HOISINGTON - Geary Grant Guthrie, 67, died Jan. 7 at Mercy Hospital, Coon Rapids, Minn. He was born March 12, 1937, at Utica, the son of Harry and Inez (Smith) Guthrie. He married
Sue Temple Dec. 7, 1959, at Great Bend. She survives, of the home. He was a former Hoisington resident and had lived in Coon Rapids for the last several years. He was a retired truck driver for Consolidated Freight with 30 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1954 to 1958. Survivors include a daughter, Melanie Siganos, of Coon Rapids, Minn.; his mother of Hoisington; a sister, Judy Guthrie of Craig, Colo.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Don Guthrie. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Lupe Ann Montelongo

ODESSA, Texas - Lupe Ann Montelongo, beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend, died Dec. 22, 2004, of a sudden illness, in Wichita. Lupe was born in Patterson, Calif., but was raised in Odessa, Texas, until 1993. She moved to Great Bend and married
Salvador Montelongo, also of Great Bend. Lupe was a great mother to her three children, Abel, Alberto 'Rigo, ' and Samantha, all of Great Bend. Lupe was preceded in death by her father, Luis F. Cobarobio and is survived by her mother, Rosalinda Flores. She is also survived by her brother, Joe Luis Cobarobio of Odessa, Texas, and her sister, Rebecca Cobarobio of Austin, Texas; grandmothers, Juanita Vasquez and Jesusita Ramos of Odessa, Texas. She also had two nieces, Carmen and Corina Cobarobio, both of Odessa, Texas. Lupe was Catholic and an active member of her community. She participated in several organizations and was extremely active in the Cinco de Mayo celebrations. She was bilingual and was affectionately known as the 'town interpreter, ' who never turned away anyone in need. Lupe was also a Notary Public. Lupe worked as a receptionist for the WeCare Clinic. Lupe had worked hard to complete her GED in 2004 and had just completed her first semester of college. She was working for a degree in administration and one day had hoped to own her own business. She felt it was never too late to go back to school and better yourself. Lupe was buried in Odessa, Texas, on Dec. 28, 2004. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in her honor on Jan. 14, 2005, at 6 p.m. with Father Ted Stoecklein officiating at the St. Rose Catholic Church, 1424 Baker Street, Great Bend. The family will receive visitors with a reception following at the Auditorium. The family of Lupe Montelongo would sincerely like to express the gratitude for all that this great community has done for us in our time of loss.
Marie Wilhelmina Hallenbeck

TONGANOXIE - Marie Wilhelmina Hallenbeck, 87, died Jan. 10 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence. She was born July 5, 1917, in Lawrence, the daughter of Louie and Mary Reimer Milleret. Marie passed away Monday after suffering from cancer. She was born in Lawrence and raised in Linwood. She graduated from Linwood High School. She was employed as a bus driver for Mackey Rural Grade School and also for the Tonganoxie School district. She was employed by Leavenworth County for over 20 years. Up until 2004 she was delivering home bound meals, when she had to leave due to hip surgery. She was a member of Happy Hour Social Club, and United Methodist Church of Tonganoxie. She married
George S. Hallenbeck on Nov. 24, 1938. They were married
for 49 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, George, who died in 1987, and two brothers, Henry and George Milleret. She is survived by three sons, Roger Hallenbeck of Great Bend, Ronnie Hallenbeck of Johnston, Iowa, and Larry Hallenbeck of Beijing, China; one brother, L.J. 'Pete' Milleret of Lawrence; one sister, Bertha Wise of Lawrence; and two grandchildren. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral home in Lawrence. Burial will be at the Memorial Park cemetery. The body will lie in state today from 5 to 9 p.m. The family will receive friends Thursday from 1:30 p.m. until service time at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. SEATTLE, Wash. - Susie L. Keith Beverly died Jan. 5 in Seattle, Wash., at the Northwest Hospital and Medical Center, after a short illness. She was the daughter of Cagie Nobles and Georgia Nobles Stewart. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church in Derby. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the church. Van Doubek

PRATT - Van Doubek, 80, died Saturday, Jan. 8, at Pratt Regional Medical Center. A lifelong resident of Pratt County, he was born July 29, 1924, at Coats, the son of Van and Fannie V. Street Doubek. He graduated from Coats High School. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving as sergeant with the 509th Composite Group under Col. Paul V. Tibbetts in the Pacific Theater, where his squadron delivered the first atomic bomb to the Enola Gay on Tinian Island. On June 4, 1949, he married
Ellen Louise Hamar in Pratt. She preceded in death on Sept. 29, 1994. He worked for Lion Oil Company and later owned Doubek Monument Company. Following his retirement he was active with RSVP as a bus driver. Mr. Doubek was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pratt and V.F.W. Post No. 1362. He was a member and past Grand Master of Kilwinning Lodge No. 265, receiving his 50 year pin in 2004. He is survived by one son, Robert Van Doubek of Denver, Colo., and two daughters, Nora Jean Shorock of Great Bend and Carol Ann Lewis of Castle Rock, Colo; three grandsons, James Butler of Goddard, Tom Shorock of Lawrence, Kent Holder of Salina; and two great-grandchildren, Raquel and Robert Butler of Goddard. He is also survived by three brothers, Doyle Doubek of Bella Vista, Ark., Dr. Herbert Dale Doubek of Belleville and Edwin Doubek of Hoisington. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. today at the First United Methodist Church in Pratt with the Rev. Kendal Utt presiding. HAYS - Velma M. Kober, 91, died Saturday, Jan. 8, at the Good Samaritan Center of Hays. She was born March 9, 1913, in rural Bison, the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Appel Schwindt. Mrs. Kober was a two-year resident of Hays, moving there from La Crosse, where she had been a resident since 1973. She was a homemaker. She married
William Charles Kober on Aug. 30, 1938, in Greely, Colo. Mrs. Kober loved to cook, bake, sew, and read. She especially enjoyed family gatherings. Survivors include one daughter, Judith K. Case and her husband, Roy L. Case of Hays; two grandchildren, Tonya Norton of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Nicholas 'Nick' Case of Carlsbad, N.M.; three great-grandchildren, Camden Case, and Shae Case, both of Carlsbad, N.M., and Joshua Case of Hays. She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Elizabeth Appel Schwindt; her husband, William Charles Kober on June 6, 1978; one brother, Leon 'Ab' Schwindt; and three sisters, Louella Reissing, Leola Shank, and Leona Schwindt. Eugene Elmer Klotz, 79, died Jan. 8 at Central Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend. He was born Jan. 26, 1925, the son of Robert and Phoebe Jantzen Klotz. A lifetime area resident, he had worked in the oilfield for Sun Oilwell Cementing and Baker Hughes. He was of the Catholic faith. He was a pharmacist mate in the Navy during World War II. Survivors include two sons, Douglas E. Klotz of Modesto, Calif., and Donald Joe Klotz of Lee's Summit, Mo.; three daughters, Carol J. Durant and Mary J. Irick, both of Great Bend, and Annette M. Moore of Wichita; two brothers, Robert Klotz of Hays and Eddie Klotz of Lawrence; two sisters, Mildred Spratt of Wilson and Roberta Coon of Wichita; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Reinhold and William Klotz, and three sisters, Elizabeth Weber, Helen Smirch and Gloria Klotz.
