Obituary: Stanley Frank Russell, 80, Manhattan, KS passed away Saturday, January 20, 2007 in the Stoneybrook Health Care Center, Manhattan.

He was born June 26, 1926 at Goodman, MO, the son of Walter Charles Russell and Lena Ethel Adcock Russell. He grew up in Hoisington, KS and attended the local schools.

In 1943, at the age of 17 years, Mr. Russell joined the U.S. Navy and served in the South Pacific, during World War II, in aviation ordinance. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

He was united in marriage to Evelyn L. Linton on November 23, 1945 at Dallas, TX. She survives of the home.

Mr. Russell had been a Manhattan resident since 1946. He worked as a stone mason in the Manhattan area for many years. His first job, after coming to Manhattan, was on the construction of the new Ahearn Field House. He had also helped in the construction of many of the other buildings on the K-State campus and the public library.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Manhattan and had served on the church Council as well as being a High School and Sixth grade Sunday school teacher. He was also active in Manhattan’s little league baseball programs for over 20 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Robert Russell; and an infant sister, Opal Russell; one grandson; and two great grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Russell is survived by four sons, Stanley Pat Russell, David John Russell, Terry Lee Russell, and his wife, Debbie and Robert Eric Russell, all of Manhattan; four daughters, Virginia Elizabeth Russell, and her husband, Myrle Zimmerman, Manhattan, Barbara Gassmann, and her husband, Mike, Riley, KS, Janeva Steger, and her husband, David, Lawrence, KS and Larraine Kaye Blodgett, and her husband, Randy, Blackhawk, CO; a brother, Charles Wilber Russell, and his wife, Berdene, Pawnee Rock, KS; 26 grandchildren; and 36 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, January 25, 2007 in the First Lutheran Church, Manhattan with the Rev. Dr. Keith E. Wiens officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

Obituary: Ruth K. Walter, 91, Manhattan, KS passed away Friday, January 19, 2007 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.

She was born October 5, 1915 at Wakefield, KS, the daughter of George A. Kent and Nina R. Allen Kent. She grew up in Wakefield where she attended the local schools and was a 1933 graduate of the Wakefield High School.

She was united in marriage to Stuart Walter on October 4, 1933 at Wamego, KS. He preceded her in death on December 27, 1993.

Mrs. Walter started and ran the bakery at Ft. Riley, KS from 1951-1952 and later worked as a clerk with civil service at Ft. Riley from 1953-1956. Along with her husband, she co-owned and operated the Cedar Court Restaurant and Dairy Sweet in Clay Center from 1957-1961. In 1962 the Walters moved to Manhattan and Mrs. Walter worked as a clerk in the personnel office at Kansas State University from 1967 until her retirement in 1980.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Walter was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Charles H. Kent and Raymond Kent.
Survivors include a son, Ronald K. Walter, and his wife, Jeanette, Topeka; two daughters, Margaret L. Toburen, Clay Center, KS and Barbara K. Carlson, and her husband, Gayle, Atchison, KS; 10 grandchildren; four step grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; 10 step great grandchildren; and two step great great grandchildren.

Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 24, 2007 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan with the Rev. Dr. Joseph A. Jones officiating. Inurnment will be at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday in the Highland Cemetery, Wakefield, KS.

Obituary: Professor Ernst K. Horber, 87, Manhattan, KS passed away Sunday, January 14, 2007 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.

He was born January 16, 1919 at Herisau, Switzerland, the son of Konrad Horber and Eda Eppenberger Horber. He grew up in Switzerland, where he received his elementary, secondary and college educations. He received several degrees from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and in 1954 received a Ph.D. degree in Entomology from Kansas State University.

Dr. Horber spent many years as an entomologist with the Swiss Experiment Station specializing in host plant resistance. In 1970, he came to Manhattan to join the K-State University staff. As an entomologist, he was particularly interested in the resistance of plants to insects. He was internationally recognized for his pioneering research in resistance of alfalfa to insects. Most of the alfalfa hybrids grown in Kansas and the Midwest incorporate some of his work. As a teacher, Professor Horber inspired his students with his intellectual approach to research and his worldly knowledge of host plant resistance. He retired in 1984.

