HOISINGTON - Albert Eugene Richardson, 49, died Dec. 21 at Central Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend. He was born May 26, 1957, at Great Bend, the son of Charles and Violet Beavers Richardson. He was a floorhand for Klima Well Service of Claflin. He was a lifetime Hoisington resident and a U.S. Army veteran. Richardson attended the Church of the Nazarene, Hoisington. Survivors include three daughters, Ginny Wuller of Hoisington and Kimberly Richardson and Katie Richardson, both of Great Bend; three sons, Kevin Richardson, Timothy Richardson and Andrew Richardson, all of Great Bend; one sister, Geraldine Richardson of Olathe; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Ida Richardson. Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home, Hoisington, with the Rev. Don Fisher officiating. Burial will be at Hoisington cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 4 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the funeral home. Winifred R. 'Winnie' Gustus

GENESEO - Winifred R. 'Winnie' Gustus, 75, died Dec. 22 in Great Bend. born Aug. 29, 1931, in Little River, she was the daughter of Myrle and Leila Worth Eikleberry. A 1950 graduate of Geneseo High School, she married Donald C. Gustus on Feb. 28, 1950, in Russell. He died Dec. 26, 1976. A lifetime resident of Geneseo, she was a homemaker and former Geneseo librarian. Mrs. Gustus was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, LTC and 50 Plus Club, all of Geneseo. Survivors include two sons, David Gustus and Dallas Gustus, both of Geneseo; one daughter, Dixie Beckham of Great Bend; one brother, William Eikleberry of Byers, Colo.; one sister, Edith Miller of Midwest City, Okla.; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Clifford Eikleberry; three sisters, Dorothy Eikleberry, Elfie Droegemeier and Laberta Hoffman; and one grandson. Graveside service was at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Geneseo cemetery with the Rev. Robert Fleenor officiating. Memorials are suggested to the Kidney Foundation in care of Sillin Funeral Home. Merle Conrad Scheuerman

ELLINWOOD - Merle Conrad Scheuerman, 75, died Dec. 22 at Central Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend. He was born June 8, 1931, at Bison, the son of Conrad E. and Rosa Matal Scheuerman. He married Elvira Basgall Dec. 30, 1952, at La Crosse. An Ellinwood resident since 1952, he worked for Black, Sivalls and Bryson Oilfield Equipment, Milner Tank Service, Ellinwood Tank Service and Farm Service Center. Scheuerman was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the American Legion. He served with the U.S. Army's 5th Armored Division. Survivors include his wife, Elvira, of the home; a son, Merle C. Scheuerman, of Ellinwood; two daughters, Merletta M. Scheuerman and Marietta M. Link, both of Ellinwood; three brothers, Gilbert Scheuerman and Arlyn Scheuerman, both of Great Bend, and Donald Scheuerman of Kalkaska, Mich.; two sisters, Clarinetta Scheuerman of La Crosse and Mary Ann Prose of Chetopa; 12 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three daughters; five brothers, Glenn Scheuerman, Lloyd Scheuerman, Lindy Scheuerman, Marvin Scheuerman and Conrad Scheuerman, two sisters, Velma Morgan and Alvina Brazda, and one grandchild, Jessica Williams. A vigil service and an Altar Society rosary will be at 3 p.m. today at Kimple Funeral Home, Ellinwood. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Kimple Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Virginia Ella Elliott, 77, of Great Bend, died Dec. 22 at her home. She was born Nov. 28, 1929, at Arkansas City, the daughter of James and Edna Rauhoff Pierce. She married Paul Elliott. They were later divorced. She was a homemaker and a resident of Great Bend since 1966, coming from Arkansas City. Survivors include three sons, Gene Elliott of Myrtle Creek, Ore., Terry Tom Tipton, and Don Elliott of Great Bend; two grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Harry Pierce, Ivan Pierce, Cecil Pierce, James Pierce and Don Pierce; and a sister, Barbara Kloxin. A graveside service will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Great Bend cemetery with the Rev. Doyle Smith officiating. Hazel M. 'Peg' Duke, 97, of Great Bend, died Dec. 22 at Cherry Village Nursing Home, Great Bend. She was born May 9, 1909, at Lane, Okla., the daughter of Ernest Howe and Clara Mae Wolbert Jamison. She married Lynn Oliver Duke on July 26, 1926, at Sherman, Texas. He died Oct. 28, 1980. She was co-owner of Duke Oil Company. She was a resident of Great Bend for 60 years. Mrs. Duke was a member of First Christian Church. Survivors include a nephew, Leonard Williamson of Great Bend, and a sister, Wanda Ardelia Bell. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Duward Jamison, Frank Jamison, Earl Jamison and Roy Jamison, and one sister, Neva Williamson. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, with the Rev. Don Paden officiating. Burial will be in the Great Bend cemetery. Inez Jane Royer

