GREAT BEND - John L. Liston, 79, died June 26 at Lake Wilson. He was born March 10, 1927, at La Crosse, the son of Jack and Anna Stremel Liston. He attended Great Bend High School. He married Ruth E. Vogel on May 16, 1950, in Topeka. He worked in the oil industry for Peters Drilling Company for over 30 years, and then worked as a senior production superintendent for Williams Brothers Engineering out of Tulsa, Okla., for six years. After retiring he did consulting work. He was a longtime resident of Great Bend. Liston was a member of the Catholic Community of Great Bend at St. Rose, where he served as Eucharist Minister, served on the Parish Council and on other Diocesan committees. He was also a member of Knights of Columbus and American Legion Argonne Post 180 all of Great Bend. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, of the home; three sons, John C. Liston, Kevin M. Liston and Mathew P. Liston, all of Larned; three daughters, Mary Ellen Liston McDonald of Reseda, Calif., Kathleen McGahee of Woodstock, Ga., and Patricia Neybert of Ellijay, Ga.; three sisters, Anne Owens of Eskridge, Susan Horn of Topeka, and Helen Horsley of Bedford, Texas; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Vigil service with Knights of Columbus rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend with the Rev. Reginald A. Urban officiating. Burial will be at the Great Bend cemetery. Friends may call today from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Catholic Community of Great Bend in care of the funeral home.

Elsie (Niedenthal) Janke
1905 - 2006
RUSSELL - Elsie (Niedenthal) Janke, 100, of Russell, died Monday afternoon, June 26, at the Main Street Manor of Russell Regional Hospital. Elsie was born Dec. 13, 1905, in Russell County, the daughter of Michael and Katherine (Schwien) Niedenthal. She grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School. Elsie worked at the Bankers Department Store in Russell as a clerk in the clothing department for many years. She was united in marriage to David H. Janke on Sept. 24, 1939, in Russell. David's job took them to Roswell, N.M. Elsie was a devoted homemaker. They moved back to the Russell area in the mid '70s. David preceded her in death on July 5, 1978. Elsie was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church. She enjoyed singing in the church choir when she was younger. She also enjoyed bowling and was known as a wonderful seamstress. She is survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Ferdinand, Emil, and Frederick; and three sisters, Amalia 'Molly' Stricker, Pauline Deines and Hannah Niedenthal. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. on Friday, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell. Interment will follow at the Russell City cemetery. Pastor Peter Rupprecht will be officiating the services. Visitation will be Thursday, at the mortuary; the casket will be closed. A memorial has been established with the St. John's Lutheran Church. Mildred B. Mull, 91, of Great Bend died June 28 at her home. She was born May 11, 1915, in Great Bend, the daughter of August Henry and Anna Marie Gagelman Werhahn. She married Elmer Mull Nov. 4, 1934, in Great Bend. He died Feb. 14, 1983. She was a homemaker and lifetime resident of Great Bend. Mrs. Mull was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Mini Study and Ladies Church Circle. She was survived by one son, Gene Mull and wife Patsy, daughter-in-law Kay Mull, brother Gus Werhahn, sister Mable Hiss all of Great Bend, four grandchildren Tamzen Bright and Husband Todd, of Dallas, Texas; Ty Mull and wife Shannon, of Great Bend; Natalie Dueser and husband Terry, of Wichita; Tobin Mull and wife Jerri Ann, of Great Bend; nine great grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one son Bill Mull, and two sisters Margaret Werhahn and Elfreda Walker. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, with the Rev. James A Strasen officiating. Burial will follow at the Great Bend cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Trinity Lutheran Church or Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice in care of the funeral home. Richard Lee Christiansen
1941 - 2006
ONTARIO, Calif. - Richard Lee Christiansen, 64, died June 1 at Ontario, Calif. He was born July 5, 1941, in Great Bend, the son of Ralph and Elsie Christiansen. He attended schools in Great Bend. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1959 to 1963 as a submariner. Survivors include two sons, Benjamin H. Christiansen of Rogers, Ark., and James L. Christiansen of Hesperia, Calif.; three brothers, Ralph Christiansen of Murdock, and Jesse Christiansen of Great Bend, and Gerald Christiansen of Hoisington; one sister, Mae Bollinger of Utica; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held Monday at Draper Mortuary in Ontario, Calif. Draper Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