In Switzerland, he was a member of numerous scientific societies and commissions. He was also a member of the Entomological Society of American, the Biometric Society and the Gamma Sigma Delta and Sigma Xi fraternities.

Survivors include a son, Ruedi E. Horber, and his wife, Rosa, of the Dominican Republic; two daughters, Barbara C. McGee, and her husband, Michael, Colleyville, TX and Katherine Horber, of Switzerland; and ten grandchildren, Rosina, Paula, Rudolfo, Rachel, Christina, Daniel, Brandon, Mary-Casey, John-Michael and Rachel.

Cremation is planned. A Celebration of Life will be held in the family home at 2400 Buena Vista Dr., Manhattan on Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at 3:00 p.m.

Obituary: Eulalia A. “Tootie” Fair, 80, Manhattan, KS passed away Wednesday, January 3, 2007 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.

She was born September 15, 1926 at Wabaunsee, KS, the daughter of Harry Garland and Anna Black Garland. She grew up in the Zeandale community where she attended the local schools and was a graduate of the St. George, KS High School.

She was united in marriage to James G. Fair on July 26, 1945 at Manhattan. He preceded her in death on June 21, 1993.

Mrs. Fair was a lifelong resident of the Manhattan area. She was a homemaker and was devoted to helping her husband in the family business, Central Mechanical Construction Company, for many years.

She was a member of the St. Thomas More Catholic Church, the Manhattan Country Club, and K-State’s Presidents and Ahearn Clubs. She was an avid golfer being a Past Ladies Champion at the Stagg Hill Golf Club. She loved K-State football, playing cards and traveling.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Melvin, Everett and Dale Garland; and two sisters, Clarice Colson and LaVerne Carr.

Survivors include two sons, Dennis G. Fair, and his wife, Deborah, and Mont J. Fair, and his wife, Marsha, all of Manhattan; five grandchildren, Todd Fair, James David Fair, and his wife, MaryAnne, Lindsey Fair, Bridget Fair and Benjamin Fair; and two great grandchildren, Elizabeth and Nicholas Fair.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 6, 2007 in the St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Manhattan with Father Don Zimmerman as celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery, in the Elbo community, east of Manhattan.

A Parish Vigil service will be at 6:30 p.m., Friday, January 5, 2006 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan followed by a family visitation at 7:00 p.m.

Obituary: Keller Cordon, 88, Manhattan, KS passed away Friday, December 15, 2006 in the Mercy Regional Hospital, Manhattan.

He was born June 19, 1918 in rural Nemaha County, KS, the son of Frank L. Cordon and Verna D. Keller Cordon. He grew up in Nemaha County and attended the local schools and was a graduate of the Bancroft Rural High School in 1936. He received his degree in Agriculture Engineering from Kansas State University in 1946.

Mr. Cordon was in ROTC at Kansas State University. He served in the Army in the European Theater during WWII. He had been a Manhattan resident since 1946. He was employed at the Portland Cement Association as a Field Engineer for over 25 years and traveled most of Kansas. He also was employed by the Division of Water Resources in Topeka for 12 years.

He was united in marriage to Mary Louise Gudgell Cordon on January 31, 1947 at Olathe, KS. She preceded him in death on September 1, 2006.

Keller was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and an usher for many years. His other memberships included American Legion Post No. 17, Lafayette Lodge No. 16, A.F. & A.M., Manhattan, Manhattan Shrine Club, Scottish Rite, Manhattan Country Club, National Society of Professional Engineers, Kansas Society of Professional Engineers, KSU Investment Club and was a lifetime member of the KSU Alumni Association. His interests included playing golf, reading, gardening, fishing and hunting.

Mr. Cordon is survived by a daughter, Patti Berlin, Jackson, WY; a son, Frank K. Cordon, and his wife, Peggy, Wichita; five grandchildren, Christopher Cordon, Lisa Cordon, Mark Cordon, Lauren Berlin and Patrick Berlin; two great granddaughters, Aubree and Malaina Cordon; and one sister, Verna Suberkropp, Springfield, IL.

In addition to his wife Mary, he was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Rowena McKnight, Marjorie Cordon, Ines Olson and Lois Alley.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 19, 2006 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday in the Mt. Washington Cemetery, Independence, MO.

