Stanley Odegard, 85, of Great Bend, died Dec. 17 at his home in West Palm Beach, Fla. born Sept. 14, 1921, in Breckenridge, Minn., he was the son of Sigvart and Lena Olson Odegard. He married
LaVera Emma Bruns on Sept. 29, 1943, in Hertford, N.C. She died Jan. 23, 1998. A resident of West Palm Beach, Fla. for the last eight years, he was a resident of Great Bend for 50 years. He was a postal clerk for the U.S. Postal Service. Odegard was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserves, retiring in 1981. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 180, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3111, all of Great Bend. He was also a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Lake Park, Fla. Survivors include three sons, Ron Odegard of Jupiter, Fla., Larry Odegard of Westminster, Colo., and Steve Odegard of Hays; one sister, Val Rabbe of Williston, N.D.; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend with the Rev. James A. Strasen officiating. Rodney E. Eller, 71, of Great Bend, died Dec. 17 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. born Jan. 18, 1935, in Downs, he was the son of Clovis and Mary Chapin Eller. He married
JoAnn Klingensmith on April 16, 1961, in Great Bend. A resident of Great Bend for approximately 35 years, coming from Greenville, Texas, he was the former owner of Eller Tire. He was a graduate of Glasco High School and Emporia State University. Eller was an Army Reserve veteran. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Great Bend, having served as an elder and deacon, and was a member of the Presbyterian Men's Club. He was a member of Lake Barton Golf Club and a former member of the Petroleum Club. Survivors include his wife Jody Eller, of the home; two sons, Greg Eller of Great Bend and Steve Eller and wife Kathy of Denver, Colo.; one sister, Marian Collins and husband Bruce of St. Louis, Mo.; a sister-in-law, Judy Eller Specht of Wichita; three nephews, Chris Collins, Chuck Collins and Michael Collins; and three grandchildren, Brian Eller, Michael Eller and Lauran Eller. He was preceded in death by a brother Jim Eller. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Hal Staats officiating. HUTCHINSON - A. Ione Hidde, 84, of Hutchinson, went home to be with the Lord Dec. 16, passing at her home in Casper, Wyo. She was born Sept. 10, 1922, in Jacksonburg, W.Va., the daughter of Arch and Alma Ash Cain. She married
Victor O. Hidde on Nov. 10, 1943, in Coffeyville. He died March 11, 2002. She had been a Hutchinson resident since 1989, moving from Winfield. She was a former resident of Great Bend and had recently moved to Casper to live with her daughter. She graduated from Raymond High School in 1940 and from the Adele Hale Business College in Hutchinson in 1941. She was a secretary at Western Manufacturing in Winfield. Mrs. Hidde was a member of First Southern Baptist Church, Hutchinson, where she was a Sunday school teacher and church librarian. In Casper she was a member of College Heights Baptist Church. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge of Great Bend and a 13-year volunteer for Hospice of Reno County. Survivors include two sons, Jerry Hidde and wife Judy of Hutchinson and Rocky Hidde and wife Shawna of Russell; two daughters, Susan Scheck and husband R.J. of Casper, Wyo., and Donna Hidde of Bunker Hill; a sister, Ida Lou Funk of Winfield; nine grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Don Cain. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First Southern Baptist Church, Hutchinson. A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Hillcrest Memorial Park cemetery, Great Bend, with Pastor Ray E. Kempel officiating. SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Charles E. Webb, of Springfield, passed from this life on Saturday, Dec. 16, at the age of 86. He passed peacefully at Springfield Rehabilitation and Health Care Center. The family is grateful to the staff of SRHCC for the care they gave Charles. Charles was born Aug. 31, 1920, in Rogersville, Mo. Loretta Rogers of Ozark, Mo. They had three daughters during their marriage. In 1958 he married
Lela Rogers of Ozark. They had two sons during their marriage. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Lucille Samuel and her husband Elmer (Cotton), five grandchildren, Christie, Mark, Rebecca, Tanya and Joseph Huff, and his longtime companion Lela Webb. He is survived by two sisters, Marceline Howerton and her husband Don of Mountain Grove, Mo., and Marthena Davis and her husband Jeff of Springfield. Charles is also survived by his children, Beverly Bowers of Rogersville, Mo., Barbara Webb of Cherokee Village, Ark., Bonnie Davis and her partner Floyd of Lamar, Ark., Gene Webb and his wife Vicky of Ellinwood and Rick Webb of Tulsa, Okla.; his five grandchildren and one great grandchild and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Ruth Alefs on June 11, 1934, in Great Bend. She died Oct. 3, 1986. On Jan 25, 1990, he married
Opal Ford in Great Bend. She died June 21, 2003. A lifetime Barton County resident, he was a farmer. Evers was a member of the First Christian Church, serving on the church council, the Masonic Temple and B.P.O.E., all of Great Bend. Survivors include son David Evers of Great Bend; daughter Delores Piper of Houston, Texas; 10 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Delton Evers; four brothers, Elmer Evers, Les Evers, Kirby Evers, and Claire Evers; and two sisters, Alice King and Hazel Kirkman. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. William F. Johnson officiating. Burial will be at the Great Bend cemetery. Ralph H. Baird
1918 - 2006
