Marvin S. Finger Sr.
1924-2006
ROZEL - Marvin S. Finger Sr., 82, a veteran of World War II who served with Audie Murphy in the Battle of the Bulge and then returned to build a farm and a life of community service in his native Kansas, died Sept. 14 at St. Luke's Hospital, Kansas City, Mo., of complications from a stroke. He was born March 8, 1924, to Francis and Clara Demel Finger on a farm near Odin. He grew up north of Larned and graduated from Larned High School in 1944. He served in the Third Army, 15th Regiment, Company B, and his first day of combat in France was the same day Murphy, his company commander, earned the Medal of Honor. His unit later broke through the Siegfried Line, crossed the Rhine River and conducted operations behind enemy lines late in the war. Injured in combat, he was in a hospital on V-E Day. Upon his discharge from the military, Marvin came home to the family farm. He married Helen Pechanec of Timken on May 11, 1948, in a double wedding with his brother, Leonard, and Helen's cousin, Agnes Vondracek. Father Emil Kapaun performed the ceremony. Marvin and Helen built a home and farmstead along the Sawmill Creek in western Pawnee County. Marvin served as a 4-H community leader for more than 30 years and also was involved with Helen in prison ministry at the Larned State Correctional Facility. They raised eight children, and many of the youngsters who visited the farm came to be surrogate sons and daughters as well. A towering man of quiet strength with the gift of gab, Marvin never hesitated to assist people in need. When a hailstorm struck the area more than 20 years ago, for example, he flagged vehicles down on K-156 and guided them to the protection of his large pole barn until the storm passed. Last November, when he spotted a motorist stranded in the dark, he stopped to help. Helen cooked dinner for the college student trying to get home for Thanksgiving weekend and gave him a room for the night until Marvin could take him to town the next day for the needed parts.