Inez Jane Royer, 87, of Great Bend, died Dec. 23 at Grisell Long Term Nursing, Ransom. She was born Jan. 4, 1919, at Bison, the daughter of George and Katie Gillig Kleweno. She married Clarence Keatley, who died in 1955. She then married Mervin Royer on Oct. 5, 1964, at Great Bend. He died Aug. 10, 1997. Mrs. Royer was a retired LPN. A Barton County resident since 1958, coming from Ness County, she most recently resided in Ransom. Mrs. Royer was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Survivors include one son, Alvin Keatley and his wife Karen of Bazine; one daughter, Jeanette McCormick and her husband Sylvester, of McCracken; eight grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and 12 step-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Carolyn Cox; four brothers, Ralph Kleweno, Walter Kleweno, Reuben Kleweno and Herman Kleweno; and three sisters, Leah Robison, Tillie Martin and Alice Margheim. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, with the Rev. Wayne Flanders officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend cemetery. Mary McLaughlin

WOODWARD, Okla. - Mary McLaughlin, 56-year-old Woodward resident and former Great Bend resident, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, at her home. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, in the First Presbyterian Church, Woodward, with Dr. Richard McFarlin officiating. Interment will be in the Elmwood cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Billings Funeral Home, Woodward, Okla. Mary Prather McLaughlin was born Aug. 9, 1950, in Great Bend, to Michael Ross and Othilia Bertha (Bender) Prather. Mary was reared in Great Bend until her senior year in high school when her family moved to Laverne, Okla. She graduated from Laverne High School in 1968. Mary attended Northwestern Oklahoma University and received her bachelor of arts degree in secondary education in 1972. She taught for one year at the Sharon-Mutual (Okla.) schools. Mary was united in marriage to Jerry N. McLaughlin on July 20, 1974, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Woodward, Okla. They were blessed with two children, Ross Andrew and Erin Margaret. They made their home in Stillwater while Jerry was in graduate school. They moved to Manhattan, Kan., in 1979, where Mary started working at Wal-Mart. In the early 1980s the family moved to Alva, Okla., and Mary continued working at Wal-Mart, while Jerry taught school. In 1983 they moved to Bernalillo, N.M. Mary was able to stay home with her children while they lived in New Mexico and she always said it was the best year of her life. They moved to Mutual, Okla., when Jerry's dad had health problems and moved into Woodward in 1990. Mary went to work for Leon Fetzer at the Woodward News and later worked for him at ARDA. In 1991, Mary went to work for the Stock Exchange Bank and continued working there until 2006, when ill health forced her to retire. Mary was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church. She served as worship chairman in the past and taught Sunday school. Mary was involved in the Midday Ambucs, the Woodward County Toy Giveaway, and tutored adults to read. She loved reading, working with her flowers and spending time with her family. Mary loved Ross and Erin's friends and they were always welcome at her house. She was a wonderful mom, wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend and will be missed by all that knew her. Mary thought the world of her daughter-inlaw Kasi. She is survived by her husband, Jerry McLaughlin of the home; one son, Ross McLaughlin and wife Kasi of Tulsa; one daughter, Erin McLaughlin of Stillwater; her parents, Michael and Othilia Prather of Guymon, Okla.; two sisters, Judy Prather of Guymon and Barbara Walton and husband William of Perry, Okla.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Diana Cunningham and husband Don of Duncan, Okla., and Mike McLaughlin of Woodward; nieces, nephew, other relatives and many good friends. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church with the funeral home accepting the contributions. HOISINGTON - Lawrence E. Wag Wagner, 86, died Dec. 21 at Hays Medical Center, Hays. He was born Dec. 30, 1919, at Montrose, Mo., the son of Karl and Olive Thomas Wagner. He married Wilma Lucille Sypolt on April 8, 1950, at Hoisington. He was a retired Missouri Pacific Railroad engineer. He retired in 1980. His early childhood was spent in Holly, Colo. He moved to Hoisington in 1941. He was a member of Faith Community Church, Great Bend; Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, NARVE, Full Gospel Business Men's Fellowship and a 30-year church board member; a partner in C & W Electric Company of Hoisington; and a member of the Lake Barton Golf Club. He was a World War II Army veteran and a recipient of the Purple Heart. Survivors include his wife, Wilma Wagner, of Hoisington; a son, Keith Wagner of Canton, Mich.; two daughters, Wanda Madden of Hoisington and Nora Kirkpatrick of Hays; a sister, Barbara Clifton of Denver; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Nell Marie Wagner, and three brothers, Bernard, Donald and Paul Wagner. HOISINGTON - Vernon L. Deutsch, 79, died Dec. 20 at his residence. He was born April 22, 1927, at Susank, the son of Jonathan and Mary 'Bitter' Deutsch. He married Nadine Karst on April 23, 1950, at Hoisington. He was a co-owner of Highway Service, retired after 35 years of service, and a former City of Hoisington employee. He was a lifetime resident of Hoisington. He was a Hoisington High School graduate of 1946 and a member of the 1946 state basketball championship team. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of Concordia Lutheran Church and VFW Post 7428, both of Hoisington. Survivors include his wife, Nadine Deutsch, of the home; two sons, Brad Deutsch and wife Sheryl of Wichita and Bruce Deutsch and wife Becky of Plymouth, Mich.; a daughter, Brenda Kintz and husband Steve of Cicero, Ind.; a brother, Clarence Deutsch of Great Bend; five grandchildren and one-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Otto Deutsch, Alvin Deutsch, Armin Deutsch and Leo Deutsch, and two sisters, Rosie Kraft and Elsie Ochs. Roger Walker Marsh

KIOWA - Roger Walker Marsh, 91, died Dec. 19 at Kiowa Hospital District Manor in Kiowa. born Oct. 28, 1915, at Belle Plaine, he was the son of Alpheus and Mabel Walker Marsh. He married Agnes Irene Webber on June 27, 1941, in Emporia. She died in May 1985. Roger's wife Sybil McPherson Marsh survives. He graduated from Argonia Senior High School and earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia. He served as an aviation radar technician in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He retired after teaching mathematics, calculus, physics and electronics at Garden City and Great Bend Senior High. After retiring, he moved to Hutchinson, then to Wichita and finally to Kiowa. Mr. Marsh taught Sunday school and sang in the choir as a member of Central Baptist Church in Great Bend. Survivors include four sons, Allen Marsh and wife Nancy of Carmichael, Calif., Dale Marsh and wife Phyllis of Great Bend, Richard Marsh and wife Pil Sun of Haymarket, Va., and Robert Marsh and wife Norma of Mesa, Ariz.; one brother, Millard Marsh of Anacortes, Wash.; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Oliver, Russell and Amos; and by a sister Fannie. There will be no service or visitation as cremation has taken place. Ethel Mae Fagre

LAWRENCE - Ethel Mae Fagre, 90, died Dec. 18 at her home. born Feb. 28, 1916, in Blooming Prairie, Minn., she was the daughter of Thomas L. and Ella Mae Schuck Halstenson. She graduated from high school in Minnesota and later graduated from Fort Hays State University with a bachelor's degree in education. She later earned her master's degree from Emporia State University. She taught elementary school in Minnesota for several years and in Great Bend for 25 years. She married Edwin Harold Fagre on Jan. 19, 1943, in Salt Lake City. He died in 1997. Mrs. Fagre was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Lawrence and the Kansas National Education Association. Survivors include two sons, Roger of Overbrook and Donald of Steamboat Springs, Colo.; two daughters, Carol Hampton of Lawrence and Catherine Meeker of Olathe; a sister, Lorraine Hazen of Sacramento, Calif.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Delmer Gale Brodie, 77, of Great Bend, died Dec. 20 at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. He was born May 24, 1929, at St. Rose Hospital, Great Bend, to Dale and Christine Mueller Brodie. He married Johanna H. Urban on Nov. 9, 1957, at St. John's Catholic Church in Hoisington. They resided in Great Bend for 43 years. He graduated from St. John High School in 1947. He worked for Singer Sewing Center for many years and also at Rowland's Decorating Center. He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick. Delmer served in the U.S. Army from September 1948 until May 1952, stationed in Korea. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Johanna, of the home; a son, Troy Brodie and wife Michelle of Mason, Ohio; a daughter, Terra Raybern and husband Don of Seward; two sisters, Ruby Kidd of Manhattan and Eunice Secor of Dunnellon, Fla.; five grandchildren, Jana Williams and husband Jarret of Wichita, Jeff Raybern of Great Bend, Jeremy Raybern of Seward and Aaron Brodie and Blake Brodie, both of Mason, Ohio; and two great-grandchildren, Kyler Evans and Kinzie Williams. