Mary Juanita Austin, 89, beloved mother and grandmother, was born March 13, 1917 in Red Oak, Okla., the third child of Delbert Porter Whiteside and Effie Rebecca (Booth) Whiteside. She was a retired seamstress who worked many years at St. Joseph Medical Center in Wichita. She joined our Lord and Savior on Thursday, June 8, after suffering a stroke several weeks earlier. Mary was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church and attended faithfully until her health declined. Most recently, she was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Great Bend. She is survived by her two sons and their wives; Harry and Carolyn Austin of Kansas City, and Gary and Audrey Austin of Great Bend; four grandchildren; Carrie (Austin) Arganbright, and Brian, Anne and Kelsey Austin; a sister; Robbie Jean Dunlap of Sand Springs, Okla.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Ernest Austin; her brother J. R. Whiteside; and sister Leah Pickle. Services were Saturday at Lakeview Funeral Home Chapel. Juanita A. Brack
1915 - 2006
OTIS - Juanita A. Brack, 91, died June 8 at Rush County Memorial Hospital in La Crosse. She was born April 11, 1915, in rural Otis, the daughter of Peter P. Brack and Emma (Hergart) Brack. She married Herman K. Brack on Feb. 27, 1938, in Otis. He died March 23, 2002. A lifelong resident of Otis, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Brack was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and Women of Trinity, both of Otis. Survivors include two nephews, Leon Brack of Iola, and Harry Schneider of Otis; and four nieces, Shirley Remmert of San Antonio, Texas, Wilma Marshall of Russell, Ann Robertson of Thornville, Ohio, and Marsha Gullickson of Bloomington, Minn. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and three brothers, Roy E. Brack, Clifford G. Brack, and Verrel Brack. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Otis with Rev. Bruce Adamson officiating. Burial will be at Otis Lutheran cemetery. Visitation will be today from 1 to 8 p.m. at Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse with the family receiving friends from 6 to 7 p.m., and Monday from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. at the church. L. Keith Phillips

CHANUTE - L. Keith Phillips, 57, rural Chanute, passed away June 8 at his home. Keith was born in Russell, the son of Lloy Phillips and Lawanda (Batman) Phillips. He graduated high school in 1967 and worked as a bartender for over 30 years at the Quarry Stone Country Club in Chanute. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He married Pamela Hammans Johnson in Chanute, on April 15, 1989. He attended First Christian Church and enjoyed hiking, his dogs and family vacations to Florida. He is survived by his wife of the home; mother, LaWanda Farrell, Sierra Vista, Ariz.; sons, Jeremy Johnson, of Nevada, Mo., Jason Johnson and wife Carrie of Pittsburg; daughters Dr. Crystal Phillips Hill and her husband Sam, of Emporia, Jerica Essig and husband John Ray of Fort Sill, Okla., and Amy Johnson of Chanute; one brother, Lonnie Phillips and his wife Carla, of Globe, Ariz. and one sister, Angie Mosiej and her husband Brandon, also of Arizona; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father. Memorial service will be 2 p.m., Monday at First Christian Church in Chanute. Inurnment will be at a later date. Leonora E. Donovan
1909 - 2006
HOISINGTON - Lenora E. Donovan, 96, died June 8 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. She was born Sept. 4, 1909, in Russell County, the daughter of Denver Newton Cromwell and Ettie E. 'Stephenson' Cromwell. She married Jerome 'Jerry' Donovan on Oct. 18, 1931, at Hoisington. He preceded her in death on May 24, 1988. She was a homemaker and worked with her husband on the Donovan family farm. She was a longtime resident of rural Hoisington. She was an active member of the Vine United Methodist Church from age 16 until it closed, at which time she transferred her membership to the First United Methodist Church. (both of Hoisington). She was a Sunday School teacher and served the Vine Church for over 70 years. She was a member of the Women's Missionary Society, RSVP and served Friendship Meals for over 10 years. She also was involved with reading to second graders in USD #431 for several years. Survivors include one son, Gerald D. and wife, Donna Donovan of Hoisington; one daughter, Delora M. Donovan of Wichita; one son-in-law, Edson Merlau of Hoisington; three sisters-in-law, Marion Keller of Oakley, Mary Hazel Donovan Hoffman of Great Bend, and Esther Cromwell of Hoisington; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her canine friend, Buffy, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Marvin Lee Donovan; a daughter, Melva Jean Merlau; four brothers, Myrl, Ira, Oscar and Ray Cromwell; two sisters, Alpha Morrison and Alice Donovan Graham and a great-grandson, Ryan Merlau. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Hoisington with Rev. Wayne Flanders officiating. Burial will be at the Hoisington cemetery. Irene C. McGaughey

