Nancy Ella Goetting Bertram, 72, died Oct. 12 at her home in Great Bend. She was born March 18, 1934, in Great Bend, the daughter of August and Ruby Gunn Goetting. She married
Carl A. Bertram on Jan. 1, 1954, in Great Bend. He died March 23, 1999. She was an inspiration to her husband Carl as he and his partner took over ownership of Sherman Machine Works. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, she was a homemaker and secretary for Marlette Homes Inc. and O'Neill Tank Company. Mrs. Bertram was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Petroleum Club, Ladies Golf Association, Zeta Gamma Chapter of ESA and Job's Daughters, all of Great Bend. Survivors include three daughters, Rebecca Anderson, Great Bend, Melissa 'Missy' Esfeld and her husband Bert of Great Bend, and Sarah Richley and her husband Craig of Kansas City, Mo.; two stepsons, Jerry Bertram of Haviland and Ted Bertram of Kansas City, Mo.; one sister, Janice German of Ponca City, Okla.; four grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; three great grandchildren and 11 step-great grandchildren. Mae R. Behrens, 97, of Great Bend, died Oct. 14 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born June 19, 1909, at Woodbine, the daughter of Charles and Daisy Staatz Aebi. She married
Orla F. Behrens Sr. on Jan. 16, 1927, at Pond Creek, Okla. he died March 11, 1988. She was a homemaker during the early years of her married
life, and later worked as a cook. She also packed parachutes during World War II. She and her husband lived in Oklahoma and Kansas during their marriage. Mrs. Behrens was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Great Bend, where she was a longtime Sunday school teacher and church worker. Survivors include a son, Orla 'Fred' Behrens Jr. and his wife Dorothy, of Great Bend; four grandchildren, Robert Behrens, Ross Behrens, Martha Countryman and Linda Giddings; 10 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Robert Eugene Behrens in 1929 at age 4 months, and James Edward Behrens in 2005. She was also preceded by fourth brothers, Clarence, Wesley, Ralph and Carl Aebi, and one sister, Irene Merritt. Service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. OTIS - Benjamin 'Ben' F. Schenk, 86, died Oct. 14 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born Feb. 25, 1920, at Otis, the son of Anton J. and Emelia A. Haberman Schenk. A farmer and stockman, he was a resident of Great Bend for five years, coming from Otis. Schenk was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Olmitz, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Hoisington. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II. Survivors include two sisters, Stephanie Cain and Fridolina Schenk, both of Great Bend. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Anton Schenk and Leonard Schenk, and three sisters, Albina Schenk, Margaret Cox and an infant twin sister. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church in Olmitz with the Rev. Ultan Murphy officiating. LITTLE RIVER - Phillip E. Byers, 70, died Oct. 13 at Sandstone Heights Nursing Home in Little River. He was born Sept. 21, 1936, at Little River, the son of George and Jessie Platner Byers. A longtime Little River and Great Bend resident, he associated with Sunflower Diversified Services and Rosewood Service of Great Bend. Byers was of the Methodist faith. He was a former member of the Bowling League of Great Bend. Survivors include a sister, Barbara Hubbard, Little River, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth Byers and Gary Byers; two sisters, Carole Schinstock, and infant Delores Byers. Byron A. Storrer on April 26, 1940, at Jackson, Mo. He died Oct. 5, 1988. She worked as a sales clerk in a clothing store in Illinois. She was a resident of Kansas since 1951, coming from Illinois and Michigan. She was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church, Great Bend, Claflin Boosters Club and the Pink Ladies of Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. Survivors include three daughters, Meredith Vargo of Kanopolis, Judith Vanover of Round Rock, Texas, and Mary Storrer Reed of Wichita; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. John Manuel Medina on Feb. 2, 1948, at Aztec, N.M. He died Jan. 29, 2000. A resident of Larned since 1974, she recently moved to Wichita. She was a retired Fuller Brush Company employee. