IDAHO SPRINGS Colo. - David Lee DuBois, 47, died Aug. 3, of a heart attack in Idaho Springs Colo. DuBois was born on Oct. 2, 1958 in Great Bend, Kan. to Don and Mayme DuBois. DuBois lived in Great Bend and Santanta, Kan. during his childhood. DuBois then resided in Dodge City, Kan. from 1976-1980; Wichita, Kan. in 1981; Hope, Kan. from 1981-1982; Pocatella, Idaho from 1982-1983; Woodlin, Colo. from 1983-1984; Highland, Kan. from 1984-1986; Horton, Kan. from 19861989; Olsburg, Kan. from 1989-1990; Greensburg, Kan. from 1990-1991; Valley Falls, Kan. from 1991-1995; Idaho Springs, Colo. from 1995-1998; Almena, Kan. from 1998-2000; Jennings, Kan. from 2000-2002; Weskan, Kan. from 2002-2004, and Thousand Oaks, Calif. from 2004-2006. David graduated from Satanta High School in 1976, and went on to receive a bachelor's degree in secondary education from St. Mary's of the Plains College in Dodge City. DuBois later received a masters degree in administration from Fort Hays State University, and was working toward a doctorate in education at Kansas State University. He worked as a teacher, administrator and coach. He was recently hired as the Chief of Staff for the Center for Civic Education. DuBois married
Tami Rae Zordel on March 25, 1982 in Herrington, Kan. They were blessed with three children. He enjoyed his children and granddaughters, coaching football, watching sports, fishing, and entertaining with friends. DuBois is survived by his wife, Tami Rae DuBois; his parents, Don and Mayme DuBois; sons, Wes (Ann) DuBois and Clay DuBois, both of Salina, Kan.; a daughter, Whitney DuBois and her fiancé, Blake Fischer of Salina; mother-in-law, Esther Zordel of Dodge City, Kan.; sister, Diane (Dennis) Fillpot of Jacksonville, N.C.; brother, Dan DuBois of Wichita; brothers-in-law, Allen Zordel of Topeka, Kan., and Michael Zordel of Idaho Springs, one sister-in-law, Julie Zordel of Dodge City; two grandchildren, Abigail and Madison; six nieces and four nephews. Betty Ann Marie Malek, 55, of Great Bend died Aug. 6, at her home. She was born January 6, 1951 in Wagner S.D. the daughter of Andrew and Lilly Mary (Kokesh) Rauscher. She married
Edward J. Malek Feb. 14, 1986 in Kirwin. She was a resident of Great Bend. Survivors include two sons, Jeff Rauscher of Luray, and Kevin Malek of Victoria; two daughters, Debra K. Contreras of Dodge City, and Stacie R. Vonfrieling of Great Bend; mother Lilly M. Rauscher; three brothers, Gary Rauscher, Big Stone, S. D., Vern Rauscher of Juno, Alaska, and Tom Rauscher of Denison Iowa; one sister Carol Cullens of Hinton, Iowa, and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant sister Mary Rauscher, and her father Andrew Rauscher. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, at the First Church of the Nazarene with Rev. MCPHERSON - Hazel E. Schroeder, 85, died Aug. 8, at Infinia Health Center, McPherson. She was born June 13, 1921 in Panora, Iowa, the daughter of Herbert W. Jestice and Leota A. Bryun. She married
William M. Tom Embrey, later divorced. She then married
Lawrence J. Schroeder on Nov. 14, 1987 in McPherson. He died on Dec. 11, 1990. She was a retired nurse's aid working at a hospital in Perry, Iowa, and at the Veteran's Hospital in Des Moines, and in the kitchen of the McPherson Senior Center. She was a resident of McPherson since 1979, coming from Woodward Iowa. Mrs. Schroeder was member of the First Christian Church, and McPherson Senior Center Kichenette Band. Survivors include five sons, Lewis Embrey of Claflin, James Embrey of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Tom Embrey and John Embrey both of McPherson, and Jerald Embrey of Des Moines, three daughters, Margaret Dailey of Gilmore City, Iowa, Marilyn Hysell of Las Vegas, Nev., and Caroline Poindexter of Madrid Iowa; and brother Wayne Jestice of St. Joseph, Mo., 20 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter Mary Upchurch, step-sons Robert, Jack, and Richard Embrey, granddaughter Annette Embrey, grandson Edward Vaughn, great-granddaughters, Jessica Marie Ivy and Jill Dailey, two sisters, Mildred Pauline Brown and Opal Scheiman, and daughter-in-law Sue Embrey. RUSSELL -Gail Wayne Campbell, 80, died Aug., 4 at the Wheatland Nursing Home in Russell after a longtime illness. He was born March 22, 1926 in Caney, the son of Edward Bruce and Alice Mae (Groomes) Campbell. He lived in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas, attending high school in Russell. He married