HUTCHINSON - Irene C. McGaughey, 90, died June 6 at the Wesley Tower's Hester Care Center in Hutchinson. She was born Jan. 18, 1916, in Ness County, the daughter of Henry Michael and Mary Helena Weirman McGaughey. She was a graduate of McCracken High School. She had been a bookkeeper for the McCracken Telephone Co. for five years, Pegues for 10 years, and Carey Salt for 28 years. Mrs. McGaughey was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Alter Society and served as a sacristy minister for 16 years. Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Martin, Lester, Francis, Chester, and Eugene; and three sisters, Pearl McGaughey, Ethel Smith, and Ruth McGaughey. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home in Hutchinson. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Hutchinson will the Rev. Stuart Smeltzer officiating. Betty Painter
1928 - 2006
WAUNAKEE, Wis. - Betty Painter died in the comfort of her own home on Friday, May 26, 2006. Betty was born in Vernice, Calif., in 1928. Betty married Richard S. Painter in l950 and their 56 years together took them to Great Bend, Kan.; Mankato, Minn.; Topeka, Kan.; Morris, Minn.; Sedona, Ariz.; and Madison, Wis. While living in Great Bend in the early 1960's Betty became one of the first women in broadcasting to host her own radio program. With the move to Mankato in l969, Betty's 'Coffee Talk' on KYSM-AM became a cornerstone of the community. Her warm, relaxed style charmed the likes of Hubert H. Humphrey, Hank Aaron and a long list of local and national newsmakers. Betty's 15 years on-the-air left a legacy that is remembered still. Betty is loved, missed and remembered by her devoted husband, Dick; her daughter Diane; her sons Chris, wife Denise and grandchildren Lindsey and Zachary; Greg, Rick, wife Linda; and her Aunt Jeanne. Despite her daily struggle with emphysema and dementia Betty's inquisitive nature, sense of humor and generous spirit were present to the end. Everyone's needs came before hers. Carol Ann Heim

Carol Ann Heim, 59, of Great Bend died June 6 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born Sept. 15, 1946, in Colby, the daughter of Roy and Jeane Carr Searls. She married Fred Heim April of 1990 in Great Bend. He survives. She worked for CPI Qualified Plan Consultants Inc. in pension administration. She was a resident of Great Bend after coming from Atwood in 1979. Mrs. Heim was a member of the First Church of God in Great Bend. Survivors include her husband, parents, one son Tim Laurent of Lawrence; one daughter, Sharie Laurent of Wichita; one step-daughter Tina Heim of Fort Riley; two brothers, Dan Searls of Ponca City, Okla., and Kenny Searls of Quinter; sister Debby Sandoval of Wichita; two grandchildren Macie Laurent and Jonathan James Heim. She was preceded in death an infant daughter. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Tom Swain presiding. Interment will be at 3 p.m. at the Russell cemetery in Russell. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to the Carol A. Virginia K. Shearrer

