Anna G. Cook, 99, of Great Bend, died on March 28 at her home. She was born Jan. 16, 1906, in Adair, Mo., the daughter of Henry A. Fisher and Anna L. Cooper Fisher. She attended Barton County Public School. She married
Elmer C. Cook in 1938 in Great Bend. They farmed north of town for 42 years. Elmer passed away in 1980. Anna had worked as a sales clerk for 18 years in Colorado and California before returning to Great Bend. She was a member of the Lakeside Club and First Church of Christ Science. She enjoyed family, friends, cooking, reading and shopping. Survivors include one daughter, Carol A. Langen of Great Bend; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Juanita Minten, and 10 brothers and sisters. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 30, at the First Assembly of God Church in Great Bend with the Rev. Dwight Dozier officiating and the Rev. Mitch Reece presiding. A private burial will be held at Hillcrest cemetery at a later date. Memorials are suggested to Assembly of God Senior Ministries. Anita Tavern Sewell

RUSSELL - Anita Tavern Sewell, 80, died Saturday, March 26, at St. John's Care Center in Victoria. She was born Feb. 1, 1925, at Sault Sainte Marie, Mich., the daughter of Michael Angelo and Mary Congetta (Fornicola) Tavern. She grew up in Sault Sante Marie and attended St. Mary's Catholic School and graduated from Loretta Academy in Sault Sainte Marie. On Jan. 5, 1943, she was united in marriage to Edward Hamilton Sewell at Oklahoma City, Okla. They shared over 62 years of married
life together. She was a homemaker, wife and mother for all of her lifetime. She and her family moved to Russell in September of 1958, from Ellinwood. She had been a resident of St. John Care Center in Victoria since July of 2003. In earlier years she enjoyed crocheting afghans, crafting and fishing. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Russell; Russell County Catholic Women and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6240 Auxiliary. She is survived by her husband, Ed Sewell of the home; one son, Edward H. Sewell II of Longmount, Colo.; one daughter, Judy Anne Mazzarella of Placentia, Calif.; one brother, Donald Tavern of Tacoma, Wash.; one sister, Genevieve Goudie of Port Huron, Mich.; four grandchildren, Stacy Cassidy, Matthew Ater, Joshua Ater and David Sewell; and four great-grandchildren, Hope Cassidy, Jenna Cassidy, Lexi Ater and Riley Ater. Anita was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers and six sisters. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 31, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Russell with Fr. Charles Steier, Fr. James Grennan and Deacon Robert Snyder officiating. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Catholic cemetery in Russell. Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Pohlman-Heise Mortuary in Russell where the parish vigil services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday evening. SEWARD - Clarence E. Horyna, 72, died March 26, at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center in Great Bend. He was born July 2, 1932, at Timken, the son of Edward C. and Marie Rose (Kremela) Horyna. He married
Grace Alexander April of 1956 in Larned. A resident of Seward, he was a self-employed carpenter and worked for the city of Lyons, and then the Great Bend City Street Department. Horyna was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3111 and American Legion Post 180, both of Great Bend. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Clarence Richard Horyna of Pittsburg; seven daughters, Terri Chartier, Barbara Malone and Sherri Kober, all of Great Bend, Audrey Brent of Gillete, Wyo., Jan Rae Johnson of Watson, Ill., Denise Pina of Hutchinson, and Debra Pratt of Pratt; three brothers; six sisters; 24 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one grandchild; and one sister, Sylvia. Funeral will be at 3 p.m. today at Charter Funerals Chapel in Great Bend with the Rev. Rene Guesnier officiating. Burial will be at the Great Bend cemetery, Veteran's Circle, with graveside rites conducted by Fort Riley Honors Guards. Glen Ivan Redding on March 24, 1934, at El Dorado. He died on Jan. 20, 1957. She married
John Schulz on Jan. 1, 1959, at Bushton. He died Dec. 3, 1991. She was a longtime resident of Bushton, and a homemaker. Mrs. Schulz was a member of the Methodist Church in Bushton. Survivors include two sons, Don Redding of Bushton and Dale Redding of Augusta; two daughters, Connie Appel of Ellsworth and Sue Meier of Ellinwood; one sister, Patricia Beckner of California; 13 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother; three sisters; and one grandson, Byron Meier. Funeral will be at 1 p.m. today at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington with the Rev. TURON - Joan Elaine Green, age 60, passed away Tuesday, March 22, as the result of an automobile accident on U.S. Highway 50, near Sylvia. She was born Nov. 7, 1944, at Superior, Neb., the daughter of Earl and Geraldine (Bechtold) Stafford. She was employed by The Turon Record as an editor. She was a member of the Turon Community Church, in Turon, and was an Awana Cubbies Leader, and member of UMW of Turon. On July 3, 1965, she married
