Nona Leeper Feb. 13, 1997, at Bran-son, Mo. He had lived in Ellinwood since 1938. He was a 1938 graduate of Ellinwood High School. He was coowner of Manning Drilling Co., a security guard at Marlett Homes in Great Bend and a greeter at Kimple Funeral Home, Ellinwood. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and its Funeral Choir, Knights of Columbus Council 1187, the American Legion, Ellinwood City Council and a former mayor of Ellinwood. Survivors include his wife, Nona, of the home; a son, Mike, of Great Bend; four daughters, Carol Ann Martin of Paola, Mary Margaret Brown of Olathe, Susie Smith of Heartland, Wis., and Jane Murray of Wichita; two stepsons, Darrell Ratlief of McPherson and Dennis Ratlief of Wichita Falls, Texas; a stepdaughter, Arlinda Ehler of Amarillo, Texas; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, John, and a brother, Delmer. An Altar Society Rosary will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Kimple Funeral Home, Ellinwood. A vigil service will be at 7 p.m., followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary, also Friday at the funeral home. LINDSBORG - Stephen C. English, Jr., 30, of Lindsborg, formerly of Great Bend, died Dec. 12. born May 14, 1976, in Russell, he was the son of Stephen C. English and Sarah Annette Dickson. A resident of Lindsborg since 2005, moving from Great Bend, he was a welder for PKM Steel Services of Salina. Mr. English was a member of the First Baptist Church in Great Bend and a former member of Eastside Baptist Church. Survivors include his mother Annette and stepfather Steve Burkey of Lindsborg; father Stephen C. English of Cocoa, Fla.; one daughter, Desteny English of Great Bend; grandmothers Sherla Hopp of McPherson and Teresa Hendry of Cocoa, Fla; two half brothers, Guy Burkey of Lindsborg and Michael English of Cocoa, Fla.; a stepbrother, Christopher Dowdy of Cocoa, Fla.; one sister, Betty Ann Fletcher of Collingswood, N.J.; and a half sister, Jacala Burkey of Lindsborg. Floyd A. Wilson on April 14, 1943, in Larned. A resident of Great Bend since 1958, she was a homemaker and owned her own day-care until retirement. Mrs. Wilson was a member of First Christian Church of Great Bend. Survivors include two sons, Ron D. Wilson and wife Cindy, and Steve L. Wilson, all of Great Bend; two daughters, Connie E. Legg and husband Kline of Great Bend and Donna K. Hanks and husband David L. of Overland Park; one brother, Kenneth D. Dreese of Larned; one sister, Dorothy L. Kennedy of Okmulgee, Okla.; eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and by one son, Fred A. Wilson. RUSSELL - Lydia (Boxberger) Krug, 94, died Dec. 11 at Russell Regional Hospital. She was born Oct. 10, 1912, on the family farm south of Russell. She grew up in the Fossil Creek area and attended school in Russell. She married
Raymond Harold Krug on June 14, 1930, in Russell. He died on Feb. 4, 1990. A homemaker, Krug also worked as a cook at the Grant School during the early 1950s . She had been a resident of Vintage Place since May of 1995. Mrs. Krug was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Russell and was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She also was a member of the Rebekah Lodge of Russell. Survivors include two sons, Jerry Krug of Katy, Texas, and Ron Krug of Russell; 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, James and Larry Krug, two sisters, Minnie Morgenstern and Lena Becker, and five brothers, Emanuel Boxberger, William Boxberger, Edward Boxberger, Benjamin Boxberger and Leo Boxberger. Celebration of her life is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, followed by burial at the St. John's Lutheran cemetery in Russell. FORT SMITH, Ark. - Dalton 'Buddie' Sanders, 84, a resident of Fort Smith since 1960, passed away Dec. 11 at a Fort Smith nursing home. He was born Dec. 16, 1921, at Cedar Creek, Ark., the son of James Gary and Lillie Sanders, the ninth of 12 children. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the 36th Calvary REC SQD and receiving the Purple Heart. After the war he received his engineer's license building radio and television stations throughout Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. Sanders was a member of the Haven Heights Baptist Church. On Jan. 5, 1944, he married
Ann Estelle Parr. They were married