LARNED - Ralph H. Baird, 88, died Dec. 13 at his home in Larned. born Dec. 13, 1918, at Lar-ned, he was the son of John and Clara Spangler Baird. A longtime resident of Edwards and Pawnee counties, he was the owner of Ralph Baird Motors in Larned. He graduated from Larned High School in 1937. While serving as a mechanic in the Zook community, he learned to fly and joined the Army Air Corps in 1943. He was a B24 Liberator pilot for the Shady Lady, stationed at Hethel Air Base in England from June 1944 until May 1945. Captain Baird flew 23 bombing missions and was awarded several service medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross. He returned to Lewis after World War II and purchased Posey-Baird Ford in 1945. He moved to Kinsley and purchased the Kinsley Ford agency, renaming it Ralph Baird Motors in 1955. In 1974 he purchased Robbins Ford in Larned where he was a Ford dealer, renaming the dealership Ralph Baird Motors, Inc. He was also active in farming. On June 22, 1945, he married
Marian Reed at Larned. She died Sept. 20, 1985. On Dec. 21, 1999, he married
Merlene Lyman in Arkansas. Mr. Baird was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow, past director of the Larned Area Chamber of Commerce, Lewis Masonic Lodge, Wichita Midian Shrine, Experimental Aircraft Association and numerous other community organizations. He served on the city council and as mayor while in Kinsley, was a member and trustee of the Kinsley Congregational Church and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. Survivors include his wife of Larned; one son, Joe Baird of Metemora, Ill.; a daughter, Jean Martin of Oberlin; a sister, Ona Cross of Lewis; a stepson, Jim Lyman of Ellinwood; a stepdaughter, Gina Janes of Hannibal, Mo.; five grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Presbyterian Church in Larned with Pastor Dennis Scheibmeier presiding. Diane Nusbaum on Aug. 13, 1986, in Oklahoma. He was a district judge for the State of Kansas for 28 years, retiring in 1995. He was a resident of Great Bend for 46 years, coming from Topeka and Hays. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict with the rank of staff sergeant. He was a member of the state and local bar associations, Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose, VFW Post 3111 and the Boy Scouts. Survivors include his wife, Diane Nusbaum, of the home; a son, T.J. Rohleder of Lehigh; three daughters, Ann McDaris and Ellen Begnaud, both of Vista, Calif., and Karla Ferguson of Tucson, Ariz.; one brother, Frank Rohleder, of Hays; two sisters, Mary Strunk, of Clearwater, and Laurina Kuhn, of Victoria; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. A vigil service will be at 5 p.m. Sunday at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend. TULSA, Okla. - Marcine McGouldrick Mays, 89, died Dec. 12 at St. Simeon's Nursing Home, Tulsa. born Sept. 6, 1917, in Sapulpa, Okla., she was the daughter of Marguerite Jenning McGouldrick and Phillip J. McGouldrick. She married
Sam W. Mays on Sept. 24, 1943. She lived in El Dorado, Great Bend and, since 1968, in Tulsa. Mrs. Mays was a member of Madalene Catholic Church. Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Sam W. Mays, Sr., of St. Simeon's Nursing Home, Tulsa; four sons, Sam Jr. and Mark of Tulsa, Michael of Edmond, Okla., and William Patrick of Emporia; one brother, Robert F. McGouldrick of Bangor, Calif.; five grandsons, Samuel W. III, Patrick, Michael, Trevor and Tyler. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today at Church of Madalene. SCOTT CITY - Michael D. Donovan, age 52, passed away Dec. 11 at the Emery J. Lilge Hospice House at Huguley Memorial Medical Center in Burleson, Texas. He was born on Nov. 21, 1954, in Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., the son of Carl and Joyce Laudick Donovan. He was a graduate of Dighton High School, where he competed in cross-country events and held a school record for many years. Mike served in the Army at Fort Leonard Wood, Fort Dix, and Germany. Lisa Laird in Las Vegas, Nev. Residents of Fort Worth, Texas, he and his wife spent their time traveling across the country as team truck drivers, and shared many wonderful memories of the places they visited and sites they saw from their windshield. Mike never met a stranger and developed many long-lasting friendships throughout his life. Family was very important to Mike, and he will be deeply missed. He loved family activities and spending time with his grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He also enjoyed computer games, collecting and watching movies, books in any form, and always had time to visit and share stories. Survivors include his wife, Lisa Donovan, of Fort Worth, Texas; three sons, Dominick and wife Rachel Donovan, Ellinwood, Denver Donovan, Holcomb, and Joseph Donovan, Fort Worth; one stepson, Davis Tortoris, Beaumont, Texas; one stepdaughter, Kay Chaloupek, Lumberton, Texas; his mother, Joyce Donovan, Scott City; one brother, Dallas Donovan. A former resident of Great Bend from 1955 to 1985, she was a retired cashier for Gibson's store. Survivors include three daughters, Sharon and husband Roger Vote of Bolivar, Mo., Sonja and husband George Conner of Rogersville, Mo., and Claudia and husband Robert Dietz of Eugene, Ore.; three sons, Kenneth and wife Connie Thompson of Great Bend, Dwayne and wife Irene Thompson of Folsom, Calif., and Mike and wife Jane Thompson of Morrisville, Mo.; 17 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Claypool was a member of the First Christian Church of Stafford, Masonic Lodge of St. John, Stafford Lions Club, Stafford County Country Club, Sons of the American Legion and the Stafford Chamber of Commerce. Survivors include his wife; one son, Kenneth Lee Claypool of Stafford; one daughter, Coralice Marie Rankin of Stafford; his father, James S. Claypool, Sr. of Ness City; one sister, Dallas Brauer, Stafford; one half brother, Leon Claypool of Houston; one half sister, Glenna Wood of Hockley, Texas; and three grandchildren.