Virginia K. Shearrer, 63, died June 5 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita. She was born Jan. 11, 1943 in Larned, the daughter of Raymond and Margaret Wagaman Swartz. She married Charles 'Leon' Shearrer in Larned on June 10, 1962. He survives. She was a resident of Larned for 45 years after moving from Macksville. She was the EMS director for the city of Larned. Mrs. Shearrer was a member of the First Christian Church of Larned. Survivors include three daughters Rebecca Knauf of Rozel, Jennifer Eakin, and Stacy Shearrer both of Lawrence; four brothers J.R. Swartz, Ron Swartz, Bob Swartz of California, and Richard Swartz of Springdale, Ark.; two sisters Carolyn Hunt of Larned, Betty Hood of Great Bend and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother Billy Swartz. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned with the Revs. Dan Lundgren and Jack Hopkins presiding. Burial will be at the Larned cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary. PAYSON, Ariz. - Hanna L. Scott, 95, Payson, Arizona, died Tuesday, May 30 in Payson, Arizona. She was born Sept. 15, 1910, in Otis, Rush County, Kan., the daughter of Henry S. and Anna Marie (Scheuerman) Ochs. She was a longtime resident of La Crosse and had lived in Arizona since 1990. She was a member of United Methodist Church in La Crosse. On Jan. 6, 1938, she married H.E. (Scotty) Scott in La Crosse. She was a life-long wife, mother and homemaker. Survivors include one son, Charles W. Scott and his wife Boonnom of San Antonio, Texas; one daughter, Marla Niedens and her husband Leonard of Payson, Ariz.; one brother, Milton Ochs of Ransom, Kans.; seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband on June 17, 1982; two children, five sisters and four brothers. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m Thursday, June 8, at the United Methodist Church in La Crosse. The Rev. Marilyn Christmore will officiate. Inurnment will be in La Crosse City cemetery. HAVEN - H. Leland Wiebe, 75, died June 4 at Hutchinson Hospital in Hutchinson. He was born Sept. 18, 1930, at Haven, the son of Henry John and Edna Clara Schlickau Wiebe. He married Anna Lee Fishburn on Nov. 30, 1952, at Haven. A lifetime resident of the Haven area, he was the owner of Wiebe's Wood-N-Things and retired from Cessna/Eaton Mfg. Corporation in 1991. Wiebe was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Haven, where he served as a trustee, and on the School Board and cemetery Board, Charter member of the Devil's Ditch Renegade Black Powder Club and Master Instructor for Hunter Safety. Survivors include his wife Anna; two sons, Duane Wiebe of Haven, and Mike Wiebe of Emporia; one daughter, Cindy Nech of Larned; six grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Wayne Wiebe and one great-granddaughter, Tracy Nall. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Daniel Galchutt officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery. GREENSBURG '“ Mary Ruth Andress, 70, died Monday, June 5, 2006, in Wichita, Kan. She was born Jan. 20, 1936, in Pratt, Kan., the daughter of Ralph Sylvester and Bernice Cork Mitchell Truex. She graduated from Great Bend High School in 1954 and attended the College of Emporia. She lived in Great Bend and Greensburg since 1964. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Sorella Club, the Order of Eastern Star, Star of Hope #193, the First United Methodist Church, and the Bell Choir, all of Greensburg. She was also a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader. She married Charles Andress on July 26, 1959, in Great Bend, Kan. He survives. Other survivors include one son, John Andress and wife, Rita of Great Bend; one sister, Jean Dringmann, Great Bend, and three nieces. There will be graveside services at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 8, 2006, at the Great Bend cemetery, with the Rev. Hal Staats presiding. A memorial service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Greensburg. There will be a time of fellowship with the family afterwards. Frances Mary Koett, 93, of Great Bend died June 1 at the Central Kansas medical Center in Great Bend. She was born Jan. 29, 1913, in Kinsley, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Hahn Schmitt. She married Lawrence Koett on April 16, 1940, in Kinsley. He preceded her in death on May 31, 1978. She was a homemaker and resident of Great Bend coming from Larned in 1987. Mrs. Koett was a member of the Catholic Community of Great Bend at St. Patrick, Altar Society and Daughters of Isabella. Survivors include two sons, Larry Koett of Owensboro, Ky., Ron Koett of Bradentown, Fla.; three daughters, Marilyn and husband Harold Hammerschmidt of Littleton Colo., Dolores McConnaughy, of Great Bend, and Imelda Koett of Olney Md.; nine grandchildren Ken, Bobbie Gretchen, Kevin, Brian, Nicki, Suzzane, Deanna and Chris; eight great-grandchildren Ethan, Tyler, Karis, Ashley, Tyler, Katelyn, Gaven, and Emma. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Joe, Austin, and Robert Schmitt, and two sisters Florence Solomon and Marcella Koett, and a grandson Scott Koett. Altar Society Rosary will be at 4 p.m. today with vigil service at 7 p.m. both at Bryant Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Cloyd Peterson

Cloyd Peterson, 85, of Great Bend died June 3 at the Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born Sept. 15, 1920, at Hoxie, the son of Louis and Clair Pittaway Peterson. He was a retired maintenance supervisor for the J.C. Penney Company, and resident of Great Bend since moving from Salina in 1962. He married Dorothy Warta on June 16, 1944, in Salina. She survives. Mr. Peterson was a member of the First Untied Methodist Church in Great Bend, and a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II landing on Normandy Beach and receiving the Purple Heart. Survivors include his wife, three sons Lugene 'Gene' Peterson of Salina, Doug Peterson of Wichita, and Warren Peterson of Great Bend; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers Gene, Pete, and John Peterson; and two sisters Edith Brady and Lillian Cole. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend with the Rev Gary Brooks presiding. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. at the Brookville City cemetery, Brookville, with Military Rites conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday. ARKANSAS CITY - John Steven Frickey, 57, died May 29 at his home in Arkansas City. He was born Nov. 23, 1948, in McCook, Neb., the son of John Harold and Fiona E. (Davis) Frickey. He attended the Oberlin elementary schools and graduated from McPherson High School. He attended McPherson College and Brown Mackie College in Salina. He married Carol Ann Baker on Nov. 4, 1972, at McPherson. He worked as a truck driver for Groendyke Transport Company, Inc. in McPherson, worked for Kingsport Regional Medical Center as the Manager of Technical Support in Kingsport, Tenn., and worked for the City of Nashville in computer management in Nashville, Tenn. He had been a resident of Arkansas City since February, coming from McPherson. Frickey was a member of Cherry Street Church of God in McPherson; and Moose Lodge of Hutchinson and Kingsport, Tenn. Survivors include his wife, Carol; one son, Justin John Frickey of Fort Benning, Ga.; one daughter Jenny J. Frickey of Moundridge; one brother, James Frickey of McPherson; one sister, Judy Shean of Hutchinson; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Marilyn Mines. Funeral will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Glidden-Ediger Chapel in McPherson with the Revs. Chuck and Andrea Baker officiating. Burial will be at the Oberlin City cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m Sunday, with the family present from 3 to 5 p.m. at the chapel. Memorials are suggested to the John Frickey Memorial Fund in care of the funeral home.
