GARFIELD - Harold Dean Stude, 80, died Aug. 20 at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City. He was born Aug. 28, 1925, at Garfield, the son of Fred and Lena Blume Stude. He married
Rose Marie Skiff on Aug. 18, 1949, at Denver, Colo. A longtime resident of Garfield, he was a farmer and stockman. Stude was a member of the United Methodist Church, Tony Asher American Legion Post No. 300, past Lion Club, past Garfield School Board and past Orange Township Board, all of Garfield. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Survivors include his wife, of the home; one son Michael of Garfield; one brother Melburn of Garfield; two grandsons, Nathan of Larned and Tyrone of Chicago, Ill.; and two great-grandaughters. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and Herman. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Garfield with Pastor Ken Walker presiding. GREAT BEND - Jay R. Preston, 43, of Great Bend, died Aug. 20 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born Oct. 6, 1962, in Lawrence, the son of Dr. Richard C. and Marilyn K. Ordway Preston. He graduated from Great Bend High School in 1980 and later graduated from Dodge City Community College. He attended the University of Kansas and transferred to Fort Hays State University. He married
Celesa Hawthorne on Sept. 18, 1993, in Great Bend. A resident of Great Bend since 1977, coming from Westpoint, N.Y., he was a truck driver for Logex in Great Bend. Preston was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Great Bend. Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons, Jordan and Jesse, both of the home; one daughter, Jaiden, of the home; one step-son, Timothy Schroeder of Great Bend; his parents, of Great Bend; and two sisters, Amy Guthrie of Stillwater, Okla., and Anne Paden of Great Bend. GREAT BEND - Eleanor V. Revell, 89, of Great Bend, died Aug. 21 at Sandstone Nursing Center in Little River. She was born May 21, 1917, at Cherokee, Okla., the daughter of Elsie Stout and Roy L. Mullinix. She married
Roy W. Revell on Aug. 5, 1934, in Oklahoma City, Okla. He died Jan. 22, 2000. A Great Bend resident for most of her life, she was a homemaker. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law Rae Vivian and Gordon Zahradnik, Lyons; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Wilson City cemetery in Wilson, with the Rev. Dick Ogle officiating. COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Christopher Michael Clark, 38, was tragically taken from his family and friends when his motorcycle was hit by a suspected drunk driver just before midnight on Friday, Aug. 4, at the intersection of Bijou Street and Union Boulevard. Christopher joined his soul mate, Heather Hope Clark, at 12:15 a.m. on Aug. 5. Chris was born on Sept. 4, 1967, in San Diego, Calif., and was a resident of Colorado Springs, Colo., since 1981. He recently became a welcomed member of local motorcycle enthusiasts with the purchase of his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Chris is survived by his mother Barbara (Bobbi) Clark of Great Bend, his grandmother Betty Bangerter of Great Bend, his stepsons Christopher Edward Smith and Austin Robert Smith of Colorado Springs, and his Uncle George Clark of Auburn, Wash. He was preceded in death by his wife Heather Hope Clark, his father Joseph Clark, his sister Kathleen Ann Clark, his paternal grandparents Alfred and Anne Clark, his uncle Father John Clark and his maternal grandfather Howard Bangerter. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at St. Johns Episcopal Church, 17th and Adams, Great Bend.

Mrs. Gearhart attended the Hoisington Bible Church in Hoisington. Jess T. Mize Jr. on March 12, 1943, at Denver, Colo. He died July 31, 2003. A resident of Holyrood since 1950, recently moving to Great Bend, she was a medical aide at Good Samaritan Retirement Center. Mrs. Mize was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Ladies Aide and American Legion Auxiliary, all of Holyrood. Survivors include two daughters, Lila M. Sohn and Zella Blanche Miz e, both of Great Bend; a sister, Madeline Tipton, Oklahoma City, Okla.; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. RANSOM - Milton L. Ochs, 85, died Aug. 17 at Kiowa County Memorial Hospital in Greensburg. He was born June 17, 1921, at Otis, the son of Henry S. and Anna Marie (Scheuerman) Ochs. He married
Verda Bauer on Aug. 16, 1968, at Ransom. They later divorced. A lifelong resident of Rush and Ness counties, he was a motor grader operator for the Ness County Road Department before his retirement. Ochs was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Trego Center, and former member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Otis. Survivors include one stepson, Douglas Gish, of Arnold; one stepdaughter, Debra Adkins, of Dighton; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two step-grandchildren, Matthew Adkins and Faydawn Adkins; four brothers, Ted Ochs, Solomon Ochs, Edwin Ochs and Rueben Ochs; and six sisters, Bertha Goerlitz, Martha Scott, Hanna Scott, Nima Steinert, Elnora Ruff and Olinda Steinert. YUKON, Okla. - William A. Bartholomew, 80, passed away Aug. 13 at his home in Yukon, Okla., surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Great Bend on July 3, 1926, the son of the late Frank William and Mary Vianna (Fisher) Bartholomew. He married
Lois Back on Easter Sunday on April 6, 1947, in Great Bend, sharing over 59 wonderful years of marriage. A graduate of Great Bend High School, he later was a school board member, 4-H leader and was very active in the Future Farmers of America. A devoted farmer, he was awarded the Outstanding Young Farmer Award in 1959. Upon moving to Oklahoma in 1967, Bill became a Realtor and was a member of the Board of Realtors. Bill was a member of the United Methodist Church of the Good Shepherd in Yukon and loved gardening, fishing and traveling. Survivors include his wife Lois, of the home in Yukon; two sons, Bill Bartholomew and John Bartholomew and wife Peggy, both of Yukon; one daughter, Sharon Petersen and husband Scott of Yukon; 10 grandchildren, Kelsey Roberts and husband Greg, Dack Thomas and wife Selena, Kerri Newcomb, Ryan Bartholomew and wife Randi, Brian Pardew, Mandi Riley, Ivory Petersen, Jason Moen, Chad Petersen and Presten Petersen and wife Casey; and 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence Bartholomew and Earl Bartholomew; one sister, Bettie Deemer; and son-in-law, Gary Thomas. Dr. Terryl 'Terry' Keith Schmitt, 62, of Great Bend, died Aug. 17 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born Sept. 18, 1943, at Liberal, the son of Edward Charles and Gladys Grace (Reidnour) Schmitt. He married