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Wilma Sexton. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend, with Father Reginald A. Urban officiant. BROKEN ARROW, Okla. - Betty Marie Peschka, 86, died Dec. 18 in Broken Arrow, Okla. born Nov. 20, 1920, in Great Bend, she was the daughter of Charles Naylor and Helen Mayes. She married John Peschka on Oct. 29, 1940, and moved to Tulsa, Okla., in 1954, where together they raised eight children. She loved her family and friends, opening her arms to all, as everyone, even her kids, called her 'Grandma.' She could always say the right words to make you feel better or knew that secret item to add to a recipe to make it just right. She was kind, gentle and loving, but you very seldom outfoxed her keen wit when in a good card game! Survivors include her sons and their wives, Don and Claudine of Dale City, Va., Gary and Saundra of Bedford, Texas, Duane and Linda of Norman, Okla., Rick and Jacque of Oklahoma City, Okla., Dennis of Tulsa, Okla., Jim and Karen of Joplin, Mo., and Terry and Debi of Broken Arrow, Okla.; one daughter, Mary Barlow and husband Charles of McAlester, Okla.; one sister, Margaret Tammen of Albert; four sisters-in-law; 21 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John and one granddaughter. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. today at Fitzgerald Southwood Colonial Chapel in Tulsa, Okla. CLAFLIN - Edgar 'Edgie' Disque, 76, died Dec. 19 at Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita. born Dec. 9, 1930, in Claflin, he was the son of Adam A. Disque and Margaret Caroline 'Radenberg' Disque. A resident of Claflin, moving to Colorado in 1970, and back to Claflin in 1994, he was a retired machinist with Hewlitt Packard and prior to that was a farmer. Mr. Disque was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and the recipient of two Purple Hearts. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge #424 and Ralph B. Praeger VFW Post #8668, all of Claflin. Survivors include two sons, Mike Disque and wife Dianna of Claflin, and Richard Disque of Colorado Springs, Colo.; former wife Ruth Costanza of Colorado Springs; five brothers, Charles Disque and Walter Disque, both of Claflin, Marlin Disque of Hoisington, Herman Disque of Lyons and Harvey Disque of Salina; two sisters, Mable Flickinger of Hutchinson and Aline Howser of Chandler, Okla.; two grandchildren, Jacob and Wyatt Disque; and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. Maxine Grover, 79, of Great Bend, died Dec. 19 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center in Great Bend. born May 11, 1927, in Scott County, she was the daughter of Walter Ray and Neva Ellen (Binns) Shearmire. A resident of Great Bend since 1951, coming from Scott County, she was an Avon consultant for 20 years before her retirement. She married Clarence Calvin Grover on Dec. 16, 1966, in Great Bend. Mrs. Grover was a member of the Avon Presidents Club, served three terms as president of the Eagles Ladies Auxiliary of Great Bend, VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Scott City, and a den leader for the Boy Scouts of Great Bend. Survivors include her husband of Great Bend; two sons, Ricky Vaughn Francis and wife Johnnie, and Leslie Todd Francis and wife Linda, all of Great Bend; five daughters, Penny Belle Meitner and husband Gary, Gwini Collette Delgado and husband Frank, and Sheena Charmane Thomas, all of Great Bend, Mavis 'Dinky' Vinsonhaler and husband Dana, and Tawana Rae Berens and husband Todd, all of Lee's Summit, Mo.; three stepsons, Michael Roy Grover and wife Barbara of Colby, Sylvan Blaine Grover and wife Sharon of Borger, Texas, and Daniel Lee Grover and wife Lenora of Hays; one stepdaughter, Cheryl Lynn Weese and husband LeRoy of Chanute; one brother, Ray Shearmire of Garden City; two sisters, Jacque Snow and Lorena Chvilicek, both of Scott City; 18 grandchildren; 19 stepgrandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 37 stepgreat-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Ray and Neva Ellen (Binns) Shearmire; one son, Nava Rolli Graham; three brothers, Hugo Shearmire, Jerry Shearmire and Walter 'Bud' Shearmire; and four sisters, Corrine Brau, Vera Shearmire, Doris Lee and Blanche Gonzales. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Charter Funerals Chapel with Pastor Don Paden officiating. Burial will be at the Great Bend cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. today at Charter Funerals, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Ronald McDonald House.
