Donald E. Anderson in San Francisco. He died March 11, 1999. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Michael Patrick Anderson; brothers, Nick May, Cy May and Larry May; and sisters, Sister Angelica May, Florence (May) Rupp and Inez (May) Jacobs. Harold L. Becker, 90, died June 15 at his residence in Great Bend. He was born June 19, 1915 in rural Great Bend, the son of Lewis L. and Ellen Howard Becker. He married
Lois Gilbert on June 14, 1936 at Pawnee Rock. She survives. A lifetime resident of Barton County, he was founder of Becker Tire and Treading, Inc. Becker was a member of First United Methodist Church and Elks Club both of Great Bend. He was a member of the National Tire Dealers and Retreaders Association where he served on the executive board for many years. Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Lois of the home; one son Wayne Becker and wife Karen of Great Bend; three daughters, Linda Sisson of Great Bend, Jean Radke and husband Ron of Great Bend, and Ann Engel and husband Al of McPherson; one brother, Larry L. Becker and wife Joy of Papillion, Neb.; nine grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Elmer Becker; son-in-law, Larry Sisson; one granddaughter, Pam Sisson Schenk, and a great-grandson Aaron Sisson. Carol Hipp on April 20, 1963, at Odin. A longtime resident of rural Claflin and Odin area, he was a farmer and stockman. Lamatsch was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Odin, and a 4th degree member of the Odin Knights of Columbus Council #2630 and trustee of the Cleveland Township and also served in the Army National Guard. Survivors include his wife, Carol Lamatsch of Claflin; five sons, David Lamatsch, Greg Lamatsch, and John Paul Lamatsch, all of Odin, Robert Lamatsch of Pratt, and Matt Lamatsch of Beloit; four daughters, Kathy Vopat of Great Bend, Patti Lane of Hays, Debbie Schindler of Paola, and Vicki Manke of Scott City; three sisters, Lou Ann Morgenstern of Hoisington, Doris Ross of Wichita, and Mary Davenport of Manhattan; and 17 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, James Lamatsch; and one granddaughter, Elizabeth Mayorga. Lee S. Nicholson on August 3, 1927, at Richards, Mo. He preceded in her death Dec. 20, 1976. She was an elementary school teacher from USD #431, retiring in 1972. She was a Hoisington resident since 1948 coming from Nevada, Missouri. Mrs. Nicholson was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Charter member P.E.O. Chapter GG, Sunday school teacher, Library board, Civic Club and Alturian Club all of Hoisington. Also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a 1961 graduate of Fort Hays State University. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lillian Kay Nicholson, sister Maxine Potter Maxwell and Granddaughter, Becky Nicholson. Daniel Boone Sutton on July 3, 1940, at Pawnee, Okla. He died Dec. 9, 1988. She was the retired owner of Dorothy's Beauty Shop. Mrs. Sutton was a member of the First United Methodist Church, past matron of the UNA Chapter #119 Order of the Eastern Star, past president of Business Professional Women and member of the Heritage Club, all of Hoisington. Survivors include two sons, Jerry Sutton of Hoisington, and Jonny Sutton of Flower Mound, Texas; two daughters Judy Sandritter of Hoisington, and Janie Reichuber of Wichita; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Carla Phillips on Dec. 9, 1973, at Russell. He was the Chief of Police of Holyrood. He was formerly employed by the Ellsworth County Sheriff's office and Beloit Police Department, and former sheriff of Russell County. Batt was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Holyrood where he served on the Church Council on the building and grounds committee. He was a former member of Zion Lutheran Church in Beloit where he also served on the Church Council on the building and grounds committee. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Tim Batt of Bushton; one daughter Laurie Ann McQuade of Victoria; his mother, Alice Batt of Russell County; two brothers, Dale Batt of Russell County, Eugene Batt of Hoisington; two grandchildren; one step-granddaughter. HAYS - Verne 'Lynn' Schmitt, 59, died June 12 at Hays Good Samaritan Center in Hays. He was born Nov. 30, 1946, at Great Bend, the son of Verne G. and Nelle Aline Austin Schmitt. He was a graduate of Great Bend High School, Kansas School of Barber in Kansas City and a diesel mechanics school in Kansas City. He was a diesel mechanic for Dowell Chemical from 1969 through 1987. He had been a Hays resident for three years, coming from Great Bend. Schmitt was of the Methodist faith and was a lifetime member of the American Legion Argonne Post No. 180 in Great Bend. Survivors include three sons, B.J. Schmitt and Eric Schmitt, both of Hays, and Ty Schmitt of Fayetteville, Ark.; two daughters, Monnie Schmitt of Hays and Kalli Schmitt of Louisburg; one brother, Robert Schmitt of Mission; and four grandchildren. Mr. Petz was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Ellinwood. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving with the 119th Infantry in the European Theater.