Jeanne Muret on May 30, 1969, at Manhattan. He graduated from Liberal High School and Kansas State University, with a doctorate degree in veterinary medicine. He was formerly a veterinarian at the Hoisington Veterinary Hospital and a partner in the Ark Valley Veterinary Hospital in Great Bend. He was a resident of Hoisington from 1969 until moving to Great Bend in 1978. Schmitt was a member of First United Methodist Church, and served on the board of trustees and as chairman of the board of administration; a former member of Vine United Methodist; and a member of Kiwanis, 4-H and FFA, all of Hoisington. He was also a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Kansas Veterinary Association, KSU Alumni Association and was a judge for the Pony of America Association. Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons, Allen Schmitt of Manhattan and Jason Schmitt of Warsaw, Poland; mother Gladys Schmitt, Liberal; two brothers, Dennis Schmitt and Lynn Schmitt, both of Liberal; a sister, Janet Schmitt of Liberal, and a granddaughter, Caitlin Schmitt. He was preceded in death by his father, Edward C. Schmitt; a brother, Larry Schmitt; and a sister, Betty Schmitt. RUSSELL - Lori Deanne Kilian, 42, died Aug. 16 at San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center in Alamosa, Colo. She was born Oct. 19, 1963, in Russell, the daughter of Dennis H. Kilian and Anita G. (Glick) Kilian-Driscoll. She graduated from Russell High School and attended Fort Hays State University, where she received a bachelor's degree in nursing. After graduation she moved to Wichita, where she worked as a high risk labor and delivery nurse. She moved back to Russell in 2004. Survivors include one son, Joey Aramburu of Wichita; five daughters, Kiera Hogan of Haysville, Aftan Hogan of Russell, Heidi Hogan and McKenzie Hogan, both of Valley Center, and Lexy Aramburu of Wichita; her father Dennis H. Kilian, mother Anita G. COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Frances Marie Habiger, 73, died Aug. 10 at her home in Colorado Springs of heat failure. She was born April 26, 1933, in Portsmith, Ohio, the daughter of William and Miriam Spicer Chapman. She married
George F. Habiger on April 17, 1971, in Redwood City, Calif. He died Dec. 26, 1996. She graduated from St. Mary of the Valley High School in 1952 and from Marylhurst College in Oregon. She joined the St. Mary of the Valley convent as Sister Mary Gregory until she resigned in 1961. She was a school teacher for the Department of Defense, teaching children on the Air Force Bases in Japan, France and Germany. Mrs. Habiger was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Colorado Springs, the National Education Association, the American Association of University Women and the Alzheimer's Steering Committee of Colorado Springs. Survivors include one daughter Mary Jane Duncan, and four grandchildren, Alastair, Danika, Clara and William, all of Sequim, Wash. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert L. Chapman and Willliam R. Chapman, and two sisters, Dorothy Geppert and Eileen Hexem. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Aug. 26, at Pauline Chapel, 2 Park Ave., Colorado Springs, with Father James Roth officiating. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. on Aug. 24 at Lyons Municipal cemetery. She will be buried beside her husband. SPEARVILLE - Reverend Father Dennis L. Reed, 64, died Aug. 16 at the Catholic Care Center in Wichita. He was born on Nov. 11, 1941, in Hardtner, the son of George Franklin and Laura Margaret (Bell) Reed. Following studies at Conception Seminary, he was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Dodge City by the Most Reverend Marion F. Forst on June 7, 1969. He was assistant pastor at St. Rose in Great Bend, Sacred Heart Cathedral in Dodge City, St. Bernadette in Kansas City, Mo., and Coronation of Our Lady in Grand View, Mo. He was pastor of St. John the Apostle, St. John with St. Francis Xavier in Seward; Sacred Heart in Ness City; St. Nicholas in Kinsley with Sts. Peter and Paul, North Kinsley, St. Mary's in Hodgeman County, and St. George in Bucklin; St. Dominic in Garden City with St. Stanislaus in Ingalls; Sacred Heart of Jesus in Larned with St. Bernard in Belpre; and St. John the Baptist in Spearville with St. Lawrence in Jetmore and St. Anthony in Hansten. During his priesthood he also served the diocese on the Liturgy Commission, Diocesan Personnel Board, Diocesan School Board, Presbyteral Council as a Consultor and the Priests Trust Fund Board. While on sabbatical studies in Rome he was received in audience by Pope John Paul II. While his greatest joys were the priestly ministry, family and friends, he was a reader of history, lover of the arts and traveled extensively. He was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Survivors include one brother, Gary L. Reed of Medicine Lodge; one niece, Tracy Schmidt and her husband Jeff of Ponder, Texas; two grand-nephews, one grand-niece and many other family members, including a special aunt, Mary Hommertzheim of Medicine Lodge. He was preceded in death by his parents; a nephew, Clint Alan Reed; a niece and a grand-nephew. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. on Sunday at St. John the Baptist Church in Spearville, with Father Ted Stoecklein presiding. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. on Monday at St. John the Baptist Church with Bishop Ronald Gilmore presiding. Cremation will follow with burial of ashes at St. Columba cemetery in Conception, Mo.