John P. Meister, 87, of Great Bend, died June 25 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born Aug. 13, 1918, at Sterling, Colo., the son of Andrew G. and Anna T. Niemeth Meister. He married Dorothy Koch on April 8, 1947, in Great Bend. She died in October 1982. He married Florine Koochel on Aug. 10, 1985, in Timken. A resident of Great Bend for most of his life, he was a postal clerk. Meister was a member of the Catholic Community of Great Bend at St. Rose; Knights of Columbus and was a fourth degree knight; American Legion Argone Post No. 180; Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 3111, all in Great Bend; and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Corp. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Jeffery L. Meister of Reston, Va.; two daughters, Rosemary Luthi of Kinsley, and Barbara Schul of Garden City; four step-sons, Michael Koochel and Patrick Koochel, both of Great Bend, Mark Koochel of Albert, and Kevin Koochel of Salina; three step-daughters, Karen Axman of Olmitz, Jane Brady of Albert, and Judi Webster of Hutchinson; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; 20 step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by one son, John Gregory Meister and three sisters, Florence Meister, Helen Meister and Margaret Meister. HOISINGTON - Carl W. Krieger, 76, died June 25 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born Jan. 19, 1930, at Hoisington, the son of Herman E. and Mary (Duncan) Krieger. He married Lucinia Burtnett on Nov. 9, 1970, at Hoisington. A lifetime Hoisington resident, he worked as an oil field roughneck for 28 years and retired from the city of Hoisington at the power plant. Krieger was a member of the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7428, American Legion Post No. 286, all of Hoisington; and a member of the Golden Belt Motor Railroad Club in Great Bend. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. Survivors include his wife of Great Bend; two sons, Carl Krieger, Jr. of Arkansas, and Daniel Krieger of Ottumwa, Iowa; two step-sons, Darren Marsell of Ottawa, and Douglas Marsell of Gorham; one step-daughter, Rhonda Jean Carryer of Ogden; four grandchildren; and eight step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Francis 'Bud' Krieger; and four sisters, Alice Marie Ehly, Marge Nettleingham, Barbara Jones and Betty Bickel. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday followed by a rosary at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Muriel Peters Green, of Great Bend, died June 24 at Alterra Sterling House of Great Bend. She was born May 3 at Cedar Vale, the daughter of James and Ethal Bray Whited. She had been married to John Shaffer who is deceased, Arch Peters, deceased and Larry Green, deceased. She was a buyer for Komarek Jewelry in Great Bend. She was a resident of Great Bend for 70 years, coming from Oklahoma City, Okla. Mrs. Green was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Glamour Club, Bridge Club and Golden Belt Country Club, all in Great Bend. Survivors include serveral nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Lloyd Whited, Tillmen Whited, Roland Whited and Mitchell Whited; and five sisters, Alice Hammel, Mildred Hasty, Ruby Stabelor, Ruth McLaughlin and Cleo Fuller. Graveside service will be at 9 a.m. at the Great Bend cemetery, with the Rev. Hal Staats officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Bryant Funeral Home. Marilyn L. Zimmerman, 72, of Great Bend, died June 25 at Hospice of Reno Co., Hospice House in Hutchinson. She was born Dec. 5, 1933, in Hoisington, the daughter of Roy and Beulah (Colhour) Stoskopf. She married Theodore 'Jay' Zimmerman on Feb. 17, 1952, at Hoisington. He died Feb. 2, 2001. A rural Great Bend resident, she was a former employee of Midplains Finance in Great Bend and the former owner/operator of Jamar Transportation Incorporation, Dodge City. Mrs. Zimmerman was of the Methodist faith and a member of Great Bend Karting Association in Great Bend. Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Zimmerman of Plevna, and Debbie Zimmerman of Arlington; one brother, L.R. Stoskopf of Hoisington; one sister, Beverly Tauscher of Ark City; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. preceded in death by a son Greg Zimmerman. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington, with the Rev. Wayne Flanders officiating. Burial will be at the Hoisington cemetery. ELLIS - Elizabeth Alice Wade, 85, Ellis, died Friday, June 16, at Ellis Good Samaritan Center. She was born Dec. 26, 1920, in Great Bend to Harry H. and Elizabeth C. (Monger) Frey. She married George Wade on June 8, 1943. He preceded her in death March 16, 1945. She was retired from Hadley Regional Medical Center as a licensed mental health technician and also was a self-employed seamstress. She was a member of the United Methodist Church Ministries. Survivors include three sons, Ronald Wade and wife, Marguerite, of Lafayette, La., Donald Wade and wife, Marie, of Dodge City, and Gordon Wade, of Topeka; one daughter, Cindy Siemers and husband, Tom, of Topeka; one daughter-in-law, Sandy Wade, of Ellis; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Bill Wade. Her body was donated to KU Medical Center. A memorial service will take place at a later date. RUSSELL - Roosevelt B. 