53 years. Survivors include one son, Donald Wayne Sanders of Sterling, Kan.; one daughter, Sherry Wann Wewers of Hope, Ark.; two sisters, Lyda Hayes of Grain Valley, Mo., and Dayle Oliver of Fort Smith, Ark.; seven grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. She was born June 25, 1940, in Great Bend, the daughter of Albert Patrick and Adella Mary Machal Brenner. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, she graduated from Great Bend High School in 1958. She was a homemaker. Ms. Becker was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose, St. Rose Altar Society and Delta Theta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, all of Great Bend. A resident of Bushton for 7 1/2 years, coming from Olmitz, she was a registered nurse at Central Kansas Medical Center for 30 years. Ms. Mantz was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church and Altar Society of Olmitz. Survivors include three nieces, Kathy Ochs of Great Bend, Carol Neely of Kinsley and Debbie Besperat of Branson, Mo.; one sister-in-law, Ann Mantz of Great Bend; close friend Marietta Mooney of Bushton; and great-nieces and nephews. WaKEENEY - Edward J. Martin Sr., 80, died Dec. 10 at Hays Medical Center in Hays. He was born June 4, 1926, in Walbach, Neb., the son of James Wilbur and Bella Marie (Adams) Martin. On Oct. 14, 1950, he married
Martha Mary Dupont in St. Anthony's Church in Sterling, Colo. He attended rural Stevens School in Sterling, Colo. In the early years, Edward worked in the oil patch before going to work for Dresser Industry. He worked for them for 25 years as a truck driver and warehouse manager, retiring in 1983. Martin was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 871 of Plainville, where he served as post commander in 1968 and 1969, and was a charter member of the Eagles Lodge 3774 of WaKeeney. He was a guard patrolman in the Army, serving in World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Eddie Martin of Great Bend and Tony Martin of WaKeeney; one daughter, Pat Lovin of Ellis; two brothers, Roland Martin of Hastings, Neb., and Jay Martin of Sterling, Colo.; two sisters, Ella Renner of Rock Springs, Wyo., and Viola Hoselton of Gernsey, Wyo.; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, William Martin, a daughter, Patricia K. Martin, and two grandsons, Andy and Randy Hankins. Barbara Deweese on June 2, 1956, in Ellinwood. Buckbee was a member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ, Church Council, Lions Club, USD 355 School Board and American Legion, all in Ellinwood. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Brian Buckbee of Ponca City, Okla.; four daughters, Debbie Jackson of Great Bend, Sandy Parke and Lori Thomas, both of Ellinwood, and Robin Waters of Wellfleet, Neb.; three sisters, Iris Pohlman, Margie Wallace and Madge Yarmer, all of Ellinwood; and nine grandchildren. He was a resident of Hoisington since 1985, coming from Olmitz. Mr. Haberman was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council 2100, 3rd and 4th Degrees, Olmitz; American Legion Post 286, Hoisington, and Fraternal Order of Eagles 2451, Great Bend. Steve Jackson, 47, of Porter, Texas, died Dec. 5 in Humble, Texas, as the result of a shooting. He was born Nov. 28, 1959, in Borger, Texas, to Jim and Linda Jackson. A resident of the Houston area since 1988, coming from Great Bend, he was a technical sales representative for the family-owned business. He married
Holly Cook on June 21, 1980, in Great Bend. Steve was a 1978 graduate of Great Bend High School. He lived life to the fullest and loved riding his Harley-Davidson motorcyle with his wife. He was a humble servant and was a volunteer firefighter for both the Kingwood and Porter fire departments. He is survived by his wife Holly; one daughter, Lindsey, and one son, Blake. Other survivors include his parents, Jim and Linda; brother Dan and his wife Jamie and their two children; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Dave and Shirlee Cook; brother-in-law David Cook and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mike and Susan Williams and their daughter Jenna. LARNED - Gail F. Klein, 76, died Dec. 8 at St. Joseph Long Term Care, Larned. He was born Dec. 24, 1929, the son of Clarence C. and Georgia Angie Fisher Klein. A lifetime resident of Pawnee County, he was a retired farm laborer and truck driver. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was of the Christian faith. Survivors include nephews, Dwight Shank, Hutchinson, and Dwane Shank, Greensburg, and several other nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Laverne, DeLoyd and Lester, and one sister, Ruth Shank.