Wilma H. Barker on Oct. 7, 1944 in Wichita. She preceded him in death on Dec. 27, 2005. He worked as a derrick hand in the oil fields in Texas, Colorado, and Kansas., before selling insurance in Russell in 1956. In 1966 he was a surveyor for a mining company in New Mexico and Casper Wyoming. In 1977 he was the owner and operator of a service station in Los Lunas N. M. In 1987 he returned to Russell to manage the Country Lane Mobil Home Park until retiring in 1990. Mr. Campbell served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a charter member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors include five sons, Edward Campbell of Moriarty, N. M., Jack Campbell of Long Beach, Calif., Rick Campbell of Los Angeles, Calif., Mark Campbell of Bremerton, Wash., and Casey Campbell of Edgewood, N.M.; two daughters, Cheryl Voos of Russell and Julita Biles of Hoisington; four brothers, George Campbell of Texas, Jack and Tommy Campbell both of California, and Clyde Campbell of Ariz.; 14 grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by a brother Eugene Campbell, and a grandson Shawn Campbell. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the Russell City cemetery with the Rev. Earl Haggard presiding. Kenneth Morris Warner on Oct. 23, 1948, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in St. Louis, Mo. A resident of Great Bend since April 2006, coming from Smyrna, Ga., she was an accounting clerk and comptometer operator. Mrs. Warner was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Marrietta, Ga., and attended Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend. ST. JOHN - Robert 'Bob' Henry English, 93, died Aug. 5 at Hospice House in Hutchinson. He was born Feb. 10, 1913, at Macksville, the son of Joe G. and Myrtle Rixon English. He was a resident of St. John from 1939 to 1999, when he moved to Hutchinson. He graduated from Fort Collins High School, Fort Collins, Colo., and earned a bachelor's degree in business from the University of Kansas. He married
Carlene Holt on Nov. 13, 1936, at Wichita. She died Nov. 25, 1999. He was a retired St. John businessman. English was a genuine Bible believing Christian, a member of United Methodist Church, St. John; Trinity United Methodist Church, Hutchinson; former St. John City Councilman; former Unified School District 350 St. John-Hudson School Board member; former member and president of St. John Chamber of Commerce; Lions Club; Odd Fellows; and 32nd degree Mason. She was a Registered Nurse and resident of St. John from 1955 to 1993, of Pratt from 1993 to 1995, and of Topeka from 1995 to the present. She received a bachelor's degree in business administration in Germany, and a nurse's degree at Wesley School of Nursing in Wichita. She married
Ray Benintendi on Feb. 7, 1955, at Ulm, Germany. He died in 1993. Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Bassett, Topeka; four brothers, Fritz Scheck of Canada, and Adolf Scheck, Heiner Scheck and Karl Scheck, all of Germany; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Ronnie L. Boor on Jan. 4, 1984, in Reno, Nev. A resident of Great Bend since 1963, coming from Hoisington, he was a customer service technician for Southwestern Bell Co., retiring in 1997. Drees was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of Telephone Company Pioneers, Great Bend Kiwanis and Great Bend Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Catholic Community of Great Bend-St. Patrick Church, and a church usher. He was a member of Knights of Columbus & Faithful Comptroller of 4th Degree. He was a member of Boy Scouts of America, a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow and recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. Survivors include his wife, of the home; mother Bertha Drees of Hoisington; son Randy Drees, Sacramento, Calif.; two step-sons, Ryan C. HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Berneice Clarice Ashby, 75, of Huntsville, Ala., died July 30 in Huntsville Hospital. She was born April 6, 1931, in Hudson, the daughter of John and Ruth (Rice) Krentzel. She was a grandmother and a loving friend to all. Father Gerald A. Hammeke, 78, of Great Bend, died Aug. 3 at the Dominican Sisters Convent Infirmary in Great Bend. He was born Dec. 29, 1927, at Claflin, the son of Joseph M. and Mary Heinz Hammeke. Ordinated on May 3, 1952, he was the first priest ordinated for the Dodge City Diocese. He was assistant at the Sacred Heart Cathedral until 1956. He was pastor at St. Patrick Church in Plains from 1956-1962, at St. Joseph Church at Offerle and St. Nicholas Church at Kinsley from 1962-1965, at St. Bernard Church at Belpre from 1965-1968, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church at Dodge City from 1968-1974, at St. John the Evangelist Church in Hoisington from 1974-1980, at St. Patrick Church in Great Bend from 1980-1991, and at St. John the Baptist Church in Spearville from 1991 to retirement in 1997. Father Hammeke started the St. Patrick School Endowment Fund in Great Bend in 1985. He was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and was State Chaplain in 1981-1982. Survivors include a brother, Alfred Hammeke and wife Sue, of Claflin; a sister, Geraldine M. 'Jerry' Buehler, Great Bend; and 17 nieces and nephews. Pat Hershey

J. Patrick Hershey was born May 16, 1947, at Great Bend, the son of John and Marian Roth Hershey. He attended St. Joseph's Catholic School and graduated from Ellinwood Rural High School in the class of 1965. A member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity, he graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in commercial art in 1970. During the summer of 1971 he and his brother Jim backpacked around Europe and Asia. In 1972, Pat was employed in different aspects of the textile business and was pursuing opportunities in the areas of fabric importing and marketing, working for several textile importers. These job opportunities took him to Denver and several cities along the West Coast. Pat died on Aug. 24, 1985, at his brother Jim's home in Hawaii. A celebration of his life is planned for Saturday at Sts. Peter & Paul Church north of Ellinwood at 7 p.m. Music from Jonathan Larson's Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning Broadway musical 'Rent' will be incorporated into the celebration of Pat's life journey. The live music will feature vocalists from Ellinwood and Great Bend, including Fred and Murine Prosser, Hank Hayes, Kinnat Whelan, Matt Elliott, Sara Hayden, Lisa Ille, Phillip Berger, Jean Doll, Kelci Sieker and Sharon Sturgis. Pat was the step-son of Robert Southern. He is deceased. OVERLAND PARK - Richard H. Bartel, 70, of Overland Park, Kansas went to be with his Savior on Tuesday morning, Aug. 1, 2006. Visitation will be held at the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood from 7 to 8:30 Thursday evening. The celebration of Richard's live will continue with funeral services on Friday morning at 10 a.m. at the church. Mr. Richard H. Bartel was born in Lyons on March 10, 1936. Richard spent his childhood in Albert. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. He applied his degree in the aerospace, animal health and pharmaceutical industries until his retirement in 2002. During retirement, Richard dedicated his time to helping at his church, playing with grandchildren, fishing with friends and watching K-State football games. Richard will be missed until he is reunited with his wife of 48 years, Phyllis Bartel, and his children Rick, Rochelle, Randy and John. Grandpa will look forward to playing with his grandchildren Caleb, Emma, Ethan, Kaylee and Laine when they see him again in heaven.