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Sacred Heart Altar Society, Larned. Survivors include three daughters, Virginia Hoberecht, Wichita, Della 'Gina' Timmons, Great Bend, and Eunice Doty, Cortez, Colo.; one daughter-in-law, Theresa Medina, Larned; two half sisters and four half brothers; 11 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. ELLIS - Alan J. Kinderknecht, 67, died Oct. 12 at Trego-Lemke Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney. He was born Jan. 6, 1939, in Hays to Jacob and Otillia (Bittel) Kinderknecht. He was a lifelong resident of the Ellis area and grew up on a farm north of Ellis. He was a 1957 graduate of Ellis High School. He worked for Fort Hays State University for 24 years and for grocery stores. Alan was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ellis. Survivors include two brothers, Victor Kinderknecht of WaKeeney and Ralph Kinderknecht of Ellis; and two sisters, Ione Dinkel of Ellis and Beatina Weber of Great Bend. He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, James, Eugene, Herman, Walter, Richard and Charlie; and two sisters, Regina Goff and Lillian Wishnuck. Otis W. Hart, 90, of Great Bend, died Oct. 11 at his home. He was born May 6, 1916, on a farm near Colby, in Thomas County, the son of Alvin S. and Lydia M. Kasten Hart. He married
Ruby A. Henning on March 10, 1940, at Great Bend. She died June 30, 1990. On Aug. 18, 1992, he married
Lois D. Nokes. She survives. He worked for the local Chevrolet dealer for 45 years, being a service manager for the last 28 of those years, retiring in 1981. He attended grade schools in Grenola and Madison, attended junior high and high school in McPherson, graduating in 1934, and moved to Great Bend the same year. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the United States Army. He served two years with the 104th Armored Division and 13 months with the 14th Armored Division. He was a member of First Christian Church, Great Bend, where he was a deacon for seven years and an elder for 30 years. He was a member of American Legion Argonne Post 180 and the Elks Lodge No. 1127, and Lake Barton Golf Club, all of Great Bend. He delivered Meals on Wheels for 12 years and served on the board of Barton County Boys Home for 25 years. Survivors include his wife, Lois D., of the home; a son, Larry D. Hart and wife Sandy, of Derby; a daughter, Carol Butler and husband, C.W., of Great Bend; a stepdaughter, Linda Ward and husband Jim, of Westcliffe, Colo.; a sister, Avis Newkirk and husband Bob, Mount Carmel, Ill.; and a granddaughter, Amanda Jo Hart, Olathe. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ino Bural Hart, and a sister, Cleo Ula Hart. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, Great Bend, with the Rev. William F. She was a former member of St. Paul's Catholic Church and a member of St. Ann's Altar Society, both in Angelus. Chief Petty Officer Leonard Eugene Sprout, 65, of Great Bend, died Oct. 9 at the Hutchinson Hospital. He was born Sept. 12, 1941, in Great Bend, the son of Alison Leonard Sprout Jr. and Gertrude Fisher. He was a Great Bend resident, formerly from Wichita, where he lived for 20 years, having moved from Hawaii. He was a retired chief petty officer for the U.S. Navy, serving for 22 years. GOODLAND - Robert L. 'Bob' Soellner, 69, died Oct. 7 at his home in Goodland. He was born Dec. 23, 1936, in Willowdale, the son of James Frank and Coletta Arens Dorf Soellner. He began his education in Willowdale, after the family moved to Sherman County. He continued his education in Kanorado and graduated from Kanorado High School. He married
Janis Hodges on June 6, 1959. After their divorce, he married
Shirley Daniels on Sept. 4, 1976. He had several jobs before making the Rock Island Railroad his career, where he was an engineer for 20 years. After the railroad shut down, he moved his family to Larned, where he worked for Larned State Hospital as a mental health technician until his retirement. Bob was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus, both of Goodland. He was honorably discharged from the Army and the National Guard of both Kansas and Colorado. Survivors include his wife Shirley of Goodland; three sons, Bobby Soellner of Granby, Colo., Roger Soellner and his wife Janie of Canyon Lake, Texas, and Stacy 'Tater' Brackney and his wife Jessica of Prairie View; three daughters, Sharyl Cyphers and her husband Tony of Larned, Katrina Froetschner and her husband Lynn of Round Lake Beach, Ill., and Dottie Swearingen and her husband Weldon of Waxahachie, Texas; his mother, Coletta Soellner of Goodland; his mother-in-law Martha Daniels of Hays; two brothers, Kenny Soellner and his wife Connie of Goodland and Jim Soellner and his wife Sally of National City, Calif; one sister, Mary Butler and her husband Tom of Goodland; two sisters-in-law Della Soellner of Goodland and Leanna Fross and her husband Jerry of Hays; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