'Rosie' Henderson, Jr., 69, died June 22 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays. He was born Jan. 16, 1937, in Mansfield, La., the son of Roosevelt, Sr. and Bessie Mae Colbert Henderson. He attended schools in Mansfield. He married Donna Sue Roberson on Oct. 20, 2005 in Russell. A resident of Russell, he worked in the concrete business. Survivors include his wife, Donna of the home; his children, Tyrone and Stacey Henderson of the home; Gregory Henderson of Russell, Roosevelt Tyree Henderson, Troy Henderson, Tracey Henderson, Tony Henderson, Lyria Henderson and Olivia Henderson, all of Moore, Okla.; his mother, Bessie Colbert of Las Vegas, Nev.; and numerous grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Lois Taylor and his father. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 1 at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell. Cremation has taken place. Bea Nairn, 82, of Great Bend died June 23 at the Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born May 12, 1924, in Larned, the daughter of Warren and Mae Foster Gilmore. She married Daryl L. Nairn on Nov. 23, 1963 at Pawnee Rock. He died March 31, 1992. She was a retired bookkeeper for the First National Bank in Great Bend retiring in 1972. She was a lifetime area resident. Mrs. Nairn was a member of the Christian Faith. Survivors include one son Curtis L. Nairn of Great Bend; one daughter Caryl Ward of Ellinwood; five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter Diane Mae Story. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Great Bend cemetery with the Rev. Don Paden officiating. Burial will be at the Great Bend cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today with family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m. at Bryant Funeral Home. HOISINGTON - Ruthetta L. Hursh, 81, died June 23 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center in Great Bend. She was born July 31, 1924, in Lacrosse the daughter of Chester H. and Ollie V. (Butler) Crotinger. She married Arthur H. Kreie on June 14, 1950 at Sharon Springs. He preceded her in death on July 23, 1954. She married Samuel L. Hursh on April 7, 1969 at Bison. He preceded her in death on April 7, 1986. She was a long time resident of Hoisington coming from Lincoln, Neb. She worked for Miller-Paine, was a retired kitchen aid for the Lincoln General Hospital in Lincoln, and was a caregiver to children in their home. Mrs. Hursh was a member of the Salvation Army, Life member of DAVA #7, National Order of Alley Cats #334, American Legion Auxiliary #342, all of Lincoln, and was a 50 year member of Silver Leaf #464 in Hutchinson. Survivors include one brother Ned Crotinger of Alexandria, Ind.; two sisters Beth Schneider and Fern Axman both of Great Bend; eight stepchildren; ten step grandchildren; eight step great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington with the Rev. Ultan Murphy presiding. Burial will be at Locust Hills cemetery, Rush Center. Visitation will be from 9 a.m to 8 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. until service time on Tuesday at the funeral home. HOISINGTON - Karen Meyeres Thompson Yeager, 59, died June 20 at Mercy Health Center at Manhattan. She was born Jan. 29, 1947, at Hoisington, the daughter of Leo C. Meyeres and Felicitas (Ohnmacht) Meyeres. She married Benny Thompson May 10, 1970, at Hoisington. They were divorced. She later married Craig A. Yeager in February 1996 at Las Vegas, Nev. Karen was the former co-owner of the Trend Setter in Hoisington and The Hair Company at Joplin, Mo. She graduated from Mount St. Scholastica Academy in Atchison. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary of Hoisington. A longtime resident of Hoisington, she had lived in Joplin, Mo., and Wamego. Survivors include her husband, Craig A. Yeager of the home; one son, Lennie Thompson and wife Lynae of Hoisington; one brother, Francis (Joe) Meyeres and wife Monica of Olathe; sisters, LaRae Connor, Lee's Summit, Mo., Mary Balderston and husband John of Beaver; Leonella (Nelli) Gilkey and husband, David of Garfield, and Barbara Urban and husband, Thomas of Hoisington; grandchildren, Brenna and Blake Thompson; and father and mother-in-law, Charles and Sondra Yeager of Omaha, Neb Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington, with Father Ultan Murphy officiating. ULYSSES - Verrill Emit Vanaman, 65, died June 20 at Stanton County Long Term Care Unit in Johnson. He was born Feb. 9, 1941, at Shirley, Ark., the son of Ernest and Julia (Matel) Vanaman. He married Dorothy May Lohr in 1967. She died in 1987. A resident of Ulysses since the early 1970's coming from Great Bend, he owned and operated Vanaman Heating and Air conditioning and Plumbing until 1987. Survivors include two sons, Darrell Vanaman of Denver, Colo., and Daniel Vanaman of Honolulu, Hawaii; three brothers, Tony Vanaman of Sarasota, Fla., Jimmy Vanaman of Rogersville, Mo., and Bobby Vanaman of Springfield, Mo.; and one sister, Jeannetta Kirkhart. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest Vanaman and Dolavern Vanaman; and one sister, Julia Shaklee. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Church of God in Ulysses with the Rev.