Larry R. Green at Osborne. He survives. Other survivors include three daughters, Sheryl Green and Karen Kalmer, both of Turon, and Rebecca Green of Manhattan; three sons, Mark Green and Homer Green, both of Plainville, and David Green of Augusta; father, Earl Stafford of Turon; one sister, Diane Stafford of Turon; two brothers, Stan Stafford of Olathe and Richard Stafford of Ulysses; and 10 grandchildren, Zachory, Logan, Petyon, Madisyn, Andrea, Maverick, Dylan, Emily, Erika and Mason. Sylvia E. Deckert, 97, died March 24 at Hospice House in Hutchinson. She was born Jan. 21, 1908, at Cheyenne Wells, Colo., the daughter of Oscar and Eva Rife William. She married
Ivan E. Deckert on June 3, 1928, at Great Bend. He died Dec. 13, 1977. She was a lifetime resident of the Great Bend area and a homemaker. Mrs. Deckert was a member of the First Christian Church of Great Bend. Survivors include two sons, Delbert Deckert of Salina and Gary Deckert of Lucas, Texas; three daughters, Dolores Westfall of Great Bend, Dorothy Bryan of Liberal and Patricia Archer of McPherson; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by six brothers, George Williams, John Williams, Joe Williams, Robert Williams, Warren Williams and Earl Williams; three sisters, Jane Freeman, Helen Williams and Golda Duggan; and three grandsons, Dale Westfall, Michael Bryan and Steven Deckert. Loren Wesley Miller on May 5, 1935, at Otis. He died Sept. 13, 1974. She married
Clifford Nels Lund on April 2, 1977, at Great Bend. He died Nov. 23, 1983. She was a homemaker and the co-owner of the Corner Grocery in Heizer for 25 years. She was a resident of Great Bend since 1967, coming from Heizer. Lund was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the High Rise Kitchen Band, TOPS and Meals on Wheels. Survivors include one daughter, Joanna Jordan and her husband Clifford of Great Bend; two sisters, Lorene Kline of Kansas City, Kan., and LaVerna Cavender of Springfield, Mo.; two grandsons, Michael Wesley Jordan and his wife Kathy of Hutchinson and Scott Edward Jordan and his wife Heather of Denver; and two great-grandchildren, Caroline and Grant Jordan of Denver. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Marvin Laeger and Loren Laeger. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 29, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Great Bend, with Pastor Julie Shields officiating. Interment will be in the Otis Methodist cemetery at Otis. Nicholas J. Klepper on Sept. 23, 1929, at Seward. He died June 12, 1968. She was a lifetime area resident and a homemaker. Mrs. Klepper was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Altar Society and Daughters of Isabella, all of Ellinwood. Survivors include two sons, Kenneth M. Klepper of Great Bend and Raymond Klepper of Seguin, Texas; one nephew, Mike Strobl of Ellinwood; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Harmie McCarty Jan. 20, 1932, in Fontana. She was a lifetime resident of Holyrood, and was a private piano instructor. Mrs. McCarty was a member of First Baptist Church in Lorraine. Survivors include one son, Lonnie D. McCarty of Ellinwood; two daughters, Elaine Nienke of Ellsworth and Kay Kratzer of Holyrood; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harmie, on Nov. 19, 1972, and by one son, Leonard G. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Lorraine with the Rev. George Redington and Dr. Jim Morford officiating. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Goodrich cemetery in Parker. Gearld C. Piland, 54, died March 22. He was born on Sept. 23, 1950, at Gainesville, Mo., to Carl and Thelma Piland. Gearld grew up in Pratt, where he spent most of his childhood. He later moved to Great Bend, and resided there for many years where he was self-employed and owned and operated Piland's Oil Reclaiming. On June 2, 2001, he married
Sherry Runyan in Las Vegas, Nev. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Brian, serving in the U.S. Army in Iraq; a daughter, Angela, and her fiancé, Jeremy Brown of Hutchinson; two stepsons, Larry Miller and wife, Deanna, of Newport News, Va., and Brian Miller and wife, Joanne, of Hutchinson; his mother, Thelma of Ava, Mo.; sisters, Judy Roberts of Great Bend and twin sister, Geraldine Lee and husband, Bob, of Ellinwood; nieces and nephews, Lisa Boone and family of Greeley, Colo., Gary and Carrie Roberts and family of Pratt, Justin Roberts and family of Hutchinson, Amanda Roberts of Great Bend, Shandra and Jim Woody and family of Pratt, Sonya and Gary Julian and family of Great Bend, and Chris Lee of Ellinwood. He is also survived by a grandson, Korey; and four granddaughters, Searphine, Alaina, Alix and Karsin. Survivors also include many close family members and friends.