The family of Mr. Cordon will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m., Monday at the funeral home.

Obituary: Emilio Gutierez, 68, a longtime Manhattan resident, passed away Sunday, April 29, 2007 in the Westy Community Care Home, Westmoreland.

He was born September 4, 1938 at Florence, CO, the son of Ralph Gutierez and Petra Ouardo Gutierez. He grew up Canon City, CO and attended the local schools.

He was united in marriage Mary Gomez on April 15, 1960 at Canon City. They were later divorced.

Mr. Gutierez worked as a roofer and had been a Manhattan area resident since 1970. He was a member of the Catholic Church.

Survivors include two sons, Joseph A. Gutierez, California and Anthony Ray Gutierez, Wichita, KS; a step son, Eddie Vigil, Colorado Springs, CO; a daughter, Jessica Gutierez, Manhattan; two sisters, Betty Gonzalez and Ruby Gonzalez, both of California; and two grandchildren, Briyona and Kobe Gutierez.

Obituary: Margaret R. Adams, 77, formerly of Manhattan, KS, passed away Sunday, April 29, 2007 in the Shawnee Mission Medical Center, Shawnee Mission, KS.

She was born June 27, 1929 at Manhattan, the daughter of James R. Rowe and Hilda Theresa Mallon Rowe. She grew up in Manhattan, where she attended the local schools and was a graduate of Sacred Heart Academy. She had also attended Kansas State University.

She was united in marriage to Robert N. Adams on September 4, 1954 at Manhattan.

With the exception of those years when she lived in Germany and state side military bases following her husband’s military career, Mrs. Adams had been a lifelong Kansas resident. She was a homemaker and a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, while residing in Manhattan.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Robert and Bill; and five sisters, Betty, Gladys, Bertha, Thelma and Bessie.

Survivors include two sons, Michael E. Adams, and his wife, Julie, Washington, DC and Joseph N. Adams, Overland Park, KS; four daughters, Vicki L. Adams, Theodore, AL, Barbara M. Markovich, and her husband, Greg, Overland Park, KS, Theresa A. Nickum, and her husband, Bill, Lansing, KS and Carol M. Arsenault, and her husband, Jeff, Chicago, IL; a brother, James Rowe of Riverside, California; four sisters, Patty Massey, Madison, WI and Bernice Enlow, Jean Jensen and Joan Ackerman, all of Manhattan; 15 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

A Rosary and Vigil service will be at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 1, 2007 in the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan. A visitation for family and friends will immediately follow the Rosary service.

Private family graveside services will be Wednesday, May 2, 2007 in the St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery, Ogden with Father Joseph Popelka officiating.

Obituary: Raymond Alonzo Taylor, 73, Manhattan, KS passed away Wednesday, April 18, 2007 in the Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan.

He was born February 12, 1934 at Manhattan, the son of Tom Taylor and Edith Jeeter Taylor. He grew up in Manhattan and attended the local schools. He had been a longtime area resident.

He was married to Anna E. Burnett on October 30, 1989, Manhattan. She survives.

Mr. Taylor was a concrete finisher for Paul Gilman. In later years he was self employed.

He was a veteran in the US Navy and US Army.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son Raymond Taylor, Jr., Oakley, CA and four step-sons, Richard Burnett and Alphonso Burnett both of Manhattan, Frank Burnett, Wamego, and Glenn Burnett, Oakley CA; two daughters, Dalana Taylor and LaShant Taylor both of Oakley CA; two step-daughters, Thomascina Ward, Newport Beach, VA and Francina Darby, Junction City; two sisters, Virginia Nash, Clinton, MO and Patricia Taylor, Manhattan; and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded by his parents; three half brothers; and three brothers, William, Walter “Buddy”, and Jimmie Taylor; and two half sisters, Ruby Jones and Frances Jackson.

Cremation is planned. Graveside inurnment services, with military honors, will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 27, 2007 in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan with the Rev. Dr. James B. Boyer officiating.

The family of Mr. Taylor will receive friends for one hour preceding the service at the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, Manhattan. A procession will be formed at 10:15 to go to the cemetery.
