ebert and Margaret Ann Schmitz Ebert. He grew up on the family farm near Flush, KS, where he attended the local schools and was a 1944 graduate of the Flush High School.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving from 1951-1954.

He was united in marriage to Frieda M. “Fritzy” Unterberger on October 17, 1956 at Flush. She survives of the home.

Fred was a lifetime farmer/rancher in the Flush community until moving to Manhattan in 2000.

He was a member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 4th Degree Knights of the St. Thomas McNeive Assembly, Knights of Columbus No. 902, Flush and was a 50-year member of the Pearce-Keller American Legion Post No. 17, Manhattan.

In addition to his wife, Fred is survived by a daughter, Linda E. Watson, and her husband, Bill, Kansas City, MO; four sons, Douglas Lee Ebert, and his wife, Clara, St. George, KS, David J. Ebert, and his fiancée, Natalie Young, Manhattan, Mark A. Ebert, and his wife, Mary, Wamego and Lawrence D. Ebert, and his wife, Sherri, Jacksonville, FL; two brothers, Clyde Ebert, and his wife, Geraldine and Delbert Ebert, and his wife, Betty, both of Wamego; eleven grandchildren, Tiffany Ebert, Chelsea Ebert, Cassandra Ebert, Jennifer Watson, Phillip Watson, Matthew Watson, Jason Watson, Melissa Ebert, Mandy Ebert, Macy Ebert and Mariah Ebert; and a sister-in-law, Dolores Ebert, St. George.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Paul Ebert.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 16, 2006 in the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Flush with Father John Pilcher as celebrant. Cremation will follow with a private family inurnment, at a later date, in the St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery.

Rosary services will be at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, August 15, 2006 at the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan.

She was born February 17, 1925 in Norfolk, VA, the daughter of Roscius and Lilly Mae (Miles) Howell.

She was married to Clyde Q. Murphy in Virginia and he preceded her in death on October 8, 1993. Dorothy was a member of the Red Hat Society.

Survivors include her children, David Murphy, and his wife, Patti, Raleigh, NC, Thomas Murphy, and his wife, Deanna and Kelly Murphy, and his wife, Mary, all of Hamilton; two brothers, Robert and Jack Howell, both of Virginia; nine grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Murphy was preceded in death by three daughters, Sharon Little, Patricia Murphy and Pamela Murphy.

Graveside services were held Friday, August 11, 2006 in the Sunset Cemetery, Manhattan. The family suggests memorials be directed to Hospice of Cincinnati at Blue Ash, 4310 Cooper Rd., Blue Ash, OH 45242. The Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan was in charge of local arrangements.